Subject: What is this?

The feeling of weariness caused by the difficult ride and the climb suddenly disappeared from Kilgim's muscles and bones as he watched Dapple checking out the entrance to the temple. Be it his pessimism or the long time he'd spent with the lad on their adventures together, but the dwarven priest thought he sensed some uneasiness in Dapple's movements. Therefore when the boy turned around to face the rest of the group and gave his report, the cleric already held the duo of battle axes in his strong hands. And the lad's observations proved Kilgim's fear right. Someone (or something) had places hairs on the portals into the building in order to find out whether someone had entered the place or not. Arien said it aloud before the dwarf had time to, and he said it well: "Why would someone do such a thing?"

They were certainly going to find out soon enough, Kilgim knew. The cleric already had a really bad feeling about what they would face when the door opened. A whole temple didn't go silent just like that, on its own. The heir of the Thedell family gave the order and the bald cleric took his place beside Char. Like always before a possible fight, the dwarf rolled his shoulders and twisted his neck this way and that to loosen some muscles. He then nodded to Arien. "Ready when ye are, lad."

The smell hit him before his deep brown eyes could drink in the view. Death. It was a wonder that the stench had not reached their noses outside the walls. Perhaps there was some magic at work or maybe it was just the well made, tight doors that had held it back. The way the doors opened was strange too. It was as if something very powerful had pulled the open from the inside. Unconsciously Kilgim's left hand, still holding the handle of his axe, reached up to touch the holy symbol of Clangeddin hanging from his neck on top of his silver breast plate. "Gods aid us. What in the name o' the Wyrmslayer 'appened in 'ere?"

Kilgim had thought he'd seen everything by now, but this was beyond anything he'd witnessed before. All the bodies of the priests had been dismembered in a horrible, not-so-clean manner. And what made it even more strange and terrible were the hands... The cut-off hands were holding knives as if there was still life in them. The warrior-priest began muttering prayers to the Lord of the Twin Axes begging for his god to help the poor souls of the dead priests. He knew the prayers came late as the bodies were clearly a few days into the process of decomposition, but there was no harm in trying. After he'd taken a few steps closer, the macabre situation became even more terrifying when the light laughter started ringing around the room…

OOC: Kilgim moves towards the bodies with the Blackaxe in one hand and holy symbol in the other. Casting Detect Evil.

Right. I can see it so clearly now. Kilgim the slim, little dwarf in his silent chain armor hiding in the shadows... his lithe figure perfectly melding into the stone of the wall making him virtually invisible... Yup. I agree. We're dead. Might as well post Kilgim's last wishes tomorrow.

"Hrmph… Hnnggh… Pooh…." It wasn't the first time Kilgim was sorry about something he'd done. But he had certainly never cursed himself for eating a fine meal such as the one the Hevlorn Council had offered him and his companions. But like Flynn had so nicely pointed out, one usually got to sleep a night over before needing to endure a physical exercise like climbing a mountain. This time however there had been no possibility for a proper rest. It was quite obvious the priest had over eaten, which under normal circumstances would not have been a problem. Now… Now, Kilgim found it difficult to get a breath and felt like the last bowl of rosemary potatoes and the goose leg were trying to make their way out… at the wrong end.

Having the bard follow them along was not a problem for Kilgim. Sure, he wasn't too keen on being sung about. The bald, orange-bearded and tattooed dwarf didn't really enjoy attention too much. But with his looks, it was fairly difficult to avoid any when troubadours insisted on making him a part of some tales they liked to sing by the fires of inns and taverns all around. Fortunately it was the likes of Arien that people, especially kids and women, were interested in and a dwarf - Dwan's cousin or not - was often left into the background or even ignored. But still, in every town Kilgim passed through, there usually was one or two kids who recognized the twin axe tattoo on his forehead or the black battle axe hanging from his belt.

