Finish up B1, then go to C1 then D1. Go up north C2, then B2. If things are going well we can hit B3 before getting abck to Oleg's.

Subject: The power of Frodrick compels you!

Frodrick, seeing that the mist creature had retreated once more, dove forwards to the Jack-o-lantern. The dwarf waved his axe at it menacingly to ward it away.
“Begone with ye spirit of malice! Ye ain’t goin’ to get no blood shed from none of us this night! Back to the grave with ye before I send ye there me self with an axe to the front of ya and a boot from behind!”
The threat was only half-hearted. Frodrick had no idea what he would do if the thing decided to fight them. He had heard that ghosts were not affected by metal weapons, and that they ignored defensive armour as well. Frodrick felt an anger foam up because he and his friends had in fact been duped by what seemed like a goofy pair of monsters. But another part of him was freighted: he did not like facing foes he could not face off against with his axe and shield. He was hoping that the thing would just float away now that it knew that they knew what it was.

Subject: Can Frodrick reasonbly say they are still in battle?

So I was wondering if Frodrick knew what was going on with this whole Gaseous Form bussiness. I personally know very little about the spell and how it works because I have never used it before as a DM or otherwise (that I can remember anyways).

1 - Can Frodrick see the gaseous form? I mean, we are in a mist/fog in the middle of the night. He has dark vision, but can he see that this gaseous form creature is different from the mist?

2 - Does Frodrick know that the creature is still around? Even if Frodrick can tell that the gaseous form is there, perhaps Frodrick is believeing the thing is going back to hell (which he had declared earlier). It wouldn't be too farfetched to think that the thing died, evaporated, and is now going back toa different plane of existence (kinda like how demons die theatrically).

3 - Does Frodrick know that he can attack it in this present state? Logically speaking, even if Frodrick could see the creature in its new form, and knew that it was still able to chose between fight or flight (literally), Frodrick would assume he could not attack a mist and hurt it.

I do not really want to make a post until I know what Frodrick knows, sees, believes. My personal hunch is to follow #2 - he sees, but thinks its defeated since it spazed before changing. Then perhaps #3 if #2 is false.

Could you give me some insight as to what Frodrick might be processing? If you believe I have a good handle on the above, I will make a post that is linked to number 2.

By-the-by, the feat I reffered to in the title of my last post is Valiant Steed. I was considering taking it before, but now I want it even more. This way it will be possible/easier to get Jargon Hooves to join in fights or be within an area of unatural aura creatures (like wraiths and w/e this thing is called).

Subject: Totally getting that super feat for Jargon next level...

In all the battles that Jargon Hooves had partaken in, she had never once showed fear. This thing was more than bad news if it struck fear into a battle-hardened steed. And it brought a surge of fury into the heart of Frodrick at thought of his own mount being disgraced.
“Damn you friggin’ bastard! You ain’t goin’ nowhere but back to hell this night!” With axe in hand, the dwarf barrelled in after the creature. He had seen that everyone’s steel was not effective against it - it must be of powerful magicks in order to resist steel so hardily. A new tactic would have to be employed. His weapon was not designed for such a maneuver, but Frodrick swung is axe low. If he was lucky, he would be able to hook it onto one of the creature’s legs and trip it to the ground. There were a lot of factors involved in thsi gambit, and one of the most prominent was that he had little experience in the ways of undertaking this maneuver. It also didn’t help that he didn’t have much in the ways of strength.
Frodrick prayed to Gorrum, Erastil, and any other gods that might be listening - hoping that one might guide his axe fair and true.

-move action: 5 ft. step
-Standard Action: Trip attempt

So for next round of combat:
-Free Action: Call Jargon Hooves to Aid Another (AC) for Miguel (Jargon may or may not be able to do that this round).
-Swift Action: Challenge Monster to give everyone +1 attack.
-Move Action: 5 ft step to try and flank/make my way to flanking.
-Standard Action: Attack defensivley with battle axe.

Subject: Preped and ready

During the surprise round: Frodrick picked up his shield that was beside his bed and got his weapon ready to fight since the group was hell-bent on going into the fog. (Trait allows for drawing weapon as a free action during surprise round).

