Subject: Eavni, uncertain

Though she understood what reasoning he gave, Evani was not pleased. She nodded, and wished her new companion a good night's sleep, thinking to herself that it may be the last any of them get for some time.

And so she was alone with Ben. No, she chided herself, not Ben. Septimus. She sighed heavily as Shaben closed the door and turned to the pirate. He was not, she realized, as frightening as the mythology purported. He was, in point of fact, quite sad looking at the moment.

Evani supposed it was a way things of this nature went; when casting off one life, a life one had lived in for years, to reclaim the dangerous truth of oneself, must be a bit like dying. She wouldn't know what that was like; she was as she had always been, Evaniallaestra of the Crossroads, walker of worlds. A name she had been given by Navalla long ago, before her world burned.

Memories reached for her, tickling the nape of her neck. The High Priestess poured silvery streams of water from a pitcher into large earthen pots, feeding the burgeoning greenery growing within them. As Evani watched, crouching upon a rafter above the holy woman, a song slipped from older lips and the soft sounds swirled around the leaves and blossoms. Some of the plants were browned and the earth dry and cracked, and some looked green and healthy yet smelled like lost causes and sadness. Tendrils of music reached out and carressed each frond, and she looked up into the rafters at Evani, who watched in amazement. Being watched, she felt sheepish and cartwheeled along the beam to the wall, when she grabbed the thick wood and dropped her body. Hanging there for a moment, she grinned at the preiestess and swung herself, flipping twice before landing in a crouch.

"Ah, my young child," the preiestess sighed, "So much energy within you."
"Forgive me, High Priestess Navalla."
"Never appologize for life, my child. Now out with it girl, what troubles those enormous eyes?"
Evani bent herslf backwards and walked on her hands to the darkest, dryest of the plants. Shifting her weight to one hand, she pointed and craned her head to see the High Priestess, "These plants look dead, or nearly so. Why continue to feed and water them? Would energy not be better spent on those who still have a chance?"

But the look in the eyes of her caretaker caused her to straighten herslf and stand, head bowed, as the answer came.

"And had we taken that approach with you, or any of the children left upon our doorstep, how many of you would still be here? This plant, though deadly if it were to touch your lips, is still alive inside. It yearns, as do we all, for room to grow and light to bathe in. It's roots sustain creatures who shiver in the winter cold and scratch at the snow for food. It's blossoms feed the insects and provide the nectar that we use in many of our dishes. Though it may look dead, it is not and it's life affects other in ever expanding ripples, as will you one day."

She gazed at Septimus and wondered if she could like him, even a little, instead of seeing in him the man whose ripple had affected her.

"Stay in this room, if you like. But they are coming for Ben, and they do not know of me. to my thinking, we would be safer in my room where I can keep watch. But if you think things between us too strained now, I understand. But," she said, dropping her voice and casting her gaze to the floor. "...it would afford us an opportunity to get to know each other. The real us, not the us we pretend to be to save our own skins."

Her feet stopped, and though her head was high, she felt as if she were no more significant that a virus. In truth, she was terrified of the ship, of it's larger meaning in her life. It occired to her that her actions would now affect others, that it was no longer every man for himself. She honestly didn't know if she was capable of existing in ordered, polite society anymore.

The Lyrans words hit her like phaser fire and she turned, smiling that pale false imitation of a gesture, and hesitated. "I'm not used to this," she confessed. "It's been a long time since I was part of a functioning society."

Her laughter was a short, sharp sound that cut into the spaces between them.

"If I were afraid of you, I would have run by now."

She turned to Shaben, finding him much changed from their earlier meeting at the tavern, ravaged by lack of sleep.

"This is the first place I would look if I were looking for Ben." Her mouth tightened around the name. "We should find another place to hide."

Truth.

It filled the empty air with a crushing weight, and silence like a thousand piercing weapons occupied the room. She had asked - nay, demanded, and he had obliged and now she stood before the ghost of legend, the flesh of myth, and in her heart, Ben died. she mourned his passing as that of one who believes her heart's desire can never be attained, mourned the passing of a man who never truly existed but merely lived ina stolen life, a lie that blinked and breathed.

