”So…just gonna sit there…or do you want a drink?”

Mal wasn't sure whether Argos was being facetious or not, but in either case the old keep was demonstrably thick as dragon's hide. He'd asked the same question of him a scant few days ago, and surprised him then with an answer in the affirmative. This place was a tavern, wasn't it?

Tristan replied before Mal could form an appropriate insult. "We've much to discuss, and personally, I'd rather not do it on an empty stomach." Sehanine agreed. ""Yes, let us eat. While we do, you can regale us with tales of all your travels yesterday."

Three days ago Malachi had sneered at the bartender. Whether the recent battle had dulled his wit or sharpened his hunger he wasn't sure, but it made no difference. The Argent Blade found no suitable words, other than "Yeah, a beer would do, Argie. Some breakfast as well." He frowned a little, worried that the bartender might think he had begun to like him.

Argos beamed at him dully for a moment, and Mal thought he caught the gleam of gold in his eye. Did he expect some sort of tip? He'd already been paid twice what he was worth. The lout. The Argent Blade turned his gaze back to his companions. Tristan grinned at him. Sehanine was smiling as well, but hers seemed more introspective. Everyone was all teeth and no bite this morning. Mal chalked it up to the gold in their pockets. Maybe that was what held his tongue today as well.

The incentive program sounds cool and all, but now when I post it will seem like I'm doing it for the rewards, and not the game.... and the game is why I'm here. Curses.

I agree Chessic, but it apparently hasn't been enough to keep up posting regularly since like... early July. Bring on the bonus!

So I'm thinking a round of breakfast, a round of beer, and a round of discussion then off to chase down the jerk who tried to take the farm? Maybe?

Malachi paced out an area for his pupils and found a spot near its center where he could meditate. The thought of helping the little town in a lasting way filled him with joy; it felt good to do good. In the dusty midday sun, Malachi traced the actions of the maneuvers he would teach them. The basic work of the swordsman would aid them well, but to these he could add a little of the old blade magic. These he chose carefully. None of them channeled darkness as he had learned. Even though he himself used it as both shield and sword, Mal would not teach it to another. Such magic could catapult a young mind into a life of dishonor, if not outright villainy.

He thought for a moment how he must look, practicing the art in the middle of the dirty field. He smirked and continued his slow pantomime. How to blind an enemy with an attack. How to find holes in an opponent's guard by carefully watching his moves. How to resist an attack against the will. How to counter a charge. If each young man learned but one of these, the town was to be well protected.

[[Blistering Flourish. Moment of Perfect Mind. Sapphire Nightmare Blade. Counter Charge.]]

Subject: I'm back, with apologies.

So I'm here once again, checking in after checking out with no notice. I feel I should apologize for that, so to Tann and the members of Trilogy, sorry. It looks like I didn't miss much with Fortunes Favored, but to Grugg and the rest, sorry for not being present. Truth is, I got pretty burnt out after the July 4th diedown. Felt as if I couldn't get started again and it looked like every story line was dead, which can be pretty disheartening. I'm returning here because of the people, and I intend to stay. My level of participation is going to be lower. Two stories at most.

Tann, if you will have me back I'll be happy to play. As for The Favored, I'm pretty sure I've got some peasants to train.

Willow bark was bitter and it stuck in your teeth for hours, but gods it was just the cure for a headache. Mal had been fortunate that the old farmer kept a stock of the panacea in his cabinet, and he now chewed a cheekful of it. The daylight became less daunting as the pain in his neck and head quickly dissipated. Scraps of conversation drifted through the open door, and Mal no longer found the voices made his head turn inside out. Sehanine was bargaining for a place in their prisoner's trial, saying she was counted wise among her people. He scoffed at her lie, knowing he couldn't be seen or heard. A little of the bark flew out as he laughed and willow-drool ran down his smiling face.

Rejuvenated, Malachi wiped his mouth and headed once again for the door. He reduced his cud to a less noticeable amount by spitting into the sink as he passed. The two groups now seemed more at ease, the villagers having found nobody to fight. As The Argent Blade rejoined Tristan and Relos, a pair of ill-dressed folk armed with little more than household tools ran up to them.

”Beggin’ yer pardons, sirs, but were ya plannin’ on just… leavin’ those there? There’s not much we haf’, in terms of arm’ments ya’see, sn’ the guard don’t haf’ much themselves. Could really help us, ya’know, hold our own?”

Malachi looked to the weapons, and then to his companions. These boys were clearly more in need than any of the Favored, and something told him he wouldn't be in Schell for the rest of his life. This sleepy little place needed brave men. He spoke for the group, perhaps jumping in before the others could speak but also not really caring.

"I see no reason why not. In fact, I can do better than that. A place like this needs a hero sometimes but a protector always." The bark in his mouth kept the words from sounding as heroic as he had hoped, but he continued undaunted. "Bring yourselves and six others back here when the others have left, and I will give you a lesson on how to safeguard your city. Oh, and take the armor with you, I expect you to have it on when you return."

Of course there's evil and then there's evil. One evil character is a jerk, five evil characters are a blight upon the world. I think if they're all evil they could work toward a common, not-nice goal.

Subject: Make an Evil Core Class!

This is based on a conversation Axiomatic and I had in chat a couple nights ago. If we get a full range of 3.5 core classes "Evilized" I might put together a custom evil campaign.

