Topic: TPK as a Solution
Subject: ...

I guess TPK could be used as a demonstration, but I don't think that really solves anything. It seems to be more of a way to vent, then actually bring anything beneficial. I think what you do is the best solution, since it is a statement without being an unjust DM.

I think it is helpful to also try and get a couple players who will always be focused on trying to play. Having them help keep the party actually playing, and not just messing around.

I don't believe I have ever TPK'd a party... I've been part of 2 in the same session (which made me very sad) but I've managed to never TPK a party when I've dm'd. I would never purposefully do it just in spite.

Zilvra ate some food, and drank water, as the night progressed. From the looks of it, the book had little information of use. Glowering down her plate, she continued to eat. She would much rather be on the field, hunting the source of the undead, than sitting inside accomplishing nothing.

Later in the evening, Zilvra still waited, hoping something of note would be discovered. She rotated her empty mug in circles on the table, making a dragging noise as she did so. She'd never had this much free time in forever. "Does anyone have any cards or-" She began.

Suddenly, the door slammed open, and a guard stood soaked in the doorway. Immediately, pushed herself up from the chair she had been seated on. "Arvin, we need your group now! The undead are clawing at the gates!"

Not waiting for a response, Zilvra ran up the stairs. Her current armour would not be ample for a real fight. Dawning her armour quickly, but carefully doing up all the straps properly, she buckled her weapons on, and headed downstairs. Not waiting for anyone else, or taking the time to see if they were still there, Zilvra immediately dashed outside. She knew where the gate was, Arvin did not need to show her. Drawing her Falchion, she ran towards the gate. No undead was going to get through that gate while she still drew breath.

(OOC Zilvra puts on her banded mail, but does not do it hastily.)

Gyro once again was at an impasse. The heat signature seemed aware it was being watched. It stayed hidden. It must have had some way of either monitoring him, or the cameras. He continued to work his way through the battered computer system.

Gyro leaned forward in the chair. Did the heat signature just flicker? Droids were normally pretty constant... unless it was a gas expulsion from it's blaster? Did it reload? Pursing his lips, Gyro continued his work. He wanted to know what it was. "Please don't be a commando droid, please don't be a commando droid, please..." he murmured to himself anxiously, all the while keeping on typing.

Subject: RAIN OF DOOM!

Having barely finished her conversation with Delacard, a violent rainstorm suddenly ensued. It had taken mere seconds, and had made no warning beforehand. Grasping at her shield, Zilvra drew it to shield herself from the rain and water pelting at her. She lowered her visor, trying to minimize the amount of rain that poured on her face. Arvin said something about not being sick again. Shuddering at the thought of being really sick, at least, sicker than the paltry ailment she had beforehand, she quickened her pace.

Practically sprinting in the door when she arrived, Zilvra noted the water pouring off of her armour, taking some of the oil she had used to clean it down as well. That was going to be quite the mess later.

She walked up stair, and removed her full plate armour. Unfortunately, over her travels, she still only had one set of wearable clothes left. She muttered a curse, and pulled on her studded leather armour on. She'd still be soaking wet, but it would dry much faster under the leather than encompassing steel.

She strode back down the stairs, still dripping wet. The wet clothes she wore clung to her skin, and felt like ice. Taking the seat closest to the fire, she sat there, waiting for the warmth to dry her out. It wasn't the first time she miserably tried to dry out, she thought to herself as she stared into the fire. A year ago, she never would have found herself like this.

Smiling kindly, the dwarf replied, "Why, I come from jus' south o' here, from the dwarven mines. This's always been me area ta protect, though the news o' undead be news to me." Frowning slightly, a bit perplexed, he adds, "I actually be a bit surprised I ain't heard o' this before a group assembled... But I suppose I only been known to drive off the occasional goblin pack here'n there. And yerself, she-elf? A warrior no doubtin', but can't say I know o' yer kind... a darker breed, fer sure..."

"I meant no harm, Paladin Mackarrel," Zilvra responded. "From what I was aware, Paladins often are tasked for protecting certain areas. You must have had some reason to take the light to the darkness, no?" Pausing for a moment, she continued, "True, I am a darker breed of elf. I am a half Drow." Zilvra smiled, trying to mitigate the effects of admitting that. " Don't worry, I know nothing of my parents, save that one was Drow and one was human. I lack much of the vindictiveness of the Drow."

Delacard flinched slightly at the word 'Drow', but otherwise seemed uneffected, willing to take the woman's words at face value. Having heard the most common of tales, and little more, it was as if hearing someone was half orc. From his experience, half-breeds rarely acted as their pureblood stereo-types, at least when the type was notably evil. And he felt he could trust Zilvra, else she would not be here.

