Topic: Plot twists most worthy of a dice shower?
Subject: Just so you know...

Around here, we don't do that. Dice can become rather expensive to replace rather quickly. Throwing dice at someone is reserved for the harshest of crimes (like taking the last slice of pizza or pronouncing it "Thay-co"). Normally, you would receive a Frito shower.

I would have posted yesterday, but I had a pretty close call in the morning, and it left me shaken up for the rest of the day.I may or may not be able to post tonight or tomorrow, and as always, the weekends are right out as long as the RenFest is still going. That means you still have two more weekends to put up with this nonsense. Also, any of you living close enough that a weekend trip to the Houston area is plausible should come down and see me. I'll gladly give out a crewman's discount to anyone on the ship.

Stardate: 2366.10.22
USS Discovery; Corridor outside the observation lounge – 1106

In his life, Arevaci had learned a lot about people and why they did the things they did. Between his studies and his natural perception, it was a rare person whose actions caught Christoph off-guard. He was prepared for MacTavish's approach, and as soon as he noticed the man trying to catch up to him, the chief counselor stopped walking and waited politely for him to catch up.

“ ‘Scuse me, Counselor,” he called as he drew closer and slowed his pace again, “would ye mind if I bothered ye fer a spell?”

"Not at all... MacTavish, I believe it was?"

((OOC: Assuming some sort of positive response))

Extending a hand in greeting with a smile, Christoph continued, "I was hoping to have more personal introductions with the senior staff during the course of the next few days, anyway. I see no reason why I shouldn't start now."

((Sorry for the delay, week's been crazy. I was going to send a PM to start this, but I was posting anyway, so I threw this in, hopefully we can get the rest posted as one post))

1214 - Medical

With a little help from the computer, Christoph quickly made his way to Med Bay for his meeting with Doctor White - rather later than he had anticipated, but it had been an eventful first day of duty. Priorities must be maintained, and Arevaci was sure that the good doctor would agree that a routine entry physical wasn't exactly the ultimate trump card for time management.

As the door swished closed behind him, Christoph caught sight of the CMO and made his way across the bay towards him. "Doctor White? I apologize for the lateness of my arrival, but the day has been rather full. You did, hoever wish to see me today? If necessary, I can reschedule, since you seem to have rather a lot on your plate with the vaccine and all that to deal with..."

((OOC: Still oblivious))

1626 - Arevaci's office

Looking through the folders of his predecessor, Christoph quickly noticed several differences in their outlook on their mutual profession. While this was nothing new in the profession of psychology, it might be somewhat awkward for the crew - especially those with a serious need for regular counseling. One thing Arevaci excelled at, however, was making people feel comfortable and at home... well, most of the time. Those who would have the most difficult time should likely be introduced at the earliest, since progress was likely to be slowest with them. This Lieutenant (junior grade) Natalie Keely might pose problems. Uncomfortable in social situations at the best of times, she seemed to have had a significant lack of healthy interaction with males. It seemed that she had been making some progress, but a sudden change like this could easily undo all of that if not handled carefully. After some consideration, Christoph decided that making it a priority to Lt. Keely might make things worse, and it would be best to take a more casual approach with her. A message waiting for her in her quarters when her shift ended would likely be best.

"Lieutenant Keely, this is Lieutenant Arevaci. My notes from Counselor Gene indicate that you and he had a regular appointment. If you would, I would appreciate you coming down to my office at your convenience to discuss the possibility of continuing these sessions. Thank you for your time."

-Keely's Quarters 1729hrs-

Natalie had had a rough day at work. They were turned down for an away mission to go to Rautos Prime and catalogue the life around where the Mniasha Trees had been harvested and they were still on a deadline to find a cure for the Rautian Plague as soon as possible yet had no way of being able to find the actual component which triggered the reaction from the Mntiasha trees that got the healing effect they were looking for . Still, the Captain suggested they not take a shuttle because of the threat of some anti-Federation terrorist cells in the nearby area. They were worried about the Science team's safety, it made sense on one hand, but on the other hand, Natalie kept feeling like the more time that was wasted the more Rautians suffered and died because of Starfleet's inability to act more quickly in this instance. Still, she had to admit, the situation on Gavin V was pretty serious as well. With a sigh, she sat down to check her messages.

One from Ben...she smiled, just knowing he'd been thinking about her made her feel better and she decided she'd open that one last so she could enjoy it more. Two from her own xenobotany lab. Notes she'd sent herself to look over later. And, the last one was from the new Head Counselor, Lieutenant Arevaci. It appeared he wanted to set up a regular counseling appointment with her, like the one she used to have set up before with Counselor Gene. This made her stomach begin doing nervous flip-flops.

