OK, I'm too lazy to answer all the questions since I last posted here... I guess I'll pick up the most recent one.

As I said - some of it can be meaningful - I'm in no way condemning ALL of the posting games - just the ones that are basically post-count boosting spam. Even so, if that's your thing, go for it, who am I that you should care what I think about your passtime? If my opinion honestly carries that much weight with you... well, I guess I should start one of those cults where I just sit around and spout wisdom wile other people give me money and sexual favors in return.

Yeah, I always thought it was stupid you have to take mounted combat before mounted archery - they're completely unrelated skills. Many gateway feats arelike this. Why need you take point-blank shot before far shot? Shooting close and shooting far away are opposite skills. Hell, only fighters get enough feats to take anything with gateway requirements for the most part, anyway - especially the horrific Dodge tree. Dodge is a completely worthless feat altogether, all it does is make other feats harder to get. They should just make most feats fighter-only and be done with it.

Subject: Flail Snail

I always thought the flail snail was cooler than most of the weird monsters we got handed in D&D - at least it made some kind of sense. Prey animals developing big bonking appendages is reflected in real-world animals, you know.

So lately, I've been unable to tear my mind away from the idea of playing an adolescent wemic... "Yeah, I'll scout ahead" then lying in wait to pounce the party when they catch up and running off. Also, randomly attacking leaves, dust motes, invisible imaginary squirrels, etc... I think it would be high-larious.

Now, I indulge in games from time to time - "What's your favorite [insert category]" or "Say something niceabout the previous poster" type threads are basically party games That help you get to know the other people around and let you interact in a light, but meaningful way. If someone made a "3-word story" thread that actually managed to house a story, that would be no end of interesting, but I've never seen one hold a coherent thought for even a whole sentence, so it's just spam in my book.

Topic: A few questions for 2nd edition DMs
Subject: 2nd edition

"1. A lot of the spells presented in the PHB aren’t exactly balanced. This one really came to my attention about a week ago when I was statting up a spell-using enemy of the party. A lot of the spells restricted from use in underground encounters seem particularly overpowered (e.g. Call Lightning) … presumably because the writers assumed they’d only ever be used in the one or two random encounters on the way to the adventurers’ latest dungeon crawl. As written, a lot of low level spells also don’t give saves that IMHO really should (Silence 15’ radius and Colour Spray- I’m looking at you)."

Well, Call Lighting is a spell without value at any time. One bolt per turn means one bolt, period, in any combat I've ever seen. Color Spray is gos good in low-levels, then sucks later in the game, same as Sleep, so I'd let it be. Silence doesn't completely shut down casters, as there are nonverbal spells they can toss around... in the end, some spells are just better than others. That's how things go. Some weapone are better than others, some armor are better than others, there's no reason I can think of that spells should be different in this.

"The best hard and fast rule I can come up with is to allow saves for all non damage-dealing offensive magic, possibly at some sort of penalty to balance them with staples such as “Sleep” and “Charm Person”."

If you don't think Charm Person falls into the Way More Powerful Than Other Spells group, you haven't read it. One save per month? It's pretty much the best spell in the game.

"2. If a Cleric turns undead to force them to retreat and then uses ranged weapons to fure on the undead while they’re moving away then is the enchantment broken? All the PHB says is that turned undead are compelled to retreat from the caster. My first inclination was just to say “yes” (for the same reason that I wouldn’t let undead with bows fire on the party once they’d been turned) but I’d be curious to see how other DMs have handled this one?"

I let them shoot at the undead, Turning is a powerful effect. Theoreticaly, the undead could shoot back, but they're retreating, which hampers the use of missile weapons, yeah?

"3. I’ve been looking over the “overbearing” rules in the PHB. Do you allow armour to count against grappling attacks? As wearing a set of full plate would, if anything, unbalance a character I can’t think of a good reason why it should give any sort of protection against being grappled. But if it doesn’t then overbearing suddenly becomes an all-too deadly tactic both for swarm monsters (10 orcs making an overbearing attack against a 5th level fighter) or for PCs to use against more powerful adversaries (5 party members grappling that one 12th level enemy). Neither of which really fit the fantasy genre particularly well."

I suggest you take a look at Combat & Tactics for better unarmed combat rules. It says there that armor doesn't help you against overbearing, that a swarm of monsters has a pretty good chance of taking down an adventurer that way, and that a person with a sword will likely kill a few before they accomplish it. I think this is reflected well in fantasy fiction, and might explain why, for instance, Gandalf would flee from a bunch of goblins under the Misty Mountains instead of trying to fight them with his magical sword.

Subject: discussion

Interestingly, almost all of the most horrific acts ever committed by humanity were done in the name of religion. Going to chutch means pretty much nothing.

Also, acting like a good person in no way indicates a religious or spiritual nature. Remember, the largest single charitable donation ever was made by an atheist...

Mostly, though, the ark wasn't built by an amateur. It wasn't built. It's a story. Like talking snakes, and a 6,000 year old world. Literalism goes hand in hand with the first point above.

So I have to apologize for being in and out so much. I know I've signed up for games, and it never seems to work out. Over the years, I've taken to half-jokingly calling this the "Rystefn curse." For one reason or another, soon after a game starts, something happens to prevent me from playing in it - whether in my life or the person organizing the game. This last time, it's been RL problems on my end. Sadly, problems which tie to the Inn here in ways that will make it difficult for me to be around (hence, my most recent absence).

I'd like to thank you all for being good friends to me over the years. An unending source of entertainment and enjoyment. I'll be away for a while, though, and don't know how long. Those of you who would like to be in touch with me, my profile has my e-mail, and you can IM me on the same account.

To one person specifically: Mo mhúirnín bán, tá mo chroí istigh ionat. Tá tu go halainn. Cronaím thú.

It is the same, more or less. The race/class restriction weren't iron-clad, but as far as I'm concerned, they all made good sense, and I'd question anyone wanting to play a character outside of them, even in later editions. Elven paladins don't make a lick of sense to me, neither dwarven wizards. Half a dozen saves compared to three I can see the point, but frankly, I think three is too few. Wisdom is perception, not wisdom, in 3e, for example... How precisely do more sensitive eyes make you more likely to avoid being blinded by a bright flash of light in the face (will save vs. Color Spray)?

Negative ACs might seem counter intuitive at first, but think of it this way - in golf, do you want a lower score or a higher? In racing a higher time, or a lower? There are quite a lot of situations where bigger numbers are simply not better. None of the people I introduced to the game took more than a few rounds of combat to grasp why a lower AC was fundamentally better. The simple fact is that 2nd ed combat and 3e combat are essentially the same. Thac0 works exactly the same way as BAB except the number count down instead of up. A first-level cleric with a strength of 11 has exactly the same chance of hitting an opponent with a 10 Dex wearing chainmail in either edition. Roll a 15 or higher to hit.

I'm sure they'll finagle a way to coerce their customer base into paying them for it. Knowing WotC, it wouldn't surprise to see them disable prestige classes on your system if you aren't current or something of that nature.

OK, I'm pretty sure I have at least bits and pieces of it still floating around, and I'm certain I can fill in the gaps. Might take me a few days, but I'll dig up what I can, fill in the rest, and retcon it all later when it turns out to be wrong.

Subject: cold iron

It's a crappy weakness. Cold Iron is one of the more common things one might come across in a human culture. Luckily for the fey, it actually gets less common as humanity progresses, being replaced with steel and plastics in most of its original common uses. Interestingly enough, we still make fences out of it, though. I guess sometimes you just have to keep out those pesky fairies.
