Finishing a long day hiking with the sun low in the sky the group stops to make camp. Hawyn sets down his pack with a sigh; standing up knuckling his back and stretching. Kneeling down beside his pack he reverently pulls out a beautifully preserved and finished hardwood case. He sets the case down on a nearby stone. Despite the uneven surface the case sits perfectly level. The top of the case is perfectly smooth other than a single indented circle about the size of a coin.

He removes from his pack a flask of Holy water, and Aspergillum, pouring the holy water into the implement. Knowing what is coming next the others step out of the way. Offering prayers to God, Hawyn begins to spin the Aspergillum over his head spraying the holy water over the area. When the implement runs dry he returns it to his pack.

Continuing to offer prayers to God, he opens a drawer on the case. Removing from it a small stone coin. He places the coin into the indentation on the top of the case. As soon as the coin falls into place; a shockwave of blue light bursts forth from the stone. All the lose stones, sticks and twigs, and all manner of vermin are pushed and driven out of the area. The light continues to pulse from the stone while Hawyn removes an altar cloth and candles, finalizing the furnishing of the altar. When the final candle is lit a final pulse of light emits from the altar, settling over and into the land.

When all is completed there is a feel of holiness about the area. The grass is a little greener, and the air a little sweeter. There is a ring of twigs, and pebbles surrounding and outlining the area. The case turned altar now emanating a soft benevolent power. The others return to the area and finish setting up camp.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes it is meant to be as part of a larger piece. Not knowing the aspergillum really doesn't surprise me... It is a rarely used piece of religious paraphernalia, and many people even in the religious community don't know what it is

I will try a revision

Topic: Would you like to write for the Inn?
Subject: Interested....

[I have not read all the above replies]

I'm certainly interested in writing something (articles or somesuch) for the Inn. This used to be a place of bustling activity... Now the crickets chirping is a more common sound than the clash of sword on steel, and tankards of ale being passed around.

I would like to say a prayer and perhaps do a little more. But I have no idea as to what to write.

I'm somewhat surprised at how dull the forums are. I see people pop in and out of the inn, but it seems that people only post on their games, if they post at all.

At least we can try and change the way things are.

Topic: Clerics and other Divine Casters
Subject: Though this post is a few years old....

When it comes to clerics I have found for the most part it simply comes down to the RPing.
Though I play 3.5 I make good and solid use of my 2ed Priests handbook for how to play the different aspects of the cleric class. (though I do have a bit of a leg up in playing a cleric)

From my experience IMO adding prestige classes to single class clerics tends to weaken them, or set them on such a specific path that they are less than useful in other situations.

So I would just look at the way you RP the character rather than add more to it.

Topic: Core Rules Conundrum
Subject: My answer

As far as the different versions goes I'm a 3.5 kind of guy.

And I must say as far as 3.5 games go I prefer to play core rules only. I find that a lot of the expansion packs just complicate things. Especially when the characters start taking classes from different books.

The only variation on the core rules that I keep as a house rule is that if you can give me a valid reason why your character would know a skill that is not normally a class skill you can have it as a class skill.

Though when I'm playing 2ed I much prefer to use all the class/race handbooks. But I think that has more to do the RPing base that 2ed has over 3.5

Topic: When a paladin falls
Subject: The Fall.

I have had it happen twice... Which I will get to in a moment.

In the case where you mentioned your paladin killing a defenceless boy... That really isn't 'the fall' IMO. Now it is certainly something that would make him lose his divine abilities... but it is also something that he could atone for and continue on his paladiny way.

For the cases I have DMed and a paladin fell the first was expected. We were playing a neutral game (but wanting to play an evil one) The paladin character wanted to become a blackguard, so when we reached an appropriate point in the game... he suffered a trauma (his wife and son killed by another paladin being tested by their god). He went on a rampage killing the offending paladin forgoing his religion and becoming a blackguard. And we became an evil campaign.

The second time it happened it was a campaign that had been running for some time. The paladin wanted to change classes... so started doing things against his code of honour. In the end he fell because his alignment changed and didn't bother to atone. Then on his next level took a level in sorcerer.

