Subject: Frodrick's reaction to a perculiar human sort

”who’re you lot? Whaddyou want?”

Frodrick had taken in the scene with little judgement. Many of the finest forgers and blacksmiths of Redbrew had also been some of the messiest. They had their own means of organization, and it was obvious that this man “Bokken” was much like they were.

However, upon hearing the man’s screech, his mannerisms, and the way he spoke made it obvious he was an outcast and perhaps even mad hermit. Frodrick bit his tongue. He knew that if they were to get this man’s dedicated assistance in the months to come, they would need a soft silver tongue, not a sharp steely one like his.

The stout dwarf let the others do the talking. In the meantime, he decided to head out of the shack and keep Jargon Hooves company. Frodrick hoped that the man was not as interested in idle chit-chat as the he sized him up to be. There was exploring to do, and with an established relationship, perhaps the man would be more willing to do commissions later.

“Come on out into the light lad, we ain’t going to kill ye without cause.”

Frodrick was glad that the young man complied with the command. Out of all the people salvaged, he wanted this one the most. He hoped that he might be able to identify more with this one, since he was a man of the hammer and anvil. That in itself demonstrated dedication, fortitude, and the willingness to do hard work over an extended period of time. And considering he would be out and about for days or even weeks on end, there was the chance this man could work on armor during those periods. Armor not only for Frodrick, but for his valiant steed.

Coming into the light, Frodrick held his hands up to show he was unarmed as he stepped forward.
“We be wonderin’ if you would show up or if maybe some beastie got yer knickers somewhere in these here woods. Since ye’ don’t who we be, let me give it to ye straight: we be here as a charter group to gain control of these here lands. As such, we thought your skills in blacksmithin’ would come in handy. So we hoped you would be willing to come quietly. Sounds like slavery, but trust me, upon yer release we will be able to give some other boons as well as yer freedom. The same goes fer the rest of the bandits we round up… presuming they behave themselves.”

“Good news all! We got some more hands to help with shop. Now where be Stefan? I want him pay attention as me an ol’ Jargon train in combat commands!”

Finding Stefan, Frodrick ushers him out of the post. The dwarf leads his steed along behind him.

“As of late I be noticin’ that this group be needin’ a lot o’ guarding. So I figured it would be best to teach Jargon how to get enemies into bad situations. The idea would be that it would either help the others catch their footing, or make the enemy loose theirs. Just watch and see what you can pick up on handling animals.

Frodrick will use Handle Animal on Jargon to work on teaching her a bonus trick: Aid.

Frodrick will use Handle Animal afterwards to scavenge for food.

Subject: Things to do

So I will be getting a RP post here in the next... 24 hrs? This will be from the time Krii kills the man in that was lanced to the present situation and then maybe some in the future to keep things moving.

One thing that I want to note is that Frodrick would recommend is properly exploring ALL the grassland hexegons. As noted, this will make it easy on Jargon Hooves, and then we dont have to worry about too much wildlife as we all figure out what were are to each other.

In the metagame sense, it will be faster to gather XP from exploring each grassland hex as opposed to the forest or hill hexes. This is easy and fast XP that should not be over looked - seeing as how a round of combat can take anywhere from a day to a week (depending on how forgiving the DM's schedule is), we could, theoretically, get through almost all the hexes without fighting... If this includes Oleg's hex, but not the road hexes, thats 16. 16*100 (I think it was 100XP per hex properly explored) is 1600 XP. that is 320 XP each.

If the DM is willing to, he could also just give easch memeber 25 XP per hex explored (as this is what it was designed for - 100/4) but in any case, we will get 16-20% to our next level up.

Just saying

I jsut read part of the post... wtf is Krii doing killing someone who is down? Apparently Frodrick's statements to the prisoners was unheard to Krii, and he will rebuke him for killing people who had given up and were offered amesty.

