Relos forward sounds good to me, perhaps with Mal and Tristan flanking him? Calopee has expressed interest in hiding, and is good at it. I would not atempt to guess what Sehanine would prefer to do.

Does anybody else get chills when Grugg says 'fun parts'?

Jozan makes a good point. I had made the assumption they would at least come to the house..... but if there is no sign of people, they may ride on... if the there is a sign, they may do something drastic, like burn the crops, and then ride on.

Perhaps we actually do need to confront them then. Thoughts?

Watching out the window is a good idea.

I vote for extinguishing the fire, concealing ourselves, and seeing how the riders react to an apparently empty house.

Anyone else think maybe there's a better plan than fighting these guys?

We just seem a little triggerhappy. Minus the triggers.

And the happy.

I'm against an ambush. We don't have enough information. Will it just be a few, like when Isiah is threatened? Or a group to make a point if they expect a refusal? From which direction do they come? Multiple?

The same problems apply to parley.... we just look slightly less foolish if that goes wrong.

And image counts for Fortune's Favored.

I don't know how much of a possibility it actually is, but its occurred to me.

There is probably a better plan though... I'm of a mind to send the family into town, perhaps under the guise of leaving, and seeing how our opposition reacts.

Pressing the good farmer for more information yielded nothing. Tristan wasn't surprised, though he had agreed with the elf's need to check. She seemed unusually paranoid about the man... Given what Tristan knew of her, perhaps he too should be more skeptical, but at the moment he couldn't find it in himself to care.

After a brief silence on the walk back to town, Tristan glanced at his travelling companion, smirk firmly affixed to his lips. "I'm undecided as to who is going to be more fun: Relos or Malevolent Mal."

A sly glance and a coy smile accompanied Sehanine's reply. "Why Tristan, darling, it'll be the holy buffoon of course. All that purity..."

His smirk widened as he thought back to Relos's eagerness to help. "Purity indeed. And yet self-delusion can create just as many opportunities with much less work."

Another smile, this one almost predatory. "Yes, it can, and he's quite full of it. Perhaps it will be a game of purity and delusion. Which one shall claim its sinner first?"

Tristan glanced over, amusement written all over his face. "I'd say whichever of them tries to confront us first.... unless Mad Mal slips again like he did this morning..."

From the way she smiled and laughed, another person would have thought she hadn't a care about the situation. But Tristan knew her well enough to hear the promise of pain in the sound. "Then we leave it to the fates perhaps?" She pauses and smiles. "Although the Argent Ass is dreadfully close to the cliff. Just a little push and he'll fall. It would be such a tragedy."

"Now, now. No plotting against fellow Guild members." It took a good deal of the man's considerable control to keep a straight face as he said it. "Not until we have more of them anyway."

The reply was fast and seemingly careless. "Plotting against one of our honored crew? I would never do such a thing."

Thought turned to the remaining member of their hodgepodge group. "And what of the delightfully sharp Calopee, of goat pen fame?"

A more genuine smile came across Sehanine's features. For anyone who knew her, it was very possibly the most frightening expression she could wear. "That little one has potential. I want to keep her."

Tristan paused once more, weighing his next words, and her probable reaction. He could never quite predict her, but he judged the first part would go over well enough. It needed to be stated anyway.

"You know, if this whole group is going to work, it's going to come down to you and I to make it so."

A knowing, almost mournful look flashed through her eyes. If he hadn't already been looking, Tristan would have missed it entirely. "On that, you are surely right."

Tristan slowed his step, his customary smirk falling from his face, and even lowered his voice. "You know I love our little.... games.... but this is a once in a lifetime chance. Even one of Discq's Favored won't gamble those odds." He lowered his voice further. "The matter of my master's bracers needn't be dropped, nor settled here. But it cannot endanger Fortune's Favored."

Sehanine, who had slowed her pace to match his, glanced up at the taller man. Dropping a slender hand to caress the bracer strapped to his forarm, she replied in the same low tone. "The matter is long from settled, child of man. But it will not crumble our little pack of heroes." She paused, and her mercurial expression became a solmn gaze, one of ancient calm. "On that, Tristan Brice, you have my word."

