The dog is definitely not moving and the others (the owners of the eyes around you) are keeping still.

In the first aid kit, beneath bandages and creams and whatnot ususally found in a first aid kit is a small handgun. It's a .22 and there is a little baggie of 5 bullets.

Cindi has found the first major weapon in the game.

CINDI & HANK

Hank's eyes dart wildly as she circles the snarling beast, her body tense and ready to break into a run. The switchblade in her hand trembles, the trwmbling is the only thing she feels. It reverberates along her arm, into her chest, where her heart pounds ceaselessly. Fear is an arcid, metallic tang the fills her dry mouth.

"Good doggy," she whispers, [raying to wake. "You're not real. This place isn't real. Or it's real because I'm dead."

Cindi, having fled the pet center with her new possessions, stops suddenly as Hank's voice is caught on the wind. At the sound of another person, Cindi is both concerned and elated, but she sees the eyes in the dark ahead, and the flash of those eyes off what she correctly assumes is a blade.

Realizing it could be anyone, good or bad, she hesitates a moment, deep in thought.

Screaming can be heard in the distance, the sounds of terror ripped from throats only a street away, but echoing eerily in the darkness. Suddnly, Cindi hears a closer scream, as a pair of eyes moves.

Cindi can hear growling, and the snapping of teeth, and she runs onward, towards the closest scream, in time to see a woman in black stab a doglike abomination in the eye with a switchblade. The woman staggers back, gasping for breath, a gaping bite wound on her left arm. The woman turns at the approach of another, and opens her mouth to scream, but all that escapes is a rasping choked cry.

"You..." the woman manages, "...you real? Are you fucking real? Oh god..." and she drops to her knees hard, clearly unable to deal with more wierdness.

This is how Hank Preston met Cindi Lawran.

My brother invited me to spend the weekend at his new place after he moved out. He and I spent the entire weekend playing an endless Rifts session with his best friend. At one point, after four pots of coffee and 2 Jolts, and enough junk food to feed Malaysia, I sat up and said:

"Hey! Let's go to Chi-Town and throw things at the crazies!"

....and had to roll a new character ten minutes later.

Subject: Evani Ashore!

Evani had lightly kissed his cheek and laughed before disappearing to her cabin to ocllect her things. She felt the glide and lurch of the ship as she docked, felt the sudden ceasation of movement, and her legs turned to jello without the rocking sway of the ocean beneath her.

Not knowing where they might be, for this was farther than she'd travelled, she paused, staring down at her dress. Perhaps she had been given the dress as a message, a small clue to the type of man they were to meet. Perhaps he was a noble, and to observe foreign customs neded to leek like a lady, but it would be difficult with gunbelts on her hips. With a sigh, she removed them and tied a strip of rag around her thigh, against which she fit her pistol. Evani had no plans to go unarmed into unknown territory; to do so would be suicide.

Stashing her gunbelts into her bag, She collected her belongings and went topside, and immediately lost her breath.

Around them, reaching into the skies, she saw the tall spires and baskets of crows nests, and richly detailed sails fluttering in the breeze. Awestruck by the beauty, she walked slowly, her eyes on the many sails and flags, and pressed the flat of her palm against Septimus's shoulder to given her something to mark her bearings. Her instrument twanged occaisionally as she follwed Septimus and Reckless, but she paid little heed; while her mind was tracing the route from the ship, her eyes were dazzled by the silks and fabrics of the new and interesting people around her. Scents both familiar and unknown mingled together, enchanting her senses as she followed the men. At one point she lost physicla contact with Septimus and simply stood, staring, turning in a slow circle.

Passersby made berths around her, and the cool metal of her pistol against her outer thigh kept her focused enough that she did not let too much time pass in wide-eyed wonder. There would be time enough to shop and browse and lose herself in the newness of this unfamiliar territory later, once Shaben was returned to them. Hurrying, she ran after her companions, eager to stock up on supples and push forward with the quest.

