It's me. Mostly.

Tiamat just took what I wrote in the q&a and added it to the game thread as part of the "Ok, you're moving now" update

He didn't say anything new, just reworded what I'd already said.

Half in, half out of character:

I don't know what the terrain around the city is like and just wanted to make sure we got to the haunted site without getting lost or missing it. Within one mile of farmland or very light woods would be no problem on our own... one mile of hills and thick forest is very easy to get of course.

If detailed directions are sure to get us there, no need for the escort. If something attacks, he'd only be a liability.

Tilting his head to the side, Chiron regards Xavier. "That's more or less what I had in mind. We know there's something out there and are at least somewhat more prepared than those who have gone before. While we're there, we might discover something that the guards were too busy to notice, or the children too frightened, or simply too young, to realize its importance. That is why suggested we return."

Here the paladin turns to face Lacey, "And only after we've performed a thorough search for the boy should we consider returning to town.

Now it seems that all our plans, no matter how they differ later on, all begin with our traveling out to see this haunted house, or whatever you'd like to name it. I say we head out and finalize the plans once we've seen what there is to see out there."

Chiron checks the buckles on his new armor one last time and heads to the armory's bookshelf-door. "Governor Castor, is there a guardsmen from the initial expedition in good enough shape to lead us to, or very near to, the site of this ghostly mansion?"

"I recommend that we see the sight of this disturbance as soon as possible," Chiron began, "to collect any clues that might still linger, and then return to here, to Leaphaven, to question those that have seen the house or it's horrors in person and glean what information we might before it fades from memory.

"The first visit to the house should be a brief reconnaissance expedition. I believe it would be folly to actively engage anything we encounter out there before we have learned more about what this thing is and what motives may be behind its appearance here."

Having said his piece, Chiron looks to the others to see if they have anything to add, or a different approach to suggest. "What say you?"

Subject: Rules Rules Rules

As is the case for most stuff that needs researching, the rules are split up between at least two books. In this case PHB and DMG. Take a look at the feat chapter in the PHB and the tail end of the Magic Item chapter of the DMG (not sure on that laast one).

Or, you could head on over to www.d20srd.org

That site has just about everything you'll ever need from the core books, plus stuff from a few other sources. Rules specifically about item creation can be found here:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#itemCreationFeats

That's the 'how'. The 'what' is the same things you find for sale in the Equipment and Magic Item chapters.

Potions can duplicate the effect of a spell of up to 3rd level that has a casting time of less than 1 minute.

Wands contain a single spell of 4th level or lower.

Scrolls can hold any level of spell and any number of spells (assuming you're willing to carry around a scroll 50' long)

Wondrous Items.... grab bag, really.

Subject: Same armor for the rogue and the paladin??

"Well? You guys ready?" Xavier asks as he finished pulling on his new chain shirt.

"Just about." Chiron replies over his shoulder. "Yes, I think I've found just the thing." The paladin had found a breastplate whose composite metal had been processed to look black. It blended into the shadows so well that it wasn't until his third sweep through the room that he actually spotted the thing. Laying on the table next to the main piece was a matching set of greaves and a helmet.

And it was light! It only weighed half of what a steel breastplate should. If it weren't for it's jet black appearance, Chiron would have sworn it was made of mithral.

"Governor Bailash, may I leave my chain shirt here as the beginnings of payment for a shield I'd like to commission? I'd like a shield made of the same material as this breastplate... I can't get over how light it is. I offer my former armor in trade, my shield, once I have the replacement, and I'll gladly pay any additional fee you require."

With that, Chiron turns to Lacey and Xavier. "Do we have..." and the paladin double takes as it seems, at first, that he and the attention-seeking acrobat have chosen identical pieces of armor. "Ahem, do we have all we need here?"

once a week is a fairly standard speed.

some games move slightly faster than that... others slower.

If the game gets to where it's expected that you post more than once a week to the game thread you'd better hope that nothing comes up in real life otherwise your character is going to get left behind while your dealing with a sick child, or pet, or whatever.

If if it helps, picture my character standing in front of a breastplate that is phasing in an out of existence. I'm been talking with tiamat through PM and am just waiting for confirmation before I post. I just don't want to post that I pick up an item, only to have that item not actually exist.

Assuming the game lasts long enough to make it to lvl 12 and assuming Talus doesn't acquire a boring hobby, like pushing up daisies, what feat should he take at 12: scribe scroll or craft wondrous item?

I was planning on getting scribe scroll, but since Bronwyn has that one already, I was thinking about taking something complimentary. Only thing that keeps scribe scroll on the table for me is that I'd be able to make any scroll I wanted to... so really I suppose it depends on how large Bronwyn's spell selection is by the time we level up that far.

