You can
You can cast any spell you want out of your available inventory. However the spell may or may not work. Example you cast your hold animal spell at what you think is an animal but turns out to be something else. In that case the hold spell will not work.

We never fully know what our spell effects will be until we cast them. The characters may believe it will work ina certain manner based on their assesment of the situation. But, they can be wrong.

Rolls..........
You have to remember that Tann rolls for your spell. You could get a 20 for a critical hit or down to a 1 for a critical fail. A great spell on a critical fail is about the same a no spell at all or worse, it could backlash. also a critical hit of 20 on poor spell could have great results.
We just play and hope for the best.
In a table top game my Gnome cleric once came through a secret door into a dinning area to find bunch of Goblins at a table eating. He had intuitive on the encounter and "surprise" by coming through a secret door. He attacked by using his his throwing hammer at the nearest Goblin as he had "surprise" on them. Well that attack rolled a critical fail 1. The DM said the hammer flew out of his hand backwards hitting the wall and knocking down a candle and all the Goblin looked up at him. But because of "Surprise" he still had intuitive and got a second attack (luckily for him). So I had him cast Entangle on the goblins sitting around the table so the chair lashing would bind them to the chairs. Well an entangle spell in an outdoor spell to be used on living plants. I was new to gaming and really had not thought of that so the likelihood of the spell working was very poor. But I rolled a 20 critical hit. The DM said the chairs had been recently been repaired so the binding were still a bit green and they reacted to the spell binding the creatures to the chairs. My Gnome then proceeded to wipe them out.
So you never know, I rolled a crit fail and then a crit hit in successive roll......what great game....

Rats
Dragon Soul
Uhm, don't attack? The rats already overpowered a guard. My understanding is that the guard is probably dead below us. Tann - is this right? You really want us to hold off until hundreds of rats are on top of us and it is too late to deal with them?

We don't know what happened exactly. For all we know, the rats may have only killed the guard in self defence. We can't just assume they're evil and vicious.

But if Tann-or anyone-wants me to edit my post, I will. Can we just see if Arandur can get through to them first and find out what they want? We could potentially discover clues to a larger plot.

Pretty sure the rats did not kill guards in sefl defense. Cor will not wait around to be swarmed. If someone wants to try to communicate with the large rats they are free to try. However the dead guards pretty much rule out "we come in peace" for the rats.

To be honest. If Rayden hadnt seen the 3 bigger ones she would have began attacking the smaller ones too. Rats are gross. Do you know how many deseases they carry? Lol

Alright.
And I think rats are cute. I love their little twitchy noses, beady black eyes and little paws. And their cute whiskers. If my mum wasn't so afraid of them (yes, for some strange reason, she's actually legitimately afraid of rats), then I'd want one as a pet.

Ulthok tonight......
I should get a post up tonight. My son and his girl friend moved back this week so I didn't pay much attention to posting.

Not a fan of hundreds of rats
I'm thinking Lothor still shoots at the big rats. Call him 'ratist' if you will, but he is in fight first and ask questions second mode. If you get an answer we can stop.