During the first round of combat: Frodrick scrunched his nose in disgust at the creature which had just attack Zearn. “GORRUM’S BLADE* THAT THING IS UGLY!” Now was not the time for such observations though, and Frodrick was sure that Zeran would be able to elaborate more throughout the battle on the thing’s appearance, as he had done most other opponents thus far. “By Hanspur you are the most disgusting thing I have ever seen, I'd rather kiss Happs right now then have you walking." Yup. No need for Frodrick to talk, Zeran had no problem doing it, and doing it better.

Quickly fiddling with his shield, Frodrick picked up on the maneuvering cue Zeran gave, and ran in to make sure that he was between the firearm expert and the new opponent. Though instructed to use his axe, Frodrick had other plans. He was still tired, and though he would like to hack the thing to bits, it was time for team work.

“Flank it!” Frodrick called out, bearing his shield. He didn’t have time to set up a fully prepped defense, but this would have to do for the moment.

-Move action: equip shield
-Move action: move to be adjacent to enemy and between Zeran and it (even if promote AoO)
-Next turn (unless things change greatly): Total defence.

-Jargon Hooves will act on her own for now. She should have her armor on b/c she has endurance, and she knows that a threat is in the vicinity. I will allow Sib as the DM to decide what she will do as an Int 2 creature that is trained for combat who has probably been woken up rudely.

I will update later, but outside of tricky fry and sinister undead, Frodrick would also point out that it could also easily be a bandit. He will agree that it COULD be someone in actual need of help, but given they are in the stolen lands and in a fog, the group cannot give the benefit of the doubt. There is just too much at risk.

After being informed that there was a cry for help, Frodrick shook his head.
“We are in untamed lands here. If there is a voice calling for help, we can help, but we can’t go rushing in. The fog is thick, and yer torches will do little good in overcoming it. I have heard tell of mischievous critters that play pranks, and haunting spirits who lead others to their doom. Either of these could be a possibility in this case, and the environment would play to their advantage. I say we call out and inquire more. They can explain themselves if they be of living stuff. If they refuse to answer, then we stay on alert and otherwise ignore them. I ain’t goin’ into no fog ‘with me pants down’ as it were.”

I am wondering: does anybody know even the slightest glimmering of what a Will'o'whisp is amoungst our group?

I mean, I would suppose that we wouldn't know that they are abberations that feed off fear and are immune to magic, but probably more along the lines of words from huntsman, trackers, commoners, or perhaps even Oleg, Svetlana, or one of our other more connected NPCs?

"The Will'O'Whisp is a floating light that lead travellers into deadly situations. They are OBVIOUSLY ghosts that have died in the areas they haunt. So if you see a distant light like that of a lantern, stay away from it!"

Subject: Repentance

After the boisterous happenings of that evening, Frodrick was all but spent. He had been given a dagger and worried that someone was going to frame him. Then he finds out that one of the people he vouched for had every intent of betraying them, and was manipulating others into doing his bidding. Then there was the hostage situation. If Zeran hadn’t been where he was, who knows what would have happened to Adela.

And it all came down to judgment - poor judgement. Judgment that Frodrick had granted. It shamed him, and he wished to unleash it upon Niko - perhaps cutting his head off, or at least kicking the stool from under his feet. but that would not fix the issue: what he wanted to do was the cowards way out. He had to man-up and face his deficiencies head on. And that meant doing something he hated - almost as much as goblins. Frodrick had to apologize.

Finding Johd, Frodrick mumbled to the “old” cleric that he wished to have a word with him in private.

(Presuming Johd, though probably hesitantly or after an initial hostile reaction, obliges the request).

“I uh… I want to say something that barely no one ever has heard from me mouth. I want to say… I’m sorry. I see now that I can very well be shit when looking upon others’ character. I over stepped my rights and my honor when I said them words to you. I know no words o’ mine be worth scatt now, but I hope to prove in actions that I am repentant of my offense to ye.”

It was a hard thing for the old dwarf to say, but he said it. He quickly went back to the stables to sleep it off. That was harder than fighting a thousand bandits, and the dwarf was exhausted.

Topic: D&D Next
Subject: D&D Next

So I found out that D&D Next (5.0) is being playtested atm. I am wondering if anyone is playtesting it, what they think of it, and whether they will invest in this system when it gets published.