“I owe you a drink…”

Frodrick shook his head at the statement. “I think I catch yer drift there boy, but where in the nine hells be ye buyin’ these here drinks? Oleg might have some, but you be talkin’ like we are in some sort of city and we be drinkin’ buddies. We ain’t got time to drink – too much work to do. And I have given up on the stuff since I lost me clan. The drinkin’ of mead and ale is to be done with family and loved ones in times of great joy and celebration. We may have had a small victory here, but the fact that you be spewin’ life blood after a fight with coughs is no sign that all is well. We got a long way to go yet before we can settle into some sort of sense ‘o security.”

“And don’t be thinkin’ that just cause I be helpful and nice be meanin’ that we be friends. I give the lot of you young surface folk as much trust as I need to be, but true friendship with a dwarf takes generations of your lots’ time to secure. No offence, but we just met. I trust you with my life, and in turn you trust me with yours. Plain and simple.”

”What are you going to do with us?” The human female asked. Frodrick walked up to her shaking shield his arm. That Kressle was a rather strong for a human, his arm was going to hurt for days.
“We ain’t ones for killing folk who wish to start anew there lass. We gave the same option to y’er companions that were raiding Oleg’s the other day: stay bandits and be executed, or make amends as prisoners for a time and we let ye go. If ya choose the latter option, I will add that we will give you some skills that could either aid us as we work on our mission, or you could use to make a life back in the civilized world.”

“Y’er companions at Oleg’s thought that most o’ you were salvageable aside from Kressle. I ain’t one of hypocrisy, and so give you this one time offer to fix y’er mistakes and make something of yourselves. Take it or leave it!”

Presuming they would rather live than die.

“Good choice. I personally don’t like killin’ outside the confines ‘o battle, but I ain’t one to hesitate if it be needed either. Now then. First thing you can do is tell us if everyone here is it for this camp. I be particularly interested in one named Gavril, who as mentioned to be a black smith. Also we be hearin’ that someone named Luke is of fairly good character – he be havin’ a good word from Stefan. Also there be mention of an Adel and a Gregor. I be guessin’ that all of you, but if not, let us know now – we will find out when we get back to the fort, and if I find out yer lying, well, I say we will be getting off on the wrong foot. Mainly the one that will be so far up yer ass you’ll be suckin’ the shit off me boot.”

I will be making one at some point today to answer the question of what we will do with them. Frodrick will be saying this without consultation to the group, and he may be openly (Or taken to the side and quietly) revoked/rebuked for his words if anyone is against it.

(Edit):
Took no where near as long to make the post. Thought it might take longer. Feel free to respond. In the mean time, I say Owen starts up on the post of what happens on our way back and the next couple days there after while we recover from our injuries.

My idea would be that while Zeran rests up, the rest of the party starts exploring the plains/flat lands to the east of the Oleg's Trading Post. That is, I am thinking instead of wainting for a week or two for Zeran to recover and doing nothing, we go out, explore a hex or two, coming back to the fort after each one. We could also leave our paladin to treat Zeran so that he heals faster, though Zeran would be forced to stay in bed for those days.

Unless people are worried we will be running into verocious wildlife, I don't see a reason why we can't start with the places where we can see for a ways away (little chance for getting the drop on us).

Then once Zeran is healed, we could make our way south where (lets just play with the idea that Oleg might know a bit of the basic geography told by traders and we spoke to him on it at some point) the flatlands turn into hills. There are more areas for enemies to hide in there, so it would be ebst to go in force. Frodrick also doesnt want to go into the forest right away because it will be more difficult to navigate with Jargon Hooves, and he may have to leave his mount behind for that exploring bit. He is hoping that the group will get better at fighting as a group during the time in the flatlands and hills so that he can depend on them more and his mount less.

I am not going to post until I know exactly where everyone is in relation to each other (that is, my companions, not all the baddies).

presently I am saying Frodrick dismounts while dropping his lance and pulls out his axe. He does a quick call out to challenge Kressle (not the ability, just a way to get her out), and commands Jargon to Defend (Frodrick).

This may change if I know that my paladin and sorcerer are too far away.