She remained, still and silent, her eyes focused on the scars before her, her mind reeling with the weight of revelation. And yet, as she mourned for one who did not exist, she knew the words that fell and accepted. It was not in her nature to embrace denial. something in her grieved for a different reason. Though she knew herself and knew she was unlike any other, the realization that a man like this, who once controlled the seas themselves it was often said, could want little to do with orphans who wandered the lands.

The scars did not disappear; they were not imaginings of a taxed mind, and they did not fade as if a waking dream. she was staring at the chesy of Septimus himself, and she trembled beneath a crushing wave of awe and fear and the knowledge that she must fight for him, no matter what the cost. To allow such a creature to fall into the hands of those who would enslave him or execute him would be a sin. He was the essence of freedom, and gave many inspiration and hope and the tales of his exploits thrilled babes in their beds as their parents storied them to sleep.

"Shaben knows?" she laughed, a low, rolling sound like thunder over velvet. "Of course he does, what am I thinking?"

She tured away, more to clear her head than anything. She brushed her hands over her face and up along the top of her head. with a sigh, she turned back to him and opened her mouth, but words died in her throat.

At last she found her voice and it was colder than she intended.

"What issues we may have now, in light of this.... confession... they can wait. if you want to live, we leave tonight. Take me to Shaben."

Secrets swirled around him in a tangled web of lies and subterfuge. Evani crossed the room in silence and set down the dagger he had entrusted her with on a chair, then leaned against the wall, posed as she had been outside. Brushing away a lock of hair that fell before her eyes, she cocked her head, observing him.

"Septimus lives," she whispered. "But you knew this. Do you protect him or hunt him?"

Before he could answer, she pushed off from the wall and stepped towards him, so that he could see the fire in her eyes. Face to face, as close as they were, she knew there would be no mistake about her intent.

"They will kill you. Shaben, as well, and Septimus, and now me, if I am found with you. So you are going to give me a deeply compelling reason to risk my own life for yours and his and that of a dead pirate lord."

The stairway was dark and smelled of rot and mold. To call it a stair was generous - it was no more than a crawlspace with upward-leading steps. It was a rather non-descript place, and at the first and second landings she found nothing of consequence. As she approached the third landing, she paused. Voices came to her in the dark, and she recognized one as the woman she had been following. The other was different, and she could not place at all. And then the words came to her. Though she could not follow the conversation in its entirety, she caught the primary message and felt all color drain from her. Her heart quickened, pouding loudly against her chest that she thought they would hear. Her only thought was to retreat.

Evani stuck to the shadows as best she could and made her way to the inn. But rather than go inside, she leaned against the building, crossed her arms over her chest, and watched the night.

She played over the conversation in her mind, and then the ones she'd shared with Ben and Shaben in the tavern. The pieces weren't fitting. something was out of place, and time was running out. Seeing nobody following after her after several long, agonizing moments, she slipped inside the building and went straight to Ben's room.

Staring at the ship docked openly, seemingly without guard, she hesitated in the shadows. She wasn't certain how long this opportunity would last. On one hand, she should bring someone with her in case things got hairy. Just because she couldn't see anyone didn't mean they werent there. On the other hand, it wouldn't do for all of them to storm the ship and walk into a possible ambush when she could simply gather info on her own.

The internal conflict lasted only a moment before she was off, keepin to the shadows as much as possible until she found a guard tower and ascended the steps....

Mas'Riat herself seemed largely unconcerned and though she could not suppress the shudder that ran though her, she could neither suppress the smile threatening to twist the corners of her lips. Sisko, that tool, had appearantly retro-activated her, since she'd really only been a member of the crew for several hours yet.

She was curious to see if the cat would catch on, however that might in fact raise a few questions and she doubted that whatever stories Sisko had had to create for her to get her into the system could stand an investigation. Her mind churned. No, better to suck it up and deal than risk exposure. Telling the Lyran about the prison was one thing entirely. He was one peron upon whom her trust would not be misplaced, and she knew that, as a fellow crew member, she could depend on him if it came down to it.

