How far down the path from the pit are the kobolds hiding?

Also, how sparse or think are the trees in this section of the wood? If I were to walk along the left side of the path, the side with the kobolds, would the trees block line of sight and let me slip away?(Make hide & move silent checks)

I must say I was a bit worried once I got into the bulk of the reading on this game. The average size of everyone's posts dwarfed what most of mine have been like in the other game I'm in.

This is only the second pbp game I've been involved in, and I'm glad that I started out well.

Tangent:
How do we go about nominating each other for the CD points? It might not be worth anything now, since Kas just died, but DragonMistress' last post actually evoked a verbal "wow" once I finished it.

"Well, standing around in the rain is great fun and all, but there are some stinking dragonkin that need eviscerating and a farmer that'll probably even pay us to do it. You can all stand here and watch each other die of pneumonia, but I'm going to gut some kobolds. Anyone want to come with me?"

Ixion waits for a moment to see if anyone moves to accept his offer, then moves out and around the pit and slowly begins down the path. He makes it very obvious that he's watching the trees on the side opposite of where the kobolds are hiding, not wanting to give away that he knows they're there. He pauses briefly, and looks back to the group to further sell the idea that he's oblivious to the would-be ambushers.
((Bluff check))

I don't know you exist yet, let along that you're in the middle of combat and could use some help.
Besides, I'm busy trying to get this baby to stop crying so I've got just about as much as I can handle already.

Okay, Talus Erato ('Tay-lus 'Air-uh-toe) finally exists in the world now... and he's somehow ended up with a baby, day-1 post-1. Maybe his Charisma is too high

Subject: Talus - Arriving on the scene

Talus Mukesh wearily approached the town. He'd been wandering for several days now, letting pure whim and fancy decide which path to take whenever he approached a crossroads. Now, it seemed, he was supposed to venture into civilization again. Pausing for a moment, he considered turning around and venturing back into the wilds.

Why did it have to be a castle? Lady Luck, you are fickle indeed.
Ok, just get in, spend the night and head out in the morning. You can't avoid people forever... and there have to be a few that aren't power-mad. Right?

With a heavy sigh he pushed his brown hair back out of his face, tucking it behind an ear, and reluctantly continued forward. Talus pulled the cowl of his green cloak low over his face, covering most of his features, but a few wisps of hair could be seen ending in curls just above his collar bone.

As the traveler approached the outer gates to the city, he took one last look behind him to sprawling farmsteads he had passed and the open country beyond them, tossed the branch he'd been using as a walking stick to the side of the road, and passed through the open portcullis and into the city.

Inside Talus found that the air had a tense, panicked, quality that he had not expected, given the grandiose nature of the exterior. There was something else hanging heavily in the air as well... Smoke! Following his nose and the cries of alarm, Talus finds the conflagration just as a person dives out of one of the windows on the upper floor, bounces along the collapsing roof, and disappears into the crowd. Sprinting to the back of the crowd, Talus begins shoving his way through, trying to find the man who had leaped from the roof.

Slipping through the last few of the onlookers Talus drops to his knees to check on the fallen man and discovered, much to his surprise, that it was a woman who had made the desperate leap. An explosion above his head stole his attention from the wounded woman. Looking up, he watched, awestruck, as all of the windows and a few sections of wall from the upper story blew out into the air above the street, flames close behind. Then the roof started to collapse.

Talus grabbed the woman lying on the ground by the collar of her shirt and began to drag her away from the inferno when he noticed that the injured woman was holding a baby under her shield, protecting it from the heat.

"Someone give me a hand here! It looks like she's got bones broken is several places, but I'm not sure. Be very careful when you move her." Talus instructed the few that stepped forward to lend a hand, then took the crying babe into his arms. He threw his cloak out so that it would be the soft blue of his billowy shirt cradling the infant instead of the more abrasive cloth of the over-cloak. Rocking the baby in his arms and cooing softly, Talus turns his back to the blaze to keep the little one safe from the heat.

"Is she going to be okay?" he asks over his shoulder to the group tending the battered woman. "Does anyone know if the child is hers?"

I tend to make characters that are really good at one or two things and leave everything else for the rest of the group to take care of. I've got a ftr17 that dual-wields longswords (oversized two-weapon fighting) and currently has a to-hit bonus of +32.

He can't do much if he can't get right next his target, but once he's within 5ft he'll ginsu just about everything. And since his weapons are adamantine, I do mean everything.

Hey all, thanks for welcoming me into your game. Managed to finally finish reading through the story and now I'm left wondering how Talus is going to fair.

Loriel and Kas are a tough act to follow.

...
EDIT: Actually, right now they are impossible to me to follow. I just tried posting and apparently I'm not on the VIP list yet and the bouncers wouldn't let me into the club.

Ixion paused for a moment considering the bald man before him and to assess his surroundings again. It was true, Ixion had focussed so narrowly or the movement behind the blackberry bush that he had lost sight of his place in the bigger picture of the kobold hunt.

If he is in league with the kobolds, he is either very stupid to give away information so freely or very smart to believe that handing me such information will make me assume he is not working with the dragonkin.

"If you are lying to me, you could be the world's best confidence man. And if I find out you are lying, you will also be the world's most short-lived con-artist." With that, Ixion reversed his grip on the blade and replaced the rapier in its sheath in one quick motion.

"Let us go meet with the others and see if they, too, notice the trap before they stumble into its maw." Ixion motions in the direction of the path where he left the other talking amongst themselves, then adds, seemingly as an afterthought, "My name is Ixion. You're a good distance from Norcross, what brings you here, green one?"

