Well, being Dutch myself, I'm wondering what on Earth a Dutch Oven can be. We just use one with gas or electricity.

I know there are many sayings in English/American that include the word Dutch, but that doesn't know I understand where they came from.

I've heard of 'going Dutch', where you split the bill after dinner in a restaurant...

I believe a lot of these saying are slangs using by the english during the Anglo Dutch Wars (early 1600's to late 1700) to mock their "enemy". In some parts of the world, pay like a roman means the same as going dutch. I am told that in Netherlands Amerikaans feest has the same meaning - Almerin can testify to whether that is true.

There is also a theory it comes from Dutch doors that are made from two equal parts but I don't find that to be believable.

Dutch Ovens however, are probably the single most versatile kitchen impliment around. Great for stovetop, oven and camping fires.

I first hear about "Dutch Courage" on a show about making Gin.

In 1650 Franciscus Sylvius, a Dutch doctor, created Dutch gin in an attempt create a diuretic medicine. This was then used by soldiers in the Thirty Years' War by English troops and was an instant success for its warming properties on the body in cold weather and its calming effects before battle. Because of the effects of Dutch gin English soldiers fighting in the Dutch Republic in the 17th century apparently called the drink "Dutch Courage".