My thought: I am kinda liking it from what I have gathered. I havn't actually played it yet, but it seems to be less dependant on feats and skills and more on roleplaying - not quite minimalist but pretty bare bones compared to 3.5, 4.0, and Pathfinder.

It also looks like numbers will not be going up substatially throught the game. This means that there will be less power creep throughout the game as a whole. I know my one friend in Pathfinder has something like 50 AC, and his Will (lowest saving throw) is something like a 14 or 16. As it is, the DM doesn't bother throwing any resources at him because he is almost impossible to hit.

That doesn't seem likely in this game.

I also like the idea of "advantage" and "disadvantage". So when you attack while stealthed, you get the advantage on an attack: you get to roll two dice and take the best one. Kind of nice when you made a plan and it all goes down the hole because your first and only roll was poor.

Average characters will only be getting 4 feats (1,3,6,9) that give interesting bonuses.

Here is the website for those who have not heard of it thus far:
https://www.wizards.com/dnd/dndnext.aspx

I want to hear what others have to say about this system!

Subject: Daggers and Dreams

The new mystery presented to Frodrick left him stumped and almost haggard. Perhaps he was reading into the events like he had read into the ones with Jhod – mayhaps he was jumping to conclusions – but it looked like someone was trying to frame him. What was more, it was someone he was vouching for. Frodrick stopped then. “Did I just feel remorse for me words on that windbag cleric?” He shook his head. Now was not the time for that. He needed to get this blade back to whomever it belonged to. And there was going to be no sneaking about it.

Scouring the post, Frodrick looked for Kesten. Was he asleep at this hour, or on duty? Frodrick didn’t know how they divided their shifts, but this was something that needed to be brought to his attention in particular.

Presuming Frodrick finds Kesten, whether he is asleep or awake, Frodrick will talk to him when the guard is fully awake.

“I don’t know the details here, but it seems one o’ your guard’s daggers grew legs and got comfy on my belt tonight.” Frodrick handed Kesten the dagger. “I didn’t get a good look or ear for whom these legs were, but they bumped into me and then the dagger was latched around me belt. I got an Idea who it might be, but I don’t want to go accusing anyone until I got some solid evidence…” (I am going to say that Kesten knows of Frodrick’s outburst on poor ‘old’ Johd) “I seem to have come to understand to hold back me tongue ‘till I know the whole story now. Could ye return that there weapon to its rightful owner and make sure them guards be guarding their own stuff as well as that of others? I got an investigation to undergo.”

As Frodrick walked away, he sighed. What was he going to do? He knew nothing of gathering evidence, questioning people, or any of that stuff. He would need help, but who to turn to? Oleg, the guards, and perhaps even Svetlana would have a extreme bias on almost all the bandits, so they would not be of use in leading out an investigation. And Johd was not someone he could trust at the moment, nor would the priest in turn trust him. So Frodrick would need to turn to one of the other charter members.

Zeran was a good boy, but was better at shootin’ shit with his gun and hitting on the ladies then being subtle. Kyrie was a great source of inspiration and a beacon of hope in the nature of people, but she would more likely to go on a tangent about carrots and weeding then actually help him in his endeavors. Krii, though rather level headed, none-the-less disturbed the dwarf. There was something about his physical body that seemed off, and his stoic personality at times was as frustrating as Zeran’s overtly emotional character.

Then there was Miguel… well, now that Frodrick thought about it, he would probably be the best to go to in this situation. He was level headed, able to take in several factors and come out with a sound plan. He may be young, but he had a certain wisdom about him that was beyond his years, and he was liked by most everyone in the post. He also seemed to have a knack in a lot of skills that Frodrick didn’t have. It helped that he had a silver tongue too, one which he only used sparingly as opposed to being loose.

Indeed, he would have to go to Miguel about this. If the human would hear him out, perhaps he could help him investigate the issue with him, or at least give him advice on what to do. Frodrick knew that he would have to do something he was absolutely horrible at in any case: be subtle.

After find Miguel, Frodrick took him aside and gave him the story. He then explained what was on his mind.

“I don’t know what to do here. I believe it is Adela, but I ain’t certain about that. I could just accuse her, but what good would that do? Especially if she wasn’t the one? And just giving this story to everyone to hear would only sow distrust among the group for all the one-time bandits. Considerin’ that tensions are high as it is, we can’t be having that! What are your thoughts on this matter boy?”

