And remember you've got a paladin standing five feet away. I'd recommend not going all "I vant to suck your blood" and showing off your heritage before he knows you a bit better.

At least then there'd be a chance he won't just smite your face off.

"I am Chiron Po, knight of Ilmater, and my business here concerns this very house and the disappearance of a young child. If you know anything about the reason this house has manifested here or the whereabouts of the child, speak quickly. And while you're at it, please explain why you are in the spectral house that's causing so much trouble for the nearby town."

Chiron stands in the door frame as he speaks, keeping his shield at the ready but holding his sword low and trying to take as nonthreatening a stance as possible.

The woman caught him a bit off guard. The paladin was expecting undead, or some other horrible monster to spring out once the house was breached. Instead he gets a pretty woman hiding under a table, one that isn't even inherently evil. Leave it to a pretty woman to complicate things.

He's never really had to deal with traps of a magical nature before, so he's a bit naive when it comes to the potential pain one can find by simply opening a door.

"Twould'st be tragic indeed." Chiron, imitating Lacey's accent, replied as he rejoined the others at the front door. Seluumiel was explaining what her spells had detected.

"Neither thoughts nor minds have been revealed to me. Though neither hide within the fog nor house, other dangers may yet lurk there. We should move together and take great care with each step."

"And no evil lurks in the mist," added Chiron. "Neither is this house inherently evil, though there is some sentience to the powers manifesting here. We're still on the same side of this building; it ensures we can't circle it. At first I thought the fog was just playing with my sense of direction, but it's more than that."

"I looked away for only a moment as I walked off that way," Chiron said, waving his shield arm at the corner of the house he'd tried to look around, "and, in that moment, I found myself walking back from over here." The paladin finishes by pointing his sword in the opposite direction to emphasize his point.

"We should all stay close together while inside the house, at least until one of us figures out exactly what triggers the displacement effect."

With that, Chiron walks up to the front door. "You say there are no traps here?" he asks, more to reassure himself than anything else. He reaches out with his off-hand, pausing just before touching doorknob to throw a quick glance to the others to make sure they all are ready.

((Assuming a confirming nod or the like from the rest))

"Ilmater be with me." Chiron whispers to himself as he tries to fling the door open, bringing his shield up in front as soon as his hand leaves the door.

((If anyone has anything else they want to go over before the door is opened, it can happen in the space of my first OoC comment.))

Have we met this "Ol' Willy" before? I'm assuming yes because he's acting like he's familiar with us or connected to the outpost in some way.

Just wanted to confirm before posting.

Every evil character I've played before has been an up-close and personal kind of killer, so I think for this one I'll be figuring out some kind of caster.

I've done warlocks to death.
Not a fan of evil wizards.

Maybe sorcerer.

(Or a witchalock?)

Chiron arrives at a path leading away from the house, seemingly the same path they had followed to get here. But they hadn't walked a complete circuit yet, so this shouldn't be back to the starting point. Something was amiss here. The fog was getting the paladin all turned around and he didn't like the way the building seemed to be mocking them in their attempts to explore the clearing.

"There is something bewitching about this fog. I'm not sure we're actually on the other side of the house. I'm all for getting a closer look, but I think we should spread out and surround the structure. As long as each one of us has line of sight to two of the others, we might be able to foil whatever enchantment is keeping us from circling the house." Chiron offered. "If this same kind of confusion happened when the children were out here, I'm surprised that only one was lost."

"I do not relish the thought of stumbling unaware into an adversary. Give me a moment to see what I can divine." Seluumiel replied, and she began to incant the beginnings of a spell.

As she finished the intonation, Chiron moved a few paces away from the rest of the group. He was curious to see if the bewitching effects of the fog would still jumble his sense of direction if he kept the others in sight as a point of reference.

Try this one.

Prajna is a mare, which makes her a her.

"Steed" works, since it doesn't specify gender anymore. It arose from "stud" and its archaic definition implies a male horse, but now it is simply a horse, especially a spirited one.

I'm a little OCD about pronouns sometimes... and verb agreement... and....

OK. So I promise I won't post in grammar-nazi mode for at least another 2 pages.

