Welcome Ayrn, welcome.

I really hope it's safe for Arvin to spend the night outside the town.

Marius was pleased to walk on the cobble stones again. Not because of the street itself, but rather because of what it represented. He was after all a city dweller to the bone. Sure, he didn't mind the long riders into the wilderness every now and then. And he was able to live off the land if need be. But given the choice, the templar would pick a proper bed, a real meal and a seat by the fireplace over anything the nature would be able to offer. And now, this little, strangely familiar town would offer him just what he needed after spending two nights outside: amenities.

It didn't take long for Marius and his companions to find out the reason for the familiar feeling. It dawned upon them all more or less at the same time. The village didn't just look the same way the one they had left only two nights ago had. It was the very same village. They could see the familiar buildings they'd visited previously. The Boar on Rotation was there as was the library. What was missing was the pole and the pyre, fortunately. However despite the oddness of the situation, the first thing popping into Marius's mind was not about what had happened or how it was possible. No. The question leaping fo his lips was: "Who was the woman they burned as a witch?"

But as quickly as the question had come, it was replaced by others that seemed to occupy all of their minds: "How the hell was this possible? What sort of magic was playing around with their heads? If this really is the town from before, how long did they have until the mists would appear and what would happen then?" Looking around Marius got even more baffled by what he saw. If this was indeed the same place, then from where did the hills surrounding it appear? Last time they had only seen fields…

If the look on the villagers' faces were suspicious, then the witch hunter's own mirrored theirs. He knew better to keep his hands away from his weapons, but he was ready to draw either the pistol or sword at any hint of danger. The people in the town were definitely afraid of something for some reason that was as of yet unknown to Marius. The appearance of a group of well armed strangers certainly could make anyone nervous, but there seemed to be something more than that behind their fear.

Mylos voiced his exact thoughts of what they should do next as he hissed his response to Ark: “Silence you fool. Keep cool all of you. We must pretend we have not seen this town before. We book rooms for the night, whilst I figure out when the event may occur. See the librarian? The horse carving was on the table, perhaps we can measure the time they will come by the stage he is through the carving.”

Nodding, Marius looked at the inn. "Doesn't look like it's crowded tonight. I will go and get us rooms." It was very rare for the dark sendrian to ride a coach as he preferred the freedom a personal mount offered and he certainly never walked anywhere. Therefore it felt a little strange to have no horse to dismount or no reins and instructions to give to the stable boy. Shrugging at the thought, Thullman stepped through the Boar's front door taking in the familiar details of the common room. He couldn't help the nagging feeling in the back of his mind saying he should leave the place right away.

OOC: Marius is accustomed to having the best room available and will demand such from the innkeeper (if present) this time too. He will also ask for a room for everyone in the group and order them all a proper meal. He'll take care of the of the costs as well.

Mine was a dwarf using the Moldway's Basic Rules D&D red box from 1981 or something. The year was 1985 or 1986, if I remember right. He managed to kill an evil party member mage with a punch in the face.

Next up was an assassin from the 1st edition Ad&d I think. Boy that was a looong time ago.

Marius Thulmann wasn't happy. No. That was an understatement. He was pissed off big time. It had been a long time since he'd slept the last. Spending the night in a strange forest leaning onto a trunk of a twisted tree wasn't exactly his idea of a good night's sleep. Sure, it hadn't been the first time sleep had eluded him or the first night he had been forced to stay awake for a few days, but this time it wasn't just any stop for camping overnight beside a road somewhere in the kingdom. This time none of the group had any idea about their whereabouts… But at least it wasn't raining.

All the walking in circles and trying to find their way out of the weird forest hadn't done anything to improve the witch hunter's mood. On the contrary, he was even grumpier and gloomier when the evening caught them once more. Nothing had changed in a full day. They were still in the same woods looking to get out. It was getting even stranger to the templar than the fog covered empty village which had somehow disappeared. He had never known the brathun to make a mistake in directions. The gnome somehow always seemed to know which way to go even when Marius's own sense of direction had failed a long time ago. It was as if some powerful magic was trying to stop them from leaving the forest.

