" ... I would like to meet at the Northern Gate. Please be prepared, since we’ll be sleeping in the rough for much of this, and conditions are going to be harsh. Though…” Looking straight at Arianna, he winked. “Maybe you could help gear them up?” With a booming laugh that echoed in their minds, the burly fellow rushed off down the cobbled streets, ..."

Moto shook his head and sighed as he watched the big man dash down the street. Humans were prone to celebrate at the drop of a hat. The man seemed to be extraordinarily happy that he had been able to recruit aid to his cause. In Moto's eyes, he should be more serious about it, for this rescue they were about to attempt was serious business, indeed.

But celebration, in the eye of the celebrant, was a subjective thing. It was not Moto's place to judge. It was his place to defend and fight for a cause, whether his own or one that he assumes in the guise of helping another. Thie he would do, without doubt or qualm.

[[ Waits for reply to Gunther's statement from Arianna ]]

"Madam Arianna, Gunther has given quiet praise for your knowledge, in that he feels you could help us prepare for the task ahead. I respect both the praise and the knowledge, and I mean no disrespect to you or your skills, but I will let Atlam the Mighty guide my hands and feet to make the necessary choices I require. I will meet all of you at the North Gate in an hour."

He heads off in the direction of the Market Street, a jaunty swagger to his step as he shoulders his waraxe, whistling as he went. Whether the ditty he was whistling was sorely out-of-tune or it was just random notes to satisfy Moto's mood was unclear, but gradually it faded with distance ...

Gorshak smiled at Drassar's assessment of the situation, but he wasn't sure that splitting the party into two groups was a wise idea. It had backfired on them before. He kept silent on that issue. But Drassar tracking the escaped villain to the area where he had disappeared so that Gorshak could examine the rock face for evidence of a stone door, or one that was made to look like stone, was indeed a "pooling" of knowledge and resources.

He hadn't realy thought about the lack of light after his initial self-condemnation for forgetting torches. But the human mage reminded him that some did not have his gift of darkvision. And the additional light that he had provided would add depth and detail to their search. So, it was coming together nicely, albeit late.

"Thank you, Gamiates. Good lad! Opportune and helpful that light will be! So! Well now, Drassar-laddy, Let's get to it, eh? Your tracking, my detecting, and Mister Gamiates as our torch puts us off to a better start than I had imagined when our friend disappeared on us. 'Scuse us , please, Mister Red-Leather. We got a job to do."

Subject: Done and done

Stuart's words and manners were nearly cordial, but certainly non-threatening. Pao had no idea whether that was meant to be disarming or misleading or genuine. But it was certainly embarrassing, to Pao. The calm response to his own calm, yet obvious, threats showed more control than Pao had displayed. Lesson learned. Pao would deal courteously until it was no longer necessary.

When Stuart mentioned Councilor Velch, or rather his office, Pao couldn't keep his eyes from widening slightly. And he understood that what they sought would not come free, but the relatively simple task of delivering the pouch -- unopened and without tampering -- was far less than Pao had expected. "Agreed. Deliver to SatyrMarket 53, and return here, to you, with the compensation the object brings. Package is not to be opened or disturbed."

Pao reached out and picked up the pouch, then deposited it into his own belt pouch. He then extended his right hand to Stuart, "I believe you offered me an option of the palm of a hand earlier. Here is mine for the transactiion." If Stuart takes the hand and shakes it, Pao will smile genuinely. If Stuart doesn't take the proferred hand, it it no worse than Pao had expected, based on his own introduction, and he will still smile, but it will be a knowing one. Then he will turn, pause for a few seconds to see what the others accompanying him will do, then he will head for their table.

At the table, he pauses briefly to glance at all of his companions.. "Stay if you wish, for as long as you wish. I will stay no longer. I will regale those of you who stayed back with my folly, and with the result of it, when we are away from this place." He then heads for the door without looking back.