Presuming Miguel agrees, but little can be done this evening, Frodrick goes to sleep at the stables as per his new habit. It is at this time a scene unfolds within the realm of dreams, or perhaps nightmares.

“LET NOT ONE ‘O THEM SURVIVE THIS DAY KIN!” Frodrick screamed over the clash of steel and burning flames to his fellow dwarven soldiers, “THEY MAY HAVE KILLED OUR KING, BUT THEY AIN’T GOT US TILL EVERY REDBREW BE IN THE HALLS OF OUR ANCESTORS!”

Before a slightly younger Frodrick was a scene of carnage and despair, so the battle cry given by his fellow warriors was less than normal. Many women and children were strewn about the ground, their carcasses being eaten by worgs and goblin dogs. Goblins terrorized the horses, having tied up dwarves to hooked chains and jabbing them into the flanks of noble steeds, leaving those tied to be dragged to death by fleeing equestrians.

This was the surface wing of Clan Redbrew’s city. Most of the complex was subterranean, but this was a particular grand entrance that was used for establishing a type of surface trade with the local halflings as well as any caravans making their way through the ________ Mountains. Frodrick and his crew had hoped to return in time to aid their kinsman in defending their new home, but it was obviously too late. A runner had managed to escape the onslaught and meet Frodrick as he rode in. Their king Rundor Redbrew was dead, assassinated by a goblin wizard who took on the guise of a Halfling ambassador.

And now he fought, but for what? Honor? Revenge? A scream could be hared: it was a young dwarfling, his whiskers just barly proding out of his face. He had a burning leg of a chair in his hand and he was fending off a couple of goblinoids that were about the same size as him. Behind him coward even younger kin. NO! Not for honor! Not for revenge! For others! To protect what I hold dear with all me strength, just like that young one!

Frodrick let out a new battle cry, but this one was with feeling. His scream chimmed through the battlefield like a hammer on an anvil at closing time in a smith. Others heard, and others watched as Frodrick rode forward on Jargon hooves. Watched as he scewerd not one, not two, but three goblins with his enchanted lance. They watched as he jumped from his steed, drawing an axe bestowed to him by his king, and watched as he cleaved the rest of the child-attackers to bits. Frodrick then grabbed Clan Redbrew’s flag, which was attached to a pole on Jargon’s saddle. With gusto he waved it for all to see, screaming with all his breath his late Lord’s name. “REDBREW! RUNDOR REDBREW!”

New emotion run through the battle field, the rest felt his spirit. The tide was turning, even if they were outmatched. Then a smug and sharp voice whispered from behind him.
“Why bother? In the end you have lost.” Frodrick turned to see a goblin, dressed an cloths of high quality and multiple colours. He was adorned with large looped earings, a couple necklaces, and sinister spikes on his fingers. He smiled at Frodrick with a sort of glee one could only see in the most decpicable of creatures. One that not only enjoyed victory, but the suffering it wrought on others. It turned up a claw as it spoke.
“Your king has died by this hand. I used most of the poison on him, but I think there is just enough to break you as well. With the extract of a linorm, it is a magical poison that has the ability to ruin one’s body and make them as clumsy as a new cadet at the sword.”

The goblin couldn’t even finish his monologue. Frodirck was charging him with his axe in hand. The two fought, and in the end Frodrick managed to kill the cur, but not before getting a couple scratches across the cheek. His fortitude held out though, and he needed to be elsewhere. He needed to protect his younger kin.

Racing to the top of the stone palisade. Jargon was below stamping on asailing goblins with gusto, and Frodrick knew she could take care of herself. But as he fought up top, he found something was wrong. His moves became more sluggish, and not because of his old age. It was as if his muscles were forgetting where they were supposed to go. In the end he started to get winded, and then something hard hit him. The goblins had made an improptue trap out of various debris. Over the palisade he went. Crashing through some trees and landing in some bushes. Sight dimmed, and all sound was lost. Much like the rest of his kin.

Frodrick woke up with a start. Staring through his one eye, he scanned the area, and looked at his person to make sure nothing else had made its way onto him since he went to sleep. Nothing new. He leaned back in the straw he was sleeping in, and took a deep breath. Never again. He would stand as a zealous stalwart with this new budding kingdom. Where he had failed with his own kin, he would be sure to prevail with the lesser lived ones. To Protect. That was his one objective.

