Hiya,

Been absent from the site (again, I know) for a week or more due to renovation work at our home. We've completely torn down our bathroom and sauna and are now slowly building it up again. While I'm not personally really doing much, but instead have a hired builder doing the work, it still means I don't have my home internet connection available.

Currently our family is staying at my mother-in-law's (yay!) and will be there for another week or two. While she does have an internet connection available, it sucks big time. The connection gets cut off all the time and is really s l o w. But I'll try read in during the work hours when ever possible.

Me 'ead! Me 'ead! Kilgim found himself on all fours on the ground. But the ground wasn't the road passing through the town, but a field... a field with corn crops growing where the sweating dwarf and his companions hadn't yet destroyed it. Just to make sure, Kilgim leaned back, sat on his feet and raised his grimy hands to touch the sides of his head only to find it still where it was supposed to be. Char?... Max?... Adrien? The fates of his friends filled the thoughts of the bald priest as he pushed himself up. He could feel the exhaustion in his muscles as he'd really been fighting for his life only a couple of heartbeats earlier.

"Me knew it coulnd'a been real. Me just knew it...", he whispered to no one in particular as his green eyes took in the forms and conditions of the others. "... but it was so real..." They were all there. All in good shape, unhurt and certainly not dead. But the whole party was more or less shaken after the dream. If 'at was wha' it was. Kilgim leaned on his legs, took a few deep breaths and then stretched his back to push away the weariness from his body. Kilgim walked to others with a pat on Dapple's shoulder, a smile to Char and Arien and a nod to Maximus and Adrien on the way.

"Lads, did ye all see the same thin'? The brothers 'n the town 'n all? Ye see me loose me 'ead?" After the confirmation from the others, the cleric shook his head in disbelief. He'd heard of some illusions effecting a large number of people before. But so many sharing the same dream? Magic was at work here, that much was for certain. Powerful magic... Kilgim could only hope, that the power behind the magic was not as lethal as the brothers in the vision. They'd been something very much beyond the abilities of Kilgim and his friends. He had doubt whether even Dwan or Gwanele could've done any better. Then again it had been a dream, effectively an illusion. And as far as the priest's knowledge of such matters came, illusions tended to go a bit over the edge at times. But it was so real...

So when did the dream begin? Were even the people runnin' from the terrors real? Is this field of crops real? Kilgim watched in silence as Arien paid the farmer for the damage they'd done... Paid generously he might add. Probably a year's worth. Not that it mattered to the dwarf. He would've done the same. He'd lost the yearning for earthly treasures decades ago. Dwan provided him with all the necessities he needed and more. Gold was nice to have, but didn't really matter. Really... funny word that... makes me wonder what's real 'n what's not... It was so real... I must pray for the Lord of Battle's divination on the dream tonite. Maybe e'll be generous enough t'shed some light on it.

Did I just see Alacrity posting something about picking up the 4th? To boldly go where no old school DM has gone before...

Actually bought the 4th Ed. Player's Handbook myself a couple of months back, but haven't been interested enough to even read it through. After a quick look here and a quick look there, it actually doesn't seem to be as bad as I initially thought. Sure seems better in some aspects than the previous two editions. Still you can't beat the good ole 2nd Ed, not to mention the golden 1st one.

But yes, 2nd edition may be too much for some of the younger generation. It just isn't too logical and easy to adapt at times. And it too certainly has some flaws, but I think Alacrity has overcome those nicely and anyway rules don't matter that much in here.

Whoops. Went off-topic pretty well there. Soz. As for the quiet part.. Yup. Been there a number of times myself and very much so of late. Bad arm... Lovely, but very active and wants a lot of attention especially from dad who's at work all day... World's worst ISP, which I cannot change... You know, the basic excuses for not being around the Bestest RPG site there is.

But I agree with Alacrity. We need to bring the hot tub back. So get that lovely wife of yours back online.

Char? Dead? Kilgim risked (not that there seemed to be any risk as the ugly brother appeared to ignore him at the moment) a look at where his friend was standing only a heartbeat earlier and only saw pile of charred remains. "No..." All o' this seems unreal... Gimme dragons or demons with pointy tales... But these two 'ave the power o'divine beings. We're no match t' 'em. Though not one to give up easily, doubt stared to crawl into Kilgim's heart...

As he turned back to face the monstrous being, another strange thing caught the priests eye. Arien and Winston were rising off the ground and the stallion had wings. "What in t' name o' Clanggedin is goin' on in 'ere?" "That 'orse ain't a pegasus fer sure" This ain't fer real!" The bald dwarf launched himself into another fray of attacks easily hitting the slowly moving mountain of a man with each strike... to no avail. The wounds healed as fast as if there'd been a small army of healers doing their magic to them.

