Subject: oh, A Merc, eh?

The Kiffar listened as the Scout informed Sargent Cam That the being earlier seen on the destroyed comm link was A Mercenary Commander, and a High level Imperial Target.
While not wishing to delay them moving out, and even starting to march himself, Sellikus asks off-handedly,
"So, Will tha' be meanin' I get a bonus if I kill him?"
He grins, drawing his pistols again as they prepared to move out, silently contemplating how he should have brought a rifle. But it was no matter. They were bond to come across this 'Deer-Kan' sooner or later, and when the time came, Sellikus would just have to take the shot.... Even if it meant taking the shot at the cost of a Trooper's life. They were, after all, only clones....

Kal'Ar shrugged with a growl. "Impossible to know for sure. But I do hope so. Every day that I am in this town, more and more of these fiends recognize me." He grumbles, smirking.
"Still, no point speculating. Come, I'll buy you a drink. I know I could use one to get me going this morning." He adds, moving towards the door with an inviting gesture.
However, he pauses, looking around. "I assume Nefrelle is on her way.... But luckily, I am easy to spot." He growls with a wink.

Hodges looked down at the fearful trooper, biting back his initial insulting reply. The man was scared, he understood. He needed to be patient. But this was a war zone now.
"Stop your sniveling, Trooper! We trained for this. You trained for this. And No, we wont make it out alive, unless you buck up and be ready to blast some gear-heads!" He growled at the clone, his venomous tone helping to back his own fear from his mind.
"The facts are these: We are under attack, heavily outnumbered, and un-able to contact back up. In all likelyhood, we are not long for this galaxy. But I'll be damned if I am gonna lie down and take it like a child! So check your ammo, and do what you were trained to do."

With that, Hodges looks back to the door, wondering how long it would be before it was blown apart, and the real fight began. In all honesty, he was of the same mind as the sniveling trooper. He didn't want to die. Not here, on some remote outpost. But this was happening, and there was nothing to change that now.
"We all have to die sometime..." He muttered, not even realizing he had spoken it aloud....

Desrik watched the short but fierce man as he executed the unconscious prisoner, raising an eyebrow. While the killing itself had not effected him, he had expected Bailox to at least say something about the cold-blooded slaying of an unarmed opponent.
Granted, said helpless man had only recently helped in the falling apon and slaying of several unarmed people, so morally, Desrik had nothing to say. Still... to think, one day he might have to face the half-man's wrath.
The mercenary shivered a bit. There was no way to know who would come out the victor... And that was more of a chance than he wanted to take.
Deciding to shift his thoughts to the matter of Ellice, focusing on the more immediate problem, he still decided that he would have to be prepared to even the playing field.
....Even meaning make sure he had the advantage, should the half-man ever decide that Desrik was no better than the dead man at his feet.
Speaking up for the first time in the past while, the lithe mercenary suddenly asks in a low voice, "Is there anyone I can owe a drink to in exchange for some healing? I seem to have gotten a scratch."
Smiling at his attempt at a joke, he tries to focus on not showing the weariness he felt from his wound.

Kal'Ar's eyes slowly opened as he felt a pounding in his head, drawing him out of his dreams of battle and victory, of the crowds cheering and whistling.....
The pounding was still there as he awoke, but only briefly before he heard the muffled voice of Nia outside his door. He missed what she said, but he doubted it was anything important, or she would have opened the door.

Slowly sitting up, tossing the blanket down the bed, he rubbed his eyes, shook his head and growled. He hated early mornings. Rising even slower, he steps into his crimson-dyed leather leggings, then his combat gloves, which he tended to wear everywhere. That done, he stretched a final time, and opened his door, starting his walk to the Tavern.

After several autographs, pictures, and hand shakes, all of which he had still never fully grown comfortable with, he finally arrived at his destination, spotting Nia immediately, leaned on the wall. Approaching, he bowed low in a jokingly sarcastic manner.

"Ah, I see our master Burglar is ahead of us again."

Rising with a grin, he asks, "So, I trust you slept well?"

Well, i suppose the first thing you would have learned about Kal'Ar is that he is quick to anger, and generally hostile when angered. However (Based on us all still working together for 6 months) He shows patience with his companions, and enjoys their company, having learned that they all possess abilities that contribute to the party in ways he cannot. However, he does have a bit of a warrior complex (While he respects other classes, a fighter always seems just a little bit more efficient to him.

Generally, Kal'Ar can seem boastful and proud, or even antagonistic, but it is simply his way, having spent a long time associating with other prideful, violent pit fighters.

Desrik remained standing over the fallen bandit, his head nearly severed. But it was not pride or happiness that filled him, but rather, anger. Anger at himself. Had his skills really declined to the point of being wounded by a common bandit? To requiring help from a magic user?
Before the Unity, this never would have happened. Desrik had always been proud, having less scars than most of his profession through his tactical swordplay and deft footwork.
So focused on self loathing was he, that he hardly noticed the battle reaching a decline, and Bailox and the small, belligerent fellow taking down and dragging back a prisoner. So focused on this was he that he didn't notice the strange events concerning the woman, Ellice, nor if the prisoners had even been successfully rescued.

