Subject: Mad Genius Hijacks Players - PART ONE

Jonah smiles, and a sigh escapes his lips. "I'm sorry, that was unkind of me. I haven't been myself lately, and I'm sorry. Cindi, let's start over. Again." Hs he turns to sweep the room with eyes, his gaze lands on Delilah, and the smile widens. "And Delilah, my sweet brave girl. Since you've elected youself her champion, it only makes sense that the two of you are together again."

Delilah's fingertips graze her arms as she crosses them, staring at him with a curious mixture of fear, frustration, and familiarity. "I'll go with her if it means keeping her safe from you," she warned. The glint in her eyes was a steel and fire Hank wished she had within herself.

"Good!" he rejoiced, and looked from Hank to Chris to Josh. One was lost to him at the moment, he knew, but not entirely. She was in there, waiting. She had a plan, and he needed to see what it was because this one...there was something strange about her, as there had always been. She was different then, but that was so long ago now that he was not certain he could find the real Henrietta within her even if he tried.

Which left Josh and Chris. And his plan unfolded. "Chris, I wouldn't ever risk the lives of these beautiful women. Why don't the ladies stay here with me? You take Josh and bring me that briefcase, and maybe we can all get the hell out of her and back to our lives."

Josh looks to Hank, still swimming in a se of her own thoughts. He desperately wanted to know if she knew, or if what she had seen in that locker would reveal anything about him, but he didn't dare ask now. Not in front of all those witnesses.

It was Delilah who broke the unfomfortable silence first. She reached out to Cindi, tentatively, uncertain wether the woman would accept her offer of friendship or bite her hand from her arm. "It's not too far from here, right? Maybe your cat is fine. Would it be okay if I went with you?"

And though Cindi opens her mouth to speak, the opportunity is lost as Josh begins to cough.

It's not a normal sound. Neither is it healthy sounding, as small bubbles froth at the corners of his mouth. It's darker there, and Jonah sees right away that it's blood. JoSh's eyes have rollup in his head and he shudders, body convulsing, and every musle in the mans body has tensed to the point of nearly snapping. The exertion is clear, from the bulging veins to the grim set of his frame.

Chris leaps into action and takes him from the chair to the floor, prying open Josh's mouth to find he's already bitten his tongue, the source of the blood. Hank only stares through everyone, as if she were a thousand miles away, though sh is much much closer. She's close enough to reality to see that Jonah needs more than just the briefcase. She's close enough to reality to see that he has the answers, but wears the cheaspest of excuses to make himself look the fool.

Delilah catches Hank's eye and understands suddenly that something is happening here, somthing deeper than briefcases and kittens. They are being positioned, like puppets, onto the proper stage. "You have no reason to trust me," Delilah whisperd to Cindi, "but I believe we should go now, while everyone's distracted."

Distracted. Chris looks down at Josh, at the face rapidly losing it's color only to be replaced by a violet tinged blue that hits first the lips, then darkens the hollows of the eyes. He is fading, drifting from life at an alarming rate, despite Chris' best efforts and Jonah fumbles his way though a pantomime of assistance.

Josh's body slackens, suddenly limp, and Jonah drags Chris from the seemingly deadman.

In the silence, nothing moves. There is an absolute silence, anf Jonah breaks the spell by approaching Chris. The body is behind them, closer to Hank, and separated from the others by the table and a few chairs now. Hank looks down at the body on the floor and sighs.

Subject: post still coming!

Ok folks, it's Monday now and as you can see, i didn't post.

Why, you ask? What possible reason could i have for disappointing you all? Well, it's simple really. I was stuck.
And not like on the side of the road in a ditch, it was a little more sinister.

By the end of the night Saturday, I had 4 four versions of the BIG POST written. Why 4? Because each time i worte it, the characters seemed to take on a life of their own and took over. Like lunatics at the asylum. And it was great, really just none of it fit right. So I'm going through each of the four versions, selecting and cutting and pasting them together to form the big one. And since we have TWO new people, I have a lot more options.

Subject: The Fate Of The Game

I want to take a moment to let you all know that this game is not a lost cause. While we may be losing yet another player, the game itself goes on. Spiders has been dealing with a recent series of terrible realworld isues that have just been coming down one after another on her, and I've been away so often trying to help her though it.

We are trying to get back into the posting rythmn, but we would like to ask that you bear with us for a few more days. For all involved, it would be easiest on us both to post on Sundays and Wednesdays.

I've been able to post for at least Hank as of now. I will be posting for Spiders as well in the form of another update, but I am honestly not sure I can get it in today. I will certainly try.

