I too am eager to post more and will probably drop in a background post at some point. Right now however there's not much Gortag can do other than move out. A post from Nimu would be nice.

Subject: Will post as soon as I can

However at the moment, I have to say I'm too exhausted to put any effort into a sensible post of any kind. Saara wakes up at 5.30 every morning and I just cannot force myself to go to bed early enough to get a proper night's sleep. Maybe tonight I'm tired enough to do so though...

Sorry about that, friends.

"Hmpf", the bald dwarf puffed as he whirled around and saw the second illithid slump on the ground. His swing would've carried the heavy blade of his axe through the other mind flayer's body as well, but now he had to stop the strike in mid air. "Hrmpf". Killing the monster had required just as little effort as Gortag had suspected or actually he hadn't thought about it all. Sometimes combat required some planning, but most of the times the Slayer only had his instincts to guide him through a battle. This time the lithe body of the illithid hadn't even provided any resistance for his potent axe or the dwarft's mighty muscles.

Seluraiiel beat Gortag to the third opponent using the incredible powers of her mind and magic to halt the human's escape with a snap of her fingers. The odd duo had fought the evil together before on a number occasions and no longer was the tattooed dwarf surprised by the display of the elven sorceress's might. Still he considered himself fortunate to have her standing on the same side of the thin line that separated the good from the evil. Gortag Grimnirsson had slain more wizards and witches than he could remember, but never had he faced anyone as powerful as the elf. Not that fighting anything or anyone would scare the Slayer anyway.

"A beheading?", the beautiful sorceress asked with her singing voice. "Gortag I would have thought one such as you would have found a much more creative end for the vile thing. Perhaps splitting it in two... groin first."

Even in the near darkness, the orange-bearded warrior could see the hint of a smile in the corner of the elf's mouth. It was like it had always been between the two heroes. They were teasing each other with nasty remarks, but in all honesty Gortag had to admit he liked the pointy-eared woman. He would not go far enough to call her a friend, for all the friends he once had had perished long before he had entered the Temple. And if anything, Gortag hated losing a friend. Having friends on his line of business was dangerous, especially so for the ones he let close.

"Groin? When was the last time you looked under one of those ugly robes the squids wear? They don't even have a groin like the one you mean here. They're frigging self sufficient on that department… or so I'm told." Gortag humphed again an continued in his deep and somewhat raspy voice: "And besides that thing is one of the lowliest creatures out there and does not deserve to experience the beauty of the exquisite Gortag swings… Naah… But you're right. Cutting its head off wasn't what I should've done. I should've bashed its slimy tentacle face in with the butt of my axe instead and ripped those suckers off one by one." Finishing his rant, the dwarf spat on the illithid's body and turned his gaze at the seized human.

"The two illithids have been dealt with but one question remains. What to do about him?" the faery punctuated her words with a gesture towards the unmoving man. Gortag rubbed his beard and shrugged. "Probably doesn't matter. The flayers have sucked half of his brain out anyway. Don't think he'll go running for help and even if he does, they probably wouldn't listen to him." The dwarf wiped the blood of the illithid on the monster's robe and shrugged again. "Just tell him to stay here."

Gortag took a couple of practice swings and rolled his shoulders to get his blood running. It was more out of habit than need, since the divine power in his Axe had been providing him energy beyond the levels of even the strongest of dwarves warriors for a hundred years… or more. It was probably one thing that had kept him safe over the years or centuries that had passed since the day they all had been put under the spell. With the thought, the dwarven warrior turned to his elven companion. "It's been centuries, probably even millennia since we last set our feet outside this temple… How long, it doesn't really matter. Everything we knew is dead and gone. But if there's more of the squids around, then we've got our hands full of work, you and I."

Subject: a little something

It was progress. Well one could call killing the magically created or summoned or whatever creatures progress as well, but only now the little group had an open route into the building. And it was not guarded. And that got Brandr wary. Whomever it was running the things inside, could not be unaware of the arrival of the "heroes". So the open door into the kitchen smelled like a trap to the ranger, and big time at that.