Back at the meeting with the Council, the dwarf too had noticed Sunsets strange behavior. He had half expected the little dragon to jump on his shoulder as well, though he new better. For some reason it seemed to prefer Dapple and Char over the others and Kilgim couldn't blame the creature. He wasn't too keen on Sunset himself either. It had been of great help earlier and would no doubt be of use later on as well and that the dwarf could easily appreciate. It was the fact that he didn't quite understand the pseudo-dragon's nature and motives well enough, which kept him wary of it.

Yet others had spoken before the quiet dwarf had a chance to - as they usually did. There had been little else to say about the matter, so Kilgim had kept his mouth shut. The moment of connection between Sunset and Flynn had not gone unnoticed however. It seemed a bit strange that the dragon would befriend a stranger so quickly, but Kilgim had passed the fact with a shrug. What did he know anyway… Maybe they both liked the same type of sausages…

The climb was finally over halfway through the afternoon as the group reached the entrance to the temple. It was very quiet and no sounds carried from the inside either. There was no one in sight which made the situation somewhat eerie. Kilgim caught himself nervously lifting the Black Axe an inch or two from its leather hanger to loosen up the weapon in case he needed to draw it quickly. He had been expecting to see someone waiting for them outside the entrance - if not a welcoming committee, then at least a serf to hold the door open for the knight and his group to enter. But there was no one around and that made the dwarf uneasy. Something was not right. It took a considerable amount of will power for him to stand back and wait for Arien to do the honors of knocking on the door. The young man was their leader of sorts after all.

Hey there lads and lass! I've had some real life issues, but most of them should be goners by now. Work still sucks and the future is a bit unclear, but otherwise the four weeks of holiday have done wonders to me. I feel more relaxed and even happy at times now. So I'm glad the game hasn't died in my absence and I'm hoping to start posting again very soon.

After knocking out the second thrall, Gortag turned to face Seluraiiel to converse their options. Though the elven lady was certainly powerful enough to use her vision without needing to concentrate too much on the effort, the Slayer decided to let her do her thing in peace without interruptions. They'd worked enough together for the dwarf to notice the slight changes on the beautiful face as the sorceress was looking somewhere where his own green eyes could not see. Gortag could wait. After all, that's what the two of them had been doing for more than a few lifetimes it seemed.

True enough. A few heartbeats later Seluraiiel's gaze locked with Gortags and there was a slight smile on the immortal lips as she turned her attention to the slave she'd already freed from the grasp of the mind flayers. In no time the human started moving again though not freely, but under the control of a new master… or mistress. Gortag cast a look at his companion and could see a wrinkle on her brow. It was clearly painful for the lady to use another being so; especially when the controlled one was not an evil creature, but an innocent one instead.

Right now, however, the Slayer knew there was little else she could do. Gortag himself wouldn't have wasted a second thought for the fate of the human thrall, but yet he respected the decision of his companion. Seluraiiel would try to save the man if it was at all possible and to that the dwarf had no objections. Alone, the two of them could probably do a great deal of damage to the monsters running freely above the ground as well as under it, but it would not be enough. They would need a resistance working in the shadows until there was an army strong enough to take on the enemy out in the open. And even if one man was not much, it was still a start.

Therefore Gortag nodded to his friend when Seluraiiel suggested leaving without a fight through the hidden waterway they both knew had been running underneath the temple all those years ago. "Aye. As much as I'd like to strike down the damn squids running the slaving enterprise in here, I agree. That'll have to wait for now. The bastards will get to taste the blade of my axe later."

The tattooed warrior rolled his shoulders, stretched his neck and cast a final look at the unconscious human lying on the temple floor. No, the man would not be showing his master anything for a while. The Slayer could only hope the tentaclehead would get to share the heavy headache its thrall would be having when he woke up. Shaking his head sadly at the destruction of the once beautiful temple, the dwarf turned his back at the ruined building and followed the fairy sorceress into the darkness.

I guess I could drop in a post about the second exit, but Gortag isn't really aware of Seluriiael's vision so he doesn't know of the approaching enemies. Then again it's not exactly hard to imagine that the Mind Flayer's would send in more people.