The next night hadn't been much better. It felt like he hadn't slept a minute, but Marius knew better. The exhaustion had overwhelmed him at some point he was sure. For even if his back was still sore from the bumps in the tree trunk, his mind seemed a bit more refreshed in the morning. But having dozed on and off a few times during the night hadn't done much to his spirits. The witch hunter still wanted to strangle someone, even if only figuratively speaking.

Then some time during the afternoon a miracle happened, or so it felt to Marius. They finally found some indication of civilization in the wilderness - a dirt road. Miracle or not, it certainly did wonders to the sendrian's mood. He wasn't happy of course, no. Had he bothered to think about it, Marius probably wouldn't have even remembered the last time he'd felt happy. No he wasn't happy, but he felt somewhat pleased about the possibility of a nearby town or a village. Picturing the map of Ertain in his mind, the witch hunter wasn't too sure there should be a road or a settlement anywhere near their current location. Then again he didn't have much clue about where they were, did he. Shrugging, Marius looked at Mylos for a confirmation of the direction they should pick. Receiving a shrug as a reply, the dark man nodded and started following the road to the direction closest to where they had been heading before.

Soon the forest turned into a more inviting and pleasant one and they could even catch fleeting glimpses of critters amongst the undergrowth and the trees. It was nice, but what was even nicer was the smoke from a number of chimneys rising high up in the air from a village that suddenly appeared before them as the road headed into a slight valley ahead. The buildings resembled those of the village they'd left behind a couple of days ago, but that wasn't much of a wonder of course. All villages looked the same at first glance. But what was different about this one were it's people. They were still there.

Anna began singing, but soon her beautiful voice quieted down as the group stopped to take in the view. It wasn't the village however the others seemed to worry about, but a puppet tied to a nearby tree instead. It felt somehow surprisingly lifelike although it was clearly made of leather and had buttons for eyes. Marius had never seen one quite like it before, but he'd seen similar attempts to scare away strangers before. For that's what he believed it to be - a scarecrow for men. It very much seemed like the village wanted to be left alone.

Not saying a word, Marius was about to start walking down the slope towards the small village when Ark voiced a suggestion:

“Perhaps, we should move back toward the forest and get a good night’s sleep before we enter into this strange place. “I can call up a nice shelter and tomorrow we can investigate the village,” the mage shrugged then and continued with a smile, “I guess we’re not going to get that pint this evening after all Anna.””

When the mage had finished, Marius let out an audible sigh and turned to face him. "Listen Arvin. You can do whatever you want, but I'm heading down there. Your magic is powerful and useful indeed and I appreciate the fact that it's on our side. But right now the idea spending another night in the woods, no matter how nice your summoned beds and shelter would be, doesn't really sound inviting. I want a real bed, some real hot food and a pitcher of wine. I'm sure we'll end up spending plenty of nights outside in the future as well and I'll gladly accept your offer then. Right now the village wins. I'm not going to start wondering about every town we see whether it's safe to enter or not."

There was no anger in the witch hunter's voice, disappointment at most. He'd just had his share of camping outside for now. Besides more than the things he'd mentioned a heartbeat ago, Marius was eager to know where they were.

Err... Don't mean to be rude here or anything, but I see absolutely no reason for the group to stay in the woods for the night. It's just another village with obviously people still in it.

It would be quite odd and paranoid in my opinion for us to start suspecting every village or town out there, don't you think? Like Almerin said it offers a warm bed, a warm meal and perhaps even a drink or three versus the idea of staying in the forest even if we'd have magical beds and food available.

Marius definitely will head for the village. Sorry to be seemingly against your ideas all the time. That's not my intention and I promise it won't last through the whole game. But right now I see nothing saying we shouldn't go into the village.

Subject: Die goblins!

Danamar blinked his eyes once, then another time and then once more just to be sure. Even then it was hard to believe what he was seeing. Seg and Drog weren't the first dragons he had seen, but they certainly were the strangest ones. Try as he may the elf could not remember having ever read anything about halflings turning into tiny dragons in any of lore books in his home town library. And although he'd long time ago heard something about the most the powerful drakes being able to walk amongst the men in disguise, even those had been just stories. But halfling dragons? And to make things worse, they'd just turned invisible. Danamar could only hope they were on his side.

