Subject: The curse

Hey now... The Rystefn Curse doesn't always cause the game to die... sometimes I'm the only one that has to drop. I could point to a certain Star Wars game around here as evidence.

I don't know how much of Christoph's history you picked up, but he wasn't always with medical. Much of his early career is classified still (Olan has the details, and I'm more than willing to PM them to you as well), but in light of his specific training and talents, I'm thinking Fleet would have slapped him in the diplomatic corps against any protestations he might care to make.

...of course, anyone with half a brain knows diplomats are always up to their necks in intelligence and counterintelligence.

Anyway, it was a thought that occurred to me, and seemed a logical progression of the character in a time of war such the Federation is in now. At least, were I privy to his files and in charge of any part of directing the war, that's what I'd've done with him.

I'm pretty much a human... more or less...

I kid. Arevaci is pure homo sapiens.

Of course, I won't refuse it just out of spite, I'm a big fan of contstantly striving to improve my games however I can... but I've been pretty universally unimpressed by WotC for well over a decade now, i don't hold any high hopes.

Subject: characters

Most of my characters have some brand of weird or another to them... but there's weird and creative, and there's stupid munchkiny weird. Half-breeds of all varieties have crossed my table, templates galore, and all manner of broken senseless class mixes (comes of trying to play at a gaming store). It takes something pretty strange to really make an impact with me... Like the joker who wanted to play a friggin' wookiee in a D&D game.

Now here's 4th ed coming out, and I'll give it a chance, but honestly, I doubt I'll be impressed. 2nd I have been, and 2nd I shall stay.

That counts as complicated combat. I've had a few players with whom I forced maps and minis for every combat because they just utterly failed to grasp the concept that even if there are 20 or 30 enemies, you can't just swing five times and get five of them if you're in a narrow hallway.

You know, people may denigrate the old "you're hanging out in the tavern," but it's a classic for a reason. Read fantasy fiction and see how often that's exactly what the heroes do. How often was Conan doing that? Pick a bar, any bar, and see how many regulars show up there night after night. this is real and believable behavior for a group of people, especially when you don't have much else in the way of social gatherings or popular entertainment. No staying home and watching TV, no going to the movies or chatting on the phone. No internet or video games. There's work, sleep, church, and the local tavern.

Miniatures are something that can easily go either way, and like most things, the best advice is to find out what works for you and to go with it. I've been running a ShadowRun game for about fifteen months now, and maps and minis are a big part of it - but that's the nature of ShadowRun. In D&D, I almost never use them except for large and/or complicated battles.

My best advice for a GM is this: It's a game. It's not just the players who are supposed to have fun. If you aren't enjoying the game, too, change stuff up so you do. Always remember Rule 0/The Golden Rule/The Prime Rule/whatever else you care to call it: If you don't agree with a rule - change it.

I'm tempted to bring Arevaci aboard. I think his particular talents might make him uniquely suited to the diplomatic corps on a warship... Not that he'd like an assignment like that, but sometimes you just don't get a choice in the matter - especially in a time of war. What do you think?

I hope you mean standard race, since there are quite a few of the humanoid races that fall into that category. Pretty much all of the goblinoids, as I recall, in fact.

Alright, our fearless leader has decided to brave the Rystefn Curse and invite me aboard to replace the lost mage. As soon as I get a few things run by the DM, I'll be finishing up character creation and jumping in.

Life is dangerous. Find what joy you can in it while you live. Safety is a relative term anyway. Wherever you are and whatever you do, a giant rock can still fall on your head and kill you. So find yourslef a pretty girl (or several, if that's your thing), and make the most of the time you have. Live every day like it's your last, because one day, it will be.

The world was always corrupt.

Humans are part of nature. What we do is not damage, merely taking things in a new direction.

Olan's return and the movie thread got me thinking about this and how much I liked my character... I was seriously considering throwing down a post and seeing if anyone took the bait. Count Arevaci in.

Baseball is a thinking sport. There's a lot of stragegy that goes into it, and that's what the stats are about... Of course, if you aren't into the strategy and stats, then you'll probably ever really get into it. I played a few games as a kid, but I never much got into it for that reason.

Also, I'm very glad to see you stressing what's important here. Too many people are quick to jump on calling things a talent or a gift. That encourages laziness. Most of the time what you actually have is skill. Talent is something you're born with, an accident of chance. Skill is something you work for. It represents long hours of hard work and dedication. It requires drive, heart, grit, and determination. Skill is something you EARNED. It's something worth being proud of, because you accomplished it yourself, it wasn't handed to you on a platter. Here's hoping that the lesson hits home with the young one, Olan, he'll grow into a better man for it. The desire to actually work for what you want is becoming a rarer and rarer thing in our society, and it does my heart good to see a chance at resurgence in it. This country was built by great men working hard and refusing to give in no matter how difficult it got. It's been inherited by a bunch of whining weaklings with their hands held out.

Also, there are few sounds in thsi world quite so satisfying as the crack of bat against ball, are there?
