They had to say the elven word for "friend" which is "Mellon".

If your question comes from the films, I'll say Gollum meant for Shelob the spider to consume Frodo, who had ventured into her caves at Gollum's urging. Gollum would then later pilfer the Precious from Frodo's gear afterwards.