I will be reopening the recruitment soon, as well, so that we can get some people to fill upcoming story arcs.

Also, you all can remember having known Jonah in some cpaacity, though the particulars are a bit fuzzy. You have free reign over remembering if you liked him or not.

Rock on, good people!

Subject: HANK

"STOP!"

Her voice had left her before she could consciously stop herself, and the sound ripped itself free from her heart and her soul. Hank knew in that moment was the words, the tiny, meaningless words words words were forming teeth that were tearing into her flesh. Though there was little she could do to stop the madness, she was at the very least capable of changing its direction.

"Stop fighting. Stop now. If you're going to go, then go already, but for chrissakes just shut the f*** up already. Ever notice how he makes us all distracted whenever we try to get that locker open? Do what you want but i'll have no part in it. I'm going home. I have to check. And then I am coming back here. But first, I'm going to open that f***ing locker."

As she rises to her feet, she hesitates, as if expecting to meet some resistance from Jonah, who looks bemused by the entire thing. Getting none, she returns to the locker and starts at the one marked HP. It feel familiar somehow, as if she's meant to do this, yet as her fingers find the key and the key and the key begins to turn, she feels the rolling thunder beneath her feet before she hears the dreaded machina, those miserable gears beneath them all as they grind on in furtherance of some nefarious purpose.

On the heels of the grinding of the gears there comes another sound, a low clicking, as if a projector has run out of tape and the end keeps flap flapping. She tries not to look bothered. In truth, she knows it shouldn't bother her at all, that sound, except that there's something inside her that knows that sound. Knows what it really is

It's like the clicking of a metal gurney through a hospital where one of the wheels is bad.

The sudden realization nearly drops her, but she clings to the locker. Hank Preston knows that sound intimately. And it occurs to her that the grinding gears is a harbinger of something much worse than recoverd memory. She stares at the locker door and lifts the metal latch. As the door swings open, her eyes fall on the one thing that will make the biggest difference in the world. Though there are other things in there as well, she only has eyes for that thing, the one that will change things forever.

Her face remains impassive, not betraying for a single moment that which she has seen, and the act takes surprisingly little effort, seeming rather to be a throwback to her past that can not be completely recalled at present.

"I'm sorry, I find classifications and technical terms regarding one's psych quite funny. It's quite amusing, how through such terms, people think they can understand the mind and people's behaviours. Isn't that strange? People seem to have the uttermost desire to name things they do not understand, just to give them the illusion that they do understand it.”

Shaking her head, to clear her train of thought, Cindi returns to the topic of discussion.

"Hmm..." Cindi looks at Jonah carefully, "I see then. So, the only information you possess is regarding who we were. Even so, does that information alone not yield anything regarding capabilities? Why not say what we can do, based on deductions from who we were?"

Jonah’s laughter is a short sharp bark, like a master growing tired of his dogs. When he speaks, it’s slowly and patiently, as if explaining the concept of naptime to a toddler, but his eyes have gone cold, dead, and a stillness envelops him that makes him seem more sinister than any of them had imagined.

“For someone who has no idea what’s going on, you run your mouth more than you need to, Cindi. So why don’t you do yourself, and all of us, a favor, and shut the hell up. Right. Now. Please.” He drops his head a moment, rubbing his eyes as if suddenly taken with a headache. “I’m consistently amazed by the amount of wrong information you shove inside that head of yours and take as gospel. Let me take you through this one…more…time… and I will speak slowly just for you, and use small words so you can process it this time. No, the person each of you was before does NOT matter. Who you are now, the things you will learn about yourself, THAT si what matters. THAT is what will keep you from the death that walks this town.

If you think I have little practical information, then pay no attention to me. Later, when you’re dying in the fog, you can keep that in mind. What I need right now is for those of you who want to live to tell me everything that’s happened, everything you’ve seen, since you woke up here.”

He stares into each face, noting that Delilah appears to be going into shock, and then back at Cindi.

“Don’t you have a cat to check on?”

Delilah, shaking, turns her attention to Jonah. "There's no need for that. Who do you think you are that you can talk to people that way?"

And Jonah regards her, seemingly distracted. His eyes fall on her scars, and as if she can feel the weight of his stare, she shoves her hands in her back pockets as his lips turn slightly, in a failure of a smile. "Same sweet, brave Delilah," he sighs. "Just like when we met."

"I'm sure you've all seen the Darkness? And by now you've figured out that it can be turned on and off, like a lightswitch, by doing certain things.

