How long has it been since Chiron summoned Prajna just before setting out for the house?

Also, the Governor says it's a three hour ride and then says to travel 1 1/2 hours south to reach the destination... is the 3 hour estimate for a round trip?

I'm trying to do the math to figure out how long it'll take to get down there if Prajna's running. On the overland charts, an hour and a half of travel could be anywhere from 4 1/2 to 9 miles depending on the mode of transportation.

Prajna can run for 17 rounds without a problem, after that, she'll need to succeed on a CON check every round to continue running. With the Endurance feat, her modifier for that check is +7. The DC is 10 on the first round and +1 per round after that (11, 12, 13...)

If she makes it at least up to the DC15 check(22 rounds of running) we'll have covered a mile already. When she eventually fails, Chiron will dismount, spend a use of turn undead to give her fast healing 2 for 10 rounds, and walk her slowly (only a single move action / turn) for about a minute or so, and then repeat the whole process of run-rest-run until we're there.

Assuming she succeeds at the DC14 check during every block of running, we'll average a mile every 3 minutes.

"Very well," Chiron thought as Ardulace walked away. "I did my duty in offering."

"Governor Bailash, I would like audience with you tomorrow morning, if that is acceptable. I would like to discuss my involvement in aiding your town. Right now, I must ride south. Good evening to you all."

With that the paladin turned and quickly made his way out of the mansion and over to Prajna. "Hey there, beautiful." he said, as he stroked her thick mane. "We've got some running to do and I'm afraid you're not going to like me very much by the time we get where we need to go."

He pulled himself up into the saddle, and patted Prajna on the neck one more time before bringing the horse up to a medium trot and maneuvering through the streets and out of town. "I'm sorry..." Chiron whispered in Prajna's ear as the passed through the gate leading out of town, and he snapped the reins and spurred the horse into an all-out gallop heading south to the Temple of Ilmater.

Rising from the table, Ardulace bowed to the Governor. “Please do not think me ungracious or unappreciative of thy hospitality, Your Lordship, but I have wounds from this morning’s encounter that require my attention.”

"Many thanks, Seluumiel," says Lacey, while she retrieves her bow and returns her sword to its place at her hip. "Thy support is much appreciated."

Despite Chiron's feelings about the drow, his training and belief that no suffering should go unredressed in the world made him try to delay Ardulace's leaving. "Wait."

Moving around the table to where the drow is finishing with her scabbard, Chiron continues, "The cloak is beyond my ability, but your burns I can heal easily." He holds up an open hand and waits to see if she'll accept his offer.

Subject: Talus - EDIT

The vile vermin poured into the room, raining from the ceiling and flooding through the walls and floor to swarm over the explorers. Web covered rats rushed into the room, quickly amassing into a formidable wave of rodents.

Talus lost track of Aelistae for a moment as a wave of squirming rodents broke over her and Linnix. Then, suddenly, the priestess was standing right beside him, drawing her sword and hacking wildly at the oncoming swarm. Dylan, likewise, was defending himself from the onslaught. With one quick spell and a deafening boom, like that of summer storm's thunderclap, he sent the life flying from dozens of the furry critters.

The warlock knew that he didn't have anything as effective as that concussive blast to send against the rodents, but Linnix was veritably buried and Talus refused to be helpless here. Taking aim at a part of the writhing mass a safe distance away from his friends, he let loose an arc of eldritch energy. He wanted these rats dead and gone before they could do any real damage to any of them. He had already kicked two of the disgusting creatures away when they tried to gnaw through his boots and he thought of what they might be doing to Linnix if one caught her hair as it fell and swung 'round to her face and a desperate rage swelled within him. Talus channeled his burning anger into the eldritch blast and when it struck the rats, there was a small puff of flame and the rats scampered away from the point of impact to avoid catching fire.

The ability to incinerate with his eldritch power was nice and all, but it didn't seem to do anything against these rats. There were just too many of them to target in a way that would cause any noticeable damage. So, he drew his dagger and prepared for a less elegant fight against the rodents.

The paladin stood there in shock for a few moments after the Governor's rebuke. Bailash either had great faith in this drow and was unwilling to share the basis for such trust or he was unspeakably foolish, and neither possibility sat well with Chiron.

