The Mage - part of a poem

Just something random that's been tickling my mind to get out. Basically, it's about a man who ran away from home, everything he knew, and found a powerful wizard. The wizard taught him to control the elements, and the ways of necromancy, but the power was too much, too soon. Accidentally, he destroys himself with a spell gone wrong, and warns others not to do the same.

The Mage

Once I was a man
Long ago, before your time
Far from home I ran

I sought solace there
there among the green oak trees
and there I found truth.

Power was my aim
truth was found, and he then my
master then became

he taught me of air
and fire, water and of wind
it came from nowhere

such power to hold,
to command, to understand
power over death

except my own then
as I could not control it
the power within

it tore me apart
destroying even my soul
my mind, and my heart

all that's left of me
is this, a final warning,
a hope that you'll see

power's not the end
nor the means, nor all that is
it's a tool in hand

so then hear my words
listen to the words I speak
and drop now your swords

for all the power in the world
will never save your soul.