I am still mind blown that I rolled a god damn 3. shitty luck.

Mother Nature is like "SLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW DOOOOWWWWWWNNNNNN".

But unless there is a major paradigm shift within Frodrick's character, he would probably want to be the warden (or some other paremeter drifting role) after all is said and done (incosequential of the actual stat boosts reflected in-game).

I also would like to say that progression seems rather good this time around. I like the rather quick pace we are doing the current events at, and would suggest we keep this up for the remainder of the adventure if it is possible. Iknow that we have been able to get thus far because we have already done this part before. I still think that we don't need to be going over things in extrodinary detail - nor do we need to discuss in character every aspect that is up for debate. It doesn't happen in actual sessions (most of the time), and it shouldn't happen here.

An hour and a half left of work... thank god.

After the execution of Happs, Frodrick turned to the other prisioners and looked at them sternly.
“I ain’t one fer amusement no more, so I got no shits nor giggles outta killin’ that fearless leader of yours. I don’t like killin’, and I hope all your of the same mind on that at least. The next little while will be hard on all of you, but do things right and well, and you’ll have a pardon. Hell, we might even be able to get all of ye’ some gold to go back to civilization with. But I want no trouble from any of you. Neither does Oleg, Svetlana, or the rest of my companions.”

The dwarf walked back and forth between them, sizing them up and trying to throw up some sort of sense of discipline. “Now Oleg, he got chores that I am sure all you with your half of brains can give him aid on. He was fixin’ a roof the other day, and I be thinkin there is more maintenance that you all can work on.”

Frodrick turned to Oleg. “Why don’t you grab this older guy here,” Frodrick was referring to Niko, “and get him to work. No sense bustin’ yer back when we got helpful hands right here.”

Then he turned to Svetlana. “We be havin’ more mouths te’ feed, which means there be more to cook. If ye be needin’ ingrediants, I am sure me and a couple others can go out and find some eadibles. In the mean time, can you show the young lass here how te’ cook a meal? Give the wench a skill to work on and make somethin’ of herself.”

If Oleg and Svytlana are willing to oblige…

Frodrick turned to the last of their captives, Stephan. “So ye know how to ride a horse. But do you know how to take care of it? I bet ye’ cumbuckets just hit the beast till it moves and feed it on your own leisure eh? Well I be damned if I see these here fine beasts ‘o burden taking unfair hardship! I will show ye the ropes on how to keep these creatures in tip-top shape, and how to raise them good and proper. By the end of your free labour, you will have a skill set that any stable master will be willing to look at when you go back te’ civilization! Now ye ain’t touchin’ my steed here until she gets te’ know you, and I can trust you with her needs. But in a few weeks time, I am sure you will be able to handle her. Now go grab a broom, a pitchfork, a mop, and a bucket o’ water. Ye be cleaning the stables fer now.”

After having set the new hands to work, Oleg went to Svetlana. “Be ye needing food for a while? I can either go off to the woods and start gatherin’, or I can ride off to town and get more supplies for you. It won’t be fair of us to leave you with our prisoners and expectin’ ya to feed them with your current rations. But don’t you worry. They will be useful to ya by the time we are through with ‘em!”

That evening, presuming Frodrick doesn’t ride out to gather supplies at the nearest town, but instead did a survival check to gather food for his allies.

Survival Check: 26 = 18 + 7 + 1 (for order bonus)

Frodrick sat down after a hard day’s work. He hadn’t gotten a whole lot for the Leventons, but it was something. It was enough to feed a good five people properly, though it was probably only going to go through three people unless Svetlana decided to go with stingy food rations.

After the group had supped, Frodrick raised the attention of Miguel. “Hey there fancy pants. Why don’tcha get the moral up with a song or tale? It be quiet in here, and my ears ain’t used to quiet!”

Presuming Miguel is willing to oblige and start doing some sort of performance.