"I suppose the same as any true warrior of good, I wanted ta help people. Raised under the light of Tulis, protectin' the weak and smitin' the wicked be the values I known all me life. I'd meant to go out, to adventurin' and helpin' the world as a whole, but ne'er could I o' guessed the world was so big. I settled to stan'n help those in the lands me and me kin've called home fer so long, wagonin' me goods to help the poor'n sick as oft as I can, and crackin' goblin skulls wherever it be needed. Happy as I be to be fightin' true evil, can't says I e'er fought undead afore.... Still, I been trained fer this, an I be glad to put me hammer to real use." He admits, pleased for the company. Rarely did the Dwarf find himself in a position to talk about himself with anyone actually caring to hear it, and he found the words flowing through his lips as quickly as he could form them.

Zilvra chose to ignore Delacard's flinching when she told him she was half drow. It was nowhere near what other people had done when they had discovered it. "An honourable cause, Paladin Mackarrell. And the same with me. I have never encountered undead before. I'm sure it's nothing that your hammer, and my blade, " she gestured at the Falchion strapped to her back, "can't handle. I've fought plenty of bandits before, particularly the Grimm's. Have you come across them in your travels?"

The dwarf's hairy face crinkles at the mention of the Grimm's, for it was a name he knew well. "Only by reputation, and the carnage they have inflicted. Though I ne'er came across any o' em, I've had to help pick up the shattered pieces o' innocent lives a few times. Merciless.... It does this dwarf good to hear ye been responsible fer a few o' them monsters' deaths."

He looks at the ground at that, as if to ward off a painful memory before continuing, "Aye, I been wantin' a crack at them fer a while, but it be me place ta help others afore chasin' violence, and there be much sufferin' to aleviate in these lands. But perhaps after this exorcism, ye an' I can go'n shorten their numbers, eh?"

Zilvra smiled. "Yes, let's do that. I'm all for taking each and every one of them down. They have brought harm upon many, and must be stopped! I've had a couple of run ins with them, but have had no luck finding them. Perhaps, you'd have friends who might have some idea where they could be?"

The Dwarf considered this, tapping his fingers against his hammer's head for a moment before shrugging. "Many know of em, but few know where they hide... Still, I be sure we'll track em down easy enough, once we're free to." Nodding to his companion, his eyes turn forward again. "Still, we must survive this fight afore we get too excited. I jus be glad I met a like-minded person ta help. Ne'er would I o' guessed it'd be an elf, but I promise, it be no issue to me." he adds jokingly, his yellow teeth shining from his thick beard as he flashes a smile.

Chuckling slightly, Zilvra said in agreement, "Same could be said about you. But yes, let us find out what Arvin and that book have to say. Then, we purge this undead menace!"

Topic: Would like some ideas for a planar campaign
Subject: ...

I've never had a campaign get to a high enough level that adventurers got to the planes, but I'll give it a shot.

-A mage (friend of the party, or powerful enough to be worth looking for) of some sort was doing some sort of experiment, trying to tap in to the other planes to boost his power. In doing so, he(or she) was teleported into the planes. The party could try to find him.

-A city of mortals in one of the planes relies heavily on a multicomponent forcefield to prevent planar beings from entering the city. Recently, it has fallen into disarray, causing multiple attacks. The heroes could try to find the components to fix the forcefield, or find new parts entirely to rebuild it. This could be combined with a demon/devil lord of vindictive god trying to destroy the city, and build up their own power.

-There is a rising power somewhere in Amsodeus(I think that's what it's called). It is definitely evil, already sending raids into the mortal plane.

-There is a Celestial( or demonic) knight, who travels the planes finding worthy challengers. A party of heroes could work to find him, and have a worthy duellist challenge him.

Those are just a couple of ideas I can think of early in the morning. If you want, I can see about adding more tonight or tomorrow. Possibly add some magic items.

As soon as Zilvra had finished proclaiming her intent, others followed suit. The gnome in their group seemed a bit reluctant to engage in the endeavour, but even he quickly chose to join them. Apparently he was a cordwainer? Whatever that was. He seemed to have an interest in boots though. She glanced down at her banged up articulated steel boot. Those probably weren't what he was referring to. The next person who spoke up was a surprise.

"The Paladin of Creht, Delacard Mackarrel, the whispering Dwarf, and servant of Tulis, shall see these monsters destroyed, and this town safe!" He pronounced, pounding a plated fist against his chest. "And I be needin' no price fer it, mark me. Give me share to the others here, when we be finished."