Grshak started to rankle at Maaht's request, then realized it was just that -- a request. He knew by now that the red-wearing half orc was crude in his delivery most times. It just seemed to be his way. Gorsh was finally getting used to it. He shrugged, and said,"Yeah, no problem." Then he finally stashed the unused arrow and walked toward the main entrance, the light of which he could see dimly around the corner.

[[ If the others are on their way in, or if they are already there, he won't have to call them. If they are not currently coming, or they are not there yet ... ]]

" ...'Ey! Guys and gals! Yoo-hooooo! Maaht and Drassar have a plan, I think. I'm in. How about you people?"

Without waiting for a reply, he heads back to where Maaht and Drassar are, cursing at himself under his breath for not remembering to purchase a few torcnes in town ...

Topic: You Filthy Little Thief!!!
Subject: Not in a strong position, but...

Pao was of the opinion that the sudden laughter at his statement was meant to shake Pao and whoever had followed him. He had not looked back to see who would follow, for that would have shown a desire for backup, a weakness. His approach, as he had designed it, was from a position of strength. Not from the position of the precarious unknown they were actually in the middle of. The large man who responded by taking the drink did so with the purpose of letting Pao and any companions see at least his face. And that face was not a pretty sight. Pao had seen worse, but not by much. And the -- man? thing? -- eyed Pao and his companions. Watching the shift of that one functioning eye, Pao guessed that at least two more had followed him, but who? It made no difference. He was not alone, and so was the calmer for it.

And that calmness that Pao was experiencing could have only been given him by Our Lady of the Protected Souls.

“Not many dare come in here calling me Virgin. You’re either very dumb or you have a death-wish. Still, you bring a drink, and it seems to be my favourite. So what do you want? A knife in your throat or the palm of a hand?”

"I am not fool enough to wish for death, but I don't fear it. So let's just call me stupid, then. I -- we -- have come here to find you. As far as the options you have given me, if by palm of the hand you mean a gesture of cordiality, I find the latter more acceptable. You know this symbol."

With one hand, Pao touches the silver disk on his chest that has an embossed rose in the center, the symbol of Lysora, the Sacred Mother. "I am comfortable wielding Our Lady's gifts. So let's dispense with the posturing and get to it, eh?"

"We were told you had information that might be useful to us in our endeavor. Ormander Galios runs an orphanage on West Gutterfallstreet. I'm sure you know of it. Recently he has been accused of a theft he did not commit. We seek knowledge of that theft, the reason for it, and who is responsible for it. We have been told you have at least some of the knowledge we seek. Whether we intend to aid that person or to punish is neither relevant nor important to you, as far as I am concerned. We would speak with the person or people involved about our business with them. This is not a demand, nor is it a threat. It is a statement of intent. Now, what is it that you want?"

Topic: A Cold Day in Hell
Subject: Thought Pearson was a private ...

Pearson looked up at Cpl. Johannsen as she worked on the taping of his ribs. He tried to cooperate with her so she and the Ell-Tee didn't have to do all the work, rolling his body slightly one way and then the other to facilitate the passing ot the roll of tape from hand to hand as the rwo worked. It hurt, but hell!, everyone was hurt!. And The Coro'ral and Ell-Tee were working on him in spite of their own injuries. When they finished, he looked at both of them ans smile weakly, but genuinely, showing much relief. He reached up and ran the back of his hand across his mouth, then paused to look at it. No blood. That's a good sign. he thought. Then the corporal began checking him over, poking gently here and there, taking blood pressure and temperature, checking for any other major wounds. As she worked, she asked, "How are you doing Corporal Pearson? I want to get you into a reclining position and not on your back but I don't want you to do anything but lie there"

"Thanks, Lieutenant ... ... ... Corp'ral. It's a lot better now. I feel like the quarterback that just got sacked by a mess of gorillas from the other team. Any idea what that thing was that got us?"

