A solitary figure atop the rocks of the promontory, she watched distractedly as the fishing fleet returned for the night through the protective gates of the harbor. She watched them pass beneath her feet while she looked down the rough grey face of the cliff, as if looking down from the brow of one of the Town Elders. The cracks, gullies, and runnels on the cliff were much the same, and for much the same reason, as the deep lines of the faces of the Elders, caused by their time weathering the wind and water from the sea. She would not leave her chosen vantage point on this vigilant countenance until the last ship had passed. however long that may keep her here.

Farther out, a distance beyond the final fisher, another ship was sailing in the direction of the harbor. Even at this distance, the barely-distinguishable colors of the flags on the main-mast identified the ship and a number other details. The ship was one belonging to her ramily's fleet, that something important had transpired on-ship, and that it was in a hurry. Any further details would have to wait until the ship came closer, or if it became too dark, until the ship docked. She waited only for the former, to be able to tell her parents what she saw as soon as she could. The latter would defeat her self-imposed purpose and gain her the unpleasant reprisal from her parents for disobeying them yet again.

Re-cogitating on the matter at hand has me wondering if, in fact, we are alter-egos of the same intelligence-in-denial (Grugg/Utan), or individual entities/persons of like mind (Grugg and/or Utan). Kinda scary, either way.

Kinda gives the brain something to gnaw on, eh, Grugg?

Not certain, but interesting ...

Mine is one just recently "adopted". Own? Not hardly. About as much as a human owns a cat, or wins an argument with a parrot. What sparked my concern for his welfare was his initial reaction to me; one of uncertain hostility, which I hope to train out of him, hopefully without changing it into a directed, focused hostility.

Not certain what it is exactly, but it answers to Grugg ...

He was a giant man...one who need only cast a glance to intimidate.

Yet, there he lay in all his mishappen glory, silent, motionless. His facial features contorted by the torture his body had endured.

Tired of fighting the good fight, the lifeforce which had sustained him through many a battle was now eagerly awaiting the sweet solace of death.

---- aaaaaannnd, my version --------------

Standing, his appearance could be described in one word - huge. His ability to quash resistance or discussion with but a quick and meaningful look was well-known. But a giant is no longer a giant when he cannot stand. He is as pitiful as any other being.

Once formidable, he now lay broken -- of will and of person -- with the full horrors of his breaking etched into the lines of his face for any and all to see. Quiet, unmoving and, yes, pitiful, he still retained a kind of tacit greatness about him, as if it were a thin, invisible aura.

A product of what he was, and just as much a product of what he had refused to become, there was a focus within the shattered body that had reached it's limit to renew, to attract the energies or abilities necessary to rebuild tissue and mend the framework so damaged by this last encounter. It was this same focus that instilled a feeling of peace and acceptance, rather than trepidation or outright fear, of his impending demise.