It was only the out-cry of the captive thug that brought the lithe mercenary to his senses. After a glance around, he sheathed his long sword, seeing the battle was over. And with this realization, and subsiding of adrenaline, the pain in his leg throbbed with renewed pain.
Cursing quietly, he made his way, limping, to the two interrogators, remaining several feet back as he watched the interrogation. It was an interesting strategy, conducting the questioning with two people, but that wasn't what caught Desrik's attention.
The big man's truthfulness may have wrecked the whole thing. If this bandit was at all like Desrik, the promise of a quick death for cooperation would only drive him to hysterics, and possibly hostility.

Desrik considered this. Was that part of a truly moral man's honor code? Did people accuse him of being without honor because he was willing to lie, and knew how to do it well? Perhaps... And he had to admit, it felt unhonorable to kill the man he had when the man was blinded by magics. Yet if he were to do it again, he knew it would be the same.
Silently deciding to contemplate it later, perhaps over a pint and a bowl of stew, he focused on the others of the group. He had been wrong about the wizard. The man had shown courage, even if he didn't directly duel anyone. Desrik supposed there were many kinds of courage, even with lack of swordplay skills.
Looking to the half-breed, he also understood him more. A druid. Though mysterious by nature, The educated mercenary understood their basic roles in life, and now saw him as less a threat. After all, Desrik made no affronts against nature...

Finally, Desrik eyed the warriors next to him, big and small. Both fierce in battle, both morally sound, and both in the service of good. They were Desrik's biggest threat. However, the Mercenary still assumed Bailox was the most dangerous, and was glad he had had the chance to be friendly. He would keep the barbarian an ally if he could manage it.
The sight of the defeated gnoll only galvanized Desrik's decision. Still, first things first.....

Sitting down and propping his leg up a bit, he ripped a strip from his nationless tunic, and bound the wound. Though it would not help for long, it would slow the bleeding until he could get better help.

((Alright, im back, and just want to say im quite pleased with Tek's NPCing of Desrik. Thanks GM! ))

Desrik simply waited as the others spoke of their plan of attack, his thoughts still not organized as much as he would like. He simply leaned in the broken house, waiting for a plan to come to him. Likely a plan he wouldnt share with the party.

He did however, make one comment.
"Bailox, my friend. EVERY warrior is to be treated with honor, even if he himself possesses none. It is what makes men like you and me better than common brigands. We would do best to fight them on open ground, albeit the ground of our choosing."

He lowered himself to a sitting position, sword laid before him, ready to grasp, and watched the small rodent scamper away. He was beginning to understand this half breed a little more....

Desrik remained silent as Bailox gestured for him to follow as the big man tracked what he clarified as the marks where a body was drug, simply doing as he was bid.

The short walk and sudden appearence of the naked corpse that had been dropped in a ditch brought a bit of bile to his throat, though he didn't know why. Honestly, he would have done much the same, but that the body would have been left where it fell. Perhaps it was simply that they had dishonored their prey so by placing it in a ditch with no sort of respect or honor. They had simply discarded the man like trash, taking even his clothes, which the mercenary could only assume weren't more than tattered wool.

Bailox also seemed quite angry, though likely for far simpler reasons. The man had honor that could humble many. Much different than Desrik. Bailox's honor extended to even the things no one would ever know about.
The young sell sword couldn't understand why. What reward would there be for burying the man, short of not having to look at it anymore?

But Desrik said nothing, just helping his friend bury the corpse and following him back to the group to rally the others. It seemed Bailox had found tracks. Finally!

........

Once the group was prepared, Desrik moved with Bailox. Normally, he would have attempted to lead, but it was clear to him that he wasn't the 'figurehead' of this group. And if he wouldn't be seen as the leader, he would do what he could to make Bailox so. Best to have an ally for the top dog.

The half-breed began some sort of chanting, sprinkling dirt on the fresh grave. What was that about? Likely just a point-ear superstition. The lot of them were nuts.
Still, the wizard wasnt so bad. For a point-ear...
Rolling his eyes when no one was looking, he removed his hat, holding it respectfully to his chest while the half-breed finished his little ceremony.

Once done, Desrik stepped forward. Speaking to the whole group, though his eyes remained on Ellice.

"These deaths are wrong, done through greed. And while my heart is sad for your loss, my dear, and my best wishes with you, we cannot remain for a true burial ceremony. Every moment we waste here is a moment less your daughter has, if she still lives..." He paused, watching her, but gauging ALL reactions. He had to know where his companions stood with this. He had given such speeches before, learning the jist from the many funerals he had attended, gazing apon the remaining family of his victims. Oh, the profitable days when he could kill a man, then offer his services to the family to catch the killer. No one had ever noticed a begger go missing every now and then.

Desrik shakes his head, returning to the events at hand.