Now in both of the above cases (while they wanted to be paladins) the players made some bad choices (much like what you mentioned with your game) and it just gave a new dimension to the game, because now they had to atone for their choice. Each time it was a reason for the next adventure, and any pall the fall may have caused was forgotten with the act of atonement.

Even though this thread is quite old.... I do have a suggestion to help improve the chat...

Or at least it was a suggestion made to me...

On another site that I frequent I brought up the issue of the flickering chat here. This other site used a third party chat provider while they were getting their new chat up and running. And that free third party chatroom would likely work well for the Inn as well.

"Dangerous... Na. Who would attack someone in Richmond?" he sighs, "But is it kinda hard to take down a rabbit or pheasant if you don't have something to take it down."

With that he moves his foot, exposing two rabbits, and a pheasant.

The farmer, a scowl on his face, pulls the reins bringing his load to a halt. He firms his grip on the crossbow.

The ride out of the Castle is enjoyable. Not so cold out as to need a heavy coat, not so hot as to be unbearable while riding. There is a hedge along both sides of the road and it is a sparsely wooded country of rolling hills.

At first out of the castle the road is yours. But within an hour of riding you see a farmer riding on his loaded haywain heading towards the castle a loaded crossbow sitting across his lap.

When you arrive in Mandala at the tavern, two stable boys come out to take your horses.
The barkeep is alone at the bar wiping it down. And there is only one other patron sitting at the back of the room, eating some bread and cheese. He ignores your entrance.

***************************
Feel free to take a bit of liberty in Role Playing these situations.

What I'm thinking is that I'll give information up to a point (in this case the border of Hood) then you's can RP up until that point. Then I'll give more information, etc, etc.

So ATM looking for a little more RPing.

Topic: The Duchy of Richmond Q&A
Subject: Ayrn

Yes Mandala is the town just right of Richmond Castle.

You are free to bypass it, but that would require going off road. I figure it would just be faster and easier to go through...

Woodstock is where the road ends in Hood. The reason it is shown as huts is that it is a temporary settlement.

The Red huts icon is the Goblin settlement. (the exact location is unknown as they are nomadic.)
The red icon at the top is an old ruin predating the current age. (but the characters don't know about it)

The small tan huts are logging camps feeding into Woodstock. They don't have names, and they move every few months.

For this leg of the journey you have complete freedom to role play interactions with the farmers, merchants, etc. (so long as you keep it reasonable )

And when you reach the border it is going on evening, and time to make camp.... There is a well used cam site at the border.

Topic: The Duchy of Richmond
Subject: The Duke

Just as you all mount your horses, Jarvice (The Duke's Seneschal) comes out the front door. "Announcing, His Grace, Rothhelm Ravenwindhaven the VII, Duke of Richmond!"

"Jarvice, I thought I said not to do that." The duke said smiling, as he walked into the courtyard. He cast his gaze over the assembled party looking each member in the eye. His gaze settling on Callin as Callin took a bite of the sandwich, the duke’s face turning sour. Turning back to the group at large, “I just wanted to wish you all luck for this quest. We have always been peaceful with the Goblins. Find out what is causing this hostility.”

Rothhelm walks over to his daughter, pulling her into a hug. Speaking quietly so that only she can hear, “Tor, you may be a knight at heart, but you are still my baby girl. Stay safe out there, and don’t take any guff from anyone. I love you.”

“Now go on all of you, and may the gods speed you on your way.”

***********************************

Just for reference sake, it will take two days riding to reach Woodstock. The first full days ride will bring you through the town of Mandala, and on to the border of Richmond and Hood.
The trip through Richmond is uneventful. You pass a few farmers, a merchant train, and some random travellers.
The border between the County and Barony is marked by a series of upright stones spaced a few hundred feet apart, with one stone on either side of the road. 300 yards past the boarder is the beginning of Hood Forest.

Note: Feel free to roll play in between the castle and border. (or even more in the castle)