Her thoughts turned to Shaben, how he was doing, where he was. As she caught up with the men, she forced herself to remain positive. He chose to go, she reasoned, chose, as in made the willing decision. Yet part of her wondered it that had not been merely to protect them all incase she herself had decided upon instinct instead of reason. Surely Shaben had to know she would have gladly put a bullet through the full blood wench's eye to save him...

She brushed aside a strand of hair from her face and smiled at Reckles and Septimus.

"It's going to be okay," she whispered to neither, to both, to herself.

While I am a big fan of the blockbusters, I'm also entirely respectful and appreciative of those hidden gems, the offbeat and the indies.

These are movies that inspire me, or motivate me, and make me want to wite movies that good.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:mind alteration, damaged love, hope
Stranger Than Fiction: human condition and cookies
Being John Malkovitch: Cusak. 'Nuff said.
Crash: more awards than a mountain
Sliding Doors: Funny, witty, good dialogue
Tape: painful, raw, emotional, provocative.

Rent them all.

JOSH

Josh opens the door beside the timeclock and is struck by the absoluteness of the black emptiness before him. Where there should have been a room, there was only a deep, gaping nothingness, lightless and soundless. Though he can not tell by any spatial relations how deep it goes, it appears endless and limitless.

Suddenly, there is a light, a tiny pinpoint of white against the obsidian silence, and it grows in dimension as it appears to approach. It appears suddenly like a movie screen. Reaching out, Josh hesitates, his hand hanging in the air as suddenly images appear on the whitness.

A home movie.

Josh watches. It's black and white with video from a hospital room. A nurse brings an infant to a woman in th ebed. The mother looks ill, haunted, with dark rings under her eyes, and sunken cheeks, but when the child in placed in her arms, she seems to brighten, and she stares down at it with adoration in her eyes.

A second nurse brings in a second infant and the mother holds them both, looking from one to the other with love. She leans back and closes her eyes. The nurses rush to the infants and take them, place them in carts. There is a flurry of activity and jostling of the camera, and when it stabilizes, when the camera is steady again, it is in time to watch a nurse draw a sheet over the body of the mother.

There is another scene playing as soon as the first ends. A father stands at two small graves that sit on each side of a larger one. The camera moves too quickly to read the name. Josh slams the door shut, confused and uncertain, and returns to the office/lounge.

DELILAH

The being who spit thick black acid does contain the keyring in it's slick decomposing cavity. The tire iron whistles though the air and connects, driving into the skull. The metal sinks in and sticks. As she tries to wrench it free, the keyring drops from the rotting chest. Delilah kicks the creature as she pulls the bar. the bar doesn't move.

Considering her options quickly, delilah would rather live than become a corpse herself. She releases her hold on the bar, grabs her things and the keyring and runs out of the lot, towards the street.

CHRIS

As he holds the iPod over the desk drawers for lighting, Chris finds a smallish wooden box with a small metal latch and a small lock, a flashlight, an invoice from the Silent Hill Flower shop, and apicture of a foxfaced teenager sitting on a snal headstone next to a larger one, with a smaller one beside it. She has wicked grin on her face, and there is black spray paint over the names on the headstones. There is can of spray paint on the ground.

In another drawer he finds a map of the town.

The creature is closer now, only a door away. Chris shoves his new things into his backpack and runs out of the Inn and up the street, and right into a tall slender woman with long dark hair.

Out of al the crappy selsctions, she was never so disappointed as now. The one time she had no use for black vynil platform pumps with an ankle strap, and she found them here.

"These are the freaking shoes of my dreams," she moaned, "Why the hell do i have to find them NOW???"

with a heavy sigh, she retuened them to the shelves, checkig out the bald guy every few moments. Rolling farther down the aisle, but closer to the chrome dome, she grabbed a pair of decent running shoes on sale. They seemed to have a decent tread and average workmanship, and it wasn't like she would be keeping them very long. And, as luck would have it, they were black.