Zilvra nearly spun around to look at Delacard. This dwarven man was a Paladin? That would definitely be some use against undead. But Tulis was a strange choice, at least from what she knew.

Zilvra was unable to ponder this much longer. Kestross was handed a book on the history of the town, with the mayor babbling on about a wizard founder, and was pushed out the door. Kestross' fumbling with the book and embarrassment was enough to draw her attention momentarily. She smiled a little bit. Helmet carried under her arm, Zilvra followed the mayor and Kestross.

Once outside, they were immediately greeted by Arvin. It was a bit creepy, but Zilvra doubted he'd do them any harm. He already had better opportunities to do so multiple times. They apparently were heading to the inn to get a drink and discuss their objectives? Sighing, Zilvra wished that they had been told that ahead of time, so they did not need to waste time discussing now. The town of Dalhurst didn't seem to be doing all that well. The sooner the undead riddance was removed, the better.

As Arvin began to show them back to the inn, Zilvra positioned herself beside Delacard. "A Paladin, eh? What brings you all the way up to here?" Zilvra asked as the walked back towards the inn.

A sudden racking of the door caused Zilvra to leap out of bed. Grabbing her Warhammer, she faced the wooden door. Had the bandits found her?

Shaking off the confusion brought on by sleep, she remembered. She was in Dalhurst, here to solve a problem. Coughing a bit, she remembered the events over the last couple of days. Perhaps she had slept too deeply. Well, at least Zilvra wasn't dead. She relaxed momentarily. This must have been the wake up call.

After taking a couple minutes to change into her heavier armour, Zilvra trudged down the stairs. They were each served free food. Had Arvin paid for this too? The man was generous. They must have really needed help if they were treating a group of adventurers and sell swords this well. Keeping her head down, Zilvra ate all the food on the plate. Nothing fancy, but it was much better than the trail rations she had been living on for months.

They were quickly ushered out of the inn, and to the Mayor's Office. Today was gloomy and dark, but not rainy. That was definitely nice. Zilvra walked determinedly towards the Mayor's Office, noting some villagers darting into their houses. Were they not the first to come here? Were they not seen as the good guys? The rest of the walk to the Office, Zilvra became completely focused in watching the villagers hide.

They entered the office, in it's complete disarray and glory. Zilvra hung around the back of the group, standing completely motionless at the back of the group, listening. Undead? She had heard stories of them, but had never actually encountered any herself. Whatever. It wasn't anything that her blade couldn't handle. It wasn't the undead that scared her, it was whatever caused them. The dead did not rise on their own.

As soon as the mayor finished speaking, Kestross immediately decided to help the mayor. Zilvra added, " I don't know about the other's here, but I swear my blade to purge this undead menace!" She folded her arms across her chest, and waited for the other's responses.

Zilvra scuffed her foot across the dirty floor. Not a great place to be, but it would have to do. She'd go to bed soon. But first, she'd get some food. And some drink. It might take her mind off of her current troubles. She lingered in her room a bit, cleaning her gear, then left to the ground floor.

Still armoured, Zilvra walked down the stairs. She took her helmet off, and waited to get some food and drink. She ordered an ale, and a meal, then sat alone at a table. She was there for nearly 20 minutes, before Pynn declared"Drinks are on the house tonight, courtesy of Arvin." Finishing her one drink, she quickly ordered another. It was nice to see that Arvin at least was taking care of them.

Arvin had came in, and told them to meet him the next morning. Zilvra stared down into her 3rd cup, still half full of ale. Perhaps it had not been such a good idea to drink this much. What wasn't Arvin telling them? Why was he staying elsewhere? These reasons were enough to get Zilvra to leave her half empty mug, and go back to her room.

Once there, she slid the chest in front of her door and locked it, barricading herself in; it wouldn't stop anyone determined, but it would buy her a couple of seconds. She changed into her lighter studder armour, and laid down on her bed. Though she had only been there a few moments, she quickly drifted off to sleep.

Zilvra did not like being kept in the dark. Several times, she had approached Arvin, and each time he gave the same response. Something was definitely strange here. She doubted this was a ploy for them to give him wealth. It didn't look like any of them had anything really anyway, except the dwarf. Alternating between riding on one of the carts and walking as they travelled, Zilvra felt unusually content on the third day. This was the first time in months that she had not felt like something had to be done. She was free to relax, even for a little bit. On the second day, when the animals rested, Zilvra took the opportunity to train. There was no point in letting the free time go to waste. Besides, she wanted to be in peak condition when she went after the bandits again.