I'll see if I can post tomorrow.

Before Seluraiiel had a chance to respond to Gortag's suggestion, the dwarf sent a look of warning her way. The dwarven defender was not certain how much the elven sorceress was able to read of his thoughts with her immense telepathic powers. He was aware enough of his own mental strength to know he could definitely resist any feeble attempt of controlling his mind. The fairy's skill was beyond anything Gortag had met however. She might be able to hide her attempts to capture his thoughts so that he would be totally unaware of it. Then again she might not.

More than a couple of vampires and mind flayers had attempted to turn the Slayer into a mindless slave during the War. None had succeeded, not even Count Nikolai. Gortag had felt the bloodsucker's telepathic attacks trying to wrest the control of his body and mind from himself, but he had been able to force the vampire out. What the dwarf was not sure about, was whether it had been his own power that had blocked the attacks or the Axe. There was a fraction of Moradin's power in the artifact, but enough to probably make it the most potent weapon in the world… At least the world they'd known.

Whatever had entered the temple just now was certainly not a tentacle-head. The Illithid did not make much sound when they moved and though Gortag's hearing was very good for a dwarf, he was not an elf. He would not have heard one of the squids approaching. Then again, the bald warrior wasn't sure he'd exactly heard this one either. It was just a feeling. He simply felt something or someone fairly clumsy had come. The lass is having an effect on me already. It's more her job to feel and know the unseen than mine. Gortag chuckled silently in his mind and turned to face the direction he knew the newcomer to be at.

Generally dwarves aren't too swift in their moves. Sure an experienced warrior of the stout folk could certainly swing his axe faster than an eye could see, but running or leaping wasn't really their business. Gortag however, was made of different stuff than any other dwarf. Moradin's Axe gave him powers beyond those a "regular" dwarf could ever hope to achieve. So now, as he slightly bent his knees and launched himself into a charge, not many a creature could have matched his speed - certainly no other dwarf could have. It took the Slayer half a heartbeat to reach the new enemy and all of his strength to stay his hand from striking down another human thrall.

Lowering his weapon, Gortag looked deep into the slave's eyes. There was little sense left in the empty gaze of the human. He snorted in disgust and pointed his thick fore finger at the thrall's nose. "Tell your master I'm coming for it. And when I find it, I will feed its ugly tentacles to it one by one." Having finished his threat, Gortag raised his muscular left hand and punched the lights out of the thrall. He didn't know if the mind flayer controlling the human could hear him or not, or if his threat had reached it. But he did know they could see through the eyes of their thralls. That's why the squid had sent another mindless creature down - to gain a view at whatever it was that had killed two of its kin.

Subject: Kill them all.. again!

"Heeey! Don't give me that look, Nik. Remember the last time we met and you ran away? I did tell you I would come for you, didn't I? And I did promise I would kill you." A human general, Warlord Malcissus, was standing a few feet away from the half-naked Gortag and shook his head in disbelief. He'd heard numerous stories about the dwarf slayers and their battle prowess. And he'd been told some of them had been driven insane by the constant fighting and killing. But this was the first battle the huge soldier had ever fought beside one of the small group of dwarves elite.

It had been a long and gruesome battle in which the victory had not come cheap. The side of the good had taken terrible casualties and now only a mere tenth of their original number of one thousand warriors was still standing. And of the survivors only perhaps a couple of dozen were still uninjured. To the general's surprise, it appeared that Gortag the Slayer was one of them. The stout dwarven body was covered in blood and dirt, but if any of it was his, nothing in the bald fighter's behavior let it show. And Gortag had probably cut down more than a third of the enemy's army single-handedly, including their leader Count Nikolai. Lord Malcissus shook his head again. It was no wonder that the dwarf seemed more than a bit weird…

Removing his heavy, adamantine helmet, Malcissus took a look around on the battlefield and noticed he wasn't the only one wondering about what Gortag was doing. Slowly he turned his steely gaze back towards the Slayer. The dwarf held his huge two-handed battle-ax in his right hand as lightly as someone might he holding a stick even though the mighty weapon probably weighed more than a halfling would. In his other hand was some hair and the jet black ponytail was connected to a once handsome head. Equally black substance was dripping from the severed head and its red eyes were staring blindly into the eternity.