A new counselor comes in and the first thing he wants is to evaluate and work with me? Am I that bad? Gene left notes on me? They must think I'm hopeless! she thought, nervously playing with a stray curl that had fallen from her hair clip. Natalie thought she'd been doing so well. Why would the counselor want to begin sessions with her now? She wondered.

With a heavy sigh, she replied to the communique: " Lieutenant Arevaci, this is Natalie Keely. If you really feel it's necessary for me to begin sessions with you I am available Friday or Sunday mornings before 1000."

She paused, noting the computer's calender said it was the weekend already. "Should I stop by tomorrow morning?" she asked.

1732 - Arevaci's office

Christoph shook his head with a bit of mild self-frustration, listening to the message from Lt. Keely for a fifth time, he still couldn't decide from her tone of voice if there was a tinge of real fear behind the absolutely normal nervousness in her voice. He was so much better at reading people in person. So much so that he always felt that remote communication was only half communicated. Maybe I should talk to the councilor about this, he thought with a chuckle. Well, whatever harm he might or might not have done, the action was taken. All he could do now was work on the future.

"Lt. Keely, Sunday would be a perfectly acceptable time for me to discuss with you whether or not it you think it is necessary for me for you to begin sessions with me." Just a touch of stress on the "you think" to carry across the message that the choice lie in Keely's hands. In truth, he was as much arranging the meeting to assess his predecessor's evaluation of the situation as to see whether or not she wanted to continue the sessions. Notes in a file could only say so much... even less so than a voice communique. How could he say for sure whether or not she really needed his help until he met her? Of course, the ultimate choice would be left to her, no matter which way he felt. If she felt she needed his help, he would not withhold it. If she thought otherwise, he would not try to force it upon her.

((OOC: Again, sorry for the slowness of my response guys... but I'm still faster than thet tour I'm supposed tobe getting from the Bajoran))

Well, it certainly sounds Italian, but it's not. Not that I'd expect anyone who's not a MAJOR history nerd to know that (meaning any of the crew could easily mistake it). It's actually Celtiberian, meaning he's descended from an oft-neglected branch of the Celts living in Spain/Portugal. Interesting historical aside - it was Celtiberian mercenaries who were the main body of Hannibal's army, and while the war elephants made a substantial impact in the first battle, the mercs were the ones with the staying power and survivability to allow Hannibal to rampage all over Italy with nothing the Romans could do to stop him.

Ever wonder how Hannibal could trounce the Romans so soundly on their home turf, and then lose to them so bady on his own? there are, as in any war, a variety of contributing factors, but the presence of Celtiberians for the former and their absence in the latter is rather telling, don't you think?

*reads back* Speaking of history nerds... *shakes head*

Subject: Staff Meeting

Stardate: 2366.10.22
USS Discovery, observation lounge - 1025

It had been a long night, but Christoph wasn't tired just yet. He had learned years ago how to handle long hours, and knew how to take short rests and catch naps when time permitted. More to the point, a long night exploring a starship that was a work of art more than a conveyance was no great hardship. Doing it in good company certainly did nothing to worsen the experience.

Of course, falling asleep during his first real dty aboard the Dicovery would do him no good, and none to the rest of the crew as well, so he attended with a steaming mug of black coffee in hand. Better safe than sorry, after all.

"Thank you all for coming," he began. "This meeting should, by all rights, be a short one."

((Edited to avoid repeating the meeting over and over))

The history of the general principle of vaccines was not unknown to Arevaci, but he nodded along with recitation as though it were a great revelation. Anything the doctor said might turn out to be critical, and would be counterproductive for anyone to give the impression that any of it was unimportant. The specifics of this particular vaccine were, wihout doubt, even more important, and Christoph made noted of the pertinant points for future reference, just in case he could be of help.

"Mister MacTavish, I understand that you have more specific information pertinent to this mission?"

“Aye, sair,” Mac replied with a heavy sigh as he got to his feet and tapped a key sequence that would transfer the data on his PADD to the wall mounted display, “an’ given wha’ Dr Miliken’s jus’ said, I’m afraid I’ve go’ a wee bit more’n wha’ I’d set off with.” His grey eyes panned around the table, pausing for a brief instant on each face…

Fear, frustration, anger, worry... Something very important was working its way through the poor man's psyche. Christoph leaned forward in his seat, studying the man closely as he delivered his report. The revelation was nothing less than Arevaci had expected. No wonder the MacTavish had been on the edge of control. His own brother and potentially a deadly enemy. It would be enough to break many men, and had.

