I can't believe nobody commented anything on this website about the movie 'District 9' yet!!

I just finished watching it, and I can't remember the last time I saw something so incredibly original.

The story: Aliens have landed on earth, and are put behind fences, where they will live in slums called 'District 9'. They are outcasts, unwanted, violated and discriminated against, especially by the weapons industry, who see a profit in the alien technology. (In this movie it is shown clearly how wicked and cruel we humans can be towards others who are unlike us.)
This tale revolves around a man who is in charge of relocating the aliens to a new 'improved' district, which is nothing more than a modern concentration camp. Through a series of events he becomes an outcast himself and undergoes the same horrors as the aliens.

It would be a shame to tell you more.

This movie starts as a documentary but turns into a mix of sci-fi and action towards the end. It's filmed in a rough manner, not completely hand-held camera work, not entirely hollywood style either.
Be warned though, for there are plenty of blood, gore and shocking images in this movie. It is a science fiction film with horror elements, but nothing like Event Horizon or the Cell. It is a truly original, instant classic, if you ask me.

Go see it. Now!

I plan to pirate, download, steal, obtain a copy sometime to watch.

It was interesting and original. A must see. I will say not more.

It was good, but not the 49th best movie ever.

I didn't like the antagonism between Wikus and Koobus at the end of the movie; it made it seem more like a Wild West duel than a story about the larger theme of humans making contact with aliens. This along with the fact that Wikus was actually walking around in something reminiscent of an anime mecha made the last half hour of the movie weaker than it should have been.

Then again, can anyone really dislike an ending that includes the cutest alien kid in the history of cinema?

For a grim, dystopian portrayal of our future society, however, I prefer Children of Men. Incidentally, that movie uses many of the same cinematographic techniques as District 9—and it has Clive Owen (who in himself is a cinematographic technique).

I saw the film and frankly I was disappointed. The film has no real direction or anything new to offer. the special effects were nomimal, the message "people are bad, corporation are bad, mercenary armies are bad," has been done before and done better.

I left the movie feeling nothing but disappointment. No other emotional engagement. I didn't feel good, I didn't feel bad, I wasn't enraged, I wasn't happy. It was just blah.

You must've seen a different movie.

No, I understand that opinions can differ. I loved it, and I would like to see it again sometime soon. I did think it offered a new whole. Yeah, everything has been done before, but that's basically with every movie that comes out. It's the combination of elements and how it is formed that totally intrigued me.
And you can say that they didn't keep a straight line by starting as a documentary and ending in regular story telling, but I myself liked how the two blended.

But I guess that's the thing. You never know how you're going to react to a movie. I recently recommended Monsters vs Aliens to somebody, and they didn't like it at all. But I was just in the right mood for that particular kind of movie. Moods matter.
