Subject: If I water the shadow, will it grow?

Siraya was already clearly confused by what she had just seen. She had no idea how the image from her dream could actually be real and killing people. She almost questioned if perhaps she remained sleeping.

“Mankoi naa lle sinome? Uuma ma' ten' rashwe, ta tuluva a' lle.”

As the man – no, he was an elf, “Like me!” – spoke several thoughts flashed through her mind seemingly all at once:

The language he had just spoken only served to deepen her confusion. She did not understand what he had said, but the language felt very familiar to her. He was the first of her kind she had seen in the years since she had been found by her convoy. “Could he know who I am?!” That thought excited her, but she had to push that aside. Now was certainly not the time, “Besides what are the chances that he would know me?”.

Even as she had this thought, a woman’s delicate features, very similar to her own, flashed before her mind’s eye from somewhere in her long forgotten memory. Siraya cocked her head just slightly, and her silver brows furrowed together delicately for a moment.

Siraya shook her head suddenly and ran a hand impatiently through her long silver tresses as her lips parted to speak. Before a sound was uttered, however, the man spoke again.

“I don’t know why you are here but any help is more than we had before. You’ve heard that this is something we can’t kill, but we may be able to send it back. If that sword of yours has any blessing on it then it may serve you will.”

"No, I have no blessed or magical weapons in my possession. I..”

Just then he reached around her and grabbed a vial from the table and said, ““Take this water vile, it may deter the evil if you splash it.” As he spoke Siraya took the vial and nodded.

“ If we survive the night I will introduce you to the others, provided you introduce yourself to me.”

She nodded again as he turned to do what he had to. She hoped that he knew what he was talking about, and as she turned, she opened the vial. Should the shadow re-enter, she would be ready to throw the water at it.

Subject: What the he...?!

Siraya was scrambling around the kitchen to find anything with which to make light. She was more than a little annoyed at being entirely ignored. She still hadn’t the first clue what was going on and she was starting to get upset. She stopped, as a thought occurred to her, and looked around at the others in the kitchen. Her eyes fell upon the one who had warned her to back away from the fallen man.

Just then a scream reverberated through the kitchen. Siraya whirled to face the doorway where the woman ran into the kitchen and was crying about a woman named Anna who had fallen victim to “it”. “What the he..” Suddenly the woman was grabbed by a dark tendril, Siraya couldn’t quite see what creature it could belong to. She stared at the woman with horror as the life seemed to just drain from her face and suddenly she was gone.

Before she could say anything, the doorway, where the woman had stood just a moment before, was filled with a dark shadow that seemed alive? “How is this possible? That’s what was in my dream..” She stood, at a loss as one man seemed to injure the shadow with a sword of light? “What the hell?!” Suddenly the shadow was gone. Siraya was having a hard time processing everything.

She ran over to the man who had spoken to her before, reached to grab his arm, decided against it, and let her hand drop to her side. Instead she moved to stand in front of him and asked the questions again, “WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?! WHAT WAS THAT?”

Subject: Finally!

Leanderia looked behind her to see if anyone was following, and to her great relief, they were. She trudged onward, certain she had come in a straight path toward the camp upon which she had stumbled and found help in the process. She thanked her lucky stars above for her good fortune in finding this group, most of whom were willing to help.

Then the bandit spoke, "It's just bout a mile in this direction, give 'er take a few steps either way."

Leanderia smiled and nodded to herself, “I knew I was on the right path. Good to know Malik’s training hasn’t gone to complete waste yet.” she thought.

"You're all gonna get your asses kicked.." and "Just let me go and be on your way, and you won't die.”

Her first instinct was to tell the scum just where he could shove it, but she refrained. She could just see the look on her Mother’s face if she knew what she’d been about to say. Leanderia might be a girl, but she’d heard enough talk from the knights as she grew up to know how to cuss with the best of them.

Once the group got close enough to the camp, “Listen, all of you.” Is the first thing Leanderia heard. She looked in the direction of the speaker, and saw it was the blue-eyed man. “Oh, he must be this group’s leader.” She thought as he proceeded to lay out a plan.

"If we hope to save this family, we have only one chance. We will offer to trade the prisoner for them." Leanderia started to protest, but thought better of it and snapped her mouth shut. The way this group had pulled together to help her with those men who were chasing her, they must know what they are doing. She was very concerned about the woman and her family. She was starting to feel a bit impatient. She prayed to anyone who would listen, that the woman and her family remained un-harmed.