Never had any characters with item creation feats before. I'd welcome any comments or suggestions... anecdotes.... whatever.

Subject: Chiron

Fine food. Aged wine. An excessive reward offered for a simple scouting mission.

One of the other guests, an elf, introduced herself as a priestess of Eilistraee. ((Knowledge: Religion))
The Dark Maiden is a goddess primarily for dark elves. Most elves wouldn't even allow a drow live, let alone worship with them. If she's a devoted cleric to Eilistraee, she must have an open mind and much broader level of tolerance compared to other surface elves. This should prove to be an interesting experience working with her.

The way Governor Castor presented the town's problems seems a bit suspicious, like he was leaving something out. This ghostly house appears, scares some children, and disappears with one of them. The town guards try to investigate and are attacked by ogres. And now the whole town is in a panic. If the house is as contained as he's alluded, why can't they just stay away from the site of the disturbance and search the surrounding areas in case the child, in his panic, ran further away from town? Lacey is right, Castor has his priorities backwards. We should be asking about the child, not the house.

"Mister Castor, is there something..." Chiron trailed off as as one of the other guests vaulted out of his chair and, like a true salesman, began questioning the governor about the book-keeping details of the proposed job. This showman, Xavier von Richter as he called himself, was very determined to pin down exact terms for his employ by the town of Leaphaven. If he continued with his form of hostile bargaining, there might be any form of payment headed his way.

"For the best," thought Chiron, "Anyone more interested in how much they're getting paid won't be of much use in finding this lost boy. The half-orc probably won't be of much direct help in finding the boy, but if I'm correct in my suspicions that the house is spilling some of its "terrors" out into the world, or drawing other evil to it, his obvious combat experience will prove a boon to our efforts."

Introductions continued, and most everyone was awaiting their chance at getting into the armory and getting outfitted for the search for the boy. Chiron was the only one left not to have officially accepted.

"Mister Castor," Chiron began, "Is there something you may have left out in your description of the situation? For instance the attack by the ogres. You don't believe it's unrelated to this spectral house and entirely coincidence, do you? That's why you called us all here so quickly. Whatever is inside that house that scared the children so badly when it first appeared is starting to get out."

The paladin paused a moment, to see how Bailash reacted to his guess. "I think you're right to be concerned about the danger spreading from the house, but I believe finding the child should take priority over the house."

Standing from the plush chair, Chiron finished, "You can add the name of Chiron Po to the list of your newly appointed city officials. I agree with Lacey that we should begin as soon as possible. Your messenger found me as I was eating breakfast, so I as well rested as possible and ready to go. Like Xavier said, how about we visit this armory of yours?"

((Sense Motive when suggesting something was left out. Does he react like he's been caught?))
((If the knowledge check fails, ignore the bit about the dark maiden))

Not really that shiny. It's kept in good repair, but he doesn't polish the armor. It's just gray steel.

And, wearing a chain shirt, he's actually less armored than some of the others in the group.

Lacey's armor is half-plate and Irgune's is dragonhide half-plate... Xavier's armor is the same style (chain shirt), but made of mithril so it's *much* shinier than mine.

Considering the robes that Seluumiel usually wears, if we're all wearing our armor and standing together, I'd draw the least attention compared to the rest of of the group.

Subject: Chiron Po (KIE-run POE)

...If you accept the mission of investigation and elimination of threats outside of our city gates, please teleport to Leaphaven with my courier and come meet with me. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Cordially yours,

Governor Bailash Castor

Chiron looks up from the letter to the courier standing across the table. He had just finished his morning meal at the Raven's Nest when the letter had been dropped nearly into his lap. "Are you Chiron?" the letter-bearer had asked. "Chiron Po, paladin in the company of the Companion..."

"Yes. Yes, my name is Chiron Po. For what purpose do you seek a paladin?"

The letter made its appearance.

Dear Sir,

We in Leaphaven are in dire need of help, for we are short handed in security staff in this town and a new development has arisen...

Something about this didn't make sense. Anyone who knew him by reputation should also know that he was all but thrown out of the Companions of the Noble Heart. "My reputation precedes me, huh?" he asked, almost to himself, then turned to the courier, "Tell me, what have you heard of my reputation?"