Everyone else had retired to the dining room to finish their reports and enjoy a nice meal. Chiron followed, still dazed. Bailash had asked him here to protect the town from an external threat, and then all but tells him to ignore a potentially greater hazard from within.

Chiron absently takes a seat. The table is lavishly set, with various meats, cheeses and fruits, but he hardly notices. Placing an elbow on either side of his empty plate, and wrapping one hand around the other, Chiron drops his forehead down onto his clasped hands and tries to find a way to stay and help. The conversation around him faded in and out and Chiron caught only bits and pieces, lost in thought as he was.

"I can only hope I'm wrong... avatar of Tiamat, the Queen of Evil dragon-kind. If so we are in grave danger."

"Tomorrow one of my hopefuls... will be willing to join the group."

"As the book says, Are such adventurers present and ready to undertake this task?"

Chiron didn't know that answer to that question. He wasn't opposed to working with a dark elf as a matter of principle, but he'd seen in the past how much damage could be done by giving too much trust and forgiveness too quickly to one who wasn't penitent. This was Castor's town, though, and Chiron had no authority to countermand the Governor's wishes.

"I am an adventurer, and maybe now it is time..."

"If it pleases you Bailash I will take these tomes and study..."

He needed counsel, and no one here, himself included, was capable of offering an unbiased perspective on the situation. So he would find someone who was capable.

"Governor Bailash," Chiron began, standing from the table, "Is there, somewhere in your town, a church of Ilmater? Or, if not, then a temple to Tyr, or Torm? Failing those, a church of Lathander?"

Subject: take a few minutes for a survey?

If/when Lacey drinks the potion the questions he'll ask will be something like the following:

Starting with some setup questions to ensure the elixir has taken, so...

-Is your name Ardulace?
-Are you a drow, or dark elf?
-Are you capable of changing, or disguising, your appearance?
-What allows you to effect that change?

Then on to the stuff that has him worried.

-Does the (hat of disguise) change or disguise anything else about you other than appearance?
-To the best of your knowledge, are you the person Bailash sent for and intended to summon here?
-Do you intend to bring harm or suffering to any residents of Leaphaven or nearby towns?
-Do you consider yourself a cleric?
-Of what deity?
-Would you say you are in good standing with (Eilistraee)?
-Are you under the effects of any spell that would mask your nature from divination?
-Do you possess any enchanted items that would mask your nature from divination spells?
-To the best of your knowledge, are all of the answers you've just given truthful and honest?

For the stuff in parens he'll mirror whatever Lacey says in the answer for the previous question, e.g. Eilistraee or The Dark Maiden.

After this, I think he'll probably have to figure out how to say "I'm sorry".

"We can have this discussion over dinner if you will join us in the dining room." Bailash Castor extended the invitation to Xavier even as he turned his attention back to his newest, and very attractive, guest. "So, Satya, tell me about yourself. You have a look about you that is unfamiliar to me. You are definitely human but look tribal in appearance. How close am I to the mark?"

"Before we can sit down to dinner, Governor," said Chiron, though the host was engrossed with Satya's tale of her past and not paying attention, "There's a pink elephant that must be dealt with."

Turning to squarely face Lacey, Chiron holds out the flask he'd been cradling. "This elixir forces the individual who drinks it to speak nothing but the truth for about ten minutes. It also compels the subject to answer any questions put to her in that time. I've used it before, in criminal interrogations, as it provides more reliable results without actually causing any harm to the person being questioned." He paused a moment after finishing his explanation of the potion's effects.

"...But it all comes down to her being back here tomorrow." The governor finished giving Xavier the good news about his sister.

Then Chiron spoke again, "I need to ask that you drink it." The tension in the air could be cut with one of the butter knifes that were neatly placed and waiting in the nearby dining room.

Chiron does his best to keep his tone neutral as he speaks, to sound very matter-of-fact, and avoid any hint of accusation.

"You have, so far as I can detect, done nothing wrong, but your race brings up some very serious questions about what you are doing here and also taints any answers you freely give. I need those questions answered, and in a manner I can trust, before I can allow you to roam freely.