All at once, the light was back in Tristan's eyes, and the spring returned to hes step. With a returning smirk he answered, "Glad to hear it. Though I wonder what the word of a Trickster can be worth, being one myself."

Just as quickly, the seriousness flooded out of Sehanine as well. "Very little I suppose."

The gleam in his eye turning wicked, he picked up his pace a further step, saying over his shoulder, "I must say though, I look with much regret upon your hair. Whyever did you drop this morning's.... bold.... style?"

With an air of superiority, she replied as she again matched his pace. "The world was not ready for such a style. Besides, it doesn't go well with lemons. Are you fond of lemons, Tristan? I hear they help with potency?"

Ouch. Kid gloves right off then. All smiles, he quickly counterd. "I wouldn't know about that, though the taste leaves something to be desired. I'd almost rather run my tongue along a dingy, ale stained, and for that matter, other stained bar-top. Almost."

The elf's voice was scathing as she returned, "I'm sure that can be arranged."

This drew out Tristan's first laugh during the short journey. "One of my foremost policies, dearest Sehanine, is to learn from other's mistakes, as well as my own."

Sehanine did not speak to him again until they reached the town proper.

Subject: The Day That Just Kept Souring.

It was while stretching out front of the Bearded Dragon, scraping his tongue against his teeth repeatedly to try and lose the unwanted citrus-y tang that now clung to it, that Tristan decided he needed to put more effort into learning spells to help with pranks like this. He was left with no immediate response. He shrugged it off as he straightened out. Point to the she-elf, but he'd take the next round.

He was caught off guard by the arcane clean-up, and tipped his hat at Sehanine when she came out of the building. No reason to be rude after all. Smiling, he followed the group towards the farm, content to walk at the back and watch everyone. He was still trying to get a real feel for the others, something he felt would be important if the group was going to stay together as long as he wanted it to.

Tristan furroughed his brow some as he took note of the horse tracks about the farm. He was no expert, but it seemed like a lot of traffic for place like this....

His thoughts on the matter were soon pushed aside at the revelation of the groups next mighty challenge: Isiah's two sons. He had nothing against children to be sure: some of the best tricks in all the world came from the mind of a child; by the same token though, they also had an uncanny knack for seeing through horsedung, and finding just the right question that would make the whole thing fall apart. He smiled anyway and chatted with them awhiel. Good couple of boys, he supposed.

Afterward, he listened intently as Isiah described the man (on horseback!) who'd threatened him. Desert people was vague, and rang no bells with him, but if they were recognizable on sight, perhaps somebody around here would know something of use.....

He leaned back, hands behind his head looking thoughtful as the rest of the group started to weigh in. The paladin wants to jump in feet first. Surprise, surprise. Not that Tristan was opposed to taking the job, quite the contrary. It was the stereotypical response that him a bit on edge. I'm all for gambling, but one should make sure whenever possible the game's not rigged.... Calopee seemed much more level headed about the whole thing.

He fought a grin as Argy chimed in. Second verse, same as the first. Different reasoning, he was sure, but the end result was the same. He and Relos would either end up best friends, or killing each other. Should be entertaining either way. He pulled his hat down over his face to hide his amusement.

It turned out to be a good thing he did, because at that moment the fool blurted out their biggest secret. Tristan was confident in his poker face, but he wasn't sure he'd have been able to keep the shock off of his face.

He had just finished composing a reply to start repairing the damage with he heard Calopee chime in again. Bless that halfling! He pulled his hat back up as she turned it around on him smooth as the stones she carried. Tristan admired that kind of skill at lying, especially in a tight spot.

Mal took exception to the turnabout, though whether it was because of the implied insult or the realization of his slip, Tristan didn't know. Tristan looked on, amazed, as he started a monologue. Is this guy for real?

The Masked Moron's reply seemed to have touched on one of the halfling's nerve, who spat words back with more venom than she ever had in the short time Tristan had known her. Daddy issues? He mentally shrugged. None of my business, but make a note not to push the same button.

