That's awesome! I've contacted our other players but if I don't hear anything else by Monday or Tuesday we will begin moving forward again with just you four.

So... I'm alive.

Super sorry guys. No excuses here. I mean, life has been crazy but I should have at least checked in. I owed you that much.

I return to you as a happy father and as a man despairing for his country - I won't bore you with the details of either unless you ask, but suffice it to say I have a bit of time on my hands late at night and I need a place to escape my own head. If you will have me back I will resume my role as DM of this game.

They're all about the same, honestly. The update post will likely reach the same length. It's just about the level of detail you guys want between here and Pike.

It looks like we're about ready to break camp, so how fast should we play the journey to Pike? It's a two day journey, but I intend for it to be entirely RP (no combat unless someone calls for it). I can write up the trip to the next shelter and if anyone wants to backpost that's fine, or we can scream ahead all the way to Pike with my next update, or we can go turtle speed and talk about how dry and dusty the trail is.

Are they considered outlaws? (Obviously, but why?)

The feral are considered to be of a degenerate class.. Around a feral, women grab their purses and men grab their swords.

Would a reformed feral be welcome? Or tolerated?

Tolerated, yes. However, a feral who finds himself a member of polite society will likely be constantly called upon to prove his virtue.

Are they believed to be corrupt in some way? Not just bad by circumstances, by somehow inherently evil?

Yes, although if you ask three people what makes a feral bad you'll get three different answers.

What would happen to this guy if we brought him with?
It's possible he could be accepted among the townsfolk. It's possible he could be rejected. It's possible he could be recognized and hanged.

What made some people feral and others townsfolk - in the beginning?

As Matzan said, in the beginning it wasn't much. Circumstance, really. Most of the feral were orphaned by the first rains and separated from their towns by circumstance. They learned to live by whatever means necessary, and those means were often theft and worse. So they became to be known as something other than the norm - feral children, to be avoided. Your character probably doesn't know the whole story here.

Have raids happened in the past?

Food raids, yes. Sometimes. Water raids, yes. Sometimes. The feral have never raided for or stolen personnel before.

Is there anything else we would know about ferals?

Well, aside from the above, the scarring of their face by the acid rain has become ritualistic - no feral old enough to steal has a face untouched by rain.

Their magics are more likely to be aligned with the evils of the world - acid energy spells, acid resistances, and the like.

Their speech is a simplified version of your common language, and their level of education is quite low.

It was clear none of these city-folk knew what it meant to be Feral. The little one, Daxos, suggested joining up with Pike to make one-big-happy-family. "Certainly it must be better than living as a Feral." Rage flared in Matzan's eyes. He scowled at Daxos, his ruined face a mask of pain.

"Do you think we choose to be Feral? That we can just move on in to any old town we like? 'Come on in Matzan, we've got a little house all picked out for you and Ylena.' Peh. Most of us can't even get past the gate. We do just fine on our own.

Daxos resumed, his empty pause having been filled, though perhaps not in the way he expected. "Our task is to save Pike from the difficulties your group has put them in. That must come first and any information you can offer on the priests that were taken will be appreciated. But what was are to do after we bring water to Pike is undetermined. Tell us more about what Kaydn told you. What and where is Archumbra? Who were you to join up with? What is supposed to be in the Northland?"

Matzan glanced to the dirty ground beside the fire. "Archumbra's the big meetup place north of here. Dunno, never heard of the place til Kaydn said it was there. Supposed to join others like us, I think. The Northland. Told you all I know. It's a better place, okay?"

Daxos glanced around at his companions. "I cannot speak for these others, but I will not abandon the cities. We must all stick together. But if there is a sanctuary to the North, both cityborn and Feral could benefit. All could benefit. I would see you able to raise a family in prosperity if I could."

"I agree with Daxos." spoke Damian "We cannot abandon Pike. Have you seen a cleric woman. Name's Mother Tobs. She would've been rather short. Brownish hair that went to her shoulders, in her late 40's?"

Matzan spit into the flame. "If she's a cleric she probably got picked up in a raid. 'Every cleric, every faith' is what Kaydn told us to get. Don't know what she wanted with em, but I got the feeling she wasn't the only one collecting clergy."

When an opening presented itself, Jacob spoke. "I agree we need to investigate. Pike needs its clerics if its going to survive though. I wonder, though, will it be safe to leave them there, if there are Feral roaming around taking them? Perhaps we should see how Father Tolly and the others feel?"

The sentiment generally seemed to resonate with the party, but Tolly and Garrat were already sleeping soundly. The conversation continued into the darkness as the fire waned, most of the words lost into the steady drone of the rain.

---

When the sun rose Damian, who had taken last watch, sat beside a freshly-kindled fire. The rain had washed the battle-torn earth clean away. What remains were there now might have been a hundred years old; the apocalypse had not been kind to vultures.

The two clergymen had already prepared what amounted to breakfast from the rations. Saltpork and hardtack. Not much, but they needed to save their prayers for the creation and purification of water, especially now that the barrels were broken. Despite being such a meager meal, the smell was divine.

"Now Garrat, your short age is getting the better of you. It's better to bring them back with us. There's likely more than enough room in Lake City to house them all"

"It isn't a matter of room, Father. It's a matter of practicality. Our group is less than ten and we shall take two days more to reach Pike, so how do you propose we move an entire town? We need to stay with them and be prepared to fight if we must."