"Remember, under no circumstances are we to attack first. If all goes well, we make the trade and go back. If not..... " Uryuu paused, looking at the fighter, then at the rest of the group. "Concentrate on protecting each other. Losing any person risks our mission."

"Now, if nobody has a complaint, we need to get to camp and back as quickly as possible."

And everyone started doing what they had to do to set the plan in motion. Leanderia sat back, as there was nothing for her to do at this particular point in time, and watched everyone curiously. These were certainly not the trained knights she was used to seeing. She had no experience in these matters past the little skirmish they just experienced a few moments ago. She did not know these people, and figured they had been together for quite a while the way they had banded together to dispose of the imminent threat which she had brought upon them. She frowned at that thought.

Leanderia watched as the Blue-eyed man disappeared through the shrubbery and trees on his way back to the camp they’d just left to obtain additional supplies, including manacles. “That one’s a curious one. He seems to have an air of mystery about him.” She thought of the moment he had offered her his own weapon, which wound up making him far more vulnerable to attack than he ever should have been. She could see his crystal blue eyes looking back at her as she had accepted his offer gratefully. “Of course his face and entire body being covered save his eyes, may be why he seems so mysterious. I wonder what he looks like…”

As her thoughts wondered about the blue-eyed man, she glanced around and noticed Basyl. He was keeping watch over their captive. “Hmmm. I believe he said his name is Basyl..something.” Leanderia smiled as she watched him momentarily. He was the first who had helped her when she needed it. He was a gentleman, though not like any she’d seen at the castle. Those men were soft and almost frail; too concerned with their appearance; weak. No. He was not like those men. He appeared strong and weathered. “But in a good way.” She thought.

Suddenly the little one kicked the bandit in the face. “Hmph!” Leanderia scoffed to herself. She could not for the life of her understand how this group of seemingly strong, good men wound up with one such as him. “First appearances aren’t always what they appear to be.” She could almost hear her mother’s voice saying the words in her head, but Leanderia shooed the thought away. “This one has shown what he’s made of. Nothing but a coward, is what I say.”

Leanderia dismissed the little one and thought about the elf. She had no idea what to make of that one. “He must not speak the common language. I wonder if he knew the elf bandit who died. He seemed so upset about….”

Suddenly Leanderia felt horribly sick to her stomach. In the commotion she hadn’t thought too much about it. Her training, along with her anger at what the bandits had done, and had tried to do, had kicked in and she just acted on instinct. But the consequence of her actions suddenly came barreling down upon her like a chunk of mortar wall falling from a defeated castle. She jumped up and ran behind a tree apart from the group and wretched violently, yet nothing came out.

She fell to her knees wrapping her arms around her stomach and rocked back and forth. Her body was wracked with the tears that pooled on the forest floor. “How could I have taken another’s life from him so easily, so thoughtlessly?!”

Leanderia was lost in her thoughts, contemplating her life-long desire to fight like the men she saw training every day. Her mentor had drilled her and trained her hard once she finally convinced him she could take it. But no amount of training could ever have prepared her for this. One who once lived, now no longer existed because of her. How was she supposed to reconcile that fact within herself?

She knew not how long she had been like that, but she suddenly heard the return of the blue-eyed man and the elf. Leanderia slowly stood and tried to compose herself. She pulled the leather strip out of her hair and let the long black tresses cascade down her back. If she had sat down just then, she would have sat on her hair. She fluffed out her curls slightly as she combed her fingers through her hair, then wiped her face as clean as she could. She cursed herself for giving in to her female crying. “Now these men are going to think I’m weak. Blast it all!”

Still mumbling to herself, and hoping against hope that no one would notice she had been crying, Leanderia walked back over to the group to see what was going on and do her part. As she listened she pulled her hair back up into a bun, securing the leather strap back in place. Then she followed the blue-eyed man as he showed her where her hiding place would be. He pointed at her and told her, "Wait here. If things go wrong, wait for them to come across the trip-line to you, and try to help Basyl out." She nodded in agreement then was taken by surprise when he added with feeling, "Stay safe. This will be far more dangerous than last time. Be on your guard."

Leanderia blinked at his last words to her and watched as he moved on to the next post with the elf, and whispered after him, “You stay safe as well, Blue Eyes.”