"It... may be best if you return to the village now, and await our return. The carnage that is to come is no place for one in your state, nor for one who cannot use a blade.... Go back, seek out Molly. She will have a room for you, on my coin." He bids her, wanting her to leave. He knew it was only a matter of time before everyone here began to see him for what he was. Everyone did, eventually. But Ellice still had rewards for a good mercenary that got her daughter back to her. And all the more if he could embellish the story.....

Hodges just watched as the fleeing clones stumbled through, the blast door slamming behind them. He barely heard the plea for the medic, his eyes frozen to the blast door, as if expecting a full battalion to charge through.

"Soldier!" He yelled to one of the unwounded clones that had just escaped. "How many are we facing? How much resistance?"

Desrik remained silent even as the time passed, walking quietly with the rest of the party, still deep in thought, his merry mood long extinguished at this point to be replaced with the dull buzz of the fading liquor.

Only when they came to the sight of the carnage did the small Mercenary's eyes light up a bit. The sight, which seemed to enrage his large friend, only brought a feeling of remembrance to the boyish-faced man. Almost as if the caress of a long lost lover, he felt more at home as the smell of blood met his nose, the crimson staining the grass more comforting than anything he could recall. The only bit that bothered Desrik was the lack of honor...

These men had been unarmed. Unable to fight back.
Desrik had killed the unarmed, the innocent in his past. And likely for the same reason as these bandits. Palts.
But if there was one thing a Mercenary knew, it was that while he may have just as likely ended up with the bandits, had they hired him first, he was in fact, on the opposite side of the board.
Silently, he sort of hoped the men got away, and got their coin. Because if they hadn't, the war-hardened man would end them without hesitation, and take their money for himself.....

Silently, he watched the woman, whose name he had already forgotten, as she began falling into her sorrow again. Watched Bailox begin searching the ground.

Drawing his sword and leaning it on his shoulder, Desrik remains where he stands, waiting.

"Think we're gonna get through this Hodges? Be pretty sad if we couldn't take on a few enemies right?" Batter asked behind Hodges as he crept forward, following with a nervous laugh that seemed to echo down the hall.
Looking over his shoulder to respond, he feels someone collide with him, causing the tense trooper to curse loudly as he lands on Batter.

Suddenly, just down the hall, something began pounding on the door. "open up! we have wounded! hurry before the clankers get us!!" a distant clone's voice called, causing them all to begin moving, just as Riggs exclaimed, "Clankers!? Here!? Hurry up and open that door for them!"

Hodges saw Gyro already making for the door and, kicking and shoving, climbed to his feet, rifle raised to kill anything not in white armor that might come through the door, quickly advancing until he was between his fallen brothers, and Gyro. He nods.

"Open 'er up, I'm kriffing ready for em..."

Sellikus stands, holstering his blaster, then sheathing his knife. "We'll not be needing one o' these scum slowing us down." He says casually in his hard-to-understand accent. Adding a final boot to the corpse's jaw for good measure, he approaches Sargent Cam, a slight smirk on his face.

"As leader of our company, only you can give the orders... But the sooner we go, the better. If they need reinforcements, every second here, more of your men die."
He looks around at the others, not sure how they themselves weren't dead yet...

Near the front of the small gathering, wearing a look of eager excitement was a tall, broad man wearing rather plain studded leather, and a hammer strapped to his back. He had all the appearence of a warrior, but that the symbol of Toft, the Dwarven God of Luck and chance, adorned his Hammer, and the holy symbol around his neck. He had recieved the summons, and had seen the opportunity to take many chances, and better serve his god.
Brushing a few strands of his shoulder-length orange hair from his bearded face, he grins, but remains silent. He would go wherever the party decided, as it made it all the more random. And he didn't bother introducing himself to anyone, as there would be plenty of time for that in the coming days. For now, the large, easy going man only considered the many great adventures to be had, and all the possible wealth it would bring to his faith. Toft would be pleased with him.....

"I am no mechanic. We need to go keep our brothers' covered." He states, moving to follow out the door at a slow, but steady advance, rifle raised and ready to blast anything that wasnt in trooper armor.
In the back of his mind, he knew that their only real chance was to get to a ship, but he would keep quiet about that for now. Briefly, his eyes look down the route that would take him to the hanger bay, then shakes his head. He was a Republic Trooper. He would not flee until their mission was complete....

He shakes his head, clearing the fear and throwing it to the back of his mind, finishing strapping on his armor and putting his bucket on, then raising his rifle. "We need to get someone on the line. The Republic needs to know. Are out long-range comms still working?"

He watches the doors apprehensively, rifle raised, expecting their killers to come charging through like wild gundarks any moment now....

Toft works in many ways, through many people. And as a servant of chance, Bartimeus is down to go wherever is decided, and will meet whatever fate it presents.

As for other nations not wanting us taking their hidden loot, it would be easy enough to pose as mercenaries. Generally accepted to an extent in any nation. Not like we have to be honest as to why we are there, so long as we arent putting anyone else in danger.
