We can get a special title for having 200 posts? I need to get on that, then, becuase my doofy generic title is really uncool.

Can't have that, now, can we? It is the sovereign duty of any father to spoil his daughters. So let it be written. So let it be done.

The portrayal of teenage romance is pretty accurate (along with the participants being convinced it'll last forever)... except that the guy isn't a teenager. He's supposed to be 100+ years old. Which is why I can't paint him a naive teenager who doesn't know better. Dude's a manipulative stalker on the thin edge of pedophelia.

Subject: Yeah, like I said...

I'm not trying to start a fight. Just have a discussion. Frankly, I think dismissing it as "not real" and therefore unimportant is ignoring the fact that a significant swath of the population does take it very seriously, and that a lot of people clearly think that it does portray the ideal relationship.

Fiction can have a real and lasting impact on the world, and it's not exactly always positive.

Subject: Sorry

I'm not trying to pick a fight. I'm sorry if it comes off that wqay. I'm just trying to have a discussion. It's perfectly possible to enjoy a book, movie, tv show, etc. while recognizing the flaws of a character or the imperfections in a relationship in it. There's no such thing as a perfect relationship anyway.

I mean, I enjoyed Hellboy II quite a bit, but I'll be the first to point out the string of stupid mistakes made by nearly every primary character in it. I'll criticize the writing, plot, and characterization of Lord of the Rings.

Humans have the amazing capacity to learn from the mistakes of others (even fictional others), and it would seriously decrease the suffering in the world if we actually used it from time to time.

Subject: Alright, then

First, there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be a vampire, in concept. And a pretty hypocrite I'd be to say anything against wanting to bitten (I'm rather a fan of it myself, in truth), but let me ask you a question: Do you really think it would be romantic if a hundred-year old man broke into your house and watched you sleep? If he took parts out of your car to prevent you from seeing your friends? If he reminded you constantly that he he not only could kill you, but that he actually wants to?

Perfect golden eyes aside, then man clearly has self-loathing issues (if you haven't read the stuff from Ed's PoV, it's not going to be so clear, I think), and that's not exactly the firmest footing on which to build a relationship. I mean, he even threatens to commit suicide.

"But he loves her" is not an excuse for this kind of behavior. It's the same excuse millions of women make for the men who abuse them, and the mentality that it's ok is a big part of the problem.

A mighty fine sentiment, that. Too bad more people can't seem to think that way (I've seen Twilight fanbs darn-near riot over those exact criticisms... Not that Trekkies or other brands of nerd aren't just as bad).

Still, I pretty much always find it worrisome when a large swath of people try to point at something and call it the ideal relationship. Stes a lot of people up for pain down the road, you know?

Well, I'm in as soon as I get the answers to the questions I posed before. Not trying to be rude here, just looking for information before I commit to character idea that may not work because it relies on something from a book you're not allowing or somesuch.

Subject: JJ

A) Assessment of the Mayans' predictive power stands. They couldn't predict the end of their own civilization, why would you believe any other prediction they supposedly made.

B) There is no Mayan prediction about what happens in 2012 beyond the calendar rolling over.

C) Nostradamus predicted nothing. Ever. Period. People claiming that the scribblings of his later life mean anything are insulting the man's actual accomplishments.

D) The 2012 is making a bold claim that they (read: you) have any idea whatsoever of what's going to happen in the future, so how's about you back it up? Why in the universe do you accept the predictive power of a people I'd bet dollars to donuts you know next to nothing about? What reason could you possibly have to believe that any such prediction was even made, much less believe that it's going to come true? Have you read Nostradamus's writings? (The original, not a translation.) Have you studied the Mayans and their culture and history? Are you doing anything other than taking some New Age website at its word and trusting them not to be lying and/or completely mistaken?

Let's think back to grade school, here. Remember those critical thinking excercises? From whence cometh your information, and why do you trust it so much?

Subject: Nos?

Nostradamus didn't predict anything. He has diarrhea of the inkwell and a bunch of people pretend to interpret his writings into prediction. Anyone can babble incoherently with such volume that if you look hard enough, it might look like a vague-ish prediction of something that actually happened.

The Mayans, as I said before, did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012 at all. It's just rolling the odometer, so to speak, nothing more. I tell you what, though: if you really believe the world will end in December of 2012, I'll gladly take everything you own the day before. Since the world is ending, you won't need it anymore, right? If you're not willing to give it to me, I guess that says where your real belief lies, no?

It's important to note that A) The Mayan calendar dfoesn't end in 2012, it just rolls over. Kind of like when you get to Dec 31, the world doesn't end, you just get a new count; and B) The Mayans failed to predict the end of their own civilization, so why should we take them seriously even if they had predicted the end of the world?

Also, as far as I know, there is no astronomical significance predicted for the year whatsoever, and I'm curious as to what you're talking about there.

Topic: I'm gonna get shot.... 2nd Edition DnD Game!
Subject: Level 3

See... here's the thing about flat level ratings: you bone the thief/bard. For exaple, a level 3 wizard has at least 5000xp, but a thief or bard with that number would be level four. It's something most people don't think about, especially since 3rd edition standardized xp progression across the classes. I'd highly suggest giving the players an XP number rather than a level, since it solves that problem and it makes multi- and dual-classed characters much simpler to adjudicate as well.

Here's how it breaks down for dual-classing: (this happened to me once, by the way.) Say you start at 4th level. Instinct for a dual-classed PC is to say that you get a 2/2 character instead. A level four wizard would have ten thousand experience at the minimum, while the fighter/bard dual-classed character has 2000/1250 for a total of 3250, less than 1/3 of what the wizard would have, and the power-level of the two characters in play would reflect this, making the 2/2 character seriously crippled in relation to the rest of the party.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do in your game here, just pointing out a rather common issue which weights the game away from multiclassing and from rogues (and hits rogue-group multiclassed characters especially hard).

It's not in Paladin's HB, it's not in Elves' HB, and it's not in Skills&Powers. A lot of people liked to call BladeSingers the "elven paladin," which is completely wrong, but might the origin of something like that... Or it could be a Dragon Magazine article. All the rules I have won't even let half-elves do it, so I can't imagine a full elf getting it.

Subject: Experience? Check.

I've been playing 2nd edition since it was released. What books are you allowing? What llevel will we be starting? How will you be dividing xp for multi/dual-classed characters if we start above 1st level? What's the square root of a million? What method of generation will you be using? How will you be handling gear if you start above 1st level?

Depending on the answers to the above questions, I'm leaning towards a dwarven archer. (What? You think elves are the best archers? Baseless propaganda, I tell you! How can you fire accurately without a beard to guage wind direction and speed?) Otherwise, I'll likely be a human thief or bard, given my preference... However, since I have been playing for so long, and I've literally played every race/class/alignment combination in the game (except for some of the stuff in Complete Humanoids), I'm more than willing to fill in what the group needs if there's some kind of glaring hole in the party makeup, or if someone has an idea for a character that needs a brother in the party or something like that.

Oh, in case I wasn't clear - yes, I'm iunterested in the game.

He probably could have killed the bandits easily, but there was at least one out there with a crossbow, and Iskanna didn't see in the dark. he had to find a way to keep them from hurting her, something sure to keep all hostile eyes on himself and off of her... Advancing on the fallen men, Toby rested his boot on the neck of the closest. As he leaned down to the man, his features seemed to blur and melt away, leaving only bones. Empty sockets seeming to stare into the bandit's soul, his hollow voice rattled out, echoing coldly in the night, "Call off the archer."