"I know that you and I have not operated very... smoothly... thus far, and I'd like this whole process to remain as free of high emotion as possible, so I'll let you dictate where we do this, and who all is present while you're under the effects of the tonic. Is that agreeable?"

"Sir, you need only go to the Apothecary in town. You should speak to the man privately and tell him you are in the employ of the governor and you wish to put an item on Governor Castor's bill. Present your name and he will record it and the bill will be..."

Chiron didn't hear the rest of Simon's answer. He gave a hurried bow and "thank you" and was out the door as quickly as he had arrived, leaping back into Prajna's saddle. Or, as much as leaping into a saddle on a seventeen hands high horse is possible; the maneuver is really a leaping and climbing combination when dealing with a horse that massive.

The apothecary was the next stop on the paladin's agenda. Again he dismounted just as Prajna came to a stop, using the momentum to run the last few strides up to the door.

"Sir," Chiron called out as he entered the shop and the apothecary, startled by the sudden burst of sound and movement entering his store, looked up from the customer he was helping. "I have a most urgent need of your..." His voice trailed away as he realized he was interrupting. "I'm sorry to intrude in your business here," Chiron apologized to the other customer, "But this is very important and shouldn't take but a minute. I will compensate you for your lost time."

He began untying his belt pouch as he turned back to the shop's proprietor, "I am in need of an elixir of truth. Have you heard of such a thing? It is needed to... pursue some clues about the mysterious house just outside of town."

Reaching into the pouch at his hip, Chiron grabbed a small handful of coins and placed them on the counter in front of the other customer. "There. I hope that is sufficient payment for you to indulge my barging in like this."

The clerk, seeing the coins dropped onto counter and the wide-eyed reaction the invoked in his previous customer, stepped out from behind the counter and unlocked an old, oak cabinet in the corner opposite the door, and was now searching through its contents. Chiron walked up behind the older man and half-whispered the rest of the details of this purchase. "I am in the employ of the town of Leaphaven and need to add this purchase to Governor Castor's bill. For your records, my name is Chiron Po."

After seeing the potential profits to be made from this rushed man, the apothecary's face fell when he heard the elixir was to be purchased on credit. Sure, with Governor Castor's name on the tab he knew he would get his money, but that also meant he couldn't inflate the price to take advantage of the man's hurried state.

Finally, he found what he was looking for: a small ceramic phial with engravings on one side that subtly hint of St. Cuthbert. "Ah, here it is." he said, as he pulled it from the shelf. "I shall add the purchase to the bill. Chiron Po was it?"

"Yes."

"Very well. Here you are." He turned back to close and lock the cabinet after handing the container over. "You do know its use, I assume?" He turned back just as the door to the shop swung shut. The rushed man was gone. Shaking his head at the constant urgency of youth, he walked back around the counter where his first customer has still staring, mouth agape, at the handful of coins in front of him. "Now, where were we?" asked the shop owner.

*****

Chiron kept a tight grip on the flask as he rode first out to the gate, then back to the Governor's mansion in search of the girls and Xavier. He had spent his entire allotment of funds for the month on this one item and he wasn't about to lose it to carelessness.

The paladin rode up to the Governor's front steps just as the trio of girls reached the front door. This time, he dismounted slowly, ensuring his newest possession couldn't be fumbled and dropped. "Ardulace! I have some questions that I need answered before we can proceed. And this," he said as he held up the small container, "will validate your answers."

You can always opt not to resist an effect. The save mechanic is for when you want to dive out of the way of the fireball, not die from poison, or avoid believing that the illithid is really your long lost cousin Bob and that you want to give him a hug. Most of the time you want to save, but you always have the option, no matter what's giving you the opportunity to save or what type of save is involved, to allow the effect and not even roll.

All the cure type spells are a good example. You could try to save vs. the cure light wounds spell being cast on you by your friend Generic Cleric (it allows will for half) if you really wanted to.

So....

my original plan for the post was going to incluse the purchase of the elixir and riding back to the gate, but I don't know how long that whole process will take and I didn't want to screw up the time-line and cause a "you can't talk to them because you're still on the other side of town while this is happening" paradox.

Chiron's got enough money on his person to buy the elixir himself if accessing the governor's account will take too long.