Seeing that Maximus was in serious trouble and his axes were having no effect, Kilgim thought of another approach and circled around the enemy began calling upon the powers of his god. With the ugly face well in sight, the cleric finished the last syllables of the prayer to summon and cast an ever-lasting light at the demon's eyes. Maybe ye'll stumble on yer feet and 'it yer 'ead as ye fall

Hello dear friends, (especially Boss, fellow staff members and everyone on CWWLLO and Cerebral Paradox)

I know I posted last week that my arm was getting better - and honestly that's how it felt - but now it's fairly obivious that my Lateral Epicondylitis (tennis elbow for those clueless about medical term like myself) has indeed only gotten a bit worse. It's nothing serious, so no worries. It'll heal if only I manage to refrain from using it.

But now that it got worse (didn't let the arm rest and didn't use the antibiotic gel often enough), the Doc has insisted on me to wear a splint or brace if you will. Great. Typing really sucks now (shouldn't be doing it btw) as the brace keeps on accidentally pressing down the spacebar when not supposed to.

SO next week? Maybe? Damned I hate mice... the electronic kind. Gladly got one of the ernomical mice from mousetrapper.com now at work. (as bad to use with the splint than a real one) Should help in the future.

So once again. Sorry for not being around!

Kilgim listened to the description Char and Dapple gave with sadness and anger in his eyes. What kind of creatures were these two men? If men they were. Who could devastate a town killing everyone in their path and then talk about it afterwards in such a casual manner? For a moment the dwarf felt like he was in the war again. And war was probably exactly what it had felt like for the people in the town as well when the terrible duo had begun to tear it down. War... War never changes...

Kilgim resisted the urge to vent his anger. He wanted to scream and shout and to let his feelings show. There were times when the priest could remain impassive and apparently without feeling, but in the face of such slaughter he didn't want to. Kilgim Blackaxe wanted revenge, he wanted to kill. There would be no mercy for the creatures that had laid waste to the town... The possibility of him and his group not being powerful enough to take the enemy down did not even cross his mind as Kilgim summoned forth the power of Clangeddin and cast a protection spell on Arien. "Ye'll 'ave some protection against lightnin' now lad, but it won't last fer lon'"

When they finally laid eyes on the doom of Hevlorn, Kilgim could not hold back a feeling of awe. He shook it away in disgust immediately, but still he had to wonder about the power of the duo. They surely looked like something out of this world with their nearly gigantic proportions and strange appearances. Of course the world held its own secrets and not every horrible and impossible seeming creature had crawled out of the Abyss. These... Kilgim couldn't tell. He only knew they had to be stopped and the ones to stop them had just arrived to Hevlorn.

Neither of the enemy appeared to be wounded or injured in anyway. And to Kilgim that meant one of two possibilities. Either the townsmen had been too terrified or taken by complete surprise to put up a fight or the huge men had some kind of magic protecting them. No matter how good someone was in the art of combat, it was very close to impossible to stay unscathed when facing dozens of opponents simultaneously. And in the case of a magical protection, such a thing could prove to be very dangerous to Kilgim and his friends.

But even if the appearance of the two strange warriors took Kilgim by surprise, what they said next was even a greater surprise. Apparently they knew who Arien and his group were. An' somehow t' bastards know o'what we've done too. What t'hell's goin' on in 'ere?" The dwarf spat on the ground, rolled his shoulders and prepared to attack. Well me don't give a damn 'bout what it means... His thought was cut off by the words of the handsome one:

Aye…my brother. I have…all their…action figures…at home. If we…slay them,...there…will be much…glory and…fame…for us.”

Action figures? What in Clangeddin's name is 'e babblin' 'bout? Me'll show ye some glory'n fame, ye bastard! Before he could come up with a plan, Kilgim saw Maximux charging towards the beastman. "Maximus, you fool! Wait fer me!" The cleric jumped off the back of Grumpy, brandished his axes ran after Maximus as fast as his short legs would let him.

My arm is still in recovery mode and I really shouldn't be typing or using the mouse yet. But thanks for moving Guardian forward Brom. Would've pretty much said the same thing myself. The only thing the bodyguard is worried about is actually getting paid, but he doesn't see they really had a choice. The unknown corp might decide to get rid of them at any point - before or after the mission.

Hopefully I'm back on track soon, but can't give any promises.

Hey Lance and guys,

I'll have to skip posting for a while. Hopefully not longer than a week or so. (I'm due anyway) Reason this time? My right arm. I've got a tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis if you like. So my arm and especially elbow area are hurting like hell and the only way to really fix the situation is rest. I'm not really allowed to type or use a mouse at the moment, so I'll keep this short.

Hopefully I'll be back sooner than next week.

Sorry again for the delay.

Guardian followed Frankie and the suit into the stairwell. He'd noticed the other suit wasn't going to come with them immediately and took the only possible position where he could protect DS from both directions. Of course he couldn't be totally aware of both suits all the time, so he had to settle with putting his large frame between a possible threat and his client in order to give even some sort of protection.