Frodrick badgered Krii into either pulling out his deck of cards, or at least letting the dwarf borrow them. “I be needin’ them cards to entertain our new companions.” Was his rational. As the night progressed and people started to go off to bed, Frodrick went off near the stables and started to smoke his pipe while sitting in some hay next to Jarggon Hooves. “I suppose they ain’t half bad fer theivin’ folks. Just gotta push them bad habits out and show ‘em that we can expect more out of ‘em. Makes all the difference eh ol’ Jabber?”

The horse nodded her head and whinneied a bit. Frodrick looked up and saw that the young lass they had captured was partially hidden from his sight, thought she was more hiding in the dark than behind an actual structure, so once Frodrick looked up she was pretty easy to spot.
“No sense trying to sneak up on a dwarf at night lassy. This here I be trained for long days in the complete darkness of tunnels – ye ain’t hiding from me.”

Seeing that she was spotted, the girl came up before him.
“What ye be needin lass? Tanya be it again?”

“Yes. And I was wondering why you are being so nice to us. You get that man and woman to put us to work right away, but you don’t harp or hit us. You let us eat with you guys at night. And you give us song and play cards with us. That ain’t how it normally works with prosoners.”

“Simple enough: we didn’t kill ya.”

Tanya looked puzzled, and a bit worried at Frodrick’s statement. He was bad at speaking his mind most of the time. He knew that. So he figured he would elaborate a bit on it more.

“Ya see lass, if I be seeing no hope fer ya, youd have been hanging with that Happs fellow. But there be something in ya. Perhaps its faint, perhaps its just only a wee bit hidden, but its there. And I want it out here in the open fer us all. But that aint gonna’ happen if I treat you like shit and hold yer mistakes over yer head. No point in that in my opinion – that’s what death sentences are for: people who wont amount to nuthin’. So I be treatin’ ya how I want ya to end up being.”

“You don’t know me, or what I can be.”

“Perhaps.” Nodded the dwarf. “But I can only show you what ya can be. Its up to you to choose. As that ol’ saying goes: ‘Ya can lead this here horse to water’…” Frodrick said, patting the side of Jargon Hooves as he said it, “‘But ya can’t be makin’ ‘er drink.’ I just showed you a part of the life you could have if you stick with us. Is it better or worse than what you came from? I be damned if I be knowin’. That’s for you to judge.”

The girl nodded and was about to walk away, when Frodrick interrupted her flight.
“Oh, and lassy.”
She stopped to listen, though she made no eye contact.
“So long as yer be with us, I be treatin’ you like you were one of us: if any of them guards that be coming threaten or be making unwanted advances on you, you come to me you hear. Goes the same for your two friends as well. No harassment for them, and none by them either.”

“If we want to catch them off guard, we should probably leave today.”

Frodrick gave a chuckle at the suggestion of leaving so quickly. “Bit ‘o angst in you ain’t there young pup? Well, yer words be wiser than any dwarf’s I ever heard. It may not be to hard to find this camp ‘o theirs either: since they be bringin’ horses in and out of them woods to this here post, we should all be able to get out and over to their headquarters with relatively little hindrance.”

“There is, something that I am kind of hoping for though: I was wondering if we could get to explorin’ this hear land and start mappin’ it out. Get a layout of the land and get right to finding the best resources to start that kingdom out of yers’. Perhaps that comes later though? Seein’ as how them bandits of the wood may be a bit more of a threat at the moment what with them breathin’ and all.”

He didn't want to admit it, but perhaps he was just tired. He barley lifted his ax or lance up, yet he was already time for a nap. But he wasn’t about to show weakness to his new found allies. It was enough that he was the eldest by far – he was not going to be some fuddy duddy old timer that kept everyone back while talking about the good old times and how if he were in his prime he would show them what’s what. NO! He came here to die a noble death protecting the weak and trailblazing the untamed lands of this area. That meant no naps, and no holding back on the side lines. He was going to show them all that he was no old coot! He was a dwarven warrior, ready for battle as he ever would be.

