Topic: The Duchy of Richmond
Subject: The Duchy of Richmond

Welcome one and all to the Duchy of Richmond!

As far as Duchies go it is a small one, nestled on the frontier border of the kingdom.
Some quick ‘rules’ before we begin. I’m looking for everyone to post at least once a week, twice if we can manage it.

If you miss a post we won’t be waiting around for you. Let’s say that Thursdays are the start/end of our week, so if you haven’t made your post by each Thursday on we will go.

The Q&A post is here. http://www.rdinn.net/view_topic.php?topicid=4021

**************************************
I assume that Astrid (Lady Toralaian (Tor/Tora) Astiel Ravenwindhaven II) has contacted each of you with the basics of this initial quest. However to put everyone on the same playing field...

In the barony of Hood, the small logging town of Woodstock has come under some troubles as of late. A tribe of goblins (normally peaceable) has been raiding the village rather than trading with them... The young Lady Ravenwindhaven has volunteered to look into this problem, and her father has allowed her this quest. Either by Ducal order, friendship, or both you are all accompanying the young Lady North to Woodstock and on to the Goblin village.

Wanting this mission completed the Duke has provided you all with mounts and a fully loaded pack mule. It is early on a beautiful spring morning, the sun having just crested the horizon.

What do you do?

Subject: rules

All the existing rules that I can find are all based on intelligence. An animal has an intelligence of 1-2 and can learn 3 'tricks' per point of intelligence.

But vermin don't have an intelligence score. And I know there are rules out there for having vermin mounts...

But because the training rules are based on intelligence, and vermin doesn't have the score... by that rule it can't be trained and learn any tricks. :/

Unfortunately no. I hadn't gotten that far into the world building...

Subject: Vermin & unusual mounts

I've been looking into getting an unusual/non standard mount for a character of mine...

And I know that there are vermin mounts out there. But how does that work? The rules that I see is that to be able to be trained it has to have an intelligence... yet vermin don't have intelligence. So if I were to get one how would I train it? Is there some magical device that is needed/used? And how many tricks can a vermin learn?

The creatures I was thinking about as possibilities:
-Dire Weasel (large)
-Giant Wasp
-Giant Dragonfly
-Giant Spider
-Hippogriff
-Krenshar (large)

I would be interested in other ideas as well.

Topic: RPG War Stories: Episode 1- Noobs
Subject: ...

Sitting at a table eating a bowl of stew and drinking a flagon of mead, Padre couldn't help but overhear an amusing tale from the next table over.
He gets up and walks over.

That is an AWESOME story Finn! Kinda goes against the good alignment, and cleric thing... but an awesome story none the less.

I have a tale of noobs; though my noob tale is a little different.

I was DMing an existing campaign totally stealing the setting from 'The Pool of Radiance'... one of our players had moved away and we needed/wanted someone to fill the void.

A mutual friend of ours who had never played an RPG before and had only ever heard of D&D wanted to give it a try.

It was a lvl 10 game at the time, so as not to be underpowered he started there as a fighter.

The characters were sent out to recover treasure from a textiles factory complex.

The way to the plant was wrought with danger, and they had to run from a number of situations before even getting to the plant. Once they did arrive at the factory they made it in without issue. And they retrieved the treasure...

That was where the last little bit of luck ran out. The most veteran of the game out of all the players... playing an elf rogue stepped on a trap. And this wasn't just some little tripwire oh no... This was a magical trap that caused a large stone wall to appear blocking the road, on an angle set to fall on the group. Along with alarms, fire, and more.

The wall appeared separating the noob from the rest. However with a great feat of strength the fighter was able to stand the wall up straight so that the party wasn't turned into pancakes.

With the alarms blaring the bad guys started to pour out of the buildings all around... and the monsters they had run from on the way to the factory were drawn to the noise.

The veterans started to fight their way out... and the noob ran back the way they came.
Earlier they had passed a guard tower... thinking that being able to see for a distance would be a good thing at the moment the noob headed there.

While still a few hundred yards from the tower, the noob was stopped in his tracks by what he seen before him.
There were goblins in the tower shooting a ballista at his friends who were surrounded by an army of goblins, and orcs. In the distance there were a tribe of ogres coming in to finish them all off.