The bodyguard wasn't happy with the situation, but it seemed like the only way out of the problem they were getting into pretty fast. Of course the solution might still (and probably would) to another situation where the life of his employer would be very much under threat. Casting looks at both of the strangers, Guardian quickly settled on the fact that the one behind him was not going to draw and fire at them. He'd already had plenty of time for that.

Perhaps the one that stayed behind was going to create a diversion, perhaps not. All the big man could now do was follow DS and the suit with a working mouth to the stairs. He would've taken the offer as well, for even if it had been an ambush it still would've meant taking on an unknown party instead of the Mallplex Sec. Always a better option for Frank liked to visit the Plex every now and then, and that could be pretty hard after having gunned down a couple of its guards.

As he stepped through the doorway and out of site of the security (though most probably not CCTV), Guardian silently drew his Armalite hiding it immediately inside his flowing jacket. Whatever the suit had in mind, he wasn't going to take it on without being prepared. It was immediately apparent, that if the suit was going to flatline them, it wouldn't happen in the staircase for the man quietly followed Scribe to the exit... Which was naturally locked. Would've been too easy, wouldn't it?, Guardian thought with his eyes still on the suit.

The story they were fed sounded a bit too obvious, but perhaps it was so obviously made up that it was actually true. But the truth was that there was no way of knowing and that there wasn't enough time to find out there and then either. Basically DS and him had only two choices: either they killed the suit and tried to escape the Plex Sec on their own, or they listened to what the man had to say and accepted his offer to help them out of the dead end.

Guardian shrugged slightly to Frankie's question while still looking at the suit. "It's not as if we've really got a choice, is it? Isn't it like they say - An enemy of my enemy is my friend? Not that we really have an enemy and not that I'd ever call any Corp a friend."

Kilgim sat on the back of his trusted Grumpy and watched the scenes slowly pass by. Even after such a long time together, he still felt somewhat uneasy riding the nasty spirited pony. More out of habit than need the dwarf wiped his bald, tattooed head with his left hand and chuckled to himself. He could still remember it like yesterday, when Terrin had first given him the reins.

It had definitely been love at first sight... Not. The animal had shared his look of disgust and it had all but refused to let Kilgim ride itself. It had taken the elven lass Terasyn quite a bit of persuasion to make Grumpy accept the stout cleric as its rider. But in the end she had somehow been able to convince the animal with an interesting personality, that cooperation would be the better option...

The thought of Terasyn made Kilgim a bit sad. Though it probably had been the foolish actions of the lassie herself that finally got her killed, it had nevertheless been an unselfish or even self-sacrificial act to save an innocent child from the fearsome group of wolves. The dwarf had to admit to himself that he missed the elven girl. They hadn't known each other too well or for very long for that matter, but he had certainly started to consider Terasyn a friend. Her loss had been a terrible setback early in their first assignment together, but they'd pulled through thanks to Char and his sudden appearance on the scene. Kilgim himself had been injured fairly badly as had Shona - a female gladiator now gone from Freegate and probably for good.

"Whoaaah!" Grumpy had apparently noticed that Kilgim no longer was concentrating on the whole riding business and decided to bring the dwarf out of his daydreaming by kicking its hind legs up in the air. It took all of the warrior priests skill and reflexes in addition to a fair deal of good luck to hang on and not fall down on the ground. Kilgim puffed out another lungful of air through his clenched teeth and the braids of his orange beard flapped around as the dwarf fought to stay in the saddle. "Knock it off Grumpy or I'll feed you to Maximus!"

Maximus... The gladiator's name had come out automatically. Kilgim had used the same threat a few times before (usually in vain) in similar situations. But the huge warrior was no longer with them and it was a big loss. The group lacked a large part of their martial power in the coming confrontations, but they - Kilgim included - were once again missing a friend as well.

Kilgim had mixed feelings about what had happened on the previous day. He had learned to value Maximus as a friend and as an accomplished warrior, and the priest knew the big man had difficulties controlling his temper whenever his pride was threatened. And frankly, Kilgim couldn't really blame the gladiator for his reaction. Had he been the target of the mage's tricks himself, Matthias would have found himself in even more trouble.

Kilgim had nothing against magic-users as such. There were conjurers he liked and those he didn't. The Art itself rarely turned people bad or made them behave in some irrational way. But sometimes magical powers turned susceptible people into power hungry monsters that considered themselves superior to all others. Hence Kilgim believed that magical powers should only be given to mortals by deities when needed. Magic was too powerful a thing for a mortal to handle - let alone control.

Fortunately there were exceptions to his rule. People like Gwanele. The archmage probably held more power within herself than the dwarf was able to understand, but still somehow managed to stay in control. And there was no fooling himself. Kilgim had to admit that on numerous occasions his life had been saved by sorcery. Therefore he held no passion towards magic, neither negative nor positive. It was a necessary evil he would have to accept.