The pony-sized dragons were causing mayhem and terror in the goblin horde. Battered and torn little bodies were tossed this way and that as none of the goblins even tried to defend himself. For a heartbeat or three Danamar almost felt sorry for the screaming humanoids, but the feeling passed as quickly as it had come. They'd brought their fate upon themselves and had to now suffer the consequences… And so would he by the looks of it, as twenty and some of the little monsters were running for their lives directly towards him.

There wasn't much time to think let alone plan for some kind of action, so the ranger did what came easiest to him. He let his hatred towards all things goblinoid rise to the surface. Drawing his brother's slim, beautiful sword Danamar waited for the goblins to come closer. The dark-haired elf knew he was playing a gamble with his life, but he wasn't going to step aside and let anyone think he was afraid of the greenskins, for he wasn't. Ever since his family and friends had died at the hands of the orc war party, Danamar had known he would one day meet his doom in mortal combat against some evil monster. He really had nothing to lose. No one would miss him.

So as the panicking goblins made their way to the top of the slope, Danamar let the first few pass his hiding place before jumping up. Towering over the creatures half his size, the ranger gave the already startled goblins his most terrifying roar of hatred and rage and charged through them towards the wagon striking at anything that came within his reach. There was no concern for his own life left. There was no mercy in his gleaming emerald eyes. He only wanted the goblins dead.

OOC: Danamar will not pursue any goblins or even try to stop their escape. He will simply cut his way through the lot of them unless they suddenly summon courage from the backbone they don't have.

Nice posts again guys. Just wanted to point out one aspect of Marius. He's definitely not a loose cannon or shoot first type. No. He's actually very skilled in judging characters and likes to observe people as much as possible. But on some occasions that just doesn't do the job and a more direct approach is required.

However I' m not saying he might not appear that way to Mylos or someone else for that matter. Of course The gnome can have that kind of a view of Marius and I'm more than ok with that.

Just wanted to clarify that we're not talking about some "regular" gun crazy fighter here.

Subject: What? Where?

It wasn't the first time someone he was interrogating was completely mad, delusional. And Marius feared it wouldn't be the last either. But the old man's words, though making little sense, intrigued the witch hunter very much. He let the clerk carry on his rant without saying a word, just as he hadn't said or reacted in anyway to Anna's threatening voice. They might have different ways of handling problems, but the templar knew the woman was not foolish enough to attack him over this madman.

The old man went on about how Marius and his companions were some evil beings from the mists who came around every now and then to take away people, young boys even, from the village. Apparently he'd lost all connection with the real world as he claimed a witch hunter carrying the holy symbol of Rydor around his neck to be some sort of a demon. But still Marius let him carry on.

Putting on a slight struggle in vain, the man went slack again and continued with a tired and somewhat sad voice about the one burning at the stake. A scapegoat it seemed. Someone had been picked up to calm down the villagers and the mayor had decided to make a terrible sacrifice probably hoping himself it would somehow stop the disappearing of kids from the town. Shaking his head slightly Marius wished he could get his hands on the mayor. It happened so often in situations like this. Scared people wanted desperately to find someone to blame, so desperately that they didn't bother to make sure the one they caught really was guilty.

Suddenly the eyes lit up again on the face of the Jusarin's follower. His hand shot up faster than Marius would've imagined possible and grabbed the witch hunter's collar with surprising strength. The templar didn't even flinch as he was pulled closer, but stared right at the gleaming mad eyes.
“And when the flames reached her she cursed this town. She cursed them all, face by face, for their injustice. She cast them into smoke as she herself was wrapped in it. It is irony how you came when she demanded it, while it was you who had cornered her to begin with. It is irony, and with irony I curse you equally, with your bodies made of ash and your eyes produced from flame. May Jusarin…”

The cleric's words were cut off mid sentence. That in itself wasn't much of a surprise. It happened quite often with possessed or otherwise delusional people. Even the blindly staring eyes fit the picture perfectly well. In Marius's experience two things usually happened. Either the rant began again after a short while - and often it really started again from the very beginning repeating everything word to word - or the person blacked out. What happened this time though, took even the hardy warrior completely by surprise…

Little by little the man seemed to turn into mist. No matter how hard Marius tried to squeeze his fingers around the cloth of the robe he couldn't hold on to the cleric. In a few heartbeats the old man was gone and in his fist was only thin air. The witch hunter turned his head to look at his companions and received a few shrugs and head shakes as an answer to his silent question. No one had any idea what had happened. Shrugging himself, Marius turned towards the doorway. "Well I guess we might as well head back outside to see if there's anyone else left."