The huge wilderness warrior waited patiently until Crow had checked the entrance for any hidden means of hindering entry. Fortunately the search was fruitless or successful which ever way one looked at things. They were now "safe" to enter the mansion and save the villagers… if they were still alive that was. The door itself however might become a problem, if nothing was done about it. It might well be that it would close behind Brandr and his friends as they sneaked deeper into the building. And who knows what magics might seal it then… if that was how magic worked.

Shrugging, Brandr move to the doorway. "The tables. Maybe we could move one to keep bar the door open. Just in case." Without further ado, the big man slipped in through the gap between the door and the frame and moved to the door on the north floor. He pressed his ear on the wood, opened his mouth, held his breath and listened. Brandr knew his hearing was not as good as that of the sylvari, but he still wanted to have a go at it himself.

OOC: Should he hear nothing, Brandr will check the tables and ask someone to help him carry it over to the doorway.

Today.

Sorry for the downtime. My little girls have been ill, one with with ear infection and the other with some strange fever thing. Both are fine now and my back (which was giving me hell thu-sun) is now almost as good as it was 10 years ago. But all this is probably TMI anyway.

But one Brandr post coming up!

Praying is not my thing, I'm afraid, but she's (and you as well) the first thing on my mind every time I see the familiar, warm red of the Inn. Thanks for keeping us updated even though it must incredibly hard for you too. I'm glad to hear she'll be getting the meds she needs now.

Hugs to both of you!

Post nearly finished. But I'd like to know one thing. How long has actually passed since the glory days of Gortag and Seluraiiel? Roughly would do, thank you. Centuries? Millenia? I'm not saying Gortag would know exactly, but he might be able make an educated guess from the state of the temple or something.

Very nice posts again Madscirat!

I probably won't be able to post this weekend, but I'll drop in a post on Monday.
In the meanwhile here's a quick picture of Gortag. It's not exactly what I wanted though.
Should've put in some scars and a nastier look on his face. That'll be version two, maybe.

Topic: Monster's Paradise
Subject: In the beginning there was a dwarf...

It was the strangest of feelings even to a dwarf who didn't give much about feelings in the first place. The last thing he remembered was the ugly face of the venerable (by human standards at least) wizard observing closely the workings of his spell. Aldorax the Archmage had been walking around Gortag muttering and nodding to himself in satisfaction. He had been noting down the progress of his arcane powers as the magics ran around the dwarf's half-naked body slowly turning him into a statue. There'd been a flock of lesser spellcasters running around their master doing his biddings and nodding in agreement at every word Aldorax slipped out of his wrinkle-lipped mouth.

Gortag had been disgusted at the sight. He'd always hated boot-lickers, no matter what their race and no matter who their beacon of light was. In his eyes beings who needed someone else to make something - anything even of themselves, were weak. Not everyone had to be a slayer, or a general or a master magician. But everyone, given a little time and putting some effort into it, could become a hero of his or her own life. The lackeys of Master Aldorax had at some point, as very of then seemed to be the case with human sorcerers, lost their fire, their passion for becoming better through work. They now wanted everything and right away, without delay. Gortag the Slayer as they called him, had had his share of people like the ones in the hall right now. He had nothing to really tie him into the current times any more.

Therefore the possibility of a different future that had waited for him ensured by the mighty powers of the greatest mage known to man (and perhaps elf too) had looked just as good as the very day they had been living then. He had felt a bit uneasy by the idea of being turned into stone though. Or like Aldorax had told them, he would not be turning them into solid rock, but rather placing them into a stasis of sorts. The stony skin would simply offer protection against anything time could throw their way. It hadn't convinced Gortag. He didn't trust magic even if he believed in the Archmage's ability to deliver what he promised. Still watching the other few volunteers in the Temple of Eternal Light being "put into stasis" had made shivers run down the stout dwarf's spine. The most powerful warrior of his time had never felt fear when entering mortal combat with any man or monster, but the idea of being trapped inside an indestructible shell for an unknown period of time scared Gortag. His future would no longer be in his own hands.