She shook her head to clear her thoughts, and to ready herself for whatever may come their way next. The plan to make a trade was a good one. She hoped they would not have to fight, for she did not relish the thought of killing another being. However, these were bad men, with no apparent morals or respect for other life. A picture of the man who had failed to assault her flashed through her mind’s eye briefly. It was enough to steel her resolve. No. She would not strike first, but she would fight if she had to, to make sure that family got out safely.

“You there, back away or prepare to defend yourself. “

“But I’m just tryi…” Siraya started to protest when she heard the male voice yelling for her to get away or defend herself, but thought better of it and jumped back away from the fallen man when she looked up and saw the source of the voice running toward them.

She did not know any of these people, nor did she know what the heck was going on here. She pressed her back against the wall and watched silently as the one who had ordered her back, then another, and yet another of the man’s apparent friends moved to his aid.

“What was that thing? What is going on? Is there any way I can help?” She asked as the three work over the man, trying to preserve his life.

As they finish their ministering, they raced off to the kitchen. She stands silent for a moment, “Could these be the people I have been looking for?” she wonders silently. Siraya shakes her head and double checks to make sure the man is taken care of before dashing down the stairs and tentatively enters the kitchen.

Seeing that there seems to be a need for a lot of light, Siraya begins assisting in lighting any candles, stoves, ovens that she can get to which have not already been lit. She asks again, not really expecting an answer, “What’s going on?”

Subject: Memories and a sick man..

Sariana remained on her knees before the king while others said their peace. Suddenly maniacal laughter echoed coarsely through the fairly empty throne-room. Sariana looked up to see a man, who looked about as insane as his laughter sounded, spouting some non-sense about them being spirits and challenging the king with his sword drawn!

Leaping to her feet, already gripping her own tanfas as she did so, Sariana blocked the man’s passage to the king. “Watch yourself stranger.” She practically growled at the man, “I have nothing left but my king. I could not protect my family from this life we live, but I will die now before I stand idly by and allow the likes of you, or anyone else, to threaten the life of my king.” She spoke with a sort of ferocious calm in her voice.

As she eyed the man carefully, it suddenly dawned on her that this man was terribly sick. Instantly she thought of her husband, “Alexander” she whispered almost too softly for anyone to hear. If only for a brief moment her last few hours with her husband became all too real again.

_____________

Three years ago Sariana had been forced to watch her husband waste away to nothing. Cursing the man she had loved for refusing to eat so that she and their daughter could have the meager rations that were allotted their family size. When she tried to do the same, so their daughter could have more, he refused to allow her to do so. “Who will take care of our little Sarita if you die as well, my love?”

“As well?!” Sariana had looked at her husband and had frantically kissed his forhead, his eyes, his cheeks, his lips, “No, my love! You are not going to die. I won’t let you!” she cried with vehement denial, even though she knew he spoke the truth. Her voice cracked as she spoke again, “You know I can’t do this without you, Alex, my love. You must get better!”

He shook his head and feebly reached up to caress her face as he had often done, but even such a minor movement as that was beyond his capabilities now. The time had come, and he knew it. He let his hand drop back to his side and laid in his wife’s arms, looking up into her tear-stained face as he let loose his last breath.

Sariana had held him in her arms, rocking back and forth, refusing to believe he was gone. She had known this man all her life. They had grown up together as children. He was all she had ever wanted and loved.

She didn’t know how long she had stayed there rocking her husband’s lifeless body, when her daughter’s cries finally seeped through her fog of despair. She slowly lifted her head and saw her baby girl, tiny, alone, and terrified as she stared back at her parents with wide eyes. Sariana silently cursed herself. She gently laid her husband’s body aside and took her daughter in her arms, and comforted her then; locking away all her own pain and anguish for she knew she did not have the luxury to mourn whilst she had this sweet little angel depending on her. Little did she know then that her pain was far from over, and the loss of her husband was nothing compared to the pain that was to come.

_____________

Sariana shook her head slightly and put her tonfas away. Eyeing him carefully, she realized he had no sheath for his sword, “Well, that explains the drawn weapon.” she thought to herself as she rushed forward to grab onto him in an attempt to steady him. “Careful, friend.” She does the best she can to help him stand, and says to him, “I am Sariana. Please let me help you.”

To the king she says, “My lord, I beg your indulgence, this man is ill. He needs to rest right away. He appears to be suffering from heat stroke and lack of water. The same that took my Alexander from me.” Sariana glanced at the man’s face and somehow knew he would not be swayed to leave the kings presence until such time as the king provided the answers he was seeking. So, she acted as a sort of crutch, allowing the man to lean heavily on her so as not to collapse right there, as he looked in danger of doing so at any moment.