But in the dark and misty evening it would be senseless to go looking for anyone. It was a common decision to return to the wagon and the horses and head to the inn for the night. But something was terribly wrong. They walked for way longer than they should've to reach the horses and found nothing. Not even the houses surrounding the square. And none of the mounts responded to whistles and shouts either. All they could really see was the cobble stones of the street going forward. Drawing his sword Marius took the point and walked on warily until his heavy boots met grass instead of the street. And behind them, the cobblestones had disappeared too.

Slowly the witch hunter turned to face his companions looking them each one by one in the eye. "Anyone have any idea what happened? Do you have some divination magics available to tell us where we are? The crazy old man spoke of the mists or some people from the mists abducting their kids. Have the mists now taken us as well?"

Subject: Who is leading the goblins?

Forest of Frie. It didn't feel like an inviting place it should have for Danamar. There was something wrong about the forest. The druid couldn't tell if it was just the goblins and other beastly humanoids that seemed to live in great numbers within the woods or if it was something else. Back at home the orcs and worse had invaded the forests and scared away the animals, but even then the birds had always returned sooner or later. This place gave the elf the creeps, but instead of wanting to run away, he felt an urge to find out the reason for such a feeling.

When the search party finally located the camp of the goblins, the enemy's sheer numbers took Danamar by surprise. He could see, to his relief, that the halflings were still alive and apparently doing fairly well too at least physically. Yet a feeling of hopelessness started to overwhelm the elf. How on earth where they going to rescue the poor couple without getting themselves killed in the process as well. Considering their options, his sharp eyes focused on Drog and Seg… Where they actually smiling?

Kneeling down close to each other the foursome started to go through their options. One idea was to lure the goblins, or at least the most, away from their captives meanwhile one or two of the group would sneak in to set the halflings free. It sounded like a good plan to Danamar. Using a decoy would be their best chance to rescue Drog and Seg. But then Rex reminded them of something, something that felt very much unimportant to the elf. They were supposed to bring back the treasure wagon as well. Damned, he thought. Aren't their lives more important than gold? Disgusted about the idea, but knowing Rex would not leave the wagon behind, Danamar turned his eyes back at the camp of the goblins.

The ranger's gaze carried across the clearing taking in all the details. He quickly counted an estimate of the goblins coming close to 150 beasts. That was tens times more than their little group could take on in a direct combat. Even if they could cut down the numbers with bows and arrows first, there would still be some ten dozen of the ugly little things to kill. That was not going to happen.

There was a beautiful little spring nearby the treasure wagon on the somewhat rectangular shaped clearing. Or it would've been beautiful, but the elf was fairly sure the goblins had defiled its water beyond drinkable. Most of the goblins were gathered around the wagon and watching at someone or something who Danamar was not quite able to see. A leader perhaps? We need to know more before we do anything though the halflings may not have much time left.

Looking back his companions, the elf spoke softly: "I will go around quietly to take a closer look at the other side of the wagon. Let us meet here in a short while." He waited for any objections for a couple of seconds before nodding to the decision and started down back the way they had come to the camp.

Moving slowly and silently for a hundred yards or so, the ranger turned to the left to circle around the miniature valley. He moved now faster and with more confidence as he was alone in his environment without having to worry about the noise the dwarf and the knight were making. Having gone around far enough, Danamar began to head back towards the goblin camp. He crouched down for the first 50 or 60 yards, but as he got closer to the ridge, the elf automatically dropped down on his stomach and started crawling to make himself less visible.

We would be happy to see another game running in here and it's always great to see DM's using the Audalis setting created by our dear Webmaster t_catt11.

Many of us have created material into Audalis, some more, some less. And even more us have contributed to the campaign world via the games we've enjoyed all around the fantastic Antaron.

So like said by cdnflirt above, you are definitely free to use Audalis in your game(s) be it free-form or rules-based and you're welcome to create new stuff into it in the progress. Of course any new material will be approved by Olan first before it becomes "official". But in the games anything goes.

