I just realized I've never read the very first paragraph of the shatter spell. I always skipped it and read the last three about how the specific usages worked(area, single object, or crystalline creature) and, for some reason, always thought it could affect magic items with its single object usage.

Finally read that first paragraph. It never works against magic objects.

It's a good thing I wanted to find out what the save DC was going to be, or Talus' first action in combat would have basically been to twiddle his thumbs. Very descriptive thumb twiddling, but ultimately useless.

He had the small group surrounded and sorely outnumbered. This was going to be an easy win and there would be a decent sized meal tonight thanks to the horses. He didn’t want to rush the kill, though, and so the cocky werewolf toyed with his prey. “You are fortunate however that we relish the hunt, and so lay your opportunity to perhaps keep your lives… for a little longer. Leave your four legged appetizers and scatter to the winds, for they will not satiate my kin long, and the hunt will then truly begin.” Accentuating his point, he tapped the staff on the earth before him and the tree’s in the clearing all seemed to stretch and intertwine, forming a wooden barrier of branches and brambles around the grove.

“You have sixty seconds to make your flight, or kiss your false god’s goodbye.” As he finished speaking, the wolves gathered all took a paced step forward in unison and growled once more.

“No,” Aelistae replied. “I have a counter-offer. We will hunt the hunter, and spirit his mange-eaten soul to his Dark Goddess. And we will do so for all those he has killed, and because the Moon belongs to us.”

Talus knew this group wouldn’t flee. Even before the drow priestess made her stand he could sense that the lycanthrope’s intimidation had failed and that this was going to escalate into full battle here on the ground preferred by the wolves. He began to backpedal, keeping his eyes on the hybrid leader for some clue about who his first target might be. Talus had fired the first shot, but both Xaris and Aelistae had weapons at the ready and he hoped that some of the better armed and armored members of their troupe would attract the most attention… at least until he got in a few good hits on the leader.

Talus closed his eyes just for the second it took to begin the manifestation of power within, and then locked his gaze on the pack leader. The building arcane energy rose up from his core and shot down his arm, causing a tingling sensation in his hand.

Any doubts about the use of his power were shoved away by the “chik-thoof” sound of a crossbow and Linnix’s voice coming from off to his side. Talus grinned as the power he’d summoned reached its zenith and wondered if this particular werewolf, even if he did win here tonight, would wish he had let this group camp peacefully. Still staring at the pack leader’s face he imagined the line from his hand to the wolf-thing's chest and pointed, all the while repeating Linnix’s battle cry in his head.

“Eat this.”

((Move back nearer to Elisa and cast another Eldritch blast))

I'm glad you liked it.

Was I able to successfully elicit a "Wait, what? Where did that come in?" type response at the beginning of the dream sequence?

I'm a fan of starting non-sequiturs and making them tie in somehow.

I know what that can be like. My favorite armor has become the mithril breastplate. It's considered light armor, so you can sleep in it and not be fatigued the next morning. My fighter only takes his off to bathe, and only then when he's behind a locked door or there's some other party members around to guard.
Having AC='No' can really suck.

Didn't need to know about the shatter spell for this post after all. I thought I was going to use that once or twice before combat started... oh well. Maybe next time.

I need to stop planning short posts. They end up being 2x bigger than what they look like in my head. Sorry for the pre-combat novel.

Subject: Talus

Everything hurt. Talus hadn’t quite gotten comfortable atop Moon Dancer before Bart gave the order to head out of town. He spent most of the day gripping too tightly with his legs and trying to hold his arms rigidly in place rather than allowing the constant up-and-down forward-backward motion to just happen. Eventually, when his muscles simply gave out and he was forced to relax, he discovered the rhythm to it and began to feel safe knowing that he wouldn’t fall off as soon as he let go.

Once the worry subsided, his mind began to wander. "I just wanted to let you know I think that was a very good thing you did back in town, giving that woman the money like you did. You're a good man, Talus."

No one had called him a “good man” before. Ever. After the revelation about his family’s legacy the best he had ever hoped for was keeping himself from being grouped with “evil” men. A good man? I don’t know if that was good. It felt cheap, like the way the temple goers would deem themselves pure by throwing the most money into the collection box. I didn’t want to stay and help her rebuild her house; I wanted to leave on this quest with Artanis and her friends. From the sermons I’ve heard putting yourself before others is not the mark of a good man. Can these two views be reconciled, the preacher’s “good men” and Artanis’ proclamation?

Talus was snapped out of the recesses of his mind when Bart called for the group to make camp for the night. He slid down from Moon Dancer’s saddle and was rudely reminded of how poorly he had treated his arms and legs this day when he nearly collapsed the moment he touched the ground. He managed only a few wobbly steps and a surprised “whoa” before dropping to his knees, deciding that a semi-controlled descent would be better than waiting for his muscles to deposit him face first into the dirt. He lay there for a minute letting his legs adjust to the idea of walking again and fiddled with the straps of his pack, the extra weight certainly didn’t help matters.