He knew there was only one choice. He headed for the tower.
He smashed through the almost rotten door and ascended the steps to the top. Despite the plate armour he was wearing he took the ballista crew by surprise and quickly dispatched them.

He then turned the ballista on the incoming giants. Through a series of completely legitimate rolls, he made only critical hits on all of the giants and ogres but one, dropping them in short order.

Seeing their allies being shot down by their own ballista, a host of goblins and the last remaining ogre storm the tower.
Hearing the enemy coming up the stairs he turns the loaded ballista to the door, and...

Pushes the ballista down the stairs, jumping on top screaming out a blood curdling war cry. He then rides the ballista down, plowing through, and over all the goblins on the stairs. Upon reaching the main floor with the ogre standing right there. He fires the ballista (with an impaled goblin on the spear) killing the ogre in one shot.

Seeing this most of the goblins and remaining orcs began to flee. And those that didn't were quickly dispatched.
The party regrouped and won the day.

I'm not completely opposed to bumping up the levels a bit. But I don't want to go too high because this was written for a beginner adventure/campaign. I could work with 3-4...

I've always been partial to the core books myself, but if there is something that you want from another book we can look at it on a case by case.

I would like at least two humans (the prince/princess being one) otherwise the standard.

I have an adventure written, but I have absolutely no issues taking it further, if that is what the demand is for

posts per week, IDK, 1-2 maybe... I don't know what the norm is.

As for the barbarian, and monk I don't think they are really fitting for the game I have in mind... and I just can't stand the bard... just my prejudice.

**************************

My brother (avid gamer) had asked me to write this up, for him and a few new to the RPG experience players. I get it all ready let them know then no call back on when they want to play.

So this has been sitting in a desk drawer for the last few years just begging to be played.

Well I had originally set this adventure/saga in a home made realm... but I have a thing for Forgotten Realms so that is a heavy influence.

It is going to start in the Duchy of Mandala. Which is comprised of the Counties: Richmond, and Young. and the Baronies: Hood, and Markham.

There is nothing quite like sitting down with your (young) kids and playing an adventure.

It is amazing how their little minds work, and figure out how to deal with the problems.

I pulled out the mini's and set up the table. My (7 year old) son played a fighter with a band of friends... their goal to kill the ogre and orcs harassing the countryside.

In less than an hour he killed them all. And not because i went easy on him... but because his mind works so much different than mine.

Depending on interest, I'm thinking about starting a 3.5 game.

The game I have in mind is a low level beginner type game. (Probably best for newbies)

I'm looking for the following positions:
lvl 1 fighter (prince/princess)
lvl 2 swordsman/archer (prince/princess' instructor)
lvl 1 cleric (advisor)
lvl 1 player choice (not a monk, bard, or barbarian) (friend to the others)

If interested let me know and we can work out details.

The Padre pushes open the door to the inn, looking for a nice filling bowl of stew, a flagon of ale, and some stimulating conversation, only to hear the crickets chirping, and a tumbleweed rolling across the floor.

He thinks to himself:
Whereabouts is the inn keeper? Where abouts are the great adventurers that once filled this great hall? Where are the dwarves and elves regaling their tales of many lifetimes spent on this earth?

"May the Gods breath some life into this fine establishment. Amen"

Topic: Get To Know Your Inn Mates!
Subject: My turn

Favourite cartoon/TV show from childhood? I would have to say that my favourite carton was ‘Recess’

What is your favourite type of shoe? Boots. I’ve always been partial to a good combat/hiking boot. And/or when working [in construction] steel toed boots.

Favourite Book? My favourite book is the bible. (I am a minister after all). But my favourite recreational book is probably Jean Auel’s ‘Earth’s Children’ series (Clan of the Cave Bear, Valley of the Horse, etc) though I am quite taken with the works of R.A. Salvatore and Robert Jordan, respectively.

Favourite candy? I don’t know if I have a favourite, but chocolate... Chocolate is good

What do you wish to get out of being a member of the Inn? I honestly don’t know. Just being part of a community of likeminded RPGer’s

What is your personal motto, your guiding thought in life?
Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV)
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

What's your most common character class you play? For me it depends on whether I’m playing in a group of people, or just as a solo character (Such as I am now with my Dad). If I am with others I tend to play Clerics. When I am in a solo campaign I tend to play fighters.

