Such a nice change from what I'm used to dealing with IRL.

It's so nice to have threads that practically weave themselves together instead of having to tax Sovereign Glue to its limits.

Subject: Talus

“Aelistae, what are you doing?”

Talus gingerly climbed down from his perch in the branches, obviously favoring his right leg as he descended. His movement had lost its normally graceful sway and had taken on a halting, tentative quality.

“Yeah. You’re right, they definitely bit us. But mine wasn’t so big.” He reached the ground then, and his first step belied his claim. His right leg had given him trouble during the climb even though he had mostly used his arms for support, and now with that extra support gone, his leg decided it had had enough and it sent him spinning to the ground.

“Alright,” Talus said to the dirt before rolling over onto his back, “Maybe mine was a little big. But I still don’t believe that there was more than one of those… wretched things. It was making rallying cries, casting spells, using that magic staff. If there was another of those things, wouldn’t it have done the same?” Fighting the urge to just lie there and fall asleep, Talus propped himself into a sitting position. He had to find some way to some line of logic to convince Aelistae that taking her life so quickly wouldn’t help anything. But he didn’t know enough about these things to find a solid line of reasoning, maybe just overwhelming her with possibilities will be enough?

“Is contracting the disease assured? You seem to know more about this than any of us, does being bitten always mean a person will become a werewolf one hundred percent of the time? And do you know for certain that whatever magics Elesia used to save you didn’t also cure you? There are many more points I could bring up, and all of them make sacrifice seem a little premature at this point. Just wait for now, we have at least until the moon rises tomorrow night, correct? Maybe we can find some way to deal with this before then.” Talus pushed himself to his feet and hobbled (hopped mostly) toward the body of the dead lycanthrope.

“And maybe our “friend” here has something that might be of use to us.” Reaching down to grab the staff that the werewolf had been wielding, the warlock invoked his innate ability to detect magical auras. He then retrieved a small, carefully wrapped bundle from one of his pockets and produced from the folds of cloth his most valued possession: a monocle, rimmed with gold and attached to a golden ear clip by a fine gold chain.

Donning the item, Talus began to give the dead wolf-thing and his possessions a thorough going over, looking both for mundane items of potential value and anything that radiated magical power. First he spent a minute or so studying the staff he was using as a walking stick, then moved on to the items on the dead creature’s body.

((Time here for other’s actions. Taking 20 on the search and identifying anything magical unless my memory is faulty and were-creatures don’t revert to human form upon their death. In that case just identify the staff (if magical) and continue below))

His search completed, Talus logged the results of his magical probing away and turned to regard the now albino Xaris, curious to see if the little gnome radiated any magical aura after his change. “…Now what happened to you?”

I'm really hoping that it was just the one obvious werewolf, and that none of the others were carriers. There is no way I made my fort save if I had to fight that affliction off.

Kaelyn, What phase is the moon in right now? I think you probably said earlier, I just don't remember.

Xaris? Oh, he was quite exploded.

How many people can say they have a character that survived being exploded? I've had some that survived being in an explosion, but never any that were the explosion. Very cool.

White light.

Talus turned his head away from the intense glare. What on Toril just happened? Looking back after the light faded away, he was surprised to find that everyone was still standing. He was almost certain that the lycan had pulled some new trick and that he would find Xaris and Artanis dead.

Never so happy to be proven wrong, Talus was now more determined to get through the wolf below so that he could aid in the fight against the pack leader. Again, he loosed a stream of arcane energy down at the target below; the dark purple torrent crackles through the air toward the lupine form.

If you want to do another 2-round post Talus will blast at the wolf a second time, indeed, unless something really drastic happens he'll just keep wailing on it until it dies. If I've lost track of how much damage the thing has taken and it actually dies on this turn, his next actions will be climbing down and heading to whomever looks like they are in more trouble, Artanis or Bart.

He felt like a raccoon chased up a tree by a hunting dog. He couldn't climb down to help Aelistae with Bart and the dire wolf, nor could he effectively aid in the fight against the lycan with Xaris and Artanis so close to the werewolf.

The only way I can get to them, is get rid of this wolf first, then see where I can be of use. Frustrated with the situation he'd gotten himself into and his inability stand beside his friends, Talus began his invocations again, intent on swatting the wolf out of his way. This raccoon wasn't stuck just yet.

Subject: Talus

Panic gripped Talus as surely as the branches of the trees he was scaling. How much more magical prowess did the lycan posses? The thought that maybe this foe was beyond the group’s capabilities pushed its way to the forefront of his mind, then all the world seemed to slow. The wolves fell asleep, the werewolf became encased in stone, and Talus’ muscles became stubbornly tight, requiring monumental effort to move.

