Subject: Mas'Riat

“Do I make myself clear, Lt Mas’Riat?” He asked and then drained the rest of his glass in one gulp as he waited for her answer.

Oh, she wondered, if he only knew.

"That ship is what's going to keep me alive. If that metal casket's going to keep me from going back to a Dominion prison, then you bet your furry..." she intoned, her voice dropping all softness, all charm. She was unable to hide the echo of her past, and she felt a haunted shudder pass through her. She pushed away the Dominion prison from memory, and focused her will on the present, the now.

"You won't have a thing to worry about," she added.

She chuckled, feeling the small, uncomfortable flow of truth to his words, and smirked.

"Well. That sounds... like a vacation." She brushed an unruly strand of hair from her eyes, watching the Lyran for any change, any darkening of mood or telling twitch.

"Any words of advice? Sage wisdom from the furries? Bits of irrelevant gossip for a new Starfleet vic- crewmember?"

"It's well with me," she murmured, looking over her route. The people she had come to think of as her own were used to seeing her out and about in the same areas.

What concerned her was that someone had to be organizing the creepy little animals, and it occurred to her that it could well be someone in town. Certainly there wer few people she did not know of, at least in passing or my reputation, but it was entitrely possible and every anenue had to be taken into consideration. And with her own route so central, and being familiar in town, it would raise little, if any, suspicion.

When she had a moment, she asked Selaro to take a walk with her later in the day, so they may get better acquainted.

Imperceptibly slight, barely noticeable, her eyes narrowed only minutely as she watched the words spill between her new companionable associates, as if they spoke in layered riddles of thing only they completely understood. And she took in theor words, filling various cubbies on her mind with what they said, in the desperate hope that one day it might help her ultimate goal of locating those reponsible her her current life.

She was, embarrased to admit that this Ben character intruiged her to no end, and equally amazed that she could find a government administrator so interesting, as she did with Shaben. Secrets indeed, she wondered, and resolved to find time at a safer junture to discuss.

The cleric spoke, offering her services, and Evani agreed that, should they indeed flee some strange and hidden danger, that a cleric would be the sort of useful that Evani herself wouldn't be.

"Yes, of course. Quite useful. But I think we would benefit from a vivid and well fortified discussion of when, exactly, we would make our way from this place. I'm thinking it's a talk that calls much ale. Hearty, generouas ale. Or fleeing, depending upon the time."

Evani smiled, her lips curling slightly into a sly smile of unknown intention.

"I would welcome a change of scene," she declared. "After all, what purpose has a bard if not to wander?"

Evani's olive shaded eyes passed over the members of the small group she had been invited to join, and for a moment longer than was perhaps appropriate to one in her position, she lingered overlong on the green-eyed man with the scar. There was something intruiging about him, something that stirred her, and it was with a guarded effort that she tore her eyes away.

Yet when he played, she could no longer see he tavern, no longer see the strangers she was with. Instead she saw the forest vale and the thick black smoke choking the night sky. Instead of Barker's voice, she heard the crackle and snap of dry wood ablaze, and hateful pop and hiss of the temple in the heat of the fire. The beams and walls shuddered and collapsed, sending billows of sparks upwards onlty to have them rain down upon the bodies lined at the outside of the flames.

His words evoked the loss she choked on, suffocating under its weight as she knelt by the bodies of those who had raised her since being discovered upon their doorstep. She saw so clearly, as if she was there again, the jagged gaping wounds at their throats, and shiddered with the desire to flee. Memory haunted her still, so many years later, of those she missed daily but had run from, in the end.

Evani smiled as the last strains of the lute faded away, and she collected herself at the approach of the gnome. But when Barker called her name, and asked her of the dreaded, magnificent pirate king, she looked at him again.

Oh, the tales she had heard of the brilliant, daring Septimus Sandalwood, a god among pirates and a terror on the high seas. As much as she loved the open road, to sail on a ship as Sandalwood had once done, may he be rested and blessed in the afterlife, that would be the highest of adventures of her.

"To be sure," she laughed lightly, "He was once the finest pirate ever to sail the seas. But I've heard he sails no more. Not in this life, leastways. Sadly, I never met him. Mayhaps I could share some of my tales with you some time?"

As the others converse and decide among themselves, she studies the map more. She pointed to various locations in town.

"I've lived here several years," she said. "I've no issues with taking guard at any of these locations. And I've no issue with whatever plan we go with. But for the sake of these people, whom I have come to think of as my own, let us decide soon."

Mas'Riat, she warned herself, keep cool...

But the playful fire in her eyes did not waver despite the cold steel shine.

"I killed a man to watch him die," she deadpanned, and waited several beats before the corner of her lips turned up in a tight, momentary smile. Would he believe her? Would he think it a joke? She sighed easily and took another few sips, draining her glass.