This situation would bear close watching... very close indeed.

Subject: Cedric

Ok, so this story has gotten around locally, with some variations and ebellishments, but the this is the real and true version - I know because I was there.

Back in High School, my best friend had an idea for an interesting twist to spring on a group of PCs. One of the members of the party had actually been hired by the villain to prevent the PCs from stopping him. Of course, smart players always quesion the motives of a DMPC, but they seem to trust implicitly that another player is not in league with the DM. Selfish, deceptive, cruel, evil, backstabbing? Sure. Plotting their demise with the DM? Not likely. Metagaming insures a certain amount of trust implicit in the party dynamic when the DM introduces the PCs to one another.

So the DM gather his players for what seems like your standard "Stop the evil wizard and his army of undead from overunning the town" adventure. They are joined in this by one Cedric BrightBlade, Paladin of Light, claiming to have information as to the whereabouts of a magical medallion capable of stopping the horde... Who is actually a chaotic evil cleric to the god of war, hired by the villain to prevent some plucky group of unlikely heroes from finding the Madallion of Arylon and foiling his plans. The deceptions was elegant and simple. Tall white horse, shining armor, complement of clerical magic to bluff through paladin abilities, and even the acting skill.

The idea is that eventually the PCs will see through the ruse, have to do battle with Cedric, discover the real location of the medallion, and then move on to the ultimate viallain... Well, that was the idea. Maybe letting me play Cedric wasn't the brightest move ever.

The DM threw several clues at the players, growing more an more blatant over time (as planned at the start, with an XP award commensurate with the amount of time it took to figure it out) as well as requiring that I periodically act in a fashion in line with my CE alignment.

With growing concern, he witnessed clue after clue neatly danced around as I manipulated the party into murdering random commoners, helping me to extort money from a gem counterfeiter, and revenging myself on an old rival.

In desperation, he threw one last overwhelming clue at them - something so blunt, so obvious, so feindishly difficult to play off, that they were guarnteed to spot me, even though it would hand me an ally for the showdown: He has me run into an old friend... an anti-paladin, no less.

"Cedric? Is that you? I haven't seen you since..."

Crap! Better think fast. Interrupt the DM? No other choice, is there... "Yes! It is I: Cedric BrightBlade - THE PALADIN!"

A lesser DM might have just given up and forced the NPC to explain all, but this one was a stickler for fairness... besides, I was a player, too, right? How is it fair to force me to be killed at the hands of the other players when I was doing so well with the character I was given?

That anti-paladin cost me, though. In the end, I had to "entrust him" to carry back my tithe and the surplus of magic items found as well as a sizeable donation for some poor imaginary orphanage he went on and on about.

As surprised as he was at the turnabout and my ability to hoodwink the other players, he was completely unprepared when, just as he had resigned himself to never being able to actually use the second half of the adventure, I lead the party directly to the medallion.

Bearing the weapon that would save the town, we returned too late, finding that in our absence, the undead had overrun the region, and it was in the hands of the vile necromancer, and the good people were enslaved.

Never fear! Cedric has a daring and heroic plan: He will sneak into town alone, discover the location of the villain's hideout, and return, leading the party directly to him for a final showdown.

It took some talking to persuade the thief not to tag along, but I simply could not allow anyone else to risk themselves so. If another were injured in my place, I could never live with myself.

Of corse, I strolled right in. I was expected. I accepted my pay and marked the defenses of the area. returning to the PCs, I gave them all the information they needed, then personally led the assault against him. "Cedric!? I already paid you, I'll not be extorted for more!" The DM had had it, and had the villain explain it all in a passionate outburst of indignation...

"Your lies will not decieve these fine men and women! We have travelled together for many days, and they know who and what I am. Prepare to pay for your foul deeds, villain!"

We beat the wizard senseless, and I got paid again by the town for saving the day.

Afterwards, the DM explained to the players what was going on. Their reactions were among the funniest things I've ever seen! "I should have known!" "I thought there was something weird about him..." "So THAT'S why he beat my first character to death with his bare hands!"

She looked up, smiling. "Alright," she tried to put up a mock stern attitude also. "But we can have none of this young lady business. You can call me Mali." She extended a hand toward his, shaking it firmly, "I would be happy to give you a tour." She grabbed her glass from the bar and stood up. "Do you think it's too late to do so now?" She looked about at the still collected staff as they had begun to weed out.

