Could stay at the house, make the rider come to us. Provides good cover and plenty of hidey holes, plus we don't have to worry about them coming up behind us, because our back is to the wall.

Do you have anything in mind as far as subterfuge? Tristan could go undercover as Isiah, maybe Sehanine could pose as the farmer's wife. I don't know what this could accomplish but it is in line with the theme of deceit.

It seems diplomancy shall be our preferred school of magic. Relos is best at that, so he's front row center it seems. Calopee is hiding off in the bushes. What of Tristan, Sehanine, and Mal?

----

>>> Well, I'm fairly certain Relos has the highest diplomacy if we want to talk. I can serve as the front line and the one who speaks to them about whatever the group agrees on. Btw no work today so i'll post tonight. I'm tempted not to since harassment from grugg is really fun

----

That's fair, I wasn't really looking at the skills though I should have been.

Mal isn't going to want to hide, at least not this time, although it is something I've put some skill points in.

So we're looking at Relos diplomacising with the enemy. A show of force could work - maybe we can intimidate them.

Here's a couple scenarios based on this discussion.
Theoretical encounter 1: Diplomacy, Intimidate and Prepate for Battle

~~~~~~~~~|..|~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~C~|E|~M~~~~~~

Theoretical Encounter 3: Ambush with Isiah as bait.