Well, there's something I need that I can't get to on my own. I need you to bring it to me. There's something I need to do to set this all right again, but that briefcase is absolutely vital. The thing is, I can't remember where I left it. My last go with consciousness was a little chaotic, at best. It was either the bowling alley, the hospital, or the inn. Wherever it is, it's important. As in getting you all back to where you ought to be kind of important. And you all want that now, don't you? Well, other than Josh. After all, we have some unfinished business to attend, don't we?"

"Oh I quite agree, Jonah chuckles, and takes the bottle from Hank. ""It's just that what you're driving at really doen't play into this at all. I'm not talking about your skills or your aptitue. I'm talking you. The central core of you. The thing in you that decides if you're the kind of person to shoot someone out of acute paranoia and anti-social borderline personality disorders...Cindi...or the kind who steps in to save someone they don't know because it's 'right'...Chris."

Jonah turns to Chris now and arches a brow. "you really expect me to answer with you waving that at me? How am I supposed to answer you if I'm shot full holes? Besides. As Ol' Blue Eyes used to say, 'The best is yet to come.'"

Jonah reaches out and takes hank's chin, turning her head this way and that. "You'll be okay, Henrietta. For a while, at least."

"Besides," he adds. "It's not like she's tried to kill any of you."

As the pain lessened to a tolerable plateau, Hank did as Jonah Hawke suggested, and sat. Taking the bottle from the current roatation, she used part of her shirt to cover the mouth of the bottle, then dabbed the wet spot on her cheeck.

The deep gash had been seared closed by the heat of the bullet but the skin around it was slightly stippled and gritty with gunshot residue and powder.

"Thank you," she muttered, and took a long drink from the bottle. Distance crept into her gaze; she stared at the wall, at points beyond the wall, and it seemed like she forgot where she was. She seemed almost catatonic, but for blinking.

Delilah screamed as the shot rang out and scrambled back, overturning a chair. The small of her back hit the counter and she couldn't go any farther. When Chris took Cindi's weapon and disabled her, she turned to the woman and cried out in shock.

"What the hell was that?! Why did you shoot her? She wasn't sick! She's not sick now! Look at her!"

"But she was," Jonah interjected. "Wasn't she. She was pale and sick and looked like death on toast? Like there was something seriously wrong with her."

Delilah stared, unblinking, for a moment. "Who the hell are you," she shouted. "Just tell us!"

But Jonah was unwilling to share. He sighed and looked at Chris, then Hank, then Delilah, and Cindi. He looks to Josh for a moment, and smiles.

"Who I am isn't really important right now. THe bigger picture, people, look at the bigger picture. Do you all know who you are? Because I do. I just don't know why you're here. By the way, Chris, how is your partner back home? And Delilah. Poor, sad, sweet Delilah. Or, not so sweet, perhaps? Does anyone but me really know why you play with clay?"

Confused, Delilah sits on the counter and wonders why Jonah is talking about.

"You see," Jonah explains, "I know you better than i thought I did. Who were before today doesn't matter anymore. It's who you are now that is important. You have to figure that out fast or you won't make it out of here. So what if you have no memory. Memory is a tricky thing, and you're better off without it."

Delilah turned to Chris. She can't think right now, can't process Jonah's craziness. "What do we do now," she asked, feeling lost again.

Jonah sighs and takes another swig from the bottle.

"What makes you think I'm the chief of police? and what pictures are you talking about?"

"No, no, no, little lady. You've got that all wrong. He's the cop, if you really want to know." Jonah points at Chris, now in possession of the gun, and shrugs. "I never was the kind for public service."

taking another swig, he wipes his mouth with the back of his hand and offers the bottle to Delilah. "Listen, it will all come back to you sooner or later. I think. Maybe. Well, possibly. A little, anyway.Drink this, Henrietta. And for gods sake, woman, sit down before you Keel over. you've just been grazed a bullet."

They took away my journal. It was over nothing. I didn't do anything. There was a new girl, and she and P circled each other like dogs. It was okay for a few hours. Then the new girl, L, walked by P's table and pushed all the cards off. P had worked so hard on that house of cards. She stood up and slugger L and then it was like a switch flipped in everyone. There was a riot. I may have accidentally and completely unintentionally stabbed K or W with a fork.

In the neck.

I was covered in blood. It sprayed everywhere. And they locked me in 4 Points again and sent Dr. H to see me. Every single freaking day. I think at one point he was there for a few days. I have to go now, it's time for group.

