Simon smiled to himself. That felt just as good as he'd thought it would. Better, even. You just couldn't go after your everyday stinging critters with a power rod.

He'd finally given up on that one.

But here was a target he could be more forceful with. He checked over his new team, then loosed another blast.

(((OOC: Same as before, only aiming at the beastie that stung Gelion. If Gelion manages to kill it first, he will aim at the nearest one instead, with an emphasis on aiding teammates. Ranged tough attack with Power Staff of Fire. +2 modifier to hit. 1d6+7 damage.)))

(((Edit: Should be +4 to hit. I forgot that Red Mages get the Precise Shot feat on ranged touch attacks.)))

....yeah, I changed my mind.

For basically the in game stated reasons, minus the fluff.

Subject: I am reviewing, the situation......

As was his habit, Tristan pulled his hat down over his face as he listened to the response of the group. All the better to conceal amusement, or indecision. His thoughts wandered, as they elaborated, back to last night's fight. It had been quite awhile since he'd brushed that close to death. He was grateful, as he rarely was, for the divine power he was able to call upon at times.

Lifting his free hand, he palmed the silver figure he wore. The loaded die. It embodied the con, the job, the lifestyle he loved. Always playing the odds, while doing everything you could to skew them in your favor. And yet....

What had drawn him to it, what kept him there, what connected him to the deity he only occasionally remembered to pay lip service to, was the gamble. The test of raw luck, just to see what would happen.

The mood slowly overtook him, as it often did. He'd been playing it too safe. There was rather a lot of ground between playing paladin and not playing at all. A nice middle ground is what he needed, and what he preferred.

Tristan smiled to himself under his cap. If the elf could be mercurial, why couldn't he? It was going to be worth it just to see their reactions when he he was done talking again. He'd have to make sure to pay attention. Perhaps they'd take it in stride. Hopefully they'd be surprised. With some luck, he might even get one flabbergasted.

Pulling his hat back up as Sehanine finished her (admittedly interesting) proposal, Tristan spoke again, nodding at Calopee as he did so. "On the other hand, we have little in the way of prospects. We've no contacts, moderate skill, only one lead, minimal reputation, and that only locally. Lucrative jobs don't just roll down from the mountains."

He slowly looked around, a mischievous grin spreading as he continued. "That one lead though. This Jaron apparently leads a number of men. His influence may perhaps be felt in a number of villages and towns near by, and if he leads a crew of bandits, he is certainly possesses some sort of fortune." Tristan grinned wider, unable to resist. "A fortune I'd favor more if it were ours. Clearing out a bandit lord, why, that's just the sort of reputation boost a group like ours desperately needs. And as for this 'death glare' I spoke of..." He shook his head, a look of distaste plain on his features. "Remember how very reliable the good townsfolk were when informing us of those sand-dwelling followers of Sartyria? No, I don't think stray rumors around this particular town should be so quick to scare us off of such a grand opportunity."

Speech made, he once again waited for reactions.

I say we head for Cordova. Sure to be work there, and people to pay to do it. I will probably post this in character a bit later.

Any other schools of thought?

There had been a time in his life where he'd been horribly affected by bees and such. Not frightened, per se, so much as disgusted, and a bit unsetttled.

At least, he thought there was. He could never remember.

Still he thought he must have been. The feeling of catharsis brought on by killing such things was very real. And that was just the garden variety, so to speak.

Simon actually smiled in anticipation at how he might feel at the end of this particular job.

Lifting the staff and mururing under his breath he fired.

(((Ranged tough attack with Power Staff of Fire. +2 modifier to hit. 1d6+7 damage.)))

Simon half listened as the others said their piece and began filing out. With a twitch of his fingers and a murmur, he checked the armband for... less visible additions, but it was as it seemed. A simple piece of cloth.

He slipped it over his bicep, quite aware of his paranoia, but comfortable with it. It had served him well over the years. Mostly.

Withdrawing his rod, he set out after his companions. If a lumberjack needed an exterminator, they were about to get one.

Simon couldn't help the sigh that escaped him as he processed that thought.

I'm swamped with work this particular weekend. If you're so close to starting, by all means, don't delay on my account, as I cannot promise how long it would take me to create the character. I can join later, or just be happy reading the game.

I'd love to play, and can guaranteea post a week mostly, but the next day or two is just kinda murky for me right now. Apologies.

