Subject: Why D&D over Pathfinder?

Note: this is my own experience and view of Paizo. I am not one to say you shouldn't give them your money if you like their products, just that I have since been on the decline with them b/c I have been dissapointed in their products.
Same reason People chose Pathfinder over DnD: reaction to the voice of the consumer.

The greatest problem with DnD 4.0 was that WotC/Hasbro/whoever the heck runs the brand decided that they would compete against a MMORPG. What was it called again? WoW or something...

Anways, this lead to a lot of spite because old gamers didn't want such a huge paradigm shift in philosophy on how the game runs. This was, in essence DnD publisher's turning their back on their initial customers in hopes of younger ones.

There was also a time when I made an inquery to DnD and they never got back to me on it. This offended me.

Then there was Paizo with their gentle reminder of what DnD was: a RPG. They fixed a lot of the mistakes people were mumbling about in 3.5 (HD of casters, rogue. Sorcerer not having eschew materials, etc.) and started listening to peoples questions, concerns, and ideas. They made their world pop out, and feel alive by giving it a similar layout to our own world (Europe and africa = Inner Sea region). They also were renowned for listening to people on their forums, and working towards projects that the people wanted.

But now, Paizo is in the same boat DnD was in all those years ago. Every adventure path is designed around some sort of sub-system, and time after time there are huge errors in the published materials that they make you spend 18+ dollars on. Then they make stuff like this that has absolutley no point and then act surprised when it doesn't sell: http://paizo.com/products/btpy8oxq?GameMastery-Map-Pack-Swallowed-Whole

You see, the "we are a small company" explination for faults only works when you are in fact a small company. Acting the same way when you are beating the next major competator 3:1 will demand a certain level of higher quality - because you know, your making more money. To do otherwise makes me feel like you are just manipulating me.

Now then, what does this have to do with DnD Next? Well they are doing what Paizo was doing: listening to the players during playtest. It sounds like they will on occassion go to an extreme change just to see how it will be recieved, but in general they will take into consideration any points, problems, or ideas that are palced on the forums.

Will this hold after the release? maybe - for a time. But as it is, I feel like I am playing a part in designing a game system that me and my friends can enjoy - and I am working on it with people all over North America.

So for anything else, it is worth the experience of seeing just how different the game can change over the course of a few months, and see that in light of the finished product.

Also: DnD Next has been in playtest beta for over a year and it looks like it could be another before they consider going to the publishing process. Pathfinder never had that kind of span. reason for pointing it out: it is an oppertunity that WotC is taking to havily refine a game that they hope everyone will agree is better than Pathfinder in the same way Pathfinder was better than 3.5.

How everyone has different lay outs. Good to hear my exact issue isn't (as of yet) that common place. It is only 5 secs, but when it can happen 3-4 times in a given session at ye olde rdinn, it can get a bit irksome :<

Subject: Tab Location

I was just wondering, is anyone else finding the tabs at the top of RDInn a bit unconventional? I find that when I want to navigate to an article under "Latest Updated Forum Topics" I have to go through Armoury tab. This in turn opens up the list which covers the tab I wanted to click on. I then have to move my curour off the list and wait a few seconds for it to turn off.

I'm just wondering if I'm the only one that gets repeatedly sucked into this time trap of 5 seconds, or if others are having similar issues.

Also wondering if there are any ways that this could be fixed (oor if it is even worth fixing as it is a thing of inconvinience of 5 seconds at a time).

B/c I know that they are relativley harmless. I also know that for budding sorcerers, they are awesome to have as intimidating pets!

The explorers of Canada did not carry as much as you are reffering to, and had to go much further with what they had. It came down to foraging/hunting/trapping for food as a staple.

Granted no one REALLY wants to be, roleplay, or reinact the first explorers... because scurvy, dehydration, poor moral, and other shiza. Just saying we can extend our resources to explore this area.

Now that I think about it: we should work on exploring the river next. We should get a canoe ordered and hire a proffesion (sailor) to help us out with that. Thats how actual explorers worked - since river routs were the most convienant method of travel (albiet limited in direction).