Why would he trap himself in stone when victory is so close at hand? ... I don’t think this spell is his doing.

There was a third player on the field now and Talus was berating himself for not recognizing earlier that those sparkles of light foreshadowed the arrival of a more powerful entity. … Wait…

The specks of light weren’t a hint about a third side, they were the third party. Each of motes of light transformed into the form of an elf, and each had a bow ready to be put to use. Elesia was talking to what appeared to be the leader of this elven band. Perhaps they could be reinforcements and would easily dispatch the wretched wolves. Talus realized that Elesia had been talking to the speck of light before it took on humanoid form. Does she know these elves already? Is why they have come to our aid?

Straining to hear what was being said between Elesia and the elves, Talus wished he had not climbed quite so high. Then the leader spoke, “It is time my foolhardy daughter left her notions of grandeur and adventure to the human tales read by the elders. I shall see them barred from access for they cause nothing but trouble, filling my daughter’s head with such rubbish. We are taking Elesianara back to the Great Oak, and I dare say you will not see each other again. Come my daughter, your little game has come to an end.”

The fey king dashed any hopes of an offer of help to pieces when Elesia tried to protest. Following a subtle command from their liege, the elves trained a dozen bows on the wayward child’s friends and now Talus was wishing that he had climbed just a few feet further. Panicking, he looked around (as much as possible with the constraining branches and vines) trying to find some way of getting out of the sights of those deadly bows. Then they were gone.

He missed what had transpired and tried to locate Elesia to find out how she had convinced them to leave. She wasn’t in the clearing either; they had taken her back with them. Over-protective parents rarely ever protect their children from anything. They just set them up for failure. Tell me, O wise king, what will happen to your daughter when…

A growling below ended his internal tirade. The wolves were back and looking just as vexed as before the fairy interruption. Quickly turning to face the trees, Talus clamored another dozen or so feet up the wall of vegetation. Thinking himself well out of reach of everything except perhaps the lycan’s spells, he swung back around to pick his targets. His first instinct was to finish off the wolf directly below, but a slight movement caught his eye. The stone was falling away from the leader. Taking the opportunity of an immobile target, Talus summoned forth an eldritch ray and hurled it at the leader, then dropped his gaze to the waiting wolf beneath him, already invoking the power for another blast.

I need to stop climbing and turn around to help them. That howl can't be a good thing.
Of course it's not a good thing. That's why you've got to get higher before you start attracting their attention again.
If I don't turn now there won't be anyone left to help. Then who's going to help me, eh?
...

Talus let go with one hand and swung around to survey the fight behind him. Things were not going well. Bart was back on the ground again and, though it looked like he was still conscious, there was an extremely large wolf hovering over him about to stop the poor man's habit of drawing breath. Aelistae was being mauled by the man-turned-wolf, there was no way she was going to survive. Another wolf just jumped out of the tent Sheva had been in with something hanging out of its mouth. Elesia just disappeared. The one bright point was that Linnix and Artanis had joined together and were double teaming their wolf.

Knowing that the wolf could probably jump the ten or so feet to catch his leg, Talus winced as we invoked another blast of eldritch energy and and directed it at Bart's assailant.

"Heya! Get away from him! I'd taste better anyway!" He yelled down, further trying to antagonize the beast(as if being zapped with pure arcane energy wasn't enough), then swung back to the wall and continued climbing.

Please let me get another ten feet before it tries jumping up here... Oh, Talus, what were you thinking?!

Subject: Talus

Talus’ breath came out in a disbelieving gasp when his invocation failed a second time. Without the threat of magical retaliation, there was nothing he could to stop the advance of the hungry wolf. He had a dagger sheathed in his boot, but going for it would present the back of his head and neck as a perfect target for the snarling maw before him.

The vicious animal apparently knew that the panicked look on Talus’ face meant that the prone man could no longer defend himself. If a wolf could smile, this one was grinning ear to ear. Lips pulled back to reveal razor sharp teeth and the wolf started forward to finish the kill. The prey held up an arm in a feeble attempt to keep powerful jaws from finding an easy hold but clawed paws easily swatted the obstacle to the side, creating a clear path to the neck—the sweet spot—where sweet blood would flow freely. Already having made an appetizer of the man’s leg, the wolf knew exactly how much it was going to savor this meal and it lunged forward, jaws opening wide.