But if someone else were to look through her file, and looked into her, it would all come out. The prison, Gani, Davorious, everyone would know. And everything would change.

"My mistake," she said softly. She rose and smoothed out imagined wrinkles in her uniform. The playful, mischevious spark had died and was replaced by a cold automaton. "Have a pleasant day."

This was difficult. She focused her eyes upon the door, and willed her feet to move. Move, you spineless maggot! Davorious is coming and the only way to escape is on that ship NOW MOVE! She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

Evani's lips refused to form an answer. rather she stood in the dim hall and watched the woman disappear. When enough time had passed that she was certain would be decent, she took a single step following the woman's exit and then paused. Her eyes shifted from the exit to the doors as she considered her options.

Shaben was most likely sleeping st this late hour, and waking him would do no good, since Ben had pointed out they'd get no help tonight.

Yet she could not sleep, or bring herself to go to him just yet, and now this opportunity to pass the time had arisen....

She followed the woman.

Though he was gone again, disappered into the darkness of night with her still standing in the corridor, staring at rows of doors, she swore his touch still burned along her skin. Her fingers tightened around the handle, then relaxed, and she considered his words, his word, his truth, and wondered not for the first time about his intentions. As she stood there, lost in her own thoughts, her body suddenly aching with the need for a warm bed, something pushed into her.

The unexpected jostling from an unfamiliar woman stole Evani's attention. The woman was exceedingly beautiful, surpassing the realm of attractiveness and transceding all description. For a moment, Evani was speechless, trapped by her own physical presence. Her heart pounded, her hand on the hilt of the dagger Ben had entrusted into her care, and something in her, some hidden dark part that regretted her existance, wanted to draw the weapon regardless.

Evani suffocated that instinct with the memory of the temple attendants, and the baser, vile thought disappeared as quickly as it came upon her. Rather she stood in the hallway, staring at the woman. Words were spilling from the other woman's lips, words that became appologies, many of them.

She'd been caught completely off-guard, and had it been someone with more sinister intent, she would have fared much worse than just a shove. She knew better, she knew different, and she was going to have to step up her game a bit if she was going to make it out of here alive. But the elf in the hall with her seemed anxious only to be out of her way. though that did not stop Evani from keeping a tighter hold to her belongings.

The woman was still offering appologies even as she was trying to slip away.

"No," she soothed, "please, forgive me. I should have been paying more attention...." a thought occurred to her and she cocked her head, memorizing the woman's face, each line and curve and angle, even in the dim hall.

"Is everything okay?" she asked.

Mas'Riat considered, for a moment, that perhaps it was his smile that was the most disturbing. Surely it must unnerve some, perhaps filling weaker vessels with unease and fear, they way a snarling dog standing perfectly still can.

"I'm looking forward to meeting him, actually. Although, I really must admit, I am anxious to see the ship and go over the more technical aspects of my new life."

Small talk, she decided, was an art whose form she was completley lacking in, and yet it was good for her. Though she was uncomfortable sittingn in the open, drinking with a stranger, especically a large furry one capable of shredding her instantly, she forced herself to remain seated, to talk, because she needed it. If she was going to succeed at this, she had to be completely comfortable with it and in order ot get there, she had to suffer a little.

She hoped it got easier, this aching need to flee, hoped the craving of freedom and solitude passed from her quickly. At least by mentioning the technical aspects of the job, she had now established a reasoning to explain why she may appear antisocial.

"When are we supposed to report to he ship?"

Hoping he had left it lying about, she searched for Shaben's key but could not find it and looked again imploringly at the cleric and Quirath.

"Are you ready?"

and she cast a worried glance at Ben, who seemed far too cool for her comfort at the moment.

"Do you think," she asked ben, "he might have gone to collect his things? Quckly! Where is he staying?"