Dinner was craptastic. something pink. Maybe it was suppsed to be salmon. I hate fish. So I stabbed K. I like K, so it was totally an accdent but she's gone now. They moved her to work on a different floor. So where... ok. Dr. H was there with me. He dressed me and fed me and talked to me. THey played music. Classicla music. They played videos on the cieling of bunnies and happy families. I never realized hoe good looking Dr. H is. He has great hands. I think he purposely copped as many feels as he could.

Tension, thick and tangible, filled the space between Hank and Cindi, whose motivations remained hidden from each other. Cindi held out her hand, the keys set upon the flat of her palm as if ona silver platter and Hank, still consimed by thoughts of the journal, and the locakers, and the need for answers, took them.

Brief conversation, which Hank had hoped would ease some of the disturbance between her and the woman who bandaged her, proved fruitless; rather than improve things, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Hank hadn't understood, and Cindi hadn't realized this.

Instead, Cindi bent slightly, imperceptibly, and replaced the journal into her backpack, at the same time drawing the gun from her pocket. Hank had taken only steps before stopping before the row of lockers, but the mistake had been made; she'd turned her back ona dangerous woman.

Cindi's arm extended in a single, fluid movement and her thumb expertly pulled back the hammer. The words that fell like cold rain from her lips never registered with Hank. Preston had heard only the small click, the unmistakable harbinger of death and destruction, and had time only to turn her head.

"You bitc-" was all she could manage before the click. In the small space, the gunshot is liek the end of the world. The bullet screams toward Hank, hot and unholy, and sears a trail across her cheek, its trajectory marred by the turn of her head. The scream that escapes Preston's lips is anguished and dangerous, the sound of a wild animal suddenly injured. The wound is seared by thr hrat of the bullet as it straks her face.

The resounding silence is deafening. Chris presses into action, calling upon suppressed memories of his former life, and subdues Cindi.

There is a sudden flurry of activity and emotion in the resulting aftermath. The keys dangle from the lock, abandoned by Hank in the face of her near-murder. Delilah begins to hyperventilate, while Josh stares, shocked and slightly amused by the chaos around him.

"What the hell were you...what the....?" hank seems incapable of thinking or speaking in complete sentances.

But it is Jonah who seems the most unaffected by the events unfolding before him. "I would expect that from you," he said resignedly, and it is unsure to whom he is referring. "You never did like her much."

Moments passed, long tortured moments in which Time mocked them, the passage of each second seeming to drag on weeks at a time. She felt the blood clinging to her, and it seemed as if the fabric sucked against her in a desperate attempt to suck away her soul.

She focused her mind, thought of long, wide roads through cool meadows and dark forests. Familiar things. Comforting things. Turning to Septimus she reached up and slapped him, trying to draw him out of the appearant stupor he was in.

"Snap out of it, man! Now you find yourself faced with two roads, at you standing at the cross. So you can stand here and wait fro your death to find you, or you can move your bloody feet now. But I'll stand stand here and wait for you to decide." She turned her head and stared down the alley, searching, and returned her gaze to Septimus.

"I'm going back to the inn to change and get my things, and then I will find this Corfsand, if he even exists. But while you think on your decision, think on this. How well, exactly, did you know your dear Shaben? And if you owe him your life, are you really willing to settle up right now?"

Evani sighed.

"And he saved my life, so I know what I suggest may pain you. It pains me, and I was not as close with him as you. But we must think this through, Septimus. How else would they have known to find us here?"

She turned and fled back the way she had come, unsure if she was headed in the right direction, just knowing she had to keep running.

She could not be caught. Would not be caught.

Evani was not in the practice of weighing lives against each other, but these were desperate times, and no amount of love weighed properly against her own life. In the end, she wondered if she was capable of such love, the kind where she would willingly risk her life for another. But here she was, doing just that, wasn't she? So why run?

Because she had to.

Love was nothing, at the moment, more than a distraction to her primary concern, finding Corfsand. All else would have to wait, and she trusted in love and loyalty enough that she knew Septimus would understand. If finding Corfsand and righting all of this wrongness meant leaving love behind, then she would.

Evani found her way through the maze of streets back to the inn and bolted her door shut, leaning against it as she breathed heavily. Her travelling clothes would have to do. As she stripped herself of the bloodied gown, she fingered the once brilliant fabric and smiled wistfully. It really had looked beautiful on her.

The old clothes fit against her liek a second skin, and called to her senses memories of the road, her true home. There were roads here, unexplored by her and rife with possibility. If she survived, she promised herself a horse and long, long vacation.
