The trash-heap holes, do they go all the way through the piles like a tunnel, or are they only part way through like a cave?

How far away from the debris mounds is the rock outcropping we're currently behind?

What's the distance and relationship between the piles of detritus and the marble ruins? i.e. ruins directly behind the 'ant hills' from where we are and only 30' between them, or more like 100' and the ruins are off to the left, or whatever.

I'm trying to figure out angles of approach for us and possible hiding places for them.

There's a bunch of complicated physics explaining the phenomenon, but it basically boils down to the inability of light to decide whether it's a particle or a wave. It goes back and forth between the two, willy-nilly. This behavior is called 'being on the fence' which is why the full saying is: The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

If light would just make up it's mind, we'd clearly see that the grass on the other side of the fence is, in fact, brown.

It was Grugg. Not our Grugg, it was the Canadian Humalot Grugg who, in search of food, left his ruins and wandered into the Inn. After spending only a short time lurking in the Comings and Goings forum looking for tasty newcomers, the Humalot Grugg discovered that the Inn was also home to an Eol. The Humalot Grugg fed our Grugg the hallucinogens to create a better target for the Eol and allow his own escape.

(As a side-note: apparently the Humalot Grugg is better at avoiding Eols than our Grugg.)

Well after closing time? Really? What time is it? I must have lost a few hours in there or something, because I was imagining it being just before ten o'clock when the fire started... so it'd still be before midnight when it's down to embers.

Was it later than that when Jethro went all pyromancer, or did I just spend more time kicking through the ashes than I realized?

Subject: Talus

Talus tried to keep his mind as blank as possible while he followed Xaris and Artanis back to the Green Gryphon. He knew if he let himself start thinking about what he'd put in motion he would talk himself out of the whole thing and end up wandering the wastes again.

Over time, Talus had convinced himself that simply staying away from large settlements was his best chance at surviving his family's legacy. He reasoned that if he never interacted with society, he would never be tempted to exploit the hierarchies that naturally develop. "Avoid failure and you have succeeded" he told himself. However, growing up and seeing the lavish parties his parents threw, being set into social circles for so long made his self-imposed exile nearly impossible. Eventually he would break down, find a small village somewhere and revel in just watching people talking, listening to laughter. Then, inevitably, he'd catch himself profiling everyone, just as his mother had taught him, and he'd force himself back into exile until he couldn't remember the mental notes he'd taken of the town's sordid affairs.

This was the first city he had entered in several months and Talus was nervous, not because he thought he might break again, but simply from the number of people present within these walls. The urgency surrounding the fire had kept him distracted, and he'd kept his eyes on Xaris' boots as they walked, purposefully focusing on nothing. Now, as he stepped into the tavern, Talus finally took in his surroundings. The number of people in the main hall shocked him as he stepped inside (even though by local standards the place was empty due to the excitement of the fire) and the sounds and smells, multiple conversations overlapping one another and the mixed sweet-sour of tobacco and exotic pipe weed, overwhelmed the man.

Talus made his way over to the barkeep in a daze, feeling both cramped and light-headed. "Uh, excuse me. How much... um, how much for a room?" He didn't quite catch the response, as everything little action took his full concentration and he was trying to fish some coins out of his belt pouch. Having grown accustomed to pine and cedar being the dominant scents, Talus was having trouble breathing the air think with pipe weed. At last the pouch surrendered its contents and Talus dropped three gold coins on the counter, "I hope this will do for now. Could you have someone bring up a wash basin and maybe something thing to eat? ...Thank you."

After locating Artanis across the room and trying to gesture that he was going upstairs, Talus made his way to his room and disappeared for the night.

((ooc: unless Xaris or Artanis catch him on the stairs, which wouldn't be hard to do with as slow as he's moving right now, Talus is going to wash up and crash for the night. ))

Having no way to start helping immediately, Talus waited until he could reach a decently sized piece of wood at the edge of the fire. After thoroughly dousing the wood, he began using it as a poker to make sure that the few parts of the structure that still stood weren't going to collapse on any of the volunteer workers. He didn't feel like he was doing much, in fact he spent more time waiting for the flames to be quelled than actually testing the walls, but he was contributing to the effort. He was helping. And as the flames diminished, so too did his doubts about humanity.

As the work neared its end, Talus spotted Artanis among the ash covered workers and approached the woman. "You seem to be well on the road to recovery. That gnome friend of yours...Zoris?... either has quite the knack for the healing arts or has several more of those potions stashed away somewhere."

