As the story goes, from what I see, Cor and Ulthok are original characters. Both have had close calls but have come back. Cor went evil and Ulthok was killed. Now cor has been saved and Ulthok healed. So as long as we have a Cleric or such that can raise the dead you always have a chance.

The changing of character seems to have more to do with the writers and not the characters. Players lose interest or are not able to continue so their character is replaced. In my case I was lucky to take over Ulthok and keep him around.

I like this story and game, I'm hoping to be in it a long time. I've only scratched the surface of what Ulthok can do and who he is.

So don't give up before we've started, there is still a major war to win.

I agree with what Ody said, but it is true to say that Tann likes to throw a lot of nasty things at his players (judging from what has happened in the past and what has occurred since). That makes it doubly important to use all the resources of your character, and avoid doing what your character isn't good at.

Apologies for taking some slight liberties Raven. I was bouncing off the fact that you wrote that Ayreon was clearly from a noble elven family to anyone familiar to them. Because Sirene is also from E’Loth Lo’rian, I decided to put 2+2 together.

No apologies needed, quite on the contrary. I love a little character interaction in a game and that's what the backgrounds (however short) are for.

Normally it requires 8 hours of rest to relearn/memorize spells but in this case I'll allow it as long as you only replace the spells used and not your whole spell list.