EDIT:
The spot checks are alternating between the house and the surrounding forest. It takes a standard action to keep detect evil up and running, and a move action to actively use the spot check, which is why only every other round. The "filler" rounds are spent moving.

Subject: Chiron Po meets The Haunted House

Chiron sighs as everyone takes off to circle around the house. "This is going be... interesting. Circling the house is a bad idea, Chiron. You'll put it between yourself and what's known to be a safe escape route." he said to himself, since everyone else had already began their circuit of the clearing.

The behavior of the house had changed since it was last encountered and none of the others seemed to take note of the difference. Whatever was moving into this place was strengthening it's hold, able to maintain its material form longer and with more precise control than before. And it even seemed to react to the new presence here by summoning this unnatural fog to shroud the area.

The paladin knew they were at a serious disadvantage and he would need more than his own abilities to survive what was coming. This house would probably be expecting more unwelcome guests, having already been visited twice before, and if it had called ogres to the area to deal with the last group to venture out here, what else might be lurking in the fog? Thoughts of the ogres were sobering. The guards had come limping back, but had they dispatched all the ogres before returning to the city?

Ilmater had granted Chiron the ability to sense when evil lurked in a man's heart, no matter how careful a facade he presented to the world, and the paladin hoped that talent would come in handy picking things out of the fog that may intend to do them harm. Closing his eyes for the briefest moment, Chiron called out to The One Who Endures, asking for the power to seek out the evil that plagued the nearby town and that had rent a mother's heart by taking her child.

He felt better about the situation as he opened his eyes knowing that his god was with him. He checked the straps of his shield, ensuring it was securely attached to his arm, and set out after the others moving as quietly as he could. Chiron made sure he kept an eye both on the house, for any change of behavior, and on the surrounding woods, for any potential ambush. As he neared what was the "far side," as Lacey had called it, Chiron slowly drew his sword, feeling sure that if an attack was going to happen this would be the place for it.

((Detect Evil, continuing to concentrate as we move around the house.))
((Spot checks every other round))
((Moving Silently))

"The name's Talus." The warlock said, returning to his bowl. Last night's stew wasn't the best to begin with, and the overnight stay in the kettle and reheating it this morning definitely hadn't improved its flavor, but it was still better than the trail rations he normally subsisted on.

The warlock wiped his mouth with the back of his hand as he looks up from his bowl. "Yeah..." Pausing, he sized up the girl again.

Don't be mad at her. She couldn't have planned on edging you out of the group. It's Bart's prejudices that you need focus on, not this pretty little thing.

"Really, any scrolls you want to part with I could put to use. I've a way with magic that seems to disregard conventional limitations. Arcane, divine... doesn't matter.

"Hey, listen, you... you should..." Talus had no idea where he was going to say. You should go home? Leave me alone and stay out of my business?

Not her fault.

"You should join us for breakfast." He finished, motioning at the table.

Topic: Diabolic Genesis-Origins of Evil Q&A
Subject: A Less High Horse

I agree with you, Ava, that the governor's knowledge of your race is unlikely, however based on your backstory it is not entirely impossible that someone knows that you're a drow.

For the next few weeks they keep Ardulace captive, they clothe and feed her, and the old half-elf speaks to her every day, but she says nothing in response, merely waiting for her chance to escape. One morning, having remembered a trinket he had stolen years before, he retrieved it from his wagon, and approached the drowses. Extending his hand, he opened it to display a holy symbol of Eilistraee, a silver amulet of the moon with the enameled figure of a dark elf maiden silhouetted on it. Offering it to her, he turned to leave, but this small token was enough for her to break her silence. The two began to speak each evening, and eventually the half-elf took her under his protection despite the protest of his son and several of the other tinkers. The son had intended to turn her in for a large bounty.

There's a whole troupe of traveling merchants that know you exist, so saying that it's NEVER been revealed is inaccurate. They're even the ones that gave you the Hat of Disguise, so it's possible that knowledge has also been spread.

But that's it for the people you've specifically said know about your character's race.

There's also a chunk of people you've hinted at that know you are a dark elf.