The corporal called the Lt. Kernan back to help her move Pearson to a slightly-more-upright position. Lieutennt Kernan told her to take a break and he'd handle it. The Lt. used Pearson's own backpack as one of the props and, when done, Pearson was actually -- slightly -- comfortable. He smiled again at the two and nodded a silent thanks this time. Then he got a few pills and an order to drink water with them. Then the lieutenant spoke, patting pearson on the shoulder as he was gettung up from Pearson's side, "Hold tight, Ranger, We’re all getting’ the hell outta here as soon as we can."

"No problem, sir. Can do." But there was an obvious questioning look on the private's face, indicating that he had a question that he knew he shouldn't ask. Ina few seconds, even that was gone, replaced by a look of grim determination.

As Corporal Johannsen moved to a chair to sit down, she picked up her piece and took it with her. Pearson wondered if she was married. If not, she would make someone a heck of a wife, he thought. As she moved toward the chair, Pearson glanced at her left hand, looking for a ring or the tell-tale mark of one. But he was unable to see most of the hand because it was holding her rifle. He guessed he could ask her later. Then came the sudden shocking thought,"No WAY !! If I asked her that, she might think I was askin' so's I could move in on her if she wasn't. No, he'd just stay dumb and quiet, maybe keep an eye on her hands until he was able to see for himself..

Looking at the corporal, Pearson tries another attempt at humor to distract himself from the pain until the pill "kicked in", " Corp'ral Johannsen? Don't think this place would make it on the books as a quiet vacation spot, would it?"

Topic: When the Silence Breaks...
Subject: Motolov Cogsnail

Moto was a typical-looking Duskan, right down to his choice of clothing colors. His brown hair, skin, and eyes complimented the deep-green-dyed leather backing the scales on his armor. The earth-brown cloak he wore had an extraordinarily voluminous hood. Likewise, the haft of his dwarven waraxe was wrapped in alternating brown and deep-green dyed leather wrapping also. Etched into both sides of the head of he waraxe was the symbol of the Three Thirds of Atlam's Angle, an equilateral triangle divided into three smaller triangles. The design was rough, as if etched or scratched into the metal by hand.

Moto had actually intended to stay cloistered at the Temple of the Mighty One for quite a while longer, but was encouraged by the more experienced priests to fill out his knowledge of the world and its people. He was informed that this could only be done by "coq'nef tainn", or "the walkabout". When it was determined that Moto still had no inclination to do as suggested, he was forced into it by the claim that is was the will of Atlam, as told to to all the members of the High Triumvirate. This was not something that Moto could sidestep any longer. He did as he was bid and left, still confused and uncertain at so what it was, specifically, he was supposed to do. The Lesser Mights only told him that he knew what he needed to know, and would learn what he was supposed to learn.

As if drawn, so has he come to Veythor, to Carheain Lake and the lake-front city of Sankirst, to The Burning Treant Tavern, to find -- he knew not what. Only Atlam the Mightone knew what was in store for the stocky Motolov Cogsnail ...

Just as he was entering the place, a tall man stood. A man with skin and hair nearly as dark as Moto's own, wearing skins incolors similar to Moto's own garb, and bearing an axe, as well! This man was more than a chance meeting for Moto. He was THE meeting he was sent to find, the one which he was meant to learn from, as told to him by the Mights of the Temple! He wondered when he himself would develop this ability because, currently, the "how" of it was beyond his understanding Moto moved to find a seat at a table as the man spoke, leaning his axe against his chair and shrugging off his knapsack to place it on the floor, under the table and resting against his leg.

When the man spoke, the voice was similar to the voice of Moto's grandfather when he was in the throes of the "storyteller's muse". By Atlam's Blade! The man was a walking "pillar of portents", he was! And the noticeable accent showed him to be from a home even farther north than Moto's clanhome was. At least that much was different.

His request for even a small amount of attention was wasted on Moto, for the Duskan was already enthralled and entranced by the potential for knowledge the man had already presented to him.