Subject: Rethinking the thinking

After what the shovel wielding girl said, Frodrick subsided a bit. He thought for a moment and then looked to her and nodded.
“I suppose y’er right. Judgin’ them too quickly could be a sign o’ tyranny on our part that is just as bad as the lot ‘o em.” He then chuckles a bit, trying to ease up the tension, “It’s as I always say: give anything the benefit of the doubt, unless it be of goblin folk. Then you bury the hatchet literally.”

The battle was over, and the adrenaline in his system was down. He saw that perhaps the bandits should be given the opportunity to repent and amend their ways. But he kept his eye on the ring leader, who was quickly identified as Happs. He didn’t trust that one, and considering he was the one who ‘jested’ about fornicating with Svetlana, he was sure his ways would not allow him to change. As such, Frodrick told the rest (including Oleg and Svetlana) his thoughts. Concluding with “If we be taking action, I say we do it quickly. Passin’ judgment can take time, but the actual doing should be over n’ done with as soon as we can be. And don’t know one regret it afterwards – we will be makin’ more tough decisions before we be makin’ easier ones by the time this adventure is done I reckin’.”

Frodrick does not often mount Jargon Hooves (AKA Derpy Hooves). Jargon knows 1 trick at the moment (It was his bonus trick) and that is defend. As it stands, Frodrick and Jargon will both act as bodies to help keep things off of others. As a rule of thumb this will be Krii (for both) though if someone gets a condition such as "Unconcious", "Poisoned", or even "Bloodied" there may be a change of orders or shuffling of positions.

Frodrick will also be wanting to teach the trick "Aid" to Jargon as soon as he can. Can we have him training Jargon in the time he has off? Jargon has 0/6 standard tircks he is able to learn. His next bonus Trick is not until level 3.

Other tricks to come may include (in no particular order):
-Menace
-Serve
-Heel
-Down
-Attack
-Come
-Flank
-Watch
-Flee
-Guard

As soon as the bandits were all locked up, Frodrick got himself over to Zeran’s side and gave him a heavy slap on the back. “That be some damn fine weapon you got there Zeran me boy! I don’t think there be a beast in these lands we won’t be able to take on with that contraption on our side! Great shot and good work on that leader o’ theirs!” He then got himself over to Kyrie and gave her a pat on the shoulder too. “And good job there lass. A sold bash to the head with a tool o’ labour! Does me heart proud to see a hard working lady showin’ the rapin’ piligin’ kind what’s what!”

As the group started to look over Oleg’s goods and split the spoils of battle, Frodrick gave a hoot. “Hey Kyrie lass! There be a good lookin’ shield of wood here that seems dependable and fer sale! Might I recommend we grab it for ya? A solid defence makes for a supreme offence doncha’ know?”

Contrary to the stereotypical dwarf, Frodrick shows very little interest in any of the loot. If offered any of it, he holds his hands up and gives a slightly ungraceful rejection. “Bah! What use have I with baubles, knives, and arrows? We be in a forest – no use for monies, and I look like a old hog so jewelry be a waste on me. As fer them weapons, I be a man of me own devices. Gots me lance and gots me ax, what more a dwarf need to be slaying his foes? But more so I be a dwarven defender: a nice metal set of armor would do me and us all good, but I say this lot ain’t doin’ nothing and will serve us all less on me. Use it yerself.”

In response to Oleg’s suggestion of hanging bodies, Frodrick gives a grunt of approval. “We came here to tame the lands, and to get rid of these damnable thieves. I say having some heads on some pikes and hangin’ bodies out would send a clear message of what awaits any other of their ilk in these woods. Might I add I ain’t entirely hatin’ the thievin’ type, or believing all thieves are worthy of death – but to threaten this here couple of rapin’ Svetlana, burnin’ down their lively hood, and killin’ Oleg, I say they have their just desserts comin’. If we don’t want all to be steppin’ in to chop their heads or kick their stool beneath their feet, I be more than willin’ to oblige. I got the stomach fer it. If we ain’t in agreement with being judge, jury, and executioner, I be saying you’re in the wrong place. Best ye head back home where there is an established guard, a functional prison, and set of premade laws. As I see it, though it only be with me one eye, we be makin’ our own rules out here aside from one: eat or be eaten.”