Death's Druid

Level Progression Same as Table 3–8: The Druid except the "Special" column. Spells are drawn from a revised spells list (below)

Special:
Replace Animal Companion with Undead Companion. This companion may be any qualifying animal from the original list, but with the "Undead" template added, or any monster with the Undead type and a CR of 1 or less.

[This CR requirement goes up to 2 or less at level 4; 4 or less at level 7; 6 or less at level 10; 8 or less at level 13; 10 or less at level 16. ]

Nature Sense is removed from the list.
Replace Wild Empathy with Necrotic Empathy - Functions as Wild Empathy, but only for undead characters or creatures.

Deathless Stride - Starting at second level, undead will not attack a Death's Druid unless provoked.

Trackless Step remains unchanged.
Replace Resist Nature's Lure with Assault Natural Order Starting at 4th level, a Death's Druid gains a +4 bonus on attack and damage rolls against Fey creatures.

Replace Wild Shape with Necroshape - At 5th level, a Death's Druid gains the ability to turn herself into any Medium or Small Undead-Type creature or Animal with the Undead Template and a CR equal to her level and back again once per day. Effect lasts for 1 hour per Druid level. Changing form is a standard action and doesn't provoke and Attack of Opportunity. Necroshape progression follows the Wild Shape Progression as on Table 3-8.

Venom Immunity remains unchanged
A Thousand Faces remains unchanged
Timeless Body becomes Lichform - Any time attaining 15th level, a Death's Druid may choose to permenantly become a Lich. To do so requires the Druid create a Phylactery and undergo a profane ritual. Becoming a lich causes temporary loss of the Necroshape ability. At level 16, a Death's Druid Lich will gain the Elemental Necroshape Ability as usual, and at at Level 18 the Death's Druid Lich will regain Necroshape (Necroshape 1/dy, Elemental 2/day) (At level 20, Necroshape 3/day, Elemental 3/day, Huge Elemental)

This new form prevents any ability score penalties for aging, though any penalties already incurred remain.

[Spells coming later]

Subject: Henh.

"Perhaps our torchbearer would be so kind as to accompany you?"

The rat turned from his vista over the now-gaping hole and looked at his accuser. The old one was leering at at him with what looked like a smirk across his wrinkled face. Looking him in the eye, the monstrous thing spat into the hole and watched the yellow phlegm fall until it disappeared into the inky darkness. "Feh. Age before beauty, you gnarled old oak. Or maybe you can't uproot yourself from that spot?

A shrug was the only response from the naked, bearded man. He seemed oddly at peace with the idea of being the next to descend, and began to move toward the hemp ladder. The mongrel thrust the torch toward him. "You think you can see in the dark, ancient one?"

Rheumy blue eyes met the mismatched but sharp eyes of the rat, and the old man seemed to brighten for a moment. "Henh. I can." He snapped his arm back and cast the useless torch into the abyss. It fell for far too long, and the tink it made at the bottom was fainter than he had anticipated.

A word rang in the mongrel-rat's mind like an echo in a cavern. Cast... one who casts... caster... He stood in silence for a moment as the echoes found a home. It was a thought, a half-formed memory without face or identity, but once it took root there could be no doubt. Almost inaudibly, he whispered his revelation into the darkness.

"My name is Castor."

The darkness hung thick about them now, the only source of light having been flung to the floor far below. Castor found he was perfectly at home now.

Well I'm not really in a position to discuss these things IC as Mal has a bandit-induced migraine, but I have some thoughts.

An Early Harvest - LET US COLLECT!

For Want of a Nail - Do you guys need this stuff? I think we could use the goodwill.
The Town's Justice - Get him tried! And off our hands. I very much doubt he'd make much of a bargaining chip with Jaron.
...Of Jaron - ...OR we could keep him around and grease his palm so he leads us to the real badguy.

F&#KING C**TS I’LL GUT YER F&#KING S#!TSACKS!

The words were like getting kicked in the head. Malachi sat up so fast he pulled a muscle in his neck. He squinched his eyes and worked his jaw, but it was too late. The headache had already set in. Now standing up and working three fingers on his left temple, Mal gave his bound roommate a glare that would have sent a smarter, less-constrained man running. This idiot was content to suggest Mal should do something physiologically improbable with his sword. Flying cats, it wasn't even dawn yet! Mal kicked him with disdain before leaving the room, managing to draw a stream of oddly well-thought-out curses. He wondered if the man spent a significant portion of his free time inventing these things.

The others were rising now as well. Sehanine, Tristan, Relos, Calopee. All present and accounted for, and none of them with anything like permenant damage. They were all a little worse for the wear perhaps, but even Tristan seemed lively enough for having had a brush with death. On his way out the door, Mal felt the soft touch of Sehanine's magic straighten out the wrinkles in his pants and erase the bloodstains from his shirt. Even his mask got a little polish.

It was a little after dawn when Mal stepped out into the world once again. Whiffs of smoke drifted lazily through the air, catching the golden sunrise and turning it silver. Birds darted to and fro singing songs a thousand years old. Malachi threw up an arm and grimaced in the horrible dawn. A throng of locals had arrived to survey the wreckage each one armed to the tooth with what appeared to be hastily chosen implements from various professions, but Mal hardly had a chance to see that Isiah was the leader of this gang. He shut his eyes tight again and turned back to the farmhouse, massaging his head as he walked. He brushed by someone going the other way, probably Sehanine judging by the feel of her clothes. Perhaps today was not the day to play diplomat. Perhaps today was to be a day of rest and healing.

Heroes deserve that sort of thing, right?