~~~~~~ST~|i|~R~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~|..|~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~|..|~~~~~~~~
E = Enemy
Other Letters = Characters by initial
Edit: I missed Nimu's post, so what are some other ways to win here?
* We could try bribery, if the riders are looking for money we most likely already have more than poor Isiah.
* We could set up a tripline as part of the ambush - Mal and Cal could pull the rope taut to trip a horse and even the odds.
* We could set the field ablaze and tell the rider Isiah would rather burn his crops than let them fall into the hands of a stranger, then tell Isiah the rider burned the crops out of malice.
* We could determine that good is pretty subjective after all and join up with the riders.
* We could buy the rights to the farm ourselves, protect it once and live out our days as goat herders.
Sehanine and Tristan need to do the talking if we decide to parley. Technically Tristan has higher CHA but Sehanine has a that whole magic fey thing going on. Relos has a similarly high charisma but the chance that his paladinity will get in the way is rather high.
I say Mal and the Paladin should flank Sehanine and Tristan, maybe walking four abreast. Calopee should hide in the field if she can, and ready her skiprocks for a ranged sneak attack. Sehanine's HP makes her little more than a flower waiting to be trampled under these guy's bootheel, so we should be prepared to defend her if things go south.
Not bad.
If Isiah isn't all he seems, as Sehanine seems to think, sending them on their way would be very telling.
Chess and I are of a mind that the invaders will burn the fields. We seem to have little chance of putting out the fire... should we evacuate the family?
The evening sun glowed over the dirty farmscape, transforming the hot mud into glistening gold. The old farmhouse looked picturesque, like a painting of pastoral bliss. Fields of grain swayed beyond it in the the fine summer breeze.
Mal walked toward the scene in contemplation, the dirt road soft beneath his feet. Up ahead he saw two figures walking side by side. Tristan and the elf. Sehanine. He had trouble with her name, and given today's episode he thought it wise to keep it close to mind. The two of them looked thick as thieves; he could hear them talking but couldn't quite grasp the words.
He quickened his pace, no thought given to stealth, and was on upon them. "You two look like you're up to something," he said. "Did you learn anything useful today?"
The group of three talked and walked for a while. Mal found the golden evening intoxicating, and his thoughts wandered all around the day's events before finding their way home.
"Oh, I learned something that may be of use", he said. "Though it isn't much. I met some hoary old man who thought he'd heard of these desert riders before. Seems they raided some of the townsfolk awhile back, but he thought it was kind of strange they would try to take the farm. Something he said stuck out to me in particular - they're followers of Sartyria, the fire goddess."
The door to Isiah's hut was suddenly in front of them, the long walk made short once again with conversation. The door swung open to the sight of Calopee, Relos, and the farmer. The six of them reunited, Isiah began serving up the dinner.
Down home cooking is, without question, one of the finer experiences on the material plane. Isiah's stew was no exception. Simple though it was, even Mal could find nothing bad to say about it. This shouldn't have surpised the party, as it's hard to complain with a mouthful of bread.
“What haf’ you decided, then?" the farmer asked. "And what can we do to help" He looked to his boys with what Malachi knew was some combination of love and fear. If this mission failed, those kids were in for a tough life, or perhaps just a very short one.
Mal swallowed his oversize bite with some effort, and gave what he perceived to be a dashing grin. "Do you have any beer?"
Well it looks like we're going to be helping a out farmer. I just realized Calopee and Malachi stormed off without informing Isiah what their plans were, and without deciding when and where to meet back up. Maybe someone could work on that?
Yeah we're off to a roaring start.
Edited - I missed the part where Tristan said an hour or two before nightfall. Works for me.
I'm assuming you're talking about Mal and calling him Masked Moron. We're good. I mean, we're totally good. Mal is a dick and full of himself to boot. Hate him, have Tristan hate him; it's flattering to me as long as we're clear - Mal is not my avatar, but merely a character I created. I want him to clash, to go against the grain and tick your characters off.
But that's just because it's great storytelling, and fun RP.
PS - Mal's argument with Calopee was arranged in chat this evening. It was a blast to write together and a great example of exactly what you're talking about - separating self from character.
Subject: Drawing the Wool
Calopee went for it, with everything to lose; it was showtime. The smallest chuckle passed her lips, and she allowed it to ripple into a full blown festival of laughter. Even a few tears managed to worm their way out from under her eyes. After wiping dry her cheeks, and whooping to a stop, she looked up at her 'comrade' Malachi and said, "Silly Mal. Just because you decided to use the name of a dead knight to spread your fame, doesn't mean we all had to stoop to that low. I'm perfectly fine EARNING my pledge as a hero."
Mal's eyes went wide. Calopee's words flashed against his diamond mind, and he drew his wit like a rapier, mixing fact with fiction to create a more perfect lie. "Earning your pledge? I earned mine on Arrowhead Island, when I took on the name of the Argent Blade. It's a title, you know. It was given to me. That knight was the only father I knew!"
"That isn't earning a thing. Just because Daddy dearest thought you needed a little help getting ahead in life doesn't make you anything special!" The halfling practially spat at him. Mal could feel anger, real anger, radiating from her in waves.
Mal stood up quickly, nearly knocking over his chair. He drew his actual rapier now, though he didn't point it at her. He was prepared for a riposte, and he felt his intellect glint on the weapon. "Oh I earned it alright. With the point of this blade! Do you know what my final trial was?" He laid his sword on the table. His mind reeled as he paused, using the moment to finish the balestra.
"Do you have any idea what it took?" His voice was lower now, barely above a whisper. He put both hands on the table and leaned in to match his gaze with Calopee's. "The moniker only passes when a student defeats the master in lethal combat. Why do you think I never call him by name? 'That dead knight?' I had to learn to hate him, just to live with myself."
Calopee parried his words with ease. She leaned inward and drew herself up to her full height, her eyes barely on a level with Malachi's. Her lip curled as she spoke. "Well... I never knew. If I'd known you'd earned your name by killing an old man, I'd have given you way more respect!"
The words hurt, even though he knew they were both lying. He knew the farce had done as much good as it could, gone as far to covering up his mistake as they could make it. He threw his hand to the hilt of his weapon, still upon the table. "Be silent and stand with us tonight, or speak again and taste my blade."
His words constituted a concession. Calopee seemed to sense this and made her final riposte. "You toss around all the threats you want big man! I'll be here tonight. You just watch out for falling stones!"
She stormed off toward the door to begin her scouting. Just before leaving, she stopped and turned toward the table. Her eyes met Mal's one final time with a glare and all the cold hatred she could muster. After another tense moment, she huffed and spoke to the group. "If we are to use this place as a site for... 'negotiations', it's probably best that I scope out the field and find any defensive points of value, and map out where we might be most vulnerable. Especially if this horseman brings along a few mounted friends... We shall want options."
Then Calopee walked out without another word or glance backward. After a moment of silence, Mal looked away from the spot she had been standing. He looked at his companions. He looked at Relos. He looked ashamed.
"I guess you all had to find that out eventually. It's the truth. I killed my mentor. In his dying breath, he bestowed on me the title which I now bear. It is... a burden." He sighed deeply. "Look, I've got work to do too. I'm going into town. Anybody need anything?"
When he reached the door Calopee was still in sight, though a reasonable distance away. The muddy farm road led back to Schell, and it seemed they were both headed that direction. Mal followed her for some time while closing the distance between them, before deciding they were out of earshot. He whistled like a hawk, a signal. She turned, now close enough that he could see her face. She wore a smirk. Puckish one.
Mal put his hand on his forehead palm first and pantomimed wiping the sweat off. His hand came away wet. He sighed again, not a message to the rogue but for his own sake. After this gesture of good faith, Calopee continued into the fields to find her strategic avenues and pitfalls. Mal walked slowly on the road to Schell, contemplating this new twist. She would make a fine sparring partner.