Slowly and hesitantly, Frodrick settled back into a slumber. One that was without dreams, thankfully.

Subject: The Cleric's got ballz

It didn't sit well on Frodrick that he was getting lied to his face. The gal this man had, not only in holding something back, but also using age as a reason to not do his own work.
“Ye be sayin’ yer a man o’ Erastil eh? I ain't one much for religion, but I am a bit interested in this god o’ yours.” Frodrick started with an upbeat attitude and open smile (though it was still mostly covered by beard hair), as if he was getting interested in Erastil and his dogma. “Ye say simple folk like him because he has simple laws. I like that too. Especially the part on ‘lead by example’. So if ye be a cleric for him, why ain’t ye be practicing it?” His smile disappeared and he looked rather stern at the cleric. “Ye come in hear askin’ for us to more-or-less find a temple in the middle of bandit and gods know what else infested unmapped territory and say there is monstrous bear guarding it. Then you say to help you cause your old!”

Frodrick, his fists clenched, though he showed no sign of getting physical. “And what’s more, I can tell ye be holdin’ back on something, if not downright lying to me! Right now I gotta say I am not in any mood to be doin’ ye any favors! At least not while your hear lazing about in the safety of or patrons’ walls.”

At this point, Frodrick was wagging his finger in front of the cleric’s nose, ignoring any verbal retorts given to him by the man or anyone else. “You want to see this temple? You come with us! And don’t give me none of that ‘old’ bullshit! You ain't know nothin’ ‘bout age! I be older than you even in relation to our races’ standards, and I be out there exerting myself with no complaint!”

“Cleric of Ol’ Deadeye! Ha! How about you stop saying you’re a worshiper of his, and show us you’re one! Then not only will I oblige you, but will earn a bit o’ dwarven respect, which can’t be won by cheap words. As it stands, I be seeing all these here once-bandits as being higher in my eyes than you! They may have done things in the past, perhaps they even be hating their work. Hell, they were coerced into it as opposed to desiring a change! But I be damned if any one ‘o us says their efforts aren't admirable!”

Presuming that Jhod is defensive, and not willing to apologize or try to reconcile…

The dwarf physically waved Jhod’s retorts away while giving a boisterous “Bah!” Turning around, he looked to Svetlana and Adela and nodded.
“Thank you two for the meal. Now I shall excuse myself – Jargon Hooves needs a proper grooming, and then I need me tobacco. I will be sleeping with the horses tonight: better to sleep with the stench of horse droppings and hay then share a roof with someone who spews religious feces from his mouth!”

“So we be heading back now? I suppose that there poison be hurtin’ ye human folk more than it would a dwarf. That horse be looking a bit saggy too. Guess it be a sound idea to head back and make our orders on winter cloths and all that shit as well.”

Frodrick threw his axe into its straps at his back, and then went to set up his lance in Jargon Hooves’ saddle. While he was at the saddle, he picked through a different side pouch and grabbed a stick of smoked rabbit jerky. Svetlana – gods bless her merry little heart – had made some for the company as an easy trail ration. Some berries and oats were also in the food pouch, but it was running close on empty. Would be best to get back to Oleg’s and restock on food and water too.

Back at the post the following day, Frodrick had made his rounds with the prisoners. He paid particular attention to Stefan and what his progress in the ways of stable boy. It seemed Oleg was keeping him busy, and the place was well organised and clean (or as clean as a place could get in regards to a creature’s lavatory). Frodrick nodded in approval.
“Good work boy.” He muttered. Putting Jargon in the stables, Frodrick made sure to instruct the boy not to touch her – the dwarf planned on taking care of her later once other business was taken care of.

Finding Oleg, he put in his order for a warm WINTER BLANKET and WINTER COAT. “I sure as hell ain’t putting up with that fluffy white stuff anymore! We will be ready next time it comes falling down on our heads!” He declared to no one in particular, though Oleg was the closest one nearby.

A bit confused, Oleg inadvertently inquired “What are you babbling about?” Frodrick gave him an answer in the form of a narrative primarily made of curses towards the surface world’s weather.

When he was done with that he marched on over to Svetlana. “Beggin’ your pardon mam’, but you think you could rustle up some more of that jerky if I got some more rabbits? We will be heading back out in a day or two and our provisions are running low.”

