There is no denyig that how we are raised has some impact on who we become, but anyone with a family can tell you the being raised in the same environment does NOT give you the same person again. There is both.

As for sun signs and the like - the Law of Averages states that about one in twelve people should fit their personality to their sign. In my experience this number is pretty close. If you see a higher ratio, you should ask yourself how many of them were raised to think that it was accurate and told their whole lives that they would be a certain way because of their sign. Even in small doses, something like that can have a profound effect over the years. You may also want to look at yourself and see if you aren't perhaps grafting your notions of what a person's personality should be based on their sign onto them... inflating the "proper" attributes and ignoring it when the person acts outside of the expected course based on their sign. Humans have an alarming tendency to do this without noticing.

On a related note. No one has ever guessed my sign right on the first try. Law of Averages says about one in twelve should if they are guessing randomly, so I guess it mean I don't remotely fit the sign.

Subject: Traditions

I don't really have a lot of traditions, although every year, if we get Christmas snow (it's happened once in the last hundred years, by the way - that was the year before last), everyone freaks out and goes outside for snowball fights and snowmen and general fun with everyone around at three in the morning. It's crazy how something like that can bring everyone together. To my knowledge, there was no violence of any kind that didn't involve throwing balls of crystalized water at someone that night anywhere in the city.

I was a hero because I had a pipe for the neighborhood snowman. He lasted three days before melting.

The only real tradition I have is the yearly decorating of the hat. I'll try to get a picture this year for you guys.

Subject: Ioun

Everyone you know is right. I went to some length a while back to try to track down the correct pronunciation. It turns out that Gygax borrowed the concept (and the name) of the Ioun stone from a series of books - with the permission of the author, of course. I can't recall what the books were called (partly because they didn't sound terribly interesting to me), but apparently the creater of the stones pronounces it EYE-oon...

...Of course, since I didn't excactly manage to track down an audio file of him talking about them, there is still some room for doubt.

I have spare time again now that RenFest is over (last weekend was a holiday and doesn't count as free time)...

Well, I guess for a while, my free time will be dedicated to neglected upkeep on my weapons (I'm a bit of a weapons collector). Also, I run Shadowrun weekly, I'm starting an AD&D game soon, and I'm running IronMan D&D at OwlCon (come down and play, the more, the merrier), so I need to get that playtested.

Upon further reflection, I don't have any spare time. LoL

I live on the Texas Gulf Coast, we don't hold Will's Beach Parties in the summer because the heat and humidity can be literally lethal if you aren't used to it, and even if you are, it still isn't remotely fun.

We would have started up already, but most of the key players work the RenFest, which just ended. This time of year, you can reasonably expect it to be 80 degrees on a semi-regular basis, and even at 60, it's nice with a fire (which we always have). Of course, inclement weather never stops us - Will's Beach Parties have been known to be held 1500 miles away from Will and 2000 miles from the nearest beach.

Also, Bon Noel means "good Christmas." Merry means happy, so you would say Joie Noel... and anyone who tells my wife I speak a word of French will be keel-hauled.