That was still the view the dwarven warrior held in his mind when the stasis was broken. He was expecting to the see his lordship Master Wizard Aldorax running around the hall looking disappointed since his spell weaving had failed after all. The Temple of Eternal Light would not wait for another time to come when the sleeping heroes would once again be needed. The whole experiment would be a failure. It would make Gortag smile. He liked to see the frustration on a mage's face, when his powers fizzled. It had been the look on the faces of many evil sorcerers - their last.

As the stiffening of the magic gradually let go of Gortag's limbs, the bald, orange bearded and tattooed fighter heard sounds in the room. He expected to see he bright light of the sunny day on which he, Seluraiiel the elven enchanter and a few others had been put under the might of the spell. The dwarf chuckled in his mind for a heartbeat, but then thought better of the situation. He would be stuck once again in a time where there was no use for such as he no more. Together the armies of the goodly races led by their greatest heroes, some of whom had volunteered to take part in Aldorax's plan, had crushed the evil and the monsters of the world… A world that was now safe and in no need for master enchanters or slayers.

But there was something wrong… The sounds… they were not like the talk of wizards or booted feet walking around the tiled floor of the temple. They sounds were too quiet… A shiver of alarm ran through the still stiff dwarf's form. His stony fist gripped the handle of his mighty axe harder and he forced his green eyes open. There was not much too see other than darkness. Then the light of a lamp found its way in to Gortag's gaze and only took another heartbeat for his low light vision to adapt to the situation. Suddenly more forms stood out from the dark background.

It was quite obviou that Gortag was still in the Temple, but so much had changed in the hall built to honor the glory of the alliance that it was hard to recognize it. Everywhere he could see crumbled down statues, pillars and huge lumps of rock. There was no daylight visible and there was a familiar smell of an underground place hanging in the air. The slayer tried to stand as still as possible, but cramps all around his muscles made him flinch. Combat instincts kicked in as Gortag noticed two too familiar forms slide across the uneven floor. Of all the evil creatures he'd faced in what now appeared to be another life in the past, the mind-flayers were probably the ones he hated the most. The way the underground monsters had enslaved whole cities of dwarves or other subterranean races before they had been exterminated… or so everyone had believed. Apparently not all had been destroyed.

More than see, the dwarf could sense a third being moving in the ruined temple, but it didn't seem important now that he was facing two of the hideous Illithids. Getting ready for the fight, Gortag let his gaze wonder around the hall without turning his head. A disappointment rather than sadness filled his heart as he saw many of the heroes of his time lying broken on the ground. There was Palanthinus the human knight without his handsome head. Alianthanus, an elven archer, still held the lower half of his once magnificent bow in his hand which had been broken away from the rest of his body. Of Gnippy, or whatever his real name had been, the gnome illusionist, only the head had remained intact. The rest of the powerful mage was spread around in small pieces.

Gortag could feel the awesome power of the artifact he held in his right hand surge across his body. Whatever rigidness might have been caused by the lifetimes spend in a stony form was gone in an instant. All of the old strength returned into the slayer and he felt revitalized by the magic of the axe. The weapon had been forged of Starmetal, a material from beyond the skies, making it stronger than any other in the world. A god, or the God for the bald dwarf, had poured a tiny bit of his own power into the axe giving it potent powers. In a normal situation, the Slayer would not have worried about any enemy. The mighty axe would ward off a great number of evil magic cast at Gortag. And his incredible battle prowess along with the magical protection provided by the enchanted items around his fingers, neck and arms made certain that he could beat nearly any living or unliving creature out there. However other than his strong mind, the dwarf possessed little to defy the mental powers of the flayers. He had a few tricks under his sleeve, but even the magic woven into his skin through the numerous tattoos on his body, did little to guard him against mental possession.