And the words had no sooner left his mouth before she was gone, and it occurred to her that she had allowed herself to become swept up in something she truly did not understand. She had always been a sucker for a good story, and this would make a tale for the ages, she was certain, if only they are survived. Yet the beasts breathing down their necks, what was it? Was it an imagined fear that drove them all now, that caused them to flee?

She knew something, it was there, in the back of her mind, on the tip of her tongue, something important, but its truth eluded her. There had been whispers, rumors in other towns, stories of people taken from their beds in the dead of night and never seen again. It occurred to her that those things she'd heard of might be tied in some wa to the things from which they ran and she suddenly realized, standing in the hall, that she had completely forgotten Shaben's room number.

"Shaben!" She called out, keeping her voice low, yet what came out was a scratching hiss. "Shaben, where are you?"

"Well then, let us take some time to explore. It will give us sometihng to do until our shifts begin."

Yet it occured to her that some of her companions might not be so comfortable goign into unfamiliar terrirtory with a stranger and she paused at the door, turning to her party members. Strands of long cinamon highlights swayed lightly in the pale breeze, and for a momwnt she stared into the faces of each of them, memorizinf them in case anything happened. She recorded every line, every crease, every shadow and curve, and smiled.

"It's okay, I don't bite."

She'd been so intent upon the maps and plans that she had completely lost track of time. taking a spare sheet of parchment from the table, she traced her own route so that she could memorize it better later, though she knew the lay of the land.

Evani nodded, choosing not to answer questions any longer. She had a feeling Ben was closer to Septimus than he was letting on, but with the soursweet wind of impending disaster filling the wind, she felt it best that they have deeper conversations later.

"Ben," she whispered, her hand still in his a moment longer than decent, "let us go now. Right now. I will return to the tavern to collect the others, but i can taste the strangeness on the wind, and it does not bode well for any of us."

and with a lingering smile, she pulled her hand slowly from his and slipped back into the gathering dark.

She arrived at the tavern quikly and went back to her table. She found only the cleric and the third woman, and Shaben's absence was noticeably prominent.

"Where has he gone?" she asked them, feeling a chill at the back of her neck.

waits for a response

"I see. But come, if you wish to run with us, we sail sooner than not, and we have little time for anything more than the gathering of belongingss and such."

Looking at them, from one to the other, she paused. "Will you come?"

evani stole away with him, the handsome tranger who seemed to know the main routes along the map of her life, and was terrified of the spoken work by which he named her. She stared at him, then blinked twice.

"Yes," she confessed. "But I was still loved. How many like us can say that?"

She wished he would speak of other things, of the coming storm they would soon flee, the weather, the average flight speed of an unladen swallow, but when she saw his resolute stance, the gleam of pupose in his eyes, she sighed.

"There was once an old temple, whose gods had gone away, and the people prayed to them anyway. THey tok in children who were unwanted, who were left upon doorsteps in the rain under darkened skies, and the children were cared for and loved like blood and sent into the world to find their own fortunes. But the light in the darkness was too terrible a eauty for some, and those who remained were slaughtered by cowards and left in a line as the only home they ever knew burned to the gound beside them."

She paused, looked off into the skies. "And now I am left to find the cowards, and deliver them into the hands of the souls of those passed."

She turned her eyes to him again, watching his expressions, and soft music filled the space. She realized her fingers had begin to strum a light tune, completely independant of her intentions. She chuckled.

"I'm sorry. My fingers have a mind of their own, it seems. But you. Who is Benjamin Barker?"

She pointed off in the distance, to the docks and the masts of tall ships and the low dark clouds craling across the heavens. A chill gripped the land, she felt that wel enough, but she didn't understand, not yet.

"Those," she said, indicating the boats, "We'll be taking one of those, won't we?" It was less a question than her own way of working this out in her head. Perhaps it was only the drink, or the morose Shaben trying to crawl into his bottle, but she felt the need to go, and go soon, and knew that something in the dark was coming, something unpleasant.

"I've never been on one, you know. I wouldn't know the first thing about it. But if it keeps us all alive, I suggest we find our way to one with all due haste."