The days passed on slowly, but the group made good progress. Sad thoughts of old friends now gone had disappeared from Kilgim's mind and even Grumpy seemed to enjoy being on the road again. Of course the pony thought the thunder and lightning on the fourth evening was the dwarf's fault and it let it show too. The angry whinnying and glaring would have made a lesser man wet his pants, but the stout cleric simply stared back and once again threatened to hang Grumpy over a fire... To no avail.

Come next midday they started to meet groups of women and children fleeing a nearby town of Hevlorn. They were running for their lives having left their homes and husbands behind. It didn't necessarily have anything to do with the mission Kilgim and his friends were on, but it was something Arien or himself couldn't leave be. Their assignment surely needed their attention, but this latest turn of events was more important now. Lives of people were in peril and they were the only ones anywhere near that could come to aid.

Guardian was going on through their options in his mind, when Scribe's hushed voice brought him out of it. "Guardian", DS whispered. "Security. Behind us." Had the bodyguard had a habit of cursing, now would've been a perfect moment for it. But more often than not swearing was pretty much useless. It fulfilled no purpose and did not undo something that already gone wrong. Therefore, instead of breathing out something that should be censored, the big black man began re-evaluating their situation, at double speed.

Going through the setup at lightning speed, Guardian saw three possible ways out of the situation. Since the Security was rolling through the garage at a very slow speed, it was clear to him they were looking for something or someone. Most probably us... or if were lucky, the tails. That pretty much ruled hiding out. It was the Sec's turf and finding someone hidden amongst the cars was their job. For a mountain of muscle in a long black coat trying to avoid the guards' professional eyes would simply make him look like a fool, to no avail. Nah. Wouldn't work.

So Frank would have to make his choice and make it quick. There would be no time to consult his client, but that didn't matter. Guardian was after all the bodyguard of the two. It was his job to keep the man with the money alive. Not the other way around. Yet he wasn't a complete idiot. Should a situation handle something the client was an expert in, it would be complete waste of common sense, not to include him or her in the decision making. However such was not the case right now. Frankie Tordesky was not a pro in handling multiple armed threats in a blink of an eye - enhanced or not. Sure they were probably being shot by a CCTV at the very moment and Scribe could've told bodyguard how to position himself in order to look as good as possible. But that wouldn't really help now...

First option, in Guardian's mind, (and it did seem quite appealing) would be taking the tails by surprise and dropping them dead there and then. The men were careful and certainly ready to act in a split second, but Frank was no newbie to gunfights. We would be able to kill one and at the least injure the other before they'd have a chance to shoot back. But that would mean starting a blaze of glory at the Mallplex - one of the most important public places in the whole of Night City. It would be simply stupid. Yeah, they'd get their faces on NCTV in prime time with plenty of replays, but that would pretty much take Guardian out of business... Should he survive the next night - let alone the day.

No, there would have to be a better option to pick. One such that came to his mind was "surrendering" to the security officers - coming up with a quick white lie as to why the two of them were down there without the required credentials. But that would hardly work either. Guardian and DigitalScribe didn't exactly look like an elderly couple from a nearby town lost while looking for a souvenir shop. The security wouldn't buy it. But it might still be a way to get them out of the sight of the duo following them. They hadn't exactly done anything that would get them in any serious trouble with the Plex's officials anyway.

Last, but not least or maybe it was just that - the least good of the options Guardian thought they had. He'd never been too good in trying to fool anyone - bluffing wasn't really his thing. But the third option did call for a bluff of sorts. What Frank had in mind really called for nerves or balls of steel. Should it succeed, they would walk out in one piece and without an exchange of bullets. Should it not... Well, such was life living on the edge. You win some until you lose. After that nothing really matters.

"Scribe. Here's what we'll do. On three, we stand up and walk slowly at a regular pace towards the stairwell as if we belonged here.", the big man whispered. "That'll leave the tails two options: either they'll let us pass or not. If not, move behind me and give them hell." He would much rather have entered a close quarters situation with his sword drawn out. But of course that would leave no possibility for everyone to survive the encounter. No one walked with a Kendachi in hand without an intention to kill someone. No one. Therefore Guardian would only have rely on his sense of combat, the Sandevistan speedware and the Smartgun linked .44.

"One... two... three.", as the last "e" died out, Guardian stood up like anyone who'd dropped his keys or something. He wasn't rushing or moving too slow and controlled either. The movement of the bodyguard was casual, almost relaxed. He didn't look around other than turned his head toward DS and nodded a couple of times as if replying to something the other man had said, and then started walking towards the fire escape. It would only be natural for anyone to take a look at a person passing him by and therefore Guardian's eyes were locked into the tails as he moved.