Frodrick was amazed at the efficiency that the young ones had demonstrated in taking down the bandits. Half of the forces were brought down with one spell, and the leader laid low with a shot and a blow. All within a few seconds. “…but if our other friend here doesn’t listen to me make sure he doesn’t escape.”

Grabbing his open gob, the dwarf ruffled himself up while clearing his throat and made his mount proceed forth a bit. “Don’t worry there lad: if he makes a run for it, and your boom-stick don’t lay him low, I’ll be sure me ol’ lance of heart shish kabobin’ makes its mark.” The dwarf put his axe away and made ready to draw the lance that was stored on Jargon Hooves’ saddle.

Honestly, he hoped no chase would be made though. Damn joints were already bitching at him for getting up on Jargon.

“Sir Redbrew, I think I’ll take you up of the offer of a bit of extra protection while I use my ‘Hocus Pocus’ spells as you so kindly call them.”

Frodrick gave a grunt of acknowledgement as the young human took him up on his offer.
“Aye, so you be one of them caser sorts? Well you have me shield and ax at your disposal. Ol’ Jabber Hooves will also make sure you have a bit ‘o space to do yer stuff. Never could understand the lot of it, but I know its damn useful in turnin’ the tides o’ battle. When we are getting’ into the more detailed gist of how this fights gonna go, you’ll need to tell me what kind of tricks be up yer sleeve. Don’t want any demon snake or giant bat poppin’ up and having me kill it when it’s on our side.”

“I guess I should probably pick up a shield at some point so I can do that better… Haven’t found one that I really liked yet though.”

The dwarf gave a hearty hoot at that last bit that the girly had to say. “Ho-oh! Lassy, I don’t know how you could find one you don’t. Considerin’ you wallop foes with that shovel of yours, why not take a fryin’ pan for a shield? But don’t you fret lass, there is bound to be some hoodlum round ‘ere that has a shield you might call your own. And if ye’ be bent on fighting with one, perhaps we could do some training: figure out a way to make our defences even tighter eh?”

Frodrick took another puff from his pipe and then did a smoke ring. He blew, trying to make a second to fill the first, but it came out too fast and broke the first. “Darn it. Still can’t seem to get that second ring.”

“Should we decide to tackle their main force.”
Frodrick nodded again to this idea.
“Sounds a might bit risky. I’ve seen the stuff used in mine excavations, if the wrong person uses it, or if the right one makes a mistake, it is rather deadly for everyone. But if it comes to making a large army smaller, it could do the trick in a jiffy. Also having a large explosion might demoralize our foes. But I would hold that as our ‘ace up our sleeves’. No sense throwing a barrel o’ powder at enemies if we know we can take ‘em out without it.”

Again Frodrick tried to blow a double ring of smoke, and again he failed. Grumbling a curse in dwarven, the Frodrick then emptied his pipe and put it back in his backpack. He then turned to the Krii, quickly yet gently strumming his hands on the table a couple of times before speaking. “So, you up for some small game of cards there boy? Or you enjoy the game of solitaire? If ye care to have a go with me, I be warning ye, I am a might bit competitive with these things, and I don’t want none of that magic of yours intervening.”

Frodrick leaned forward as the information by his hosts was presented. He nodded as the details came out, and gave a mischievous smile as he started to reply. “So the lil’ rascals think that they can threaten good folk ‘o their traded goods eh? Well we be not fully informed of the lot, but I think we could do some real good teachin’ these bastards that there be a new round ‘ere.”

