I personally started out with freeform games, and found the transition to rules based very smooth. Perhaps it's best to try your luck there first.

I've been looking around dndinsider and at the 4th ed rules, and I think it's cheap what they're doing charging for the books AND the insider. But whatev, it can always lead to some good homebrew rules