Welcome welcome Red to our wonderful online home! Always good to see new faces around. Apparently you've been warned about the two dangers that lurk in our corners, The Gruggster and Eol. So I'll skip that one. They're ofc not dangerous at all, but dear friends instead.

And you've caught the spirit of RDI pretty nicely too. It's all about having fun with the other Innmates be it playing, chatting or something else. We love and accept any and everyone no matter what their religion, skin color, nationality, sexual orientation, age or well even political opinions. We're one big family in here and it's wonderful to get more members in it.

As for Faerun, you're very welcome to run a game in the Realms as well. Audalis is just another option although many of us have grown to love it during the years.

Once again, Welcome!

Alacrity, you know you have special spot in my heart. A spot our 10+ year friendship and kindred spirits have made possible. I will always support you in any decision you make, be it of this scale or less. I'm sure leaving the games behind was a tough call as I know how much you put love and effort into each and every one of them. But given the options you had, I'm fairly sure making up your mind wasn't so difficult after all. Family must and will always come first.

And since I and most of us here at the Inn, I'm sure, consider you an integral part of our second family, I'm glad you won't be leaving completely. However more than being a part of you game, I wish to one day soon fulfill my long time dream of meeting you and yours in person. It's a long flight over the big A. But one day we'll do it. Topic: Shadow Cathedral Q/A
Subject: Oh oh

Oh dear. I have a bad feeling about this...

Guys, I don't of course know the alignments of your characters or how they view the world in general although Marius sure would. And I'm not saying you're not playing your characters the way you should. Quite on the contrary.

Actually I can relate to the way Anna and Arvin reacted to Marius's intimidating behavior towards the old clerk. I really can... In real life. However... It's not a real life we're talking about or playing in. It's a dark fantasy world setting resembling that of our world in the Middle Ages or even the Dark Ages.

Now think about this for a second: We come upon a town that is totally devoid of people except for a witch burning at the stake. It is clear from the evidence that everyone has simply disappeared - be it fleeing something/someone or not. Only one person seems to be remain in the town and he's a mad man by the sound of it.

We are a group of heroes who have together fought evil in multiple forms - man and monster alike. We live in a world where an assassin can turn himself invisible and stab anyone through the heart with a poisoned dagger. And that assassin may in fact be a demon or a poor soul possessed by a witch or a devil for all we know. It's a world where anyone could basicly be the enemy in disguise.

I know I'm painting a dark, grim and pessimistic view of the world here. Or perhaps it's the view of a paranoid person or perhaps it's the way someone who wishes to prepare himself against the evil powers would view the world.

However, I'm sure none of your characters would have difficulties in striking down an enemy, be it a human, elf or orc when defending themselves. But yet, yet you are ready to cast spells at a trusted companion when he grasps an unknown man by his robe?

Did anyone cast a Detect Evil or Know Alignment on the man? Or perhaps a Detect Magic to make sure he's not under the influence of some evil being? Do we really know we can trust this crazy old man who is only shaken by something evil he has witnessed? Do we?

Also do remember that Marius works for the church of Rydor, the god of Truth and Justice. And he is operating under a mandate from the King of Ertain too. Though he may be threatening the man, he would never kill him unless he is proven guilty for terrible crime or would attack Marius or his companions. But Marius will learn the truth from the man even if it would require touching his robe and threatening him. He isn't pulling out teeth or beating a confession out of him, now is he?

Now please do excuse me, if the rant above has an angry tone to it. That is definitely not my meaning. Do forgive me if what I'm trying to say doesn't come out right. English is not my native tongue after all and I can't probably express myself the way I'd like to.

All I'm trying to say, that I've loved all the posts so far and I really do wish to play with you through this adventure. And I definitely don't take this personally or hold it against any of you. But I'll have difficulties turning Marius into something he is not. He is after all a Lawful Neutral witch hunter working for the church and the king. He is doing the work neither of his masters is willing to do openly, but know is required.

But I will not of course ruin the game for everyone with my character. If it becomes obvious that Marius doesn't fit into the group, I'll drop him and create a new, better suiting character with Almerin's permission of course.

Again I'm sorry if I offended anyone by this post.