Malachai began spewing again, but this time something made Tristan sit up and take notice.

He killed his teacher? Who was also his father? Tristan didn't know if he believed it, but it would be awhile longer before he put any trust in Mal, he was certain of that.

As the little confrontation wound down, Tristan (inbetween rolling his eyes at the melodrama) considered what had been said. Cover up, sure. But there was a small amount of truth to every lie; the trick was in finding it. The verbal 'combatants' might have revealed more than they thought.

Looking around, and finally catching a pause in the conversation, he put forth his copper bit. "Mostly I agree. Hopefully, the force of our reputation will sort this out. But people who are willing to go so far to force Isiah out may require a rather...... harder talking to than usual. I believe we should gather what knowledge and resources we can, and meet back here an hour or two before nightfall to share what we've learned."

He turned and looked expectantly at Sehanine. If he'd missed something obvious, she'd point it out. It was a useful thing, even if it occasionally ended in his bruised ego.

This was not the first time Tristan's head had exploded. It didn't happen so often as to turn him into a bad sideshow, but it had happened enough times to develop the List. He went over it in what was left of his mind.

Bracers? Check
Weapon? Check
Hat? Check
Bracers?? Check
Clothes? Check
Bag? check
Bracers?!? ......Check

Satisfied with both his inventory and priorities, he decided to open up the eyes which had just reformed.

Though he knew it to be a uselss gesture, he could not stop his hand from flying to his head as the light slipped through his now squinting eyes and began stamping on his brand-new pain-centers. Shaking his head slowly, he took stock once more. List complete. Sore back, arm asleep and.... dangling? Yes, upon closer inspection, his left arm and leg were hanging several feet off the ground, with the rest of him (thankfully still attached) slightly higher up and resting on.... something.

The awning. How in Discq's name.... Managing a small smile at the absurdity of it, he began the laborious task of easing himself down. Began, but did not finish, as his only-just-rebuilt brain hadn't quite figured out motor controls, and so he found himself tumbling off and down the six or so feet to the ground. Lying there, sprawled on his back in the morning light, Tristan couldn't help but laugh softly. He was a great fan of trickery, and he had tricked himself good, it seemed, intentionally or otherwise.

Standing slowly as he pulled himself together, he looked around to find the others doing the same. The other human and the half-elf seemed to be having a hangover bonding moment; many lasting friendships had started thus. The halfling seemed to be staggering out of the goat pen, of all places. He would have to try and get that story at some point....

And out the door came the she-elf herself. Tristan couldn't help but smirk at her bedraggled appearance, though he suspected she'd had no more part of a bed last night than he had. Sehanine, my dear, you'll not hear the end of this for awhile. Unconciously checking his bracers oncemore at the sight of her, he entered the Inn after the entirely too smug keeper, having started and stopped listening at the offer of food.

With a nod of thanks, he began wolfing down the breakfast sat in front of him. It wasn't city-fare, nor did it have that down-home feel you got at a lot of farmer's houses. Wasn't terrible though. He listened with half an ear as Argos mentioned their drunken promises to a local farmer. Probably nothing better than killing cellar rats had been, but it wasn't like he had anything else to do. Besides, it wouldn't do for the Hero's of Schell to seem ungrateful for the hospitality.

The thought brought another smirk to the trickster's lips. This was the best con he'd ever run, bar none. He planned to enjoy it while it lasted. Straightening his hat, and tipping it towards a smiling innkeeper, he walked out the door. He'd work out the kinks and wait for the others outside. And he'd have to compose a few remarks on Sehanine's chosen hairstyle......

Topic: New Prestige Class
Subject: New Prestige Class

Blame Grugg and Shield Wolf for this. ESPECIALLY Shield Wolf.

(This should be obvious, but do NOT take seriously.)

Beard Master

Prerequisites: Worn a beard for at least 1/3 of their life. Has never voluntarily shaved their beard. Keeps beard maintained, though not neccessarily orderly, whenever possible.