The 4th day was definitely a mood changer. It went from pretty nice weather to a storm. Zilvra remained in the cart. It was too miserable outside, even for her to mope. When they stopped for the animals to rest on the 4th day, she still went out to train. Since she didn't want her steel armour to be battered by the elements, she instead wore her lighter studded leather armour. Once they began to move again, Zilvra sat inside the carts again, though now muddy, wet, cold, and miserable. Once again, she trained in the miserable weather on the 6th day, and once again, she received the same results.

On the 7th day, the began to approach the city. As they did so, Arvin said, "Now everyone be on your guard, we are not as safe as you'd like to think." Zilvra said nothing, instead drawing her Falchion, and walking outside of the carts as they neared the city.

The guard stopped them, seemingly completely against their entry. Surprisingly, Arvin easily persuaded the guard to let them in, completely changing his attitude. Zilvra's eye's narrowed something wasn't right. Falchion in hand, she entered the city, carefully examining the buildings around her to see if anything else seemed out of place.

Once they were well within the gates Arvin stopped everyone and brought them together. "Before I can explain what is happening here I must go find the mayor and tell him you are here to help. Meanwhile make your way to the Grey Leg Inn, tell them Arvin sent you and they will get you set up with room and board, and have somewhere safe your wagons and livestock my good Dwarf. Now be off with you, await me at the Inn and I'll return before sundown." At once Arvin turned and disappeared in to the town.

Zilvra watched the man leave, then proceeded to the Grey Leg inn. Going up the stairs, she chose the room near the end of the hall. Room number 14. She went back down the stairs, and got the key from Pynn when he came back. With Arvin's words in her head, she locked herself in the room, and began to search for anything suspicious.

(OOC: I have beginning of my post in a combination one with I-Binary. It should be on pretty quick. It was basically Kestross flirting with Zilvra, and her being completely unimpressed with it.)

Zilvra stormed through some small village, still covered in remnants from her last fight. Villagers quickly moved away from her as she pushed her way towards the inn, clutching her injured left arm. This time, she had failed. Next time, the bandit chief would not be so lucky. She would have his head rest atop a pike. She ran her hand across the hilt of her newly claimed Falchion, still slick from the fight. Yes, next time would be a different story.

Two guards approacher her, albeit hesitantly. Both had halberds and chainmail, bus seemed to lack the confidence to confront Zilvra. "Ma'am," one shakily but with determination, "I have to ask you to leave. You are causing unrest."

"I'm causing unrest!? There's a village burning bandit horde out there, and you are complaining about me!?" The guards said nothing, only leveling the points of their halberds in response." Fine, I'm going," Zilvra snarled glaring holes into the guards through the slit in her visor.

A couple of months later...

Zilvra spoke with guard captains, town criers, some shady street guys, anyone who might give her a hint of where the bandit chief hid. By now, her wounds had healed, and her angry outburst had sated, but nothing had happened to reduce her frustration. She spat on the ground in frustration as yet another search turned up empty.

She had made her way to the city of Agido, hoping for some evidence of where the bandits. Though there was nothing concrete to be found, she heard rumours of them being in a forest by the Creht Foothills. She left immediately after finding this, and began her trek towards the foot hills. On her way, she noticed an oddly persistent old man tailing her. 6 days he followed, and each night, she laid in bed with her Falchion set beside her, waiting for the man to come close.

On the 6th night, he finally approached. She noticed him, and stood facing him, holding her Falchion, waiting for him to start a fight.

However, he did not. He simply brought her a message.

"You have no reason to trust anything I say as I have been following you for no reason it would seem, but I ask that you listen to my request. I do not doubt that you have heard the rumours of Dalhurst. If you believe you can help those in need, meet me on the road to Dalhurst in five days time." With that, the man wandered down the road and disappeared in to the darkness.

She stood for about 30 minutes waiting for something else to happen. Nothing did. The man never came near her small encampment again. She recalled the memory from many months ago of Dechsand, and her not helping it. She could prevent those in need. Although, the bandits might be in the forest. Zilvra made up her mind. She would search through the forest for a couple of days, then get on the road to Dalhurst. After all, she had a couple of days to burn until then.

The search of the forest turned up nothing. Zilvra clenched her fist at the all too common occurrence. She might as well try to help Dalhurst. There might be coin in it to replenish her dwindling supply. Maybe it even had something to do with the bandits she was chasing. She smirked slightly. Yes, that would be perfect.