Much of the time she has had to use the Hat of Disguise to conceal her race, and usually adopts the form of a half-elf named Lacey when she does so.
While adventuring she has accumulated some small wealth and a few magic items. Though she has found places where she was not killed on sight for being a Drow, she still seeks the place where she will be genuinely welcome, and is determined to find it, even if she has to found such a place herself.

You say that you usually adopts the guise of Lacey when you use the hat, which makes it less likely that the information about you started from the tinkers and spread from there, since they wouldn't know all your faces.

But you do admit that you don't always use the disguise. Even more telling than that is the line about not being killed on sight for being a drow. Someone, somewhere, saw you without the Hat and didn't kill you. Someone from this second group could be the source of the Gov'ner's improbable knowledge.

I have no idea how knowledge of your race made it to Bailash, and the path it took to get there must be very convoluted and rely mostly on happenstance, but based on the history you created I would say that it is most definitely possible (although improbable) that he does know about you.

And if he knows about your being a drow, he might also know about what Chiron did to get thrown out of the Companions, and as far as the paladin knows, only he, Ilmater, and a traumatized gutter-waif have that knowledge.

If you want to get an idea of what Prajna looks like, do some google image searches for Percheron (to get the size and build) and palomino (to get the coloring). That combination doesn't happen naturally, but since she's got a touch of celestial, I figured I could make an exception.

Subject: Chiron and Prajna

"I fully agree with you, Seluumiel, that there's some thing or some one behind the disturbance. Let's go find out what it is." Chiron says with a mischievous grin and follows Xavier out of the building. Once outside the paladin kneels, reciting something under his breath.

A horse's faint whinny can be heard, carried on the wind, but the thud of approaching hoof beats quickly drowns it out. The source of the sounds cannot be immediately identified, as there are no horses or ponies nearby, and then suddenly the charger was there at Chiron's side. It appeared so quickly that if you had looked away for a moment, or even blinked at just the right time, you'd swear that it had been the running stead you heard and that it must have skidded to a halt in just the second you laid eyes on it. And it was a beauty to behold. The horse stood at about seventeen hands high, definitely commanding attention with both it's size and grace of movement. Large, intelligent eyes stared out from a broad and straight face and her neck, arms and legs are obviously powerful and well muscled. Most of the horse is covered with chain mail, missing only the croupiere and flanchard, but anyone can plainly see its palomino coloring (golden coat and snow white tail and mane).

"Ahh... Prajna, I missed you too." Chiron laughed as the mare nuzzled her face against his shoulder and almost knocked the paladin from his feet. "We've got some work to do. This town is in danger and a child is missing and they've called us to find out what's going on." Before Chiron even finished his explanation, Prajna stopped her playing and stood at attention. Mention of the child in danger seemed to make the mare all business. "Good girl, I knew you'd want to help."

Chiron pulled himself up into the saddle and turned to the others. "Do you want to requisition horses from the city, or follow Xavier on foot? It may be somewhat less stealthy, but it will get us there faster and allow us to cover more ground if it turns out the child ran into the woods instead of being taken by the house. She won't like it, but I can leave Prajna a distance away if you all feel we should make the final approach on foot."

Kinda.

Chiron's initial plan was: Let's go there. See what we can see. Come back here.

He didn't explicitly say that searching for the kid was part of the plan and Lacey called him on it, maybe overreacting a bit in the process, maybe not.

Because of the friction that came from his too quickly described plan, Chiron revised the wording to: Let's go there. See what we can see, which includes looking for the kid and following any clues we might find. Come back here.

He just found a way of rewording that seems to, at least, satisfy everyone.

I'm ok with you narrating stuff like that. I'd said something in the q&a mostly how Chiron would have said it, so you made him say it.

And sometimes I'll say he does one thing, but the associated skill check that goes with that action fails, so you can definitely tweak the actions I put in my post to suit what the dice (or dice generator) say actually happen. And we'll post out of initiative order... misunderstand who's in the room... the list of things you might need to alter goes on and on.

In my mind, being OK with the DM changing some stuff is one of the things that goes with play-by-post gaming just like consuming upwards of 2 liters of Mtn Dew is a given for at-the-table games.

As long as you don't have me slaughter the villagers or some other way OoC move, I'm probably going to be fine with the change.