"A city that size could withstand three, maybe four more raids like the one jackass over there helped commit. That's if they manage to keep their clerics alive. Oh and so you're aware, as of two days from now, that means us. No. They need the walls of Pike.

The others were stirring now, either wakened by the argument or the breakfast.

Hey SilentOne, I don't know if this was a character thing or a misunderstanding, but Clary didn't actually die. She came darn close, but didn't cross over.

There's always another place you can go. This tale just reveals another fork in the road and perhaps a clue to the underlying plot.

Subject: The Axe Man's Tale

The night howled all around the old ship. Its timbers creaked and popped, remembering a long-forgotten memory of the sea, but still held fast against the rain as they had for nearly a century. Lightning popped all around. Wind tried to whip acid into every corner, but the center of the pavilion was safe and dry.

There a campfire had been struck, using the scant branches Geoff and Jacob had collected. The smoke mixed with the acid in the air; the smell produced wasn't a pleasant one, but it provided light and warmth for the little party. Close to the fire were several figures who should, by all rights, have died that day. Ylena the sorceress was curled close to the warmth, her head in her husband's lap. It had been but small effort to gain his trust when Garrat and Tolly emerged from their hiding places and revived his wife.

Matzan stroked his wife's hair and told the story that these seven had ended only hours ago.

"We are what you call the Feral. Our grandpas' dads got killed in the first big rain, but the gods thought it was a good idea leave the kids alone. Lots of us tried getting new places in the big cities. Some even did, but most didn't. Us that live now, we live because our dads and grandpas learned to live off the poison rocks. Still we aren't doing so great though. Mostly its scrape together one meal after another, dodge raindrops, do it again. Ylena, well we followed Kaydn because she promised us a better life. All we had to do was steal a few clerics and after the delievery we'd be on our way, all set to raise a family in a place away from all this."

His anger flared and he clenched empty fists. "You all ruined that. Yes, we broke Pike. Other places too. But now none of us are better off. Kaydn is dead, Tristiran and Misah are dead. So's Brindan. Why didn't you kill me and Ylena too? Everything is lost for us now."

The storm punctuated his speech. There was a pause, and suddenly he sat straight up. "You could come with us! You've got priests and kits. Kaydn said it was only a day or two from here to Archumbra. From there we're supposed to join up with some others and make for the Northlands. Kaydn says they still have stars up there. We could all live like kings and get fat, what do you say?"

Apologies. I'm alive and will crank out an update ASAP. I've got a lot going on lately. If you haven't heard I've got a baby on the way, so I've been putting a lot of effort into my house lately. A bit of that, a bit of general malaise, and a bit too much X-Wing minis have had me busy.

Update by tomorrow night.

Let's talk about combat.

I would like to talk to you all about some ways to spice things up or just make it more engaging. Silent and I talked about a few options. Here are those and a few more:

** We could have fewer combat encounters in general - that's something that you all can help manage. I will definitely be throwing more bad people your way, but they don't all have to end in violence.

** I could make combat deadlier. Say, everything has half HP.

** The encounters you run into could be small groups or single-creature fights. This doesn't play well IRL, but would probably do better in PBP.

** We could do combat in chat. Now I really like this idea, but I realize it's difficult to get everyone onto a single schedule to be in one place at the same time. If we only do one chat combat every 3 months that would be fine too.

** I am open to ideas here.

The wind howled and stirred up the fine mist that would soon become deadly. Lightning crashed again, and was followed in an instant by a peal of thunder. The storm was close, and it was angry. The night Jacob had spent in the weather was a lucky one. A big storm could kill a man and leave only a mystery.

Seeing this, Athelia stepped into the protection of the pavilion and toward the nearby swordsman. Her scimitar found a home in the back of his neck, felling him in an instant. Blood ran down her blade in a river. It was a good stroke.

Geoff turned from the downed enemies and joined the fray against Clary's assailant. The woman was completely mobbed, and didn't stand a chance against so many attackers. Geoff's sword drew blood. With a quick step, Jacob was beside him, and fired an arrow straight into the woman's throat. She crumpled like a ragdoll.

This left only the axe-man, barely visible in the cloud of spiders that surrounded him. Damian, seeing his first target eliminated, chose to let the spiders do their work, and closed his hand on the ball of flame, saving the deadly spell for another time. His eagle would do the fighting for him this turn. Etuis moved toward the tortured man, raking with his claws. In the dim light and the fray of battle, it was difficult to tell if the man had been damaged. The spiders continued their work on the man, and he seemed unwilling to fight them or anyone else.

Combat was cooling. Beside the fallen fighter, Silinrul licked Clary's wounds. Clary let a final arrow fly, and the woman who had nearly killed her was dead, joining her companions in the afterworld. The axe-wielding man still stood beside his lover, just outside the pavilion. He knelt, the covering of spiders covering his expression. It seemed he was weeping.

The man turned his face toward Damian. It could have been anyone, but Damian was closest. His voice was barely audible over the oncoming storm. "Just kill me."

[[OK That is it for combat. This guy is barely alive and unwilling to continue the fight. Do what you will with him. You do not get a map update because it's no longer necessary!]]