Though perhaps there are tales of a Ogopogo living in the waters and we dont want to sail/canoe around in the rivers? IDK...

I had stated that in my notes: we would have to go aroundafter exploring the bandit camp hex.

I am too lazy to redo my post. so fly with it someone and point out that we cant all salvage like a baws. (Cause you know, Frodrick can.) Lets just say he is being a silly dwarf and neglecting that fact.

Subject: The plan

Seeing the glimmering mineral, Frodrick took the back of his axe and gently used it as a makeshift pick. “I’m gonin’ to grab some of this here stuff and bring it back to Mr. Leveton. He is sure to know if tis worth anythin’ at all, seeing as he is a traders man after all!” After getting a small chunk of the mineral in question, Frodrick placed it in his gold pouch.

After having spent most of the day looking around the area of the cave, Frodrick made a proposition for the group.
“Our stock is still fairly good, and we be out here anyways. I suggest we look into the rest of the hills areas. Less likely hood of getting caught by surprise from any predators or bandits in the area, and we will need to come back here at some point anyway. If we head east a bit then go south for a few miles then back up North West we can chart a hefty section of the green belt in relative safety. Then if we haven’t seen no action, and we still have the stock to push on, we can enter the forest where we met the bandits and do a few rounds in there.”

Proposed route:
From D1 > E6 > E7 > F6 > F5 > E5

Then back to Olegs OR:

From E5 > D4 > C4 > C3 > C5 then go to Oleg’s.
D4 – C3 might take more time because of river running through them. Or maybe half time because we do all of D4 (east side then west side), then go chart off southern end of C4 and C3, then do northern half of C3 and C4.

So the one-eyed dwarf can spot a bear trap in the midst of a bunch of foilage, can scrounge for food in the wilderness, and can ride a horse into battle, but he'd be damned if he knew what the hell that shiney gold stuff is. What a pathetic dwarf. Next thing you know, he will be shaving his beared and turning to the ways of counter-industrialization (druidaism)! Or perhaps he shall take of his armour and take up the leotard and join the great traveling troup: Soup of Sun! ;P

I will get on Skype tonight, but this does not bode well if the dwarf is the guide of this party!

“Sounds like this Breeg is a down right piss-ant. I’ll be sure to pull my punches so the rest o’ ya can get a shot in on him. Good to hear on the shambler too. Thanks for the info on them beasties – I will be sure to note that down so we are more wary if another storm hits.”

That Evening
Frodirck requested that the charter party would meet him at the fire that night. He did not demand it: they were all exhausted, but he hoped that they would entertain his call. Krii and Miguel should be there for sure: they had no real ailments or wounds to speak of.

“Now that we got the grasslands covered, I suggest we consider organizing ourselves and focusing on a new goal. We got several things on the rise here: Firstly, we still have the duty of mapping out the area. That would mean going into the forest and hilly regions. We also have that Stag Lord to take care of. The Shambler we fought was in the northern wood, but the trappers I spoke to figure it will run back down south before long, so I would think we should give it its space for the time being. Then there are the posters: We got a a giant boar, a kobold problem, and a temple search. Then there is that treasure map we found.”

“Lots to do laddies, so I think we should figure out what should come first. Though it ain’t goin’ no where, I think we should search for that treasure: we are a bitt low on cash at the moment and the money could help us resupply with potions, better arms and armour, as well as get other miscellaneous supplies. If we get to explorin’ the lands some more, I say we stick to theeastern side of the green belt and only go in to the forest after all the rest is mapped. I ain’t wantin’ to pick a fight with that there mound of vines.”

Please put up some info on Shamblers in the bestiary, including their wanderlust tendencies after storms. Perhaps you should also grey Nikodim in the “Minor NPCs” list.

Subject: Trappers

Aside from getting Jargon all fixed up, there was another order of business that Frodrick had to take care of: mainly the poorly placed traps in the woods. Looking for the rag-tag woodsmen/trappers that were at the fort, Frodrick took to investigating what the hell was happening with those poorly placed traps. As he got to one of the trappers, he started his conversation.