Finding Krii and Miguel, Frodrick took them to one side to inquire about their horses.
“Hey there you two, I was wondering if mayhap you would want me and Stefan there to start working with yer horses. They seem to spook rather easily, and considerin’ the work we be doing, I thought maybe we should work on getting them more tolerant of violence: maybe even get them to fight back a bit! It will take a fair while to get them up to par, but any investment is worth time. As for training price: I would say that up front gold ain’t going to work, but if I be needin’ a favor in the future I will ask it of you later.”

Presuming Svetlana is willing to help with the food rations that we are not actually keeping count of.
Making use of some twine that Svetlana had let the old dwarf borrow, Frodrick was now a fair distance away from the post. He rode out with nothing except a few provisions to help him trap, his axe, his shield, and his sleeping gear. He had gotten Jargon to ride out a fair bit so that he was on the outskirts of the forest. He let his mount rest in the plains while he went a little ways into the wood where he would start laying out traps for rabbits.

I am making the assumption that we get back to Oleg’s about mid-day to late afternoon. After doing a little bit of business, Frodrick rides to the outskirts of the forest to start trapping. The party can tell him how long they plan to stay at the fort – I am guessing a couple days while they recover from poison damage. During this time, Frodrick will be by himself with Jargon Hooves trapping, though if any problems arise (such as wolves) He will get on Jargon and flee back to the post. Any who wish to join him may do so, he can even “teach them” how to trap (AKA make them Aid Another).

Survival flat rolls to gather food per day (use as many as Frodrick is staying out for – I will add mods when I get home)

I can see both sides of reasoning behind the alchemists fire, but I thought I should bring it up anyways. We know the spider is greviously hurt in character - it stopped coming out until we goaded it on. As such, we know another strike or two will fell it. Do we really need to use an alchemists fire to get the job done? It is safer b/c of the whole poison bit, but I can see a lot more useful thing to do with it than kill a spider.

In the end, it is Nick's (and ultimately Krii's) call. I just wanted to make a quick note.

This isn't an arguement or debate - do w/e you want. I am just throwing a thought out before you post.

“Damn the thing to hell!” Frodrick cursed as he saw that Kyrie’s defences had been penetrated. “And damn this stupid contraption!” He referred to the trap door.

He then looked at Krii as something dawned on him as he hacked. “Do you think that there liquid fire will destroy any loot the creature might inadvertently have in its den?” He felt like a fool for thinking that the fire would be a great way to purge the den!

Frodrick guffawed as his lance hit home. The spider went reeling back into its lair, but the pools of blue ichor indicated that it was seriously injured if not dying. “Come on out and taste my steel you oversized foot stain!” He knew that his words did nothing to the creature, but it felt good to scream and holler at something – it was the second best thing he did aside from taking arrows to the knee.

Seemingly all in one motion, Frodrick dropped his lance, drew his axe, and manoeuvred Jargon Hooves around the trap entrance in a manner where neither would be in the way of Zeran’s boom stick. Then he waited. He would see if the damn thing was more hungry than hurt. If so, and it revealed its gashed body once more, it would face Frodrick’s axe before it had a chance to pounce on anyone else.

If the creature decided to lay low and recover from its wounds, then Frodrick would be smashing the door in and letting the ranged folk have their way with it. Frodrick was not going to let this thing survive, and his reasoning was twofold: first of all, it would cause a problem later if they decided to populate this area with farmland – killing it now would save them the trouble later. Secondly, the bones indicated that there were humanoids amongst the piles of bones. Perhaps there would be a bauble or two the group could use. Admittedly, anyone who fell to this thing probably had nothing spectacular to offer in their remains, but coin is coin, a dagger is a dagger, and nothing is nothing. Considering the distance they had from civilization, gathering any supplies would be essential to their survival… Then there was the fact that Frodrick relished a good fight and a confirmed kill.

So Frodrick and Jargon waited, over the trap door, ready to strike the killing blow. The dwarf then smirked, and uttered his command to Jargon, a whisper in her ears. “Aid me”. The horse whinnied and nodded its head, almost like she was in agreement with his command. Together, they would fell this beast if it was stupid enough to show itself.