If the purchasing takes 10 minutes or less, he'll head back to the gate and try to catch everyone there. If it takes longer than that, he'll ride over to the governor's mansion and wait for people to report back to Bailash.

Chiron marched deliberately toward Leaphaven, keeping one eye on Ardulace the entire journey back. The boy seemed comfortable in the saddle and was able to guide Prajna expertly, despite the horse's size making him look like a child's doll. The paladin flinched when John launched himself out of the saddle, sure the boy would land wrong and survive the kidnapping only to break an ankle upon returning home, but he dropped the five feet and landed without injury, scrambling off to see his mother.

"My boy, oh my big boy is home. Oh thank the gods you are alright." The mother says through freely flowing tears. Then to the returning rescuers she exclaims, "Anything, anything I have is yours brave travelers for bringing my son home. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"No thanks are necessary, we were only doing our job. I'm glad we were able to reunite you with your son." Chiron pulled himself up into Prajna's saddle as he spoke to the overjoyed mother, then twisted around to address the others, "Do not let Ardulace out of your sight. Satya, your advice is sound. I need to go procure an item that will lay to rest any remaining questions about her intentions here. I'll find you all again shortly."

Chiron kicked Prajna into motion and the two bolted off into Leaphaven proper. Single-minded focus led the paladin straight to the governor's mansion where he vaulted from the saddle and to the front door. He rapped the large knocker twice, then opened the door and made his way inside.

Simon caught the rushed man in the entry-hall. "Is there something I can do for you, sir?"

"Yes, yes there is. I would like to access the petty cash account Governor Bailash granted us when entered his employ. I need to purchase an elixir of truth. Where in this town can I find such a draught? I am in no small hurry, please answer quickly."

Before we go any further though, we should pause the game and figure out how combat and contingency stuff is going to work because I received word from the DM that the spell had been cast (when Lacey said "Stay thy blade.") and I went from there.

Personally, I feel there should be almost be more activity in the Q&A thread than in the game thread. This is our place to clarify OoC stuff from the game and the more dialogue there is, the less likely we are to accidentally do something in the game world.

That's my two copper anyway.

Subject: Chiron and the Days of Our Lives

Chiron waited for the dark elf's rant to play itself out as they begin the march back to Leaphaven. He had wanted to question the drow right away back at the house, but Satya was wisely leading the child back to his mother and everyone followed the boy to ensure his safe return. But now as she went on extolling her own accomplishments and bravery, he was content to let her dig her own resting place as she continued to make his point for him. At last she finished, demanding to know what she had done wrong that the paladin found so offensive. She asked. He'll tell.

Before beginning his own tirade, Chiron moved close enough to Ardulace to ensure the child would not have to hear his words. Taking his cue from the drow, he started in a cool tone that broke, almost immediately, into melodrama. "What have you done? Why you've opened my eyes as I have opened yours. I see now. You are uniquely good amongst your notoriously evil race. You have cast off the treacherous and dark teachings of your jealous Spider Queen and fled to the surface, not to murder and desecrate as so, so many of your kind before you have done, but to spread peace and harmony where ever you may go. Thanks to you I know that no individual should ever be judged by their race. If ever I encounter a lich, or a red dragon, or some demon from the abyss, I shall first set aside my blade and discourse with them to learn if they, too, have a story to tell of how they've thrown off the taint of their beginnings.

"I understand, now, that your crusade for justice is why, when given the chance to aid the hopeless town of Leaphaven, you've banded together with other heroes and sent derisive insults their way from the moment we all met. I only wish that I had the kind of relationship with Ilmater that you have with your god, that I was capable of your level of blind, unquestioning, fool-hardy faith that would lead me to jump into an unknown danger and leave my appointed companions to who knows what fate or cause them to follow me into what may very well be the depths of hell. It is true that you pulled the child free from whatever danger he was in, and that is the one positive mark you have in your favor right now, but my training has taught me that you should not place your head inside the mouth of a lion until you know something about the fearsome beast."