“Hey there boy. I was wonderin’ if you knew anything about them bear traps in B3*. If it so happens ye be the trapper settin’ them up, ye need to mark ‘em better and place them not on the trails used by man, dwarf, and horse. If yer not, then I would keep my eyes open in that area or ye might find yourself with a very injured leg.”

“I think you should also let yer fellow woodsmen know that we found a giant mound of walking vines in B3*. It nearly crushed our farm girl over there, and she helped take out the small encampment of bandits in D4*. Maybe a different one of them things, but we saw one on the outskirts of B2* - so it might have a large territory and ye may want to stay out of the northwestern section of the woods all together if ye don’t want to see what it’s insides are like.”

Having dealt with one of the trappers, he beileved his due diligance was done. Now it was on to Svetlanna and perhaps the news of a warm meal in the near future.

*Frodrick gives a description of the area refferenced. Hopefully since they charted it, he has enough to go on that the hunter knows where he is talking about.

Subject: Responsibility

After the fight as the party flees
Ridding off and following beside the cart, Frodrick bellowed out to his compatriats. “Thank the goodly gods of Galorian that oversized dandilion hadn’t picked up Kyri! Looks like it ain’t following us either.”

Looking over Zeran, Frodrick tried to figure out the condition of the farmer girl. She took a massive hit that would fell most humans, and even a few dwarves… little dwarves. “Be the lass al’right there? If she be breathing, then the answer is for all intensive purposes a ‘yes’.”

That night
Frodrick let Kyri take the tent this time, and insisted that he take over her share of the night watch. They were nearing Oleg’s, so it would not take too much out of the old dwarf to stay up a few extra hours. In truth he felt ashamed and responsible for the paladin’s wounds. It was his job to keep up the defence, to make sure no one got hurt. He failed her and the rest of the party when that tree slammed its arm into the girl and the wagon.

What also peeved the dwarf off was that his age was very evident: he had not been on the battlefield for a while now, but now that he was back in action, he found that the years had not been kind to his body. He could take less hurt, and dealt even less, and he was never a limber figure to begin with. He noticed that he hunched more, and it took more effort to balance his weapon and shield. It was a nightmare only having one of his two implements of war out and equipped. There was a good side to all this though: it added a challenge to every fight.

As the night’s fire flickered down some, the dwarf added a few sticks and prodded it.

At Oleg’s
Frodrick brought Jargon into the stables, and called to Stephan for a grooming kit. The boy hustled over with the items in tow. Frodrick noted some subtled differences in the way Jargon acted towards the boy, and decided to go out on a limb. “Boy, today I wanna see how Jargon Hooves takes to you. Go about your bussiness, but if I find one hair on her body out o’ place I will tan your hide with the S%^$ shovel!”

After standing back a few minutes to see that Jargon indeed was allowing the young pup to attend to her, Frodrick went about to see what the other tenants were up to, as well as get an account on what was on their tab – the dwarf was thinking about ordering some supplies.

Subject: The Tactics of Aid Another

So I was thinking:
If Jargon Hooves and Frodrick Aid Another on the same ally, can they buff a stat each (AC and Attack)?

If so, can we have it so that Frodrick will do an Aid Another and declare what he is giving as a bonus, and presuming that Jargon is doing the same person will automatically do the opposite of Frodrick?

Shiz is going to get real if both can aid in different combat stats... especially when Frodrick gets his +3 Aid Another!

Edit: Nevermind! I just found out that Aid Another stacks... that means both can add to a character's AC or attacvk... THat will be +5 in some cases!

“Damnable Desna!” Frodrick cursed as the mound of vegetation came into view. There was little time to react, and even less to make a decision. So which was it: flight or fight? Considering there was a dead owlbear in the area – this thing might have been what took it out. So as much as he liked fighting, Frodrick would have to decline this time.