Moon Dancer edged closer to her fallen rider and nuzzled his prone form. Seeming to know that lying still would only give his legs a chance to seize up she kept prodding him until at last he sat up. ”All right, all right. I’ll get you unsaddled and let you eat. You’ve got to be tired too.”

Movement was half muscle and half sheer force of will, but Talus managed to get Moon Dancer unbridled and tethered to the tree nearest the clearing with a decent lead for grazing. He shambled over to the fire pit where Bart was beginning to prepare some food and rolled out his bedding. Too tired to bother with removing his armor or clothing he crawled inside the magically softened bedroll and promptly fell asleep.

Talus stood at the mouth of a cave hidden deep in a vast forest. A strong wind blew through the trees and across the opening in the rock, causing a great wailing sound. Occasionally a tree somewhere in the distance, pushed too strongly by the gale, would snap and fall. Oddly, the splintering wood sounded much like the crackle of a campfire. The wailing sound coming from the cave increased its volume then fell deathly silent.

“Stay close to the fire!”

Aelistae’s voice cut through the haze of Talus’ dream. He poked his head out from under his blanket, wiping sleep from his eyes and trying to figure out where he was, to see the priestess drawing her blade. “Stay close to the fire, and do not let the creatures bite you if you can help it!”

Suddenly he was wide awake and scrambling to his feet. His legs were still sore but the little bit of walking he had done before passing out had helped and adrenaline was doing the rest. It was dark, and most everyone was starting to form a ring around the fire crackling in the center of the clearing, but Aelistae was a few feet closer to the darkness, peering into the black as if to discover its secrets. Glancing to the others he realized that most of the group would have a hard time fighting whatever was out there until it came within the light of the fire. Talus knew he could see into the Black just as well, if not better, than the drow if he so desired, but he feared what calling upon that dark power might mean for himself. What might it mean if I don’t use my power and one of them falls tonight?

Holding onto that thought Talus shut his eyes and placed a hand over his closed lids. He envisioned a vortex of energy forming in his body’s core, then rising up inside his head and finally attaching itself to the back of his eyes. He dropped his hand to his side and looked out at the trees surrounding the camp. The Black faded before his new sight, turning into shades of gray and divulging its secrets. Moving to a point near the horses and almost opposite Aelistae, Talus continued to search for what the Black was trying to conceal from his companions.

((standard to climb out of the Magic Bedroll; standard to cast See the Unseen; I’ve got at least two rounds worth of actions here. This being the first combat for me in this game, I wasn’t sure how much I could get in for prep so I stuck with Ginafae’s example. If I’ve got time for a 3rd round before lupine hits the fan, I’ll ready an eldritch blast at anything non-humanoid coming at the camp.))

The shatter spell. Can it be used to shatter part of an object, say a section of a tree limb, or does it only function on the entire object, i.e. needing to target the limb and the entire rest of the tree?

Rules Lawyer to the rescue... sort of.

Eh, no. Being able to cast spells through the use bardic music is so that you can use both without the casting of the spell interrupting the use of your bardic music.... nothing ruins a good song more than having to drone on in Latin. Being able to cast the spell through song, or in your case a rallying lecture, doesn't change the way the spell being cast functions. If it targets one creature, it still only target one creature. At best you might get a DM specific ruling about increasing range from :Touch to :Close, but there's no way it's turning into a Mass Cure spell.

((Slight backpost))

Talus is overjoyed at the reality of being formally inducted into the noble, if somewhat eclectic, band. Thanking Bart, he makes his way out of the Green Gryphon with a slight detour to collect his pack and pay for breakfast, and finds himself heading for the site of last night’s fire. He is pleasantly surprised at what he finds on arriving at the ruined building. Wreathes of flowers have already been made and candles have been set up to honor the sacrifice that was made here.

It’s amazing how quickly these people will go out of their way to show support for others. Especially someone who is now very much worse off than most. Nothing can be gained, this is just unmitigated goodwill.

Just then someone emerges from the remains of the house dragging what looks to be an old trunk or hope chest. So much for goodwill. The looting begins. “Hey, get away from that, leave what’s not….” Talus took several jogging steps closer to the two women, meaning to chase the would-be thieves away, but then the one with her back to him turned and he recognized both her and his error. ”Oh… I didn’t… “Talus stammered, trying to find a way out of the awkwardness he’d charged into. ” I beg your pardon, ladies. I made an assumption and it was hugely inaccurate. I’m glad that Artanis was able to save your baby from the inferno, Osiris was watching over her last night.” He paused for a moment, unsure of what else to say until an idea crossed his mind. Talus pulled the pouch from his belt then began rummaging through his backpack, trying to find the sack that held most of his coin.