The fake smile Chiron possessed until now fell away, and he continued deadpan, "And you... I know nothing about. Nothing that says you should not be put down right now. You are drow, and as indicated by your race, you have been sowing dissension and chaos for as long as I have known you. I know that your race is gifted with magical abilities, and I warn you that if you try to turn your arcane prowess against any of us, I will render you incapable of utilizing your considerable magical talents. You have saved the child and that has stayed my blade long enough to discover the truth of you. I hope that, in a rare moment of forethought, you make the trip back to town an uneventful one. And believe it or not, I do hope that at least some small part of your self-presentation is true, but do not test me until I have found how much of you is deceit and how much is truth. I will not hesitate. I will not mourn you."

His ire spent, Chiron slowed his steps, falling a few paces behind the dark elf-turned-half elf. "Hey Little John, how would you like to ride back to town?" he asked of the boy. He let out a shrill whistle and waited for Prajna to come trotting to his side, all the while his gaze bored holes into the back of Ardulace's head.

Seluumiel addressed the dark elf in an elvish dialect, "Vedui' Ardulace," she spoke in a cool tone enunciating the woman's name. "Eller naa nat'rim lye caela oquenia."

Chiron wished desperately he knew the elven language. The only thing he was able to pick out was Lacey's --Ardulace's-- name, and the tone Seluumiel used definitely wasn't friendly. whatever was said, Lacey seemed either not mind or was trying to ignore the pink elephant.

Ardulace returns the moon elf's cool words with a bow. "Mayhaps that is so, but to do it here and now would be foolhardy. Besides the danger of the dragon, before leaving the house I glimpsed a band of ogres readying for battle. If we do not wish to meet them, we should be well away from here when the house returns. I also suspect that this may be our only chance to leave the area without being turned unknowingly about, as Chiron was before we entered."

She seemed to enjoy throwing offhand insults and jabs just to see what kind of reaction it would provoke and the paladin had had enough of it. He approached Lacey and Sellumiel as the moon elf, also apparently fed up with the drow's antics, turned away to tend to the child. One hand was loosely closed around the grip of his sword, while his shield arm stayed at his side. He had conflicting emotions about how he wanted events to unravel. He wanted this arrest to go smoothly, so that they could return to town and quickly reunite the child with his hysterical mother. Part of him also wanted the drow to attack so that he wouldn't have to worry about her escape and any future evil machinations.

Ardulace turned to face Chiron as he walked closer. "Thou might wish to summon thy steed Chiron Po, that it may carry yon child to safety if we are... if need be."

"Woman, drop your disguise. It is useless now. We know your true identity and you can no longer fool us. Whatever scheme you had brewing is foiled, you can stop your tails of dragons and other creatures. The only monster here is you." Chiron had to fight to keep from screaming at the flippant woman. He took a steadying breath and began again, very deliberately. "I do intend to call Prajna to my side. But there are some other things that must be addressed first. I know that you have some magics about you that allow you to alter your appearance, and it would seem that you also have the ability to cloak your evil nature from detection. From what I know of your race, you probably have many, many more things hidden both from view and magical detection. Please, relieve yourself of your weapons and dismiss the illusion masking your true nature. Slowly." On the last word, Chiron partially draws his sword, showing only an inch of steel.

Chiron shoved the drow away when she kissed him. "Vile wench, get back! You'll not poison me!" He spat and climbed to his feet, wiping his mouth. The paladin was torn. He noticed the table in the doorway fading away, and the outside world with it, but there was a drow here, a member of a race that exemplified evil and delighted in bringing pain and death to others. He felt an urge to stay and fight until he could say that he made this corner of the world a safer place by removing a dark elf that masqueraded among the surface races and kidnapped their children. But he also knew that staying to end this one's machinations would most likely leave him trapped inside this house until the evil he had sensed earlier caught and killed him.

The outside world continued to fade away.

Reluctantly, he turned and sprinted the last ten or so feet to the door, and leaped over the wedged table to safety. "Tuck and roll." he reminded himself when his feet hit the patio outside. He'd cleared the table, but was quickly running out of space on the porch. He quick-stepped down the patio stairs, but couldn't keep his feet underneath him when he hit the grass. He dropped to his knees and would have rolled to a gentle stop were it not for the bulky shield strapped to his arm, a shield that insisted he stop halfway through the first roll.