Leaning back once more to relax, the dwarf took another puff of his pipe while he thought out loud. “Don’t mind, I ain’t trying to take control ‘o this here lot, but the short time we spent together traveling here has given me the impression that we all believe in helpin’ the weak. So unless there be some sort of problem that is above me thick head, I say we give them a lesson they will never forget tomorrow.”

presuming the group is all for a fight

“So then, we should probably take in our resources, and figure out a plan of attack. If we figure out what each of us can do, then we will be able to take on the enemy far more efficiently. I ain’t much of a fighter anymore, though if I were a good hundred years younger I would have shown you all true dwarven battle prowess with this here ax. No: I be more of the protectin’ type now. My experiences in battle have given me the know how to protect the weaker lot that need quite to concentrate; namely the caster lot. Get me next to one, and I will be able to work well to make sure they get ‘em hocus pocus spells out on the enemy.” Taking another puff from his pipe, Frodrick let the others speak their minds on the matter. He hoped that this young lot was willing to listen to their elders…

Subject: The Spilling of Rodrick's Guts

SO here is the lil monologue Rodrick would have given to you either at at campfire or while you were all riding to the fort.

“Since we got some time before we be gettin’ to our destination – and since we will more likely than not be traveling with each other after that – I see no reason why I shouldn’t share my story with ye. I be comin’ from the mountains just beyond the Gronzi Forest, where my clan worked both above and below the surface. We were a young clan, five generations old: but our industrious hearts had us carved a grand hall and mighty forge. We were Clan Redbrew, and we were as hardy as a dwarven clan could get.

In the time we had started settling the lands that would be our territory, a great band of goblins started to arise. We pushed them back, but the lil’ bastards continued to harass us throughout the centuries. We were at war with something that could not be whipped out – a fungus that kept on coming up between our toes. But our walls were thick, our axes sharp, and our spirits steadfast. We never faltered, and never gave them an inch of our new found home. We even befriended a small Halfling village, and together we secured a trading route for the North Eastern boarders of Brevoy.

And where was I in all this? I was among my king’s honor guard. Proud was I to bear a shield for my king, and at the ready was I at all times to exchange my life for his. But I was asked to go out on a routine patrol on the trading route one day. I obliged, but heard that a Halfling ambassador had arrived to speak of business with our king. Regrettably, I paid no heed.

When we arrived at the Halfling settlement for a quick restock, I exchanged words with some of the village folk. I spoke of their ambassador, asking what business he were to be bringing up. They said that they had sent no such person.

Alarmed, I took flight with me men back to our clan’s residence. The goblins were already inside the walls though. The king was dead, and the walls had been opened: apparently one of them green skinned pieces of dung managed to be born with a brain, and learned to hide his damnable kin’s accent and slang. He used magic to disguise himself and, like the coward he was, assassinated our king with some sort of strong poison before opening the walls for his kin to enter.

A great battle was done that day. But alas, I only partook in part of it. For the first time in four hundred years our spirits faltered, and I was out of focus. I lost my balance and fell from the walls, the brush below broke my fall, but I was left unconscious for a long while.

When I came to, the lil’ shits were gone, but the entirety of my clan’s residence was on fire. Every last dwarf was dead. I fell to my knees and wept. No songs would ever be sung in the halls, never again would weapons or armor be forged by our anvils and fires, and in a few short decades, no one will ever remember Clan Redbrew.

I am old. I am tired. I long for rest and to be with my fathers in the next life. But since no songs shall be sung of me, I wish to go in the way of the warrior. I wish to die felling the foes of civilization and the allies of tyranny. I wish to die knowing that it was doing what I do best: protectin’. And so I am here, going to a forest inhabited by rabid animals, bandits, and gods know what else. But I go with hope: hope to help the humans of the nation of Brevoy, and to have one last good fight before going to sleep.”

Frodrick lead his own mount to the stables. He had grumbled at the coachman who grabbed Jargon Hooves’ reigns as the dwarf was dismounting. He wanted to make sure that Hooves was taken care of properly: he was a very particular breed of horse that had the perfect height and weight for a dwarf, and he would be very hard to replace if something were to happen to him. That and the fact that the two had a very strong bond, being the only two to survive the last goblin raid on his Clan’s stronghold.