Lose the character, keep the gear (to be used by the surviving party), or keep the character, lose the gear (and have to completely rebuild your inventory)? With the game that I am currently playing... well I just started so either one... it wouldn’t make a difference. However generally speaking I would rather lose my gear over the character in long term games.

Your favourite/best time of the day to post? Any time. I’m generally online all the time (if not necessarily on this site)

Favourite Dragon (can be general or specific) I’ve always been partial to the Bronze Dragon. Out of all the Metallic dragons it is the most stereotypically ‘dragon’ looking (Though the silver is also a good one)

If you could be a tree, what kind of tree would you be? I would probably be an apple/cherry tree. I originally went to school to become a carpenter, and I absolutely loved working with apple and cherry for making things. And they both have delicious fruit.

What is the THIRD thing you do in the morning? Um... sit up?

Are you married or Single? I have been (and remain) happily married to my wife Tina for the past 7 years.

Favourite vacation destination? I can’t say as I have been on too many vacations, and most that I have gone on have been to go camping in the non descript bush a few miles up the road. So I guess that would be my vacation and fishing spot.

Have you ever made a psychiatrist need a psychiatrist? Not to my knowledge, though some of the people I have counselled have made me see one

What is your favourite vegetable? Corn on the cob is always good... but I’m up for most non cooked veggies... and generally speaking I can’t stand cruciferous vegetables.

Favourite Ice Cream Flavour? Vanilla plain and simple.

Favourite "hobby" (aside from the Inn, of course)? Well as there is a question a little later on stating Non RPG hobby... and since RPG’s are my favourite; that is what I will put here.

What's your favourite spell? I don’t know as I have one. They all have their uses and drawbacks... I guess Magic Missile

Will there ever be another RDINN Get Together? *shrugs*

Favourite hobby (besides RPG's)? I don’t know if this would be considered part of my profession or not But helping and advising others. I’ve been doing it since I was 14 and in no small way guided me in my career choice.

What is your idea of success? Success... um... IDK... completing what goals you have set for yourself. Even if that goal is to be happy with your family no matter the circumstance.

Who has been your greatest inspiration? I would say that my greatest inspiration in life has been my Father.

If you try to fail, and you succeed, did you succeed or fail? I would have to say both... You succeeded at failing, but you failed to succeed at the original task/goal.

If there’s something in your life that gets f***** up, will it happen again? Likely... Life is a b**** and S*** happens. And if anyone ever told you that life is fair, they lied. so something likely will get F***** up again.

Flora or fauna, and why? ...um... 42?

Favourite Wandering Monster? I would have to say that my favourite wandering monsters are any of the dire creatures.

Favourite Superhero: Iron man... I don’t really know much about superheroes... and I liked the movies.

Is a full body scan REALLY necessary? Depending on the situation... yes. It certainly beats a colonoscopy/body cavity search.

Who put the Ram in the Rama –lama-ding-dong? I really don’t know what to make of this question...

Why/how/when did you start gaming? I originally started gaming at the age of 9. After having been sent to bed, I was awoken by the noise of an argument coming from the basement... As it turns out it was an AD&D combat scene between my dad and uncle. I sat and watched from the stairs and was hooked. The next day I asked my dad about it... He then explained the game, and a few days later, my friends and I were rolling up characters and my dad was the DM.

If you had to choose a job from the past (before industrialized age) what would it be and why? I would be a cleric, just as I am now. Luckily my profession hasn’t changed much over the past few centuries.

How often do you wish you could play in person with the people you play-by-post with? I haven’t done a PbP game in years, and when I was playing them, I can’t say as I really had the desire to play in person. But I think that, that had more to do with the fact that it was a free form game, and not a rule based one.

Now for my question... What is your real life profession? I am a Universalist minister.

Both myself and my lvl 8 have magic weapons and armour, but aside from that, no special abilities beyond the basic class features.

And I don't really know about other resources... I've only just moved into the territory, and haven't even set up a permanent camp yet.
Though like you said this could be more a roll playing adventure, rather than a hack and slash.

Though I must admit I want to get my hands on the dragons hoard. I have a barony to set up and run and n o real monies to do so. (I have the landlord feat and because of that monies to build a keep/stronghold)