The Beard Master can come from any walk of life. The Way of the Beard turns away no race, class, or alignment. Any person that begins to realize true nature of the Beard can become a Beard Master.

Adventures: Most Beard Masters started out as adventureres, and continue on after joining the Bearded Order. Those who weren't often take up adventuring, seeking life experience to further their walk along The Way of the Beard.

Characteristics: A Beard Master's most important anything is thier Beard. It is ALWAYS applicable.

Alignment: Previous alignments do not matter. Upon gaining first level, Beard Masters become Beard Aligned on the law axis. Beard Masters may be Bearded Good, Bearded Neutral, or Bearded Evil.

Religion: Beard Masters have no universal religion. The way of the Beard is philosophical and spiritual, not divine. This does not preclude the possibility of divine beards.

Races: Any race that can meet the prerequisites can become a Beard Master

Other Classes: Beard Masters are treated indifferently by all classes except clerics, who believe them heathens and blasphemers. An individual cleric and beard master may still be able to work together.

Role in Combat: In combat, the Beard Master is primarily a primary combatant, their Beard abilities granting them superior bonuses at higher levels.

Skill Points/Level: 4 + BEARD modifier

Hd: d8 + BEARD modifier.

Class features

Way of the Beard: Beard Master's work their whole life to gain understanding of the path they have chosen. As they progress along the Way of the Beard, their further understanding of that path unlocks new abilities within them. An acolyte gains the Bearded alignment, as well as first stage beard weapons. Acolytes also gain an invisible stat, with a modifier of 1/2 the sum of their Charisma mod and Wisdom Mod. This number is known as their Beard Modifier, and affects many of their class abilities. Novices, having begun to unlock the beardly power within them, gain a +2 beardly bonus to Fortitude saves, and 3 damage reduction whenever they are in beardly armor. As Journeyman, they gain +2 beardly bonus to reflex saves, and their damage reduction improves to five. At Master level, having achieved cosmc beardly understanding, damage reduction improves to seven, and a Beard Master no longer ages and is immune to aging effects, though they still die when their time is up.

Beard Weapons: At first level, a Beard Master's beard becomes a magical weapon, taking the form of any simple or martial melee weapon the Beard Master is proficient with, except for two-handed weapons or reach weapons. Its damage and critical are typical for its type, and it does magic damage in addition to regular damage type for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction. At fifth level, the Beard Master's beard gains a reach of 15 feet and is treated as a reach weapon when attacking more than 5 feet away. At ninth level, a Beard Master can add spikes to his beard weapon, regardless of type, and gain an additional +2 piercing damage.

Beard Armor: At third level, a Beard Master has moved sufficiently along the Way of the Beard to gain further control over their beards, allowing them to shape it into any light armor. It grants protection equal to armor of its type, and offers no AC penalties or spell failure chance. At seventh level, it may take the form of any medium armor. The same bonuses apply, with the addition that speed penalties incurred by armor ar halved. At ninth level, a Beard Master's beard make take the form of heavy armor. All previous bonuses apply, with the addition that a Beard Master may choose to add spikes to their armor, even if normally not allowed.

Beardic Knowledge: At level 5, a Beard Master has gained sufficient status in the Order and contacts as to know things others of their station wouldn't. A Beard Master may make a Beardic Knowledge check in place of a Gather Information check using their Knowledge: Way of the Beard ranks. They may also substitute this for any Knowledge check, but at a -10 penalty.

Other

Multiclassing: Beard Master's may multiclass, so long as they retain and maintain their beard sufficiently.

Ex-Beard Masters: Any Beard Master who voluntarily shaves their beard loses all class abilities associated with the Beard Master, and may never again take a level in it. A Beard Master whose beard is taken from them, by accident or enemy design, loses all class abilities until they are able to regrow their beard to a suficient standard without the aid of their abilities. They also lose 1000 xp per Beard Master level. A successful Will save will halve the amount.

------------------------------------------------------------

So yeah. Will edit for typos and such as I go.

What does anyone think?
