Topic: The Lost Mine of Phandelver Q&A
Subject: So...

My head just has been less and less into this game the past few weeks. I'm not sure I want to continue. It's just harder to get myself into the mindset I need to be in for it. Once I'm there, I'm fine, but I feel like every time I have to find my notes and character sheets and refer and read, and part of that is my own fault for making it like a pen and paper style, but there it is. And the last thing I want is people to feel like I'm wasting their time here or anything. So as much as I like the game and what you guys did with the characters I'm thinking I should just call it.

Subject: Hi Dane

Sorry, the Buggy's AC is 16, so you actually missed this one. By the way, his current HP is five, so you're close to killing him. Aspara also misses this round, and the buggy hits her for 11 damage! She's still standing but she didn't like that at all.

If you want me to post, I can, otherwise you can redo your post incoporate all that and then roll again.

Dane's strike doesn't pentrate the bugbear's armor. He retailiates with a big swing, but misses.

Aspara attempts a quick strike and also misses.

As Dane lands his blow, Aspara slashes with one short short, which only seems to glance off the armor. Stabbing with the other, she inflicts a wound that bites flesh. The bugbear growls and heaves it's might club at her, but she twirls deftly out of the way, baring her teeth in anger. "You'll be the one to die today, monster!"

(six damage total that round from both of ya)

Subject: Well

It was the first nat 20 I've gotten and I just did what my real life DM does when that happens: Automatic max damage.

Another reason I did that is...I didn't want Pavel to get one hit killed. I think the PHB recommendation is that you roll all the attack die twice plus the modifier, which would have been 4d8+2 in this case; which could have been really bad if the damage was high enough. (I'm giving you all some cushion in your vulnerable situation, and I'm also still getting a feel for how difficult certain encounters are and I don't want to overwhelm you).

So I guess for now, what "critical hit" means may vary as I get adjusted to the rules, but for now, since you're undermanned, it's probably going to bend towards giving the party a push forward to make up for the lack of players.

Also, DG...I may have you join early and manufacture some reason as to why you'd be randomly walking around the dungeon. This battle could be tough if the Bugbear rolls good and our heroes roll badly. He is definitely wounded but he hits really hard.

I took a closer look at your character sheet and I have a couple of questions:

I'd like you to start at first level, though I'm ok with you starting with the same amount of exp as everyone else. That in mind, you may want to reselect your spells.

Also, I noticed your sheet says "phoenix sorcerer" What does the phoenix part mean? I don't see it mentioned in the handbook. I'm guessing it's an alternative sorcerer background? If so, is the "All Eyes on You" and "Mantle of Fire" thing associated with that?

I also don't see the "Far traveler" background in my handbook.

I'm ok with using content from other books, but I'd appreciate I link or something so I can refer to it.

New post up. Ya'll in a pickle.

It's like that part in a horror movie where the psychopath is damn near eviscerated but is still coming at you just as strong as before if not stronger.

Subject: Two on One

The second goblin falls to the combined arrows of Aspara and Dane.

Bugbear blood tricks down the beast's armor as he bleeds from the savage blows dealt to him by the mighty Pavel. However, after the initial cries of pain, the bugbear no longer seems to feel the blows. He just looks angry now, though his wounds look gruesome.

"No one defys Klarg!" the beast bellows. "DIE!" He swings his large club at Pavel with all his might...and connects!

[He rolled a natural 20....gonna say that means he automatically deals max damage, which is 18 in this case.
I believe that means Pavel is down for now.]

Pavel brings up his shield in an attempt to block the savage blow, but the large club pounds through it and Pavel receives the full force of the blow anyway, knocking him to the ground savagely. The bugbear, who either answers to one named Klarg, or is referring to himself in the third person, then turns to the other combatants. "Klarg will make bowls of your skulls! He will crush you! Tear you limb...from....LIMB!"

"ARRRRRGGGGHHH!" The bugbear screams as the crossbow bolt enters it's shoulder. The goblins perk up and the battle is joined.

Dane's arrow hits it's goblin, but it shifts at the last moment causing the arrow to thud against a hide shield that was strapped to it's back.

Aspara's shot at the other goblin shoots true and it pierces it's neck, causing it to fall to the ground, choking on blood.

The remaining goblin and bugbear are up and ready in a flash.

"Intruders!" The bugbear screams. "Scum! Die!"

(Order doesn't really matter in this case, but if needed Pavel, Dane, then Aspara. That was a free attack round, plus you get to attack first)

I'm gonna say that's a miss....goblin's armor class is 15 with a shield, 14 without. I don't think they would get penalty on that for being surprised. If you're aware of something different, let me know.

Bugbear's AC is 16, fyi. He's a well appointed bugbear, wearing chainmail, and it's a heavy club, not a light one, that looks like it can do serious damage.

Hey dungeon goat, in response to your pm, being a sorcerer is great, we need a magicky person in the mix, I think. However, I'd prefer if you were a human, dwarf (mountain or hill), or elf (high or wood) or halfling (stout or lightfoot). Each comes with it's own special ability score bonuses which I can explain if need be. Other than that, I glanced at that character sheet and it looks fine.

Subject: Garroting

Badass idea. I think Nomad is right though, garroting is basically grappling until you strangle the guy, and has a chance of not succeeding if he's a tough one. Also I'm not sure if you have something that's good for garroting. I imagine just regular hemp rope isn't the best for that? It being kind of thick and all, and no special handles. Not saying it's impossible by any means.

I guess one person could garrote while the other two fight the goblins?

they're not immediately facing you. They're facing eachother, but no one has their back directly to you, and if you stand out to long, you'd probably get noticed eventually.
If you're going to try to sneak up on them, it'd be a stealth check. Though they are surprised if you attack immediately

Basically they're just huddled around a large fire off away from all the stolen loot they're stock piling here.

Any specific questions?

"We'd better go one at a time," she reasons, "Otherwise if the person ahead slips, they'll fall on the others."

With some straining an effort, she climbs up the dark cavern, being as quiet as possible except for periodic grunts as her hands and boots negotiate the steep chimney.

The rest of you follow, and as the second ascends to the top, you see flashes of light, so that you can barely see Aspara's face who is putting a finger to her lips, indicating that you should be silent.

As you all arrive to the top, you are lucky to find several large crates obstructing your view of a bonfire that's obviously in the center of the room, and voices speaking Goblin coming from there.

Aspara holds up three fingers and makes a circular gesture, indicating that there are three other people in that direction that she is aware of. It's clear that they aren't aware of your presence, or if they are, they don't acknowledge you.

If you poke your head out from behind cover, which consists of boxes of what looks like stolen supplies, you see A large bugbear holding a club and two goblins sitting at a fire. the bugbear has a large chair that he's sitting in, and he's growling and yammering in goblin at the two goblins.

For not checking in in a while.

I don't want to push ya'll in one direction or the other...Do you want the dark elf to take point, or would you rather a PC do that? I am just laying out options here, adding some color here and there for narrative pleasure. The choice is yours.

The light situation is kind of awkward, but if makes you feel any better its' specifically written in the scenario that way.

I've always found it kind of annoying and awkward in games I've played as well that goblinoids and orcs have such good night vision, it just makes the idea of sneaking around in the dark places they live pretty difficult, which obviously puts you at a disadvantage, but there you have it.

So, Pavel deducts 3 arrows and our elf ranger will deduct two arrows. I decided to roll for you for expediency but if you want to reroll for yourself you can.

You all need to make a DC 10 strength check if you are going to try and climb the fissure garbage chute thingie.

Pavel needs to roll for the arrows and assuming you're gonna try to go up the crevice, you'll all have to make a strength check :o