Topic: The Last Blade Game
Subject: ...a fragile resolve beggining to form...

Sariana looked around as she and others convened before the king. They certainly did appear to be strong despite the fact that there were no plants left of any kind save the one solitary blade of grass within the king’s garden, no animals anywhere inside or outside of the city walls, and no water whatsoever. And so it has been for weeks.

After hearing the king’s words, she felt helpless. She bowed her head, staring at the floor beneath her feet, not wanting the king to see the hopelessness in her eyes. “Where else could any of us possibly search? With no more than 40 people left alive in the known world, and all of them inside this city, who could we possibly talk to that could offer any answers?” Had she any tears left to shed, Sariana would have shed them then, for she truly felt this was the end.

Her head snapped up as she heard the harsh and angry words spoken by the others present. She listened to their concerns and what they had to say, and looked to see the king’s response. She wasn’t sure if he even cared enough about the disrespect knowing they would all be dead within a couple weeks anyway. Still, she didn’t like the tone, and agreed with the dirty girl who spoke last.

Choosing, for now, to ignore the conversation around her she moved closer to the king and fell to her knees before him her hand reaching out to touch his feet. She looked down for a moment, trying to collect her thoughts before looking up at the king, a slight glisten in her eyes, almost enough for a tear.

“My lord, I beg of you, what more can we do? Who else can we talk to? There is nothing left in this city, and there is nothing outside these walls. We would all be dead before any of us could travel far enough to find anything…if there is even anything to find.” Sariana paused but for a brief moment, taking a deep breath before continuing, “If you know of a way, my lord, I beg of you, show it to us, and I will gladly and faithfully follow. However, I fear that as it stands…”

Sariana lets the sentence die off. She grabs the locked around her neck with her free hand and looks down at it briefly, thinking of her husband and daughter already lost a couple years before. She looks back up at the king, a fragile resolve beginning to form in her features, “Aye, tell me, my king, if you know of any possibility, I will follow your will or die trying to achieve it.”

The moment Siraya stepped back out into the hallway she looked around and saw the man who had warned her to get back in her room lying on the floor; unconscious? dead? She didn’t know which. She ran to him and knelt at his side. “This must be the man who uttered that horrible cry a moment ago.” she thought.

First she held her hand in front of his nose hoping his breath would touch her palm. As she did this she looked him over carefully, but briefly, to see what injury could have caused such a cry of pain. She could see none, and so she looked into his eyes, “Sir?” She lightly tapped his cheek as she called out to him again, “Sir? Can you hear me, sir?”

Subject: Sorry I'm Late! :(

A horrifying scream penetrated Siraya’s dreamless sleep; and she jumped to her feet, her sword in her hand at the ready; and the tent was filled with smoke. Realizing her convoy was under attack, and her home-on-the-road was on fire, Siraya dashed out of the tent she shared with her adopted parents, and ran right into a man just as he removed his blade from her father’s chest. She cried out her horror and cut the man down where he stood.

As the man fell, Siraya realized her mother wasn't there. “MOTHER!!” She frantically looked around trying to see her mother through the melee. “MOTHER, WHERE ARE YOU?!” Not able to see her, she began fighting her way through the chaos surrounding her until, finally, she found her mother. She knelt at her side the moment she reached her. She wanted to see her mother’s beloved face one last time, for Siraya knew her mother was dyeing. So, Siraya brushed the hair out of her mother’s face and a gasp of shock and horror was all she could utter, for all she could see was a dark void where her mother’s face should have been.

Siraya jumped to her feet and looked around and all the men who had attacked her convoy had been replaced by pulsating shadowy blobs, and they were all moving closer to her. She swung her blade and it passed right through the shadow, no harm having been done. The shadows were closing in, and there was nothing she could do about it, so she did the one thing she could do, and that was scream..

Siraya jerked upright in bed, reaching for her sword, gasping to catch her breath and looked around the darkened room. She heard some sort of commotion downstairs and quickly got out of bed and went to the door. She carefully cracked open the door and peered out. Just as she did so, a man came running up the stairs carrying some sort of light, and he yelled for her to get back inside her room.

She ducked back inside and quickly donned her armor and weapons before dashing out the door and into the hallway. She looked about to see what was going on …

((Ok, so right now Siraya is standing outside her room in the hallway. I don’t know what she encounters when she exits the room…. I sincerely apologize for the delay in submitting my post. But thank you, YeOlde for allowing me to do so. I didn’t expect you to wait for me, but I greatly appreciate that you did.))