"Now what was that crap "You can't kill me. I'm already dead" all about? Did you come up with that yourself? I hope you didn't go about preaching that to your thralls letting them believe vampires are immortal. Just look around you, Nik. How many of your children do you still see walking about, eh?" Gortag shrugged and threw the head of the vampire lord in to a nearby pyre. "Oh well, always thought you blood-suckers were too easy to kill anyway. Regeneration doesn't help much when you've got no head left, now does it?" The dwarf aimed the last question at the black-armored human beside him, but clearly did not expect an answer and continued: "You know, Malc. This was a good day… or night, if you prefer."

The human warlord looked at the dwarf with doubt filled eyes. "What the hell are you talking about, Slayer? We lost nearly a thousand noble warriors to a handful of vampires today. In what way is that a good thing?" General Malcissus snorted in disgust for Gortag's comment. The dwarf nodded in answer and looked across the sea of bodies in which numerous bonfires more than twenty feet high each were making the scene almost as bright as daylight would have. The remaining few still in good enough shape were carrying bodies into the fires. They made no difference between vampires or humans or dwarfs. They could not risk any of the slain to rise again as blood leeching monsters.

Malcissus could see a hint of sadness in the muscular, tattooed dwarf's eyes as Gortag turned back to face him. "True. Things did not go as planned. Nikolai was far more powerful than we had thought. Even our sorcerers had no idea the night was extended by magic and would not die with the sun coming up. Assaulting the nest with the sun cowering our backs would've been better for sure. But the men knew the risk and they were willing to take it. And they died to make the world a better place. Even still, it was a good day. The mightiest of the vampire lords will not breed anymore."

…………..

Gortag forced himself out of the vision from the past. It had not been the only speech he'd given in the previous life, though probably the longest one. The Slayer was not a speaker. He didn't have the way with fancy or encouraging words. He was a killer, to heart and bone. Though he wasn't quite certain he still had a heart - other than a one of stone. It had been a good day. When Count Nikolai's luck had turned, so had the tide of the battle between good and evil. It had been the day with the promise of better times for the beings of good.

At about then, his elven companion came out of her own trance and turned to face Gortag. The look on the beautiful face was grave. It was obvious that she had witnessed something horrible while looking into the human thrall's mind. There was an edge, a steely ring to Seluraiiel's words as she spoke. It was something the dwarf had never noticed in her singing voice before. A few mysterious words of magic flowed from her lips as the elven enchantress locked her gaze with the dwarf's. Gortag felt no effect in his body and the mighty axe in his hand didn't report any evil magics trying to work their way through its defense. Not that he would've expected any. Right now, the two of them had no one else to rely upon. There were no friends or allies to come to their assistance other than themselves. Therefore the distrusting Slayer would give his life into Seluraiiel's hands if needed.

"Be thankful that you have not seen what has just been shown to me," Seluraiiel began speaking not in the common tongue but rather in an ancient long dead dialect of elvish. "This world is swallowed wholly by the dark. Drow, ilithids, duegar and all there ilk have reclaimed their subterranean kingdom. They walk side by side in a massive city far larger than any I have ever seen. The horror does not end with their return, it only grows for they have enslaved the races of man and dwarf in body, mind, and soul." "We cannot allow this to continue and I think our human friend might hold a piece of the key. He is no mindless thrall."

Gortag stood still and silent for a few heartbeats letting the information sink in. Even if describing the situation hopeless would be an understatement, the Slayer did not feel so. He had already accepted the fact that everyone he had ever known was long gone and would not be coming back. It was another life of another dwarf. He and her were here now. That was all that mattered. And it was easy to agree with the elven lady. What she had seen could not be allowed to continue as long as the two of them had anything to say about the matter. The orange bearded warrior nodded his tattooed head a couple of times and grunted in reply. "Yes. We need to turn this world upside down… Again."