“Gods damn it all to the ninth layer of Hell!” Frodrick cursed, partially spooked from the sudden movement and aftermath of the attack. He hadn’t got a good look at the critter, but he knew it was huge. His brethren had spoken much about large vermin living in the tunnels that they had mined, but he had never actually seen one before!

Gathering his wits, Frodrick ushered out a command to Krii. “Get yer horse outta here before it makes both of ya’ joining the bones of this here lot!” Retrieving his lance which was latched to one side of his military saddle pointing upwards, Frodrick prepared to set a charge up in the event that the monstrous arachnid decided to come out and play. If not, he would probably go help Krii with his mount. Watching the horses whiney as they were spooked Frodrick grumbled. “Damn kids and their want of pets…” He lifted his lance in one hand while holding Jargon Hooves’ reigns in the other.

I will be sure to rewrite my post accordingly.

EDIT: And done. As an interesting side note, I talked to my sister about the menitionings of spiders in winter. She confirmed that insects and arachnids do not last long outside in winter. Then she made a very interesting point: what if they look like spiders, but are not exactly like spiders?

She elaborated and said that scientists guesstimate that dinosaurs, though seeming to look like reptiles, were not actually reptiles: they were warm blooded. Something along those lines could be thrown in a fantasy world without ANY of us (or our characters) really needing to know. It was a fun little learning experience / reflection on how to accept what we would believe to be impossible in our world as possible in another.

Fun times.

Do you think that you could make the hexes we have explored in a different colour so that we know exactly which ones have been completed?

I suggest red (green's compliment) unless someone is colourblind.

Subject: The Cold & the Snow

“I can feel it in me bones… it’s gonna snow. And seeing as only one o’ us has the essentials to traverse in that kind of weather, I be saying we are going to have to wait it out. We have the provisions if it lasts a while, and we got some wood in the wagon to make a fire. So we best be settling in before it hits us like an ogre’s club.”

“Sorry if ye young whippersnappers think ye can tough it out – maybe ye can and I am just being old, but too often people underestimate the power of nature, and overestimate their abilities. So I am drawing a line here: ye can all go on without me if ye want, but I be staying here and setting up a shelter. I will help out anyone who wants to join me.”

(I italicised “wood in the wagon” as an indicator that I am assuming as a non-countable item we have some in stock. If not, I will edit/modify the post.)

Presuming Frodrick is right in his belief that it is going to snow, and some to all of the group stay with him.

The tent was not designed to house five people, but it was better than being outside. Even if it was not a storm blustering out there, even the slightest gust made chilled the flesh. Frodrick started to smoke his pipe in the tent. Perhaps some of the others didn’t like the smell of his tobacco in the confined space, but he would be damned if he couldn’t smoke in his own tent!

Not too many of the group had proper bedding for these conditions either: Kyrie had proper traveling gear, Krii had a heavy blanket, and Frodrick himself had a tent – combined it was enough for a single person to get by comfortably. It was a learning experience.

Honestly, Frodrick was surprised that he had forecasted properly. He had been out on the surface more than most dwarves of Clan Redbrew, but still that was not enough for him to feel experienced in being a guide of it. The dwarf just hoped that the “feelings in his bones” would keep him aware of what to do in this alien, gods forsaken land. According to the posters and trappers that were about the trading post there are plenty of bandits, kobolds, and wildlife that made this place inhospitable. Now they could add weather to the list as well. It would be best not to have armor on during the cold and hot weather now that he thought about it… especially metal armor if they ever got the chance to get the stuff.

Outside, Jargon Hooves whinnied. The sound sent a pang of sadness into the old dwarf’s heart. He didn’t like the idea of keeping his mare out in the cold, but there was very little he could do about it. He left her untied, since she was one whom Frodrick could trust to stay nearby. This meant that if a wind ever did pick up, she could navigate around the wagon to take cover from it. But with no blanket, it was up to the horses to group up to keep warm.

“Miguel, sing us a song or tell us a story there laddie. I would prefer yer screeching to that of this dead silence we got goin’ on. Them beasts ‘o burden out there ain’t no song to me ears either.”

It was going to be a long night to wait out this snowfall… hopefully it would only be a night, and not any longer. Indeed, this was a learning experience for them all. Next time they got to Oleg’s, Frodrick would be ordering proper winter gear for both himself and Jargon hooves.