The dwarf got Jargon Hooves to move forward towards the trap while he grabbed his lance. He then shoved the lance into the trap. Keeping Jargon on the move, Frodrick motioned with his one hand to keep going. “Let’s get outta here!”

Frodrick then waited for Zeran to get the cart going.

Subject: The Dwarf and the Boy

Frodrick was less than impressed, and more than annoyed at the poorly placed traps. If he hadn’t noticed the glint of metal with his one keen eye, Jargon could have very well needed to be put down! He would not put all his resources into it, but it would inquire at the trading post who was responsible for this mess. The trapper would get a scolding and a warning - this could have really F-ed someone one up.

It may have been a poor decision coming into the forest. Tension was high, the pace was short, and Zeran’s condition seemed to be getting neither better nor worse. But the boy had committed, and had stubbornly refused to hinder the party’s progress in its mission. It did the old dwarf’s heart good to see that the young of the less-lived races could still have a sense of pride and honor. While Zeran was steering the wagon, Frodrick tried to relay his sentiments.
“Ye be as stubborn as a mule. Sweatin’ like a sinner in church and redder than a red dragon’s heart. You will be deserving a good rest at day’s end.”

This isn’t supposed to be a good relay of Frodrick’s thoughts - he has a 8 charisma and I am trying to role play it as such. Take of it what you will, but I am trying to make him still sound like a bit of a jerk in words even if his inner thoughts are far more noble/compassionate.

Please note that while Zeran is fighting the disease Frodrick will now take double shifts to cover both him and Zeran. He will not make the party wait in the morning either and will need to make endurance checks I suppose.

Topic: Kingmaker Q&A
Subject: Filth Fever 2.0

So Frodrick is willing to help kyrie in any way possible:
-He can giver her his bed roll and tent so she can sleep it off (I know someone else has a blanket... could she use that too)? This MAY be considered an aid another attempt in regards to a heal check. DM's Disgression.
-He is willing to see what he can do about salvaging healing herbs in this area - though it is late winter/early spring so there is little likelyhood of finding anything useful.
-We can get her in the bed roll and she can sleep in the cart - we could head back to Oleg's. We got a cleric who might be able to rid her body of the disease, so that may be the best course of action.

I was informed last night from Sib that it is common knowledge what filth fever looks like and this shows all the symptoms of it (aside from a festering wound) (this was stated in the post, but I didnt erally fathom it until we spoke). He also said that most people die from this diesease if it is left un attended. Frodrick, being the Code of Dragon type, will want to help Kyrie as much as he can. He does not want to put her health or life at risk.

Disease may not be the most intense thing as far as a Pathfinder mechanic is concerned, but we should take it very seriously as characters. Think of it this way:
1) Lets say Filth Fever has a DC of 12, and you need two consecutive saves in order to cure yourself. Common peeps have between -1 and +1 (so lets say 0). That means a common person, unattended, will need a 12 to save. That means 55% chance to save, or 45% fail.
2) So 45% fail their first save. No sweat right? not really. The odds stack against them as they take Con damage, lowering their Con (or increasing the DC) by 0-2 (I dont have the stats on me, but I think its 1d4 Con). SO at the best they have another 45% chance of failure, at worst a 55% chance of failure.
3) I am not going to continue with the math, but assuming the average person cannot get the wound attended, you are looking at a higher and higher chance of death. Lets just throw a average death toll of 15%. That might not seem huge, but considering the all dreadful and historically appauling Black Death killed 33% of a Europe's population, this is pretty intense.

This is why I am now stating in Q&A that perhaps our characters should take this seriously.

Furthermore: all we know is that Kyrie DOES have the fever. We do not yet know if anyone else has contracted it! Thinking in the terms of averages, taht means that if 3-4 of us have contracted it, one of us has a half decent chance of dying if left unattended.

Frodrick saw that the farm girl was starting to get the shivers. He didn’t know how bad it was, so he decided to inquire.
“Ya ok there lass? Should we camp out and let yer body recover from the sickness? It might just be a passing fever, but in this day and age, and in these parts, we should take every precaution...”