"I have," she whispered, her voice conspiratory in quietness, "the distinction of having flown a Dominion craft from the very darkness of Hell itself."

She allowed a moment for the full implication of those words to sink in, and she wanted to kick herself for offering up trust to a stranger so easily. And if i can pilot that, I can fly damn near anything. Now..."

She sat back and watched him carefully through narrowed eyes. "...why would Starfleet be so interested in that?"

Evanialaestra sighed contedtedly again, and considered that while one tavern was very mush like the next, she would always be amazed by the singe difference of each: the people.

It was one of them now, the people, sho threw her a light wink and invited her into their small gathering. Flashing a wide, bright smile, she tipped a thankful nod to the inviter and pushed off from the bar. Her lute twanged sweetly as she moved and crossed the room. She smiled to each and at a polite pause in conversation, when it was socially appropriate, she introduced herself.

"Evaniallaestra Alloranarra, " she announced, and laughingly, "Evani, if you like."

she looked to each for their intoductions to her, nodding with interest at each person's words.

Mas'Riat laughed, her soft low voice for a moment transformed before it left, a fleeting ghost of who she might have been. Yet her smile evened out, and once could see no malice or artifice within.

"Half, actually. But at least when I get wet, I don't smell like Cardassian foot fungus."

She sipped some more and set the glass down. AS ferocious as he may be, she had to admit he was also impressive. Others would have struck by now, but he had an impressive amount of self control. It helped that he was amusing.

Strategically, it made sense to ally herself with someone as imposing and as potentially violent. Though she knew Starfleet was a convoluted mess of mindless drones existing only to follow orders, she had to be ready. She had to have a plan.

Subject: Evani Arrives

Evani nearly wept for joy as she made her way through the town of Sundrash. Having been on the road for nearly a fortnight, she felt as dirt-crusted as her clothing, and as rank as seven day old porridge in the sun. Sore from sleeping on hard earth and weary from days of journeying, Evani found The Rest Inn and paid for two night's room and board. as she accepted her key, the inn keeper wrinkled his nose.

"Bath be up for ye soon, mum," he said. "Just leave those things you've on by the door."

"Thank you kindly," she smiled, a flash of even white against a face caked by travel. She knew she looked a fright. as she made her way along the hallways to her room, the lute strapped to her belongings twanged now and again. in her room, a small and uncomplicated affair, she set her things down beside the bed and stretched, rewarding herself with the various pops and snaps of bones settling back into rightful positions.

A bath was brought up for her and the maidservant dutifully turned away as Evani stripped the filth from her tall, slender frame, leaving her clothing in a pile as she stepped into the steaming tub. A long, relieved sigh escaped her, almost musical in tone, and she leay her head back, eyes closed.

The maidservant disappered, as did all trouble and worry. Time passed, as it always does and after a long rest in the water, Evani bathed peacefully and stepped out, wrapping herself in clean sheets set for her beside the tub.

She must have dozed, as there was a clean pair of leather leggings and white blouce. Her boots were clean, and her gunbelt and bandoliers laid out carefully and cleanly upon the bed. Dragging her fingers through her hair, she dropped the towel and dressed quickly. She fitted the belts and checked her pistol, and fitted her dagger on the inside of her boot and, now freshly scubbed, felt more presentable.

The need for companionship has long been a catalyst of important events, and Evani's need was not unusual. having had only herself to talk to, it would be a welcome change to converse with others whilst sipping something cool and wet. And, she had to admit, the chance to play for creatures other than birds and bunnies appealed to her. With her lute over her shoulder, Evani set off for the local tavern. If anything, she could always find some wizened old man and chat him up about the town.

She located the place easily and stopped in the doorway, savoring the familiar tavern scent, so alike from one to another. The smell of sweat and ale and secrecey and stategy and potential. Ah, the exhilirating scent of potential. She ordered an ale from the barkeep and leaned back against the long bar, enjoying the simple act of being.

Riva had ignored all resquests for more information about herself; in her mind, these questions had little enough to do with the situation at hand. Rather, Riva immersed herself in the plans unfolding before them all and felt the touch of destiny upon them all.

The attendant slipped the drink onto the tablle and hurried away without speaking, surely glad enough to get out of the way of what could have been abloody, if not unfomfortable situation. Mas'Riat took hold of the glass and sipped at it slowly, savoring the flavor on her tongue, and her lips curled into a sly smile. A delicate brow arched in amusement. She supposed it was in poor taste to be so amused by his frustration, but she could not help herself.

Setting the glass down, she sighed. "Flight Control."

She watched the words wash over him and waited for a reaction. After a long moment's pause, she leaned back in her seat and cracked her neck.

I am so sorry for your loss, Olan.

Like your, my Grandfather was a memver of the Navy in WWII. He was a cryptographer stationed in the South Pacific. His was a richly colored life that I knew little of until after his passing.

My heart goes out to you and your family.