Anyone need anything from my character? Simon isn't going to be doing much interacting with the 'boss' nearby. Hope to get to know you all better soon.

'At least they seem to know what they're about.'

Such was Simon's reaction to his companion's questions after their employer's speech. Good, practical questions. Little bravado or swagger. Just wanting information to get the job done. Even if, in this case, the job was deciding whether or not to take the job.

He regarded the newest addition to their merry little band. Silvira Rundir Ronso, if you please, and by the look of it itching to start trouble. Well meaning trouble, Simon imagined, but trouble nonetheless. He smiled briefly. Should be interesting to see, and he'd yet to meet the Ronso that couldn't contribute something useful to the group. No complaints there.

His gaze drifted back to the man of the hour, Echario le'Rouge. He didn't buy it, not one bit. Only fools and idealists believed they could accomplish something like this. Or rather, that such a thing was possible. Any piece could leave the game, especially one as powerful as this man was purported to be. One did not accomplish this, however, by gathering others of power into a group under one's command. If nothing else, it would make you a target, which again, anyone who wasn't a fool or idealist should realize.

The man was rumored to be too experieced for this kind of blind idealism, and was too alive to be this much a fool. Simon spent a brief moment wondering as to the man's true motives, and whether or not it was all in his own head.

He smiled to himself. Why not try the direct route? It surprised people to no end. And whether Simon's mental meanderings where just his imagination, or something more accurate, le'Rouche's reaction would tell him something of the man, even if it was only how he handled idiotic questions. Learning something of someone was almost never a waste of time.

Waiting for the initial questions to die out, Simon slipped his into the silence before an answer could be given. "What, pray tell, is the purpose of the Crimson Falcons? It is all well and good to remove ourselves from the board, but without a more tangible goal to strive towards, I fear our endeavors may be doomed to failure. Could you tell us what that goal is?"

It was with a small, but genuine laugh that Simon replied to the woodsman. "I assure you, Greyflood, that darkness is not what shrouds my past." He again surveyed his companions, nodding at each. "I suppose its nice to meet you, or it has been so far. As to your question," Simon elaborated, turning to face Gelion again, "I know nothing more than his reputation, and that could be learned at any tavern from here to yon."

Simon stopped speaking long enough to drink, then continued. "I was actually contemplating that very thing. I am looking forward to actually meeting our illustriouis employer, and discovering where the rumors exaggerated, and where they fell short of reality."

He then added, almost as an afterthought, "Oh, and I am called Simon."

Simon honestly couldn't decide if somebody was trying too hard, or not hard enough. True enough, a big name like Echario le'Roughe didn't need to impress the rabble he was recruiting from, but the effort was so token, so devoid of subtlety, that it was almost offensive.

Or it would be, if most of the people being shuttled in and out of these rooms weren't as dense as the table they would be seated at. He turned his gaze towards his (for the moment) companions and took stock.

One Hume, rugged look, medium build. Clearly an outdoorsman.

Another Hume, fairly nondescript. Almost unremarkable, save for the sprite that followed him around like a little lost chicobo.

One humanoid. Al Bhed, by the smell of machine oil about them. Possibly a mechanic. Possibly just an Al Bhed.

First impressions: None were obviously stricken dumb, or overwhelmed. None were obviously pretentious and aloof. None were overtly nervous or indecisive.

None were moving or speaking yet either, presumably taking a moment, as he did, to take stock of the situation, and the others with them.

Useless, easy observations, but ones that ever so slightly improved Simon's attitude towards this whole thing. At first glance, the group appeared to be at least competent, and thats all he asked for from others.

Bringing his rambling thoughts to their conclusion, Simon moved to the pantry, finding for himself a small supply of nuts and water, then seated himself at the middle of the table, on the north side. He always felt more comfortable with his back to a wall, though he couldn't quite remember why.

He shrugged, and began the process of waiting. If there was to be smalltalk, he would participate, but he had no intention of starting conversation himself. Simon preferred to spend the time contemplating what he knew of their host. He was very curious to what le'Rouge would be like in person; whether his reputation was deserved. Something about the man, and the mental image his name provoked, was familiar.

Not that that helped. Everything was familiar.

(((OOC: Ok, done what I can with what I assume to be general knowledge any person might have, and the one line descpriptions in the Q&A thread. If I've inadvertantly stepped on toes, please let me know so I can edit my post. However, keep in mind that so far, its all in Simon's head, and he's aware its mostly baseless conjecture and could be very wrong.)))