The big man introduced himself as Gunther, of the Eternal Mountain Clan. Moto had only a passing knowledge of the clan, less than most, he imagined. But of Jaques leVert, Moto had knowledge. Not any more than anyone else, but more knowledge of leVert than of Gunther's clan. That leVert was present at "star-fall" was something that Moto envied. To see a star fall from the Heavens! Such a sight devoutly to be wished by many a worshipper -- layman, acolyte, clergy, or priest. But it seemed to have cost leVert dearly, for now he was lost. And the big man blamed himself? For failed courage? What courage wouldn't be shaken by the fall of a Heavenly Object?

Gunther continued speaking, mentioning a second chance at redemption for himself, and a vision of leVert in danger in -- in? -- the ruined peak of Dal Aurem. His offer of a blessing from his village shaman was of more worth to Moto than the wealth offered by the leaflets he had seen. Although the money could be useful in procuring a few needed items. His current purse of 9 silver and 3 copper coins might get him a meal, of sorts, but he had no high expectations of sleeping anywhere but the stable tonight.

After Gunther sat, a reddish-haired woman with green eyes asked a question, which Gunther answered quickly and with little or no elaboration. When he finished, and before he could sit down again, Moto stood, cleared his throat, and spoke, his deep, "rounded" voice carrying easily over the mild din of the other patrons.

"I, for one, know the value of gifts and favours from ancestors and and ancestral gifts. I also know the difference between the two. Given any chance to redeem onself in the eyes of the ancestors is an oportunity not to be taken lightly. For one as short-lived as your yourself and your kind, Gunther, to recognize that is both interesting and impressive. I, Motolov Cogsnail, will pledge myself, and my axe -- both servants of Atlam the Mighty one -- to your cause. There was mention of registry, signing marks, and information? Are you the person to whom I speak to provide these things?

Hostage: Against ethos to agree to a captor's demands AFTER a deal is made? No. Actually, that is the Paladin's make-up. Trustworthy, word-boind, truthful, that sort of thing is his or her mainstay. Paladin won't make a deal and then renege on it, but he may make a deal that is slightly ambiguous and could seem to be what the captor will settle for, but could be twisted to actually allow the Paladin to act within his "code". Tough to do, but fun to try.

Dragon: Here, I agree with you.
The Lawful component of his morals and ethics would prevent him from punishing something if he had no reason or knowledge that would justify said punishment.
The Good component of his make-up would justify allowing an intelligent and free-thinking creature (regardless if alignment) to live free and freely, as is it's right. Unless of course, his own life, or that of others, is in imminent danger from the creature ..

Cirro? Sorry about the Guestbook info. I was mistaken. Vanna is on the guest list, as Savanna Nix. Clint and Charles are not, but links are below:

Clint of the East Wood

Charles, Son of Bronze

Hostage: I agree with Kaelyn. Paladin would negotiate to secure the safety of the hostage, then exact retribution on the perp for daring to act in such a fashion.

Dragon: I kinda agree with Kaelyn here. But the Paladin's tenets don't usually say "suffer ye not Evil to live (at all)". If his quest is to rid the area of the dragon, or to punish it for a recent act, then he would, indeed, act as Kaelyn suggests.

Although, if he happens to run across the dragon by chance, and knows not if the dragon has committed an evil act, he may just ride on, allowing the creature his allotment of life. This act, and it's reasoning, is also within his tenets.

But, on a side note, the goody-two-shoes Paladin is not above kicking a dog for peeing on his favorite suit of armor. He is, after all, a free-thinking being and subject to emotions like anger. And sometimes the anger can/might erupt into violence, detrimental but not lethal .. .

Wow! I wish I knew how (or even who) could so turn someone off from playing D&D. Your writing here shows potential. Wonder if I (or anyone here) can talk you into a (as in one, as in short, as in simple) straight-up D&D game to show you not only good gaming, but good and competent ruling, world-building, and excellent help in character creation ...

I take it as a personal goal to re-add D&D to your gaming repertoire. I mean no offense, and if you are dead-set against it, I will drop it like a hot cannonball, but I hate to see talent go unchallenged ...