Talus wipes some of the soot from his face and smiles warmly. "I'm sorry for earlier. I did not mean to be rude and ignore you, I was... lost in thought. My name is Talus Er..." The first syllable of his family name caught in his throat and his smile faded for a second. What if word of my family's depravities has spread this far? Unlikely, but no reason to risk associating myself with a rumor.

His smile returned just as quickly as it had gone and, clearing his throat, he continued, "...just Talus. I admire your bravery in running into a burning building to save the child of a perfect stranger. You don't see that kind of selflessness much anymore." Talus paused, as if unsure of himself, then slowly added, "Forgive me being so bold, but I wondered if I might impose and ask to travel with you and your companions for a time?

A look of sudden realization shot across his face and he quickly said, "Not that I'm, uh, trying to replace the friends that you just lost... it's that I just... Well and, and you... ...you know, nevermind. Bad timing, sorry. Forget that I asked."

...in this instance, esp. because we had planned out how the fight was going to start. Thanks to luck of the dice the start of the fight was also the end of the fight, so having the entire engagement in one post made the whole thing very concise.

Unless that same situation comes up again, where we plan out how we're going to start the fight and then nearly everything is dead after the surprise round, I'd like the chance to post after, say, at least every other round. Stuff comes up, plans change, things like that.

Anyway, well done everyone... first combat and no injuries. Ixion would never say it, but good plan Tellanth.

"Hurry, best get going." Torigad called to the group.

"Indeed." Ixion wiped his blade with the clothing of his most recent kill, cleaning the blood from it before returning the deadly instrument to its sheath. "The rest of them can't be too much further."

Ixion rolled the dead kobold over, quickly checking for anythin g of value as he continued, "If we're done here we should make haste. We'll only fetch the maximum reward if we return all of the bovine."

Once he completed his search of the kobold, the the thin man made his way back to the edge of the trail and disappears into the forest, calling out, "I suppose I'll get the left flank... I'll let you know if they've left you any more 'Welcome' presents." as he fades away.

Ixion is stalling until he sees some more of the group start to move into position, or discovers that what he overheard isn't what everyone's doing.

So far as I can tell, Snowlilly and Tellanth and T'puuli are all still near the pit and Manuhol is still making his way out and around in a wide circuit back to jump the kobolds. Is this right, or did I miss something in there?

I have the availability to check the Inn multiple times a day, but I know that not everyone has that luxury... so I want to make sure that I don't start the fight before everyone else has a chance to get in some last minute prep stuff. Like I said, Ixion is in a holding pattern right now and he's probably got enough ranks in Bluff to stand there talking to Torigad for a week without making the kobolds suspicious. He's not going to move on until he knows(via your post in the game thread) or I know (via your posts here) that everyone has done and said everything they want to before this fight starts.

This is probably one of the few times where we get to decide when to fight (instead of stuff just getting dropped on us), so I'm fine taking some time to get this up to speed.

I don't know if anyone else has the spell compendium or not, but the spell Revivify is amazing. It's a bit too late for Kas and Loriel, but if we got a few scrolls of that spell it'd help out with any future deaths.

It's cheap resurrection with no XP or Con loss... the trick is that it's only good the round immediately following corpsification. If the person with the scroll is more than a single move action away when you kick the bucket, you're outta luck.

...and her voice cracked, "they were still in there..."

Talus' eyes drifted back to the fire before him, a pained look crossed his face as he lamented the loss of people brave enough to risk their own lives to save a stranger's baby from danger. A danger intentionally brought by another.

Another fool mad with power. Does he use his control of fire to aid the blacksmith? Does he summon water elementals to water the crops? Probably beneath him. The self-absorbed...

Maribelle squeezed Talus' finger again, partially bringing him out of his mind and back to the street. He could feel a familiar heat building within him, one not connected to the blaze still burning so near the group.

"Here, perhaps you should be the one to return the child to her mother." He said, looking back to the woman lying on the ground. "That potion seems to have you on the mend already." He helped her into a sitting position and returned the babe to her arms.

The flames dancing before them quickly caught Talus' eyes again. Why must there be destruction everywhere? And it's not even the evil races doing most of it... it's us. We do it to ourselves, to each other. Humans should be counted next to orcs and goblins as creatures to be feared and turned away from civilization. I should never have ...

The cloaked man's shoulders slumped as he stood there, watching the flames, just as most others in the group were doing. Merely watching the show, hoping for a spectacle. He cast a defeated look at the trio beside him, the gnome, the woman, and the baby, then turned back towards the city gate.