Ixion half-heartedly waves a salute to the sky as it opens its floodgates, making the last few steps to the obviously distracted man easier, but a lot less comfortable. Closing to within a few feet of his target, Ixion slowly pulls his rapier from it's sheath and taps the oblivious man on the shoulder with its deadly point.

"Are you following the kobolds, or pursuing their pursuers? Pray, move slowly, but answer quickly..." To accentuate the potentially lethal situation they were in, Ixion shifted his weight slightly, causing the rapier's point to slide up the bald man's shoulder and rest lightly against the base of his neck. "...and I recommend you choose your words carefully, sir."

((Ready action to punch with my weapon's hilt (-4 to attack to deal nonlethal damage) if he tries to run))

As Ixion neared the spot where he thought he'd seen movement, he caught sight of a bald man quietly picking his way through the underbrush. Ixion's eyes narrowed as he tried to ascertain the motives of this new player.

Is he an accomplice to the dragonkin thieves? Maybe he's the one the others are talking about, the mastermind.

Ixion began to reach for his crossbow, but paused halfway through the motion.

Oh Hells, he might be some other adventurer trying to take out the kobolds as well... too many possibilities to sort out later if I were to just kill him. Bah, I hate it when 'first strike' isn't the best strategy...

Leaving his crossbow hidden, Ixion began creeping toward his target, hoping he could get the drop on this newcomer and get this sorted quickly.

...it always leads to talking instead of action, and there are kobolds to exterminate.

I don't have the spot check yet, so I don't know if he actually saw anything... my last post was mostly just fluff with the purpose of pointing out that Ixion isn't trotting along beside the group, he's been shadowing the party's movements from the woods beside the path (almost in the same place as Hammer's Monk.)
Sorry if I wasn't very clear about this when we all took off after the Kobolds.

Shaithis, if my spot check turns out to be below Hammer's hide check, I can just say it was a rabbit or deer or something and go back.

Also, is the Q&A the best place to ask for skill checks that come up as a result of someone else's post?

Ixion watches the group huddle from the shadows, just off the path, and a devilish grin creeps onto his face. These people are starting to get interesting... they might actually be worth joining. Assuming they survive this little excursion.

Just before he stepped out of the shadows to end the red-faced one's embarrassment, Ixion thought he heard some brush move behind him. Turning slowly, he scanned the forest and caught what could have been moving from behind one tree and taking cover behind a blackberry bush.

Dropping into a low crouch the thin man began picking his way toward the berry bush where he thought he saw movement.

Gotcha now.

Topic: Indiana Jones
Subject: Indy ((mild spoiler alert))

I saw the midnight show last night. It started out very well and continued to be great right up until the end...

When it got to the climax of the story, both Lucas and Spielberg forgot what movie they were making. Good 'ol George Lucas forgot he was writing for Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and gave him the line, "I've got a bad feeling about this" causing audience to conjure up thoughts of Han Solo. Apparently, the dialog cross-over affected Steven Spielberg, as well, and he seemingly finished the film thinking he was directing Close Encounters.

He might have been trying for an epic finish similar to the one we see in Raiders, but in my opinion he missed the mark and everything that happens at the temple after the skull is replaced should be changed.

It was still an entertaining show, and worth seeing, but it didn't live up to the original trilogy (again, thoughts drift to Star Wars).

Shaithis, can you roll a spot check for me to see if Ixion sees the Monk shadowing the party? We're both moving alongside the path in about the same area, and I'm curious to see if our two characters get close enough discover one another.

Subject: Ixion - Sodrgrove: Down on the Farm

Ixion nervously alternates between watching the farmer, the drow, and the newcomer who was beginning to stalk off down the path after the cattle thieves. His conflicting thoughts play out in his body language as he shifts his weight back and forth from one leg to the other.

They're going to take all the fun... Argh, but you might get more "fun" than you want if you team up with one of her kind.

Oh, to hell with it.

Ixion's nervous swaying dies down once he's made up his mind. He watches the rest of the group gathered near the now-empty corral and waits with an almost unnerving calm for... something. His swaying has stopped and now it seems he is barely even breathing.

A close inspection would reveal that his trance is only surface deep: muscles in his legs are twitching, just waiting to be set into motion; his eyes are scanning the edge of the wood where the bovine tracks lead, seeming to look past the trees to his prey.

As the last of the group enters the wood, leaving only himself and Torigad with the farmer, a smile creeps onto the thin man's face and he suddenly sprints off into the forest. Jumping over some brush and entering the treeline just to the side of the path, he shouts, "And so the hunt begins!" over his shoulder and disappears into the shadows in pursuit of the dragonkin.

((Hide & Move Silent once he hits the tree line))

Subject: About a Dark Dwarf

I've been wondering about that as well... does the strong draconic heritage in the world tend to lead to more or less racial tensions?

A black skinned dwarf in a 'standard game' (if there is such a thing) would probably be labeled a duergar and get killed right along with the drow. Does the fact that a good number of people have black, even green, blue, copper, or red tainted skin lead to a bit more tolerance before the lynch mobs break out?

You know... "Mayhap he's not a dark elf, but a moon elf with some black blood in him. We must study his actions before we fly into a murderous rage..." type thing. Or does a very obvious chromatic bloodline tend to cause people to mistrust sooner than normal... "Watch that one when he gets near your things... he's got a white wyrm's blood in him."

I'm trying to get a feel for what the "average Joe" is like before I react in a way that doesn't fit this campaign setting.