Looking at the fragile human standing beside the sorceress and then at the hole in the rock through which he and his masters had entered the temple, Gortag nodded again deep in thought. "Aye. We need to set the humans and the dwarves and the elves free again even if it will be damn hard. However I'm sure more of the leeches will be heading our way very soon, so we'd better get moving. And even if I'd like nothing more than to kill all of the monsters on the way, we may need to hide for a while… and observe and plan. It's something I've never been good at, but I need to learn quick now, won't I?"

A nasty grin appeared on the Slayer's face. "But let's make sure we leave a sign for all the nasties out there. A warning of a kind. Just enough to install a spark of fear into the corrupted hearts of theirs. That's all."

"What day did ye say it was? Are ye pullin' me leg? Ye do know it's deadly dangerous to piss off a dwarf, don't ye?" Kilgim sent another evil glare at the farmer's way and turned away not really waiting for or expecting an answer. If what the old man was saying was the truth - the real truth and not some imaginary thing he thought was true - then magics beyond the priest's understanding were at work.

There wasn't much these days that surprised the orange-bearded dwarf. He'd been around sorcerers and other spell-weavers long enough to get some kind of a grasp of what mighty magics could do. He'd witnessed people brought back to life with the power of gods channeled through a fellow priest's body and mind. He'd seen the archmage Gwanele destroy and build huge walls of stone with a few words of power. But not once had he heard of anyone moving back or forth in time, the way they apparently just had.

And not only that, if only indeed was a was a word one could use here, they had been moved to a completely different location at the same time. Teleporting, as the mages called it, Kilgim was familiar with even if not too keen on experiencing himself. But either what they'd just experienced had been some incredibly powerful illusion or dream somehow strangely shared by them all, or they had in fact traveled back in time. Kilgim shrugged his muscular shoulders and looked at his companions who obviously were sharing his thoughts.

After Arien had paid the farmer and the heroes got back on the way towards Hevlorn, Kilgim rode Grumpy beside the paladin. The look on his dear friend's face made the dwarf's heart skip a beat. He could read the shame on Arien's expression. Shame for engaging the daemons so foolishly. But that was a decision they'd all made. The shame was not Arien's alone to bear. Kilgim could only wonder if their previous successes and clear increase in power and skill had made their little group arrogant. Had they charged into combat overconfident and certain of their victory. Perhaps their deaths would've been the righteous outcome of the battle after all. Whatever the case, the stout warrior still preferred the way things had apparently gone over what the they'd all experienced.

Kilgim cleared his throat and waited for Arien to turn towards him. "Worry ye not, laddie. We're still alive'n that's what counts. 'n what's better, we may still 'ave a chance to 'elp the villagers. Me thinks yer right. Let's talk with 'em priests'n see if they've got any ideas to offer. There must be some reason fer their cowardly behavior. Me doesn't think they'd leave them poor villagers to face the bloody daemons alone without a fairly good reason."

When they finally reached Hevlorn again or actually for the first time, the place was totally different from what they'd seen in the dream. The town was full of life. People were walking and talking on the streets and everything seemed to be the way it should. Kilgim caught himself sighing in relief and not only for the sake of the locals, but for himself and his companions as well. Maybe, just maybe the dream had been a vision of a possible future, not the future.

It was not difficult to find the town hall. The building was too big to miss and there was a throng of people blocking the entrance. It was easy to see from the quiet and calm way the townspeople were standing outside the town hall that there was no imminent danger threatening their wellbeing. A gap appeared into the crowd as Arien led his team forward and then they were facing the leaders of Hevlorn no doubt… And a bard, like Maximus so nicely pointed out. The man was not known to Kilgim, but then again that was little surprise since he'd never been a great fan of human music or entertainment. It was too light and happy to his liking… A bard. What else?