After a minute spent counting he presented the small pouch, now quite full, to the mother. ”I know this won’t even begin to replace all that was lost to you last night, but it should keep you and the little one fed and sheltered until some more permanent solution can be found.”
((The pouch contains 100gp and Talus will be as adamant that she accept as the mother had been about Artanis taking the armor while he was counting.))
((Talus will help Artanis carry her new armor, or assist her donning the new and aid carrying the old))

Arriving at the designated meeting place, Talus discovers another false assumption he had made. Everyone was planning to travel on horseback. Feeling quite sheepish, he approaches Bartholomew. "Um, I don’t have a horse. I’ve been on foot so long it didn’t even occur to me that you would want to move faster than that. Is there someplace nearby that I might purchase a horse?”

“Nonsense” replied the patron, “we’ve two fine mounts right here. They belonged to Kas and Loriel, and I did not have the heart to sell the wonderful animals. As long as you treat them with the same respect as their former riders, feel free to pick one as your own.”

For the second time this morning, Talus was amazed at the generosity of the people he had found. He admired both the majestic animals, finally settling on Moon Dancer. It might have just been that the darker color of her coat wasn’t as eye catching as Sunfire’s, but it seemed to Talus that the mare understood he wouldn’t want to be in the thick of things. A sideline observer rather than center-stage performer. He pulled himself into the saddle and began acquainting himself with the powerful equine in the time remaining before the group sets out.

I have no idea then.

And yeah, he was. While showing good ol'George what some of the fights would look like he got himself cast as the character instead of just the double.
Kinda like Ford... he was working as a carpenter on the set and was always around, so he'd help some of the other actors read for their auditions. Lucas cast him and we got an amazing Han Solo.

EDIT:
A-ha, I know what happened. I answered the wrong question. Ha-heh, heh... ahhhh.

So here's an easy one. What planet was the final battle in RotJ originally going to be centered around?

And I still don't know what species was slated to live on Endor before the Ewoks kicked them out.

I build my characters piece meal. Unless some part of their story dictates they look a certain way, appearance usually isn't set until someone asks what he looks like.
Until then my mental picture of him is something that kind of looks like me, but with minor and nondescript changes to better suit whatever his stat scores may be. Kinda like looking through glasses that are REALLY the wrong prescription; he's there but blurry. You just brought him a bit more into focus. Thanks.

I do live theater. I act, I tech, whatever. Part of that training makes me hesitant to sit down and figure out all of the character before I start playing with him. I put together just enough to start the first session and discover the rest as I go along. The constant "I didn't know that before" is what makes playing fun for me. Until the character dies, I never know everything about him.

This was supposed to be a short post. Oh well.

Ixion drops into a temporary defensive crouch, crossbow leveled at the entrances to the kobold lair, until he is sure that no other scaled reinforcements are on the way to help their doomed companions. Several seconds pass and there seems to be no forthcoming reprisal from the underground complex, so the thin man systematically removes the bolt from his weapon, releases the tension from the crossbar, then replaces both ammunition and weapon in their respective sheaths.
((Sleight of Hand to hide the crossbow))

Once own equipment is in order Ixion turns his attention to his cohorts, taking quick account of injuries suffered and comparing this to the first fight to assess combat prowess. "Not too shabby. I think Tellanth realized he was over his head here. T'puuli, Torigad, speak up if you feel you're too injured to continue."

Then his eyes fell upon the newcomer. The gnome had just picked himself up from the mud and was currently cleaning some of the muck from his face. He couldn't stand the shortfolk and had to suppress a sneer, "Let me guess, you're here for the cattle too? Well you're not diminishing my part of any reward payment just because you showed up at the end and fell in the mud." Ixion maintained eye contact a moment longer as he drew his rapier, then curtly turned away, heading for the nearest of the entrances to the kobold lair. "Speaking of ends, I'd wager that there are a few more kobolds still waiting to meet theirs."

As he neared the opening to the rubbish heap, Ixion threw a smile back to the elf, "You up for some more sport, Snowlilly?", then he began picking his way through the filth and into the underground passages.

((Move Silent after the comment to Snowlilly, Hide once inside the mound))

1. It officially combines Open Lock and Disable Device into one skill (something I've house-ruled for my 3.5 games)

2. It makes me appreciate 3.5 even more.

3. eh... Ok, maybe there's just the two things.

why yes, yes he does. Vaguely.

His hair is (now) closer to black than brown and Talus's skin (just became) a light olive-brown. And he's acquired a faint accent.

So Talus wasn't as ready as he had believed. He hasn't had a time constraint since leaving Mulhorand over two years ago and has grown partial to walking... he doesn't own a horse.

Can he find a suitable equine in the 30-45 minutes before everyone heads out? I've lost track, is there still a cart to ride in/on if he doesn't find a horse?