The man could only offer a confused look and the stammered beginnings of a response at the unexpected line of questioning. Realizing he'd just tried to stab the proverbial messenger, Chiron let the man off the hook, "Oh, never mind. I speak out of place and much too harshly to one who is only doing his job. I thank you for delivering this summons to me and accept the offer presented within.. unless you can give me a reason why I should be suspect of this invitation?" Chiron paused just long enough for that panicked and lost look to return to the messenger's face. "Kidding. I do accept. The letter was non-specific, but I assume from the wording that you have the means to ferry us quickly to your town of -- what was it? --Leaphaven? Just give me a few minutes to collect my things and we can be on our way."

-----

As he was fitting the last few items into his pack, it dawned on Chiron that maybe this governor fellow, whoever he was, had heard of him before he was sent out on this extended mission of goodwill. "This could be a chance to rebuild some of my standing with the Companions, especially if I get to work without the preconceived judgments of those who know why I've been sent this far away," he thought to himself. Then he remembered the messenger, and how rude he'd been to the man, so he dug a few silver coins out of his belt pouch as he headed back downstairs.

The courier was still waiting at the table, but the paladin had one last stop to make. "Hey, Keep. Something has come up that requires my immediate departure. Don't worry about refunding me for the room... take the remaining paid days and gift them to the next person who is in need of shelter but lacks the coins. I thank you and may Ilmater bless you for doing what is right in this." Now he was ready to leave.

"Alright. I have everything I need and have almost done everything I need to do. I should not have reacted so harshly to the words in the letter. You did not know what message you conveyed, were only doing as you'd been ordered, and in no way deserved the treatment you received."Chiron held out the coins as he finished, "Whatever compensation you've been given for this errand, I'm sure it didn't include the price for dealing with an ornery knight. Please, take this along with my apologies."

"Now let's see what we can do for your town!"

((OoC: -3sp to the courier; -2gp, 5sp to pay for 5 nights in a common inn))

The rules for a half-vampire reside in Libris Mortis: The Book of Undead.

You're lucky. The template doesn't change you're type, so you're not affected by my turn undead ability, and it doesn't impose any restrictions on your alignment, so you won't necessarily light up like a sunrod when I detect undead.

Nice choice.

When is the wagon from Castle Tethyr due to arrive and how close are the goblin infested mines to the north?

Bart said that he'd received word that a caravan "is being sent." We might have time to go clear the mines as a group before they arrive. And then we could split up. Aelistae and Linnix show the caravan safely through our area while the rest of us go see some kobolds.

If the timing works out.

that means we're all leaving the keep to escort the caravan out west.

Talus wouldn't really mind, as long as everyone thinks we'll have time to do all of the presented missions one at a time (escort, first contact, and assault).

It is kinda funny that your character finally meets back up with the group and the first thing we do is break off into smaller teams.

let's see... unless I'm mistaken, we have a fighter, a paladin, and a cleric so far.

We've doubled up on the melee roles, and the divine spell-casters. If we manage to continue this pattern, we'll end up with a rogue, a wizard, and a bard (or beguiler) to finish out the party and double up on arcane spells and skill classes. Heh heh, we'll have everything in spades.

Subject: that works too

At first I was thinking that instead of continuing with plans that were laid when we had all the players present, we should maybe change the plans to accommodate the smaller number of people (6 splitting into smaller groups could be okay, 3 or 4 splitting up can only end in tears).

However it looks like we still have nearly everyone, so mayhap changing the plans won't be necessary.

Updating at the speed of the smaller groups might work well though, once Life calms down enough for us to start back up again.

So mayhaps no sibby or jozan.

If they don't show back up, I'm thinking maybe the trip out to the kobolds should be put on hold. Replacing it with bronwyn and talus either doing some scouting of the mine, or joining the caravan escort out west, depending on what you all think.

Spells cost the amount of points equal to the spell level, with the exception for 0 lvl spells which cost .5 of a point. Which means if you cast a 0 lvl spell it costs .5 of a point, cast a 1st lvl spell and it costs 1 point, and to cast a 2nd lvl spell costs 2 points, and so on.

That was one of the two pieces that I was missing in my understanding of the spellcasting mechanic.

The other piece is regarding classes that normally would have to prepare a spell list every morning. Do we pick a number of spells equal to spells/day for each spell level each day and then we can cast from that smaller list as long as we have mp left? Or do we always have access to our entire list, like a sorcerer? Or some other option I haven't thought of yet?

Sorry for the mass of questions here. I am intrigued and want to understand.

Could you explain exactly how the magic pool system works for casting spells? I dug through Unearthed Arcana and found some stuff that's similar to what you've laid out, but it didn't match exactly, and like I said before I've never used a system like this before and I'm curious to find out how it works.

On a different note, I'm almost done typing up the back story for my character. In fact, I'm off to work on it some more right now. It should be finished and done with final edit & revision sometime tomorrow night.