Gortag knew the monsters could sense his working mind. They would know he was awake even if he remained perfectly unmoving. Therefore there was only one thing he could do. Hoping to distract the Illithids, the Slayer let out a terrible cry and launched himself at the enemy.

Hi there!

I've read through the opening post and liked it a lot. However the only thing I noticed about dwarves was a leg a trologdyte was enjoying. I really hope that wasn't Gortag.

So although I'd happily post, I don't exactly know where Gortag is and what's happening around him.

EDIT: Yeah, well naturally Gortag will be waking up inside the Temple, but would you like us to "create" the place or will you be giving some description to us?

Can't say it's a bad decision. During my 8 or so years at the inn, I've noticed that once a week is the best posting speed. It may and will feel slow at times especially when one is really excited about the game and anxious to move it forward. But like you already mentioned, there's always a possibility for an extra post or two should someone feel like it.

I can't wait to get the game running. This is a concept I've never tried before and I'm really looking forward to playing an epic hero. All I can say is that I'm sure the rest of you will appreciate the fact that Gortag Grimnirsson is not evil. I don't know how many of you read the adventures of Gotrek and Felix in the world of Warhammer RPG, but Gortag will be very much like Gotrek. I can't deny using him as an image of what my character would be like. If you'll google for Gotrek's picture and image him without the mohawk and add a few tattoos, you'll get the idea what Gortag looks like.

Subject: Here we go

Healing magics never ceased to amaze Brandr. One moment he was bleeding to death, the next he was standing on his feet, still hurting, but otherwise ok. The divine powers Peter poured into the northener's body made him tingle inside and he felt like scratching the already closed wounds. With a rare smile, the ranger nodded his thanks to the Warder. As he knelt to better clean his weapons on the red grass, Brandr noticed the bugbears dissolve like the kobolds had a short while earlier. Though he wasn't totally surprised by the disappearance of the bodies for the second time, the mountain of a man caught himself wondering at the fate of creatures.

There was not much to what he knew about magic and for certainty, Brandr had never witnessed arcane power as great as the one at work here at the mansion. Prayers of the priests were another thing altogether and a lot easier for him to accept and understand. The work of sorcerers made him feel, if not frightened then uneasy.

Sheathing his sword, but keeping the axe at hand, the captive of the bugbears caught the barbarian's attention. Despite having just been stuffed inside a sack and the next item on a monstrous menu, the lady was singing and dancing like crazy. And it didn't take anyone long to understand that it was exactly what she was - out of her mind. Shaking his mind in disgust, not at the mad woman herself, but at the evil powers that had most probably made her so, Brandr wondered again about the bugbears.

It was fairly obvious the creatures had been real and not some figment of his and his companions' imagination. There was a lot of his own blood drying on the ground and on his clothes to prove that. But yet, they appeared to be some kind of creations of magic. Still not understanding the nature of the monsters, Brandr wondered if something made totally of magical energies could have a mind of its own. Would such a thing feel hunger, pain, anger… Shaking the blonde-haired head again, the ranger followed his companions to the front of the huge house.

Peter, Derry and Noctus made sure the mad woman got safely outside the dome before getting back to the rest of their group. Brandr felt like saying "I told you so", but the thought disappeared as quickly as it came when they rounded the corner to the last possible entrance into the "king's castle". What awaited the little group surely took them all by surprise: The door was open. It was too easy… way too easy.

The dwarf it'll be then. I already seem to have this image in my mind of him. I'll try not to copy too much of Gotrek Gurnisson into him. The Warhammer hero certainly has tattoos, but there's no magic in them.

Since we're heading towards a storytelling game with great level difference in characters, I guess magical equipment doesn't matter too much either? Do you have some limitations in your mind or shall I simply list any equipment I see fit for you to accept or not?