At the base of the Creht Mountains, in the Foothills on the mountain road, the six adventurers came together. The first to arrive was the Dwarf with his personal caravan of carts, oxen and mules in tow, loaded with everything needed to survive a trek in to the mountains. Next came the party of four, following the lead given by the Old man who joined them in the Inn. Finally came the Half-Blood, the last to join. As the six stood in the road, a familiar face came over the hill in front of them. Smiling, the elderly man stepped towards the group.

"Greetings my young companions. I am glad to see you all accepted my request. You all know the rumours of Dalhurst, and I can tell you now that something sinister is indeed at work. Today is the start of our journey to discover what has truly happened to the people of this town. We leave at once, as you can see our Dwarf friend here has all the necessary equipment for travel. We can get better acquainted with one another on the road."

The elderly man climbed up in to the back of one of the carts and called out to the assembled groups. "You may call me Arvin, now let us be off young ones. Dalhurst shan't wait forever!"

Zilvra stood silently among her possible new companions. It had seemed that she had not been the only one summoned. She shrugged. Whatever. This wouldn't be the first time she worked with others. Hopefully, these one's faired better than the others did. She paced behind the rest of the group, waiting for the old man to show up. She coughed slightly, and felt a warm liquid pool above her upper lip. She did not remove her helmet, tolerating the uncomfortable feeling for now.

And he did. He wasted no time in introducing themselves, and having them go. Apparently, this was an urgent thing. That was fine with Zilvra. The sooner that they completed this mission the better. She pulled herself up on one of the carts. Still saying nothing.

(OOC: Zilvra is 5'9, in battered banded mail armour. Her helmet completely obscures her face, though it is possible to see her grey/blue eyes if you look closely.)

Gathered in the cockpit, it was quickly decided that the party would go and investigate the signal Galactic north of them. Levince did not contribute his thoughts, merely listening in at the others, and preparing his weapons. Quickly, the ship jumped once again to it's new destination.

This jump took a similar amount of time as the last one, leaving the party another hour of boredom. Once they reached the system though, it was time to get on with their mission.

The system was nothing overly amazing. It had a small planet closest to it's star, a seemingly habitable planet, a small planetoid, which was barely worthy of the title, and a gas giant. The signal itself was emanating from the habitable planet. Upon closer inspection, it was from the planet's southern hemisphere. The planet had very small oceans in comparison to other planets: hey were little more than small lakes. Contrarily, the planet was covered in huge expanses of forests, despite the lack of visible water on the surface.

As the ship cleared the atmosphere, a thin layer of frost built up on the viewport, only to be removed by the ships automated responses. The southern hemisphere was undergoing it's winter season. A thin layer of snow coated the every green forest. Drunik and GeeDee were easily able to locate the signal. Landing, however, was a different story. The trees were dense, which made landing near the signal difficult, but not impossible. Additionally, there were clearings in the forest, which could make safe landing zones.

As the rest of the party decided on a landing zone, Valum felt a tremor in the force. Something... dark. There was definitely something dark nearby. Looking out the view ports, Valum noticed something amiss. Among a mountain range north of their position was a much larger, and darker coloured one. Valum was 100% positive that the dark energy was emanating from there. What it meant he was unsure, but that mountain was definitely housing something powerful and malicious.

(OOC: Kamina, you have the best luck ever. You got a natural 20 to find where the dark energy was coming from.)

Gyro glared at the console in frustration, nearly smashing his hands down upon it. Something was back there. He knew it. Was it a droid? A mercenary? Some Confederate Officer?

Gyro pondered momentarily about seeing the thing. What about breaking it's cover? Slowly, a smile crept across his face. What if he opened the hangar door? He was in the security room, he should have access to that.

Gyro quickly attempted to access the hangar blast shields and airlock. Sure, he'd open a route for the Separatists to get in. But it's not like they didn't already have access to that part of the base anyway. If all went well, the vacuum of space would pull the thing out, even if only enough to see. It might drag what remained of the ship out too, but that was of no concern to Gyro; it's not like him and Riggs together could fix that pile of scrap metal. Who knows, it might even draw some of the attention away from the base.

I'll throw my hat(helmet) in as a possible player. Labs seem to be winding down, so I will actually have free time. I'll contact you in a bit, once I come up with a character concept.

I believe there is, if you could jam it open, or use computer/ mechanics to. I think computer would be slightly faster, since you wouldn't have to open up the wall controls all the way.

I-Binary, a feat to consider would be the feat that allows you to build stable frag grenades from scrap in 3 seconds. Not trying to play your character for you, but it's a good feat, especially at this level. Best thing is, no check; it's an automatic success. Of course, if you don't want it, you don't have to take it! Just my two cents.

Don't worry about it. It took me three weeks to get a post up, so I'd be completely hypocritical if I chastised you about it.