"Fair enough, Mali," Arevaci responded with a smile, rising to his feet. "And it's never too late to take a tour of a ship like Discovery." Holding out an arm to indicate that she should lead the way, he hoped that all of his initiations with the crew would go as smoothly... Although the odds of each person on the Discovery sharing in one of his hobbies or having a similar background were long indeed.

Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, Christoph accepted his good fortune in beginning his tenure this time so fortuitously. Following Mali's lead throughout the ship, he walked alongside her, close enough to indicate comraderie, but not so close as to make her uncomfortable, listening closely to her descriptions of the various areas of the boat and her experiences aboard ((OOC: whatever she cooses to share, of course)). Nodding appreciatively at the wonders of a Galaxy-class vessel, and adding his own experiences in space to her anecdotes, he soon found himself capivated by the ship... She was truly a marvel, and Arevaci thanked his good fortune for bringing him aboard.

((OOC: feel free to go into whatever details you like of the tour, I'll be away until Monday, though))

“So, what can you tell me about the Discovery? I've read the files, of course, but they can only tell you what a ship had done and what she's constructed of. They can never really tell you who she is, if you take my meaning."

She nodded, straightening out her face to show him she was serious when it came to ships, despite how easily delighted she was that someone had followed her to the bar. "This ship is a beauty." She motioned at the air around her, almost smacking the bartender. "She's strong for her size. She can take quite a beating, even by planet standards, and still be just as manueverable as she would be otherwise." She nearly leapt off of her barstool, still motioning widely. "I should give you a tour, show you how you can almost feel each room in this ship from the deck..." She stopped, her smile subsiding, and looked at the counselor.

"You're no pilot." She sighed, reaching for her drink, but realizing it to be empty. "Bartender, that was a fine drink. Can you impress me again?" She smiled down the bar at the dark gentleman cleaning a glass. She looked back at the counselor, her smile fading again. "Why do you want to know all of this? My job should be of little interest to someone in your field. The way the ship handles won't change the placement of your sofa." She looked at the floor, the weight of her last statement hitting her quickly. She stared at the floor waiting for his response.

Arevaci smiles and rested a hand on her shoulder in mock sterness. "Young lady, I'll have you know that I've been a spacer as long as I've been alive. I was born between the stars, and with luck I'll die out here as well. In my life, I've been aboard more ships than the total number of days I've been planetside."

Ducking down a bit and leaning to the side in an attempt to catch her eye, he continued. "More to the point, I love ships of all shapes and sizes. If that was a serious offer for a tour, I'll gladly take you up on it."

((Apologies for preemptively ditching out on the XO's conversation. Depending on how this plays out, I may be back in time to catch Napoleon's downfall))

Stardate 2366.10.21 Ten Forward

Nothing screamed at him during the introductions, but the Bajoran pulled his attention soon after the meal was finished... Wandering off on her own, but projecting no desire to be alone that Christoph noticed. The small talk around dinner was enlightening and fascinating on levels unappreciated by those in other fields, telling Christoph much of his fellow officers – probably more than they realized or intended. Psychologists are known for seeing to the heart of matters, though, and it would be little surprise to any of them, he was sure, that he had deducted much from their casual conversations. However, for all the layers of information to be found mingling socially, there would be time enough for Arevaci to come to know them. The sooner he familiarized himself with the peculiarities of this Damali Zara, the more effective he would be, both to her and to the crew as a whole.

Walking casually over to the bar, Arevaci nodded to the Chief Helm Officer, “Lt. Damali, was it not?”

((OOC: Assuming something to the affirmative.))

“Christoph Arevaci. Two a's, one e, and an i, although I prefer Christoph to formalities in most cases.” He smiled gently, keeping the tone light and hoping that she would perceive him merely as a newcomer trying to be sociable, rather than a professional head shrinker – and in truth, at least as much of the former as of the latter.

((Again, assuming something other than “Piss off!”))

“I couldn't help but notice that the welcome party wasn't exactly your cup of tea, so to speak. Personally, I prefer a smaller, informal sort of socialization as a general rule. Much more personal, less cluttered, if you take my meaning. I hope you don't mind if I take a seat...”

((Once more, running on the idea of not being completely rebuked))

Taking a seat near the woman, but not so close as to cause undue discomfort, Christoph smiled and gestured around him to the ship. “So, what can you tell me about the Discovery? I've read the files, of course, but they can only tell you what a ship had done and what she's constructed of. They can never really tell you who she is, if you take my meaning.

((A one-sided conversation pretty well falls apart at this point. Arevaci either holds a conversation or sits quietly, leaving Mali with her thoughts. The ball's in your court, suicidolt.))