A few members of the Fire Brigade caught his attention as he turned to leave. There was an elf that had just finished scrambling away from the building and was currently checking to make sure he wasn't on fire. He went into the building to help those inside. He could have stayed out here and still done his job... There was a human and, although there was a look of hopelessness on his face, he was still waving his wand about, creating water and trying his best to get the inferno contained.

They're trying. Most everyone else is just gawking... but those two, and the woman... and the gnome, are at least trying to make a difference.
Talus, you will not give in again. You will work through this, you will find a place where more people are like these four. You will work...

Talus hurried up to the man with the wand, "Do you have any more wands like that? I have some skill with them, and the more water the sooner we can get this put out. Maybe even find the bodies before they're completely incinerated."

I use the occasional prop when I DM. Usually just notes or little odds and ends... sometimes a key. I just love the look on the players' faces when instead of "You find such and such. It's a " you can just say, "You find this..." and hand it to them. No more glossy eyed stares.

I've found that if you're running the kind of game where the players have to solve the puzzles (opposed to characters simply making a knowledge check or something) the props really help.

Still rocking the baby in his arms, Talus craned his neck to check on the battered woman and her newly arrived gnomish nurse and to stare at the blaze behind him.

This one's lucky to be alive. Only the heroics of her mother saved her from that horrid fate... I hope saving her daughter didn't cost her her own life.

The sheer destruction playing out before him awed Talus. Then it occurred to him that all of the fire's fury had been focussed squarely on this one house. The nearby buildings weren't sporting anything more than mild smoke damage.

If the Fire Marshal was here soon enough to keep the flames from spreading, he should have been able to douse the fire entirely. If he arrived too late to save this house, the neighboring buildings should have suffered more damage. Someone wanted this house destroyed.

The baby cradled in Talus' arms either had a penchant for coincidence or was reading his thoughts, because just then she caught a hold of his index finger and squeezed with that vice-like grip that all infants possess. That action snapped Talus from his thoughts and he knelt down next to the gnome and his patient, inquiring, "Sir, how well do you know this woman? Does she have any enemies? Perhaps ones that would want to kill her and her baby? I believe that this fire was no accident and that someone intentionally started this inferno, intending it to become their funeral pyre."

...like I PMed Kaelyn, I crit failed my Craft: Character Sheet check.

I had it in my head that rolling the HP was something Kaelyn was going to do, so I didn't roll them up... which means that, because there wasn't a number when I type it up, I completely forgot to make a space for it.

To borrow a line from Aladin: "Why do I feel sheepish?"

And now onto other things. With what frequency is it permissible to post in the game thread? (Did I make that question complicated enough?) I am, usually, able to check the Inn more than twice a day for updates. Just because I'm here all the time shouldn't mean that I get to take every other post... "How much is too much?" I guess is what I'm after.

Subject: Ixion - Outside Sodgrove

Ixion stops about forty feet shy of the kobold ambushers and stretches, using the movement to surreptitiously draw his hand crossbow from its hidden sheath. Motioning for the dwarf to join him in a huddle, the thin man points at something off to the right side of the path (the side opposite the waiting kobolds).

((sleight of hand to draw the weapon))

"Get ready to use whatever ranged weapon you have at your disposal. T'puuli, and perhaps Manuhol, are circling around to surprise the stupid beasts, but their skills at stealth leave much to be desired. Unless something... like an angry dwarf... were to distract and occupy the kobolds, all T'puuli's plan will do is move the fight from the clear path to the cluttered woods."

During his explanation of the situation, Ixion retrieves a quarrel from his belt pouch and fits it into his crossbow, then lowers the weapon to his side to keep it concealed from the scaled onlookers.

"The timing here is going to be crucial; if we attack too soon, and there are more of them than the three or four I can make out from here, they will easily surround us before T'puuli arrives. If we wait too long, they'll kill T'puuli right away and we lose our backup."

Ixion looks back to the elf near the pit, both stalling for time for the others to get into position and to scan the woods for any sign of T'puuli's progress. Then, speaking under his breath so that the elven maiden wouldn't be likely to hear, he added, "And speaking of backup, did Snowlilly say what she was doing during this coming skirmish? As much as I'd hate to see a pretty thing like that marred by an errant javelin, we could use another body in the fray."

((spot/search for T'Puuli, Bluff so the kobolds don't catch on that I'm looking for something on their side of the path))