The hungry creature jerked violently to the side, mid leap, missing its mark on the helpless man lying prone before it. It collapsed into a heap just beside its intended victim, staring into the terrified and confused eyes of its prey and unable to understand the sharp new pain just behind its shoulder blade. Still unsure of what had caused such an errant jump, the wolf kicked its paws at the ground, searching for some purchase, and snapped at Talus’ face. The pain it its shoulder increased tenfold, spreading into its ribcage and lungs. The wolf made one last lunge at the body lying next to it and, with a gasping yelp, fell limp, its tongue hanging grotesquely out of its mouth.

Talus pulled his eyes away from the rows of his would-be killer’s teeth when the wolf’s body shook again, thinking that the wolf might still kill him yet. Looking up, he immediately saw the reason the wolf had missed him. Artanis planted a foot on her kill and pulled at her sword one more time, yanking it free of its entanglement with the animal’s ribcage, before kneeling next to Talus to make sure she hadn’t arrived too late. "Are you alright? Can you stand?"

"I think so. Let’s find out." Talus offered her his unchewed arm and struggled to his feet. The more he moved around, the more he felt like the wounds weren’t actually that bad. It probably wouldn’t take too much more before he’d pass out from blood loss, but as long as he could avoid wrestling with another wolf he should live through the night.

Nearing the immaculately dressed bard Artanis asked, "Elesia, can you heal him? He's badly wounded!" before turning to Talus, "Please be careful. I'd like it if you stuck around a little bit longer." With that, she winked at him, patted his arm, and headed back into the fray.

"There’s no need for healing just yet… I’ll be fine as long as I don’t go toe to toe with any of them. Save your spells for those in close combat with the vile things. " Talus limped past Elesia, toward the magically created wall of shrubbery and invoked a mental image of adroitly climbing up the tangled mess. He could feel his inner power surge down through each of his appendages, causing his hands and feet to tingle. "I’d like to see you catch me up here." he mumbled to himself as he began to climb.

Does someone have to be wearing the shield for the crystals to light up? What if you kept the shield until most of the crystals were lit, then just drop the thing and move away and Linnix or I could shoot it while it's safely out of range of the group?

Sure, we might not kill all of them but we also won't kill all of us either.

EDIT: Lol... unless the hybrid decided to make use of the recently abandoned shield. That would be perfect.

Talus slammed into the ground after the wolf caught a hold of his calf and pulled his legs out from under him. Ok, so now you've got my attention. What are you going to do with it?

Rolling over on to his back, Talus pointed a finger at the wolf trying to remove the flesh from his leg. "I'm busy trying to kill your master, so please GET OFF!" He hoped that the jolt would distract the lupine, so he began climbing to his feet as soon as the blast went off and intended, if everything went well, to put a little space between himself and the vicious wolf as soon as possible.

I need to get away from these damned wolves. Dropping the leader will be much easier if I don't have some critter trying to play 'fetch' with my femur.

Maybe if i can get up the wall...

Anyone know if the withdraw action is possible while prone? I'm going to go a'hunting here in a minute for the rules, but figured I'd post the question in case there's anyone who's looked that up recently.

EDIT:
Ok, so a person can crawl 5ft as a move action and that movement provokes an AoO just like a normal move. I couldn't find anything in the PHB or the Rules Compendium that says you can't combine crawling and the withdraw action... but, I couldn't find anything that says you can combine the two either.

Kaelyn, the ball is in your court. 10' without an AoO or 5' with one? Your call.

The lycanthrope hissed as he turned his attention towards Talus. “You who cavort with demons, The Dark Mother can use those of your talents, cease your futile attempts to deny what you are, and join us, and you shall be rewarded a thousand times more than you could ever hope to achieve in this lifetime.”

Scenes of horror that he had witnessed in the cellar of his childhood home flashed across Talus’ mind and he growled, almost sounding like one of the wolf pack, as he forced his thoughts out of the past and back to the present. The growl became a yell ”I do not cavort with demons!” as Talus summoned forth another blast of eldritch energy to send to the smug werewolf —he was careful, this time, to keep his eyes open and avoid leaving an opening for the wolf.

Artanis came to Talus’ defense then, both against the wolf threatening physical harm and against the leader and his more insidious ploy, "His talents are not available to you, or this "Dark Mother" of yours. He has teamed up with us, and just so happens we are on the good side of this fight. So you can't have him!"

Encouraged by the speed at which Artanis came to his aid, Talus threw a quip of his own at the lycan as he raised his finger to release the arcane energies, ”I’ve spent most of my life denying what I am... I’m not sure I’d know how to stop now.”

((Eldritch blast at the pack leader w/ concentration check(DC16), if necessary, to avoid provoking an AoO from the wolf))