"At least I wont have to recolor them with a sharpie marker," she chuckled, and made a loose knot of the laces. tying the shoe stogether. She hung them over her shoulder and rolled over to the guy.

She came up beside him and used her sexiest low whisper. "Hey baby, you need a good girl to make you feel bad? Or you need a bad girl to make you feel good?"

Subject: Evani

Once upon a time, there was a girl.

This was how her stories had begin, long ago, when she was younger and under the care of her family. It was always "Once upon a time," and "happily ever after," and these tales did nothing to prepare her for the truth, that life was unfair, unkind, and unwilling to make exceptions. THe world moved on, with or without the stories, and while something in her heart urged her to do the same, she could not.

This was the truth, that strangers come together and fall apart and come together again, that tides carry jope and destruction alike, that the world does not simply rearrange itself into order and reason. This was the truth, that the world was chaotic and unreasonable. What mad chaos into law and reason was people.

If she had not lost her own family, would she even bother with this task of saving others from losing theirs? If she were not damaged in some irrepairable way, would she have walked away?

Should she walk away now?

This was the truth: there was nowhere to go.

Evani sighed and fixed a polite smile to her lips. As of now, Septimus and Reckless discussed matters of the heart, and when the mercenary cast an offhand look in her direction, she smiled and gave him a small wave, a simple gesture designed to appeal to his silence. THough it seemed he was coming out of his shell a bit, and for that she was glad. Though every bit the opposite of Septimus, she could see in him kindness. She looked forward to spending more time with him.

When Septimus was silent, she approached, uneasy and feeling herself unkind. They could not fight so, if they were to survive this. And since he was too shy and petty, she had to be the one.

"You," she said quietly, her eyes fixed on his, "are an insufferable ass. And I love you. But you have to give me room to breath and time to feel without punishing me. So stop acting as if I've broken your heart when that was done far before me."

She paused, brushing hair form her face. Her smile returned, the true smile, the soft, glowing smile she reserved for only the special. "Yes, Septimus, I love you, and I would move the very heavens if the sun bothered you overmuch. So can we now tear down this wall of ice and fire between us? Please?"

CHRIS

Chris stabs into the dark, but hits nothing. The grinding of machina sends light vibrations through the floorboards. On the desk, the socket there the bulb was screwewd begins to spark.

Down the hall, the creature comes closer, now only two rooms away.

DELILAH

Delilah, at the fifth vehicle, has popped the trunk, revealing a crowbar and a roll of duct tape, which she appropriates. However, the time spent searching the vehicles has given the creatures time enough to come within six feet of her. The flesh at the crown of their heads splits and rolls down slowly, the celophane blisters and peels away in thin strips, birthing slick, wet misshapen torsos, their sides bulging and writhing where arms move trapped beneath the remains of their flesh.

The closest one throws its head back, releasing a hissing shriek and a stream of black brackish filth. The ground bubbles and hisses and smokes where the foul spray lands.

FOR CINDI

Behind the U shaped counter, Cindi has discovered a large can of hairspray and there is a keyring on a shoelace lanyard. The keyring holds six keys. Though none of them are very remarkable at all, they are smaller than average. She sees, on the lefthand shelves under the counter, a cardboard box of rubber squeaky toys, a careboard box of cat collars, various sizes and colors, with small bells on them. A plastic tupperware container of rotting food. A stack of CD jewelcases, all empty, no sleeves or liner notes. A box of flyers. A pencil. There is a notebook with a cut out collage of pictures from magazines, words from newsprints. There is writing inside. On the back are the words I TOLD YOU SO. There might be more info inside it.

There is a first aid kit in the center of the shelves. it is a red plastic lunchbox type container. There is a plastic tub of dog treats with a lid.

There is nothing else under the counter.

The register looks as if someone has tried to pry it open.

HENTIETTA

Hank stares down the demon dog as they circle each other warily. In the dark, other eyes gleam wickedly, watching.

JOSH

Remains in the quiet of the Flower Shop hallway, unaware of the hell outside.