“Get yer’ hands off me horse if ye be so kind!” He called out, only a shred of grouchy tone in the voice. “Jargon Hooves don’t be trustin’ much of the folk lacking the beard. She ain’t too fond of taller folk either. So ye be doubly distrustin’ ‘er eyes.”

Grabbing the reigns, the old dwarf listened to the woman Svetlana as she spoke of things. Main one that interested him was stew.

After tending to his mare, Frodrick returned to the main area and sat at one of the tables. It was then that he threw down his pack and lifted the hood from his head, showing his right eye to be covered by an eye patch. Rummaging through his backpack, the dwarf pulled out his pipe and some tobacco. Sitting back against the table he watched all the young ones go about their business. He didn’t hate the lot, nor did he really distrust them, he just felt like they wouldn’t want to hear an ol’ dwarf’s ramblings. He knew that he sounded crotchety, and since he spilled his guts on the matter of his history, he felt like that senile old man that everyone has to bear with just because he is old. So he sat back and remained silent, smoking his pipe and looking forward to a nice warm meal cooked by someone other than him – he cooked about as good as his horse could.

Frodrick remained silent while the others settled in, but as Svetlana returned and stated “I must say, we were worried you’d be too late – they arrive in the morning.” his eyebrow raised. He took his pipe out of his mouth and leaned forward as he addressed his host.
“What now be ye’ speaking about lassy? I ain’t likein’ much o’ the sound of this ‘they’ ye speak of. And if my companions here have half a brain, quarter a heart, and a smidgin’ of respect, they would too. If there be hooligans botherin’ ye and yer husband, say the word mam, and I be giving them the thoughts on me mind – delivered by me ol’ friend here.” Frodrick patted his ax that was attached his backpack by a strap.

Achuak checked his crossbow once again. He didn’t want anything to go wrong down here – or at least get any worse. He reported while he inspected his weapon. “There was a single mite in the first room I entered going the other direction. She was feeding three large centipedes. I decided to fall back because I was outnumbered.” With his inspection completed, Achuak was reassured that his weapon would not fail him.

The kobold looked up in surprise to Sylvia’s next question. He really didn’t know what to say, because they had far more to worry about at this point. “We must first worry about those still alive Sylvia, before we can worry about our dead. It pains me to see even one of my kin fall, but there are far more out there in the forest than in here, and we shall deal with them all in good time. For the moment focus on the task at hand: We must find the statue and save my tribe from total extinction.”

Achuak then looked at Mikmek. “If you are strong enough, head for the exit. If not, stay here and we shall come back for you. If we do not return in ten minutes time, you must attempt to flee. Is this understood?” After waiting for a confirmation by Mikmek, Achuak took point and pressed on, whispering, “I shall take lead – I can see well in darkness and your lights will only give us away. Hold back some please.”

Reginald was rather fascinated by the newest person to come in. His attire was composed of furs, and his hair was unkempt. Experience was in the man’s eyes, and a focused disposition was about him. Tipping his hat and scratching Colonel Kreed who was at this point eating a berry on his master shoulder, Reginald decided to make conversation.

“Greeting there good chap. Haven’t seen you around before, but then again I haven’t seen anyone around here before aside from the inn keep! Ha Ha!”

Pulling up a chair next to the stranger, Reginald sat down. “The name’s Reginald. Reginald Lockmeister: retired merchant, learned wizard, and budding adventurer at your service!” The middle aged man then took off his hat and gave the man a wink. He then pat Colonel Kreed once more, while gesturing the new patron to his pet and friend. “And this here is Colonel Kreed – Don’t bother where he got his rank from, I haven’t the slightest idea. Some traveling bard stated that this was his full name, and Kreed is ‘spelled with a K’. But enough about me, I was curious: are you by chance one who partakes in the fur trade? I have not had much experience in that trade, so I couldn’t say whether you were a trader yourself or not.”

Adjusting his monocle, Reginald now took in a better look of the man now that he was closer, but listened to the man’s response with all due attention as well, for such is the way of a gentlemen.