Jozan, would it be at all possible to provide us with a map of the campsite? Leanderia can tell them there are 3 tents, and that there are 7 bandits left ('cause she killed one when they first captured her, the group killed three and has one in custody, and she had knocked one out, but he could be awake by the time they get there)

So a map to let us know what we're looking at when we arrive at the camp would be most helpful.

I figure we could all post that we are at the camp and what our next moves are gonna be before Jozan has to update...??

thoughts?

Yea, Leanderia would be against just outright killing the captive bandit. What happens to him, I guess really depends on what happens in the fight to come.

Maybe we can convince him to tell us which tent the family is in, and where Leanderia's weapons are.

So, what are Leanderia's chances of sneaking back into the camp (or someone else in the group doing so) to find the family in the event the bandit won't tell them?

Might be worth a shot to get them out of harm's way before the fighting begins. Fact is, they are currently slightly outnumbered. There should be 7 bandits in the camp at this time. One was kicked unconscious, but he may have come to by now. *shrugs*

He'd no doubt have a score to settle with Lea, because of her kicking his gonads, and relieving him of his remaining teeth.

SO...thoughts?

1. Anyone have the abilities/skills to sneak into the camp to check the tents for the family and try to get them out before they attack? And would Leanderia have a chance of succeeding at such an undertaking?

2. What do we do with the captive bandit? We can't watch him and fight at the same time, but it may not be very smart to just leave him unattended...So what should we do about him?

((In Response To Basyl))

Brushing his hair back from in front his eyes, Basyl took a step forward sheathing his blade-there was little point in cleaning it now- and cutting into a sweeping bow."Basyl To'chet, at your service m'lady." He speaks clearly, with sincerity in his voice.

Coming back up from his bow, ... his medium-length hair was loose and out of order- causing him to move it again before he spoke.

"Allow me to help put a stop to these fiends."

Leanderia watched Basyl perform his elegant bow and smiled as the man offered his sincere assistance and said, “And I am Leanderia. Thank you for your willingness to help.”

((In Response to Render))

She'd scarcely had time to take a breath when the little man addressed her next:

“Tell me... Lady, for I am afraid you did not indulge us with your name, as to what reason we help this family? Will they make us rich? Or is it a personal quest for yourself? I put to you that you are not going to help them... to help them, but in fact to settle a score for yourself. These bandits hurt you physically and emotionally is this not a fight for vengeance?” He said with cynicism in his voice.

A look of disgust began to form and grow more pronounced with every word the distasteful little man uttered. She looked him up and down, and wondered if it was he whom she thought she had seen when she first stumbled upon their camp. She hadn’t been sure she’d seen anybody, because before she had been able to stand back up he’d been gone.

“As I have just stated to Sir To'chet, I am Leanderia. I do not know who told you that the bandits hurt me physically. I can assure you, they did not;” She looked the little man over again, then added, “not that you care one way or the other. I will help these people because they cannot do it for themselves, and I, unlike some people apparently, will not…cannot just stand idly by knowing that that woman will not be able to protect herself the way I was able to protect myself.” She looked him over once more, her disdain for what he’d said quite obvious on her face.

It was then that she turned away from the little man to return the blade to the blue-eyed man, making a point to show she was not interested in anything else he had to say.

((Render's Second Statement))

“I do apologize for my rather brash statements, come let us be friends. Let's vanquish this evil, let's cleanse these woods, let's be heroes.” Render said unenthusiastically.

To say the least, Leanderia was rather skeptical that this little person had any interested in saving or helping anyone. The uninterested tone with which he made his declaration hinted at such. But She admittedly did not know him any better than he knew her, and as such she would just have to see what kind of being he truly was by his own actions. “Actions speak louder than words, after all.” She thought.

---

Leanderia watched as Blue Eyes slipped silently into the forest after stating he would follow behind. She looked at the others briefly and saw that Basyl was tieing up the only bandit still alive. She quickly moved to help him, "We must hurry. I only pray that woman is unharmed."

With that she headed out of the clearing in the same direction through which she had come.

(((Just on a side note, I took the liberty of replacing the ! at the end of your statement, Haruspex, with a period. I did so because the ! denotes enthusiasm and excitement, whereas the period does not, and you clearly stated that the comment was made unenthusiastically. If this is not ok, I will change it to the ! in my copy/paste.)))
