Topic: Demon Wind Recruitment

I can try. My characters aren't usually that..... outgoing. The story really isn't in a handy place for the mv to go about changing party members though.

Topic: Does Size Matter?
Subject: Size always matters

The damage of the weapon should scale with the size of the weapon, not the size of the weapon's target. A club sized for a halfling should do less damage than one sized for a human and it should do the same amount of damage regardless of whether that halfling is using it to hit a gnome in the face, or a giant in the shin. A club sized for a giant is going to do more damage than one sized for a human, and more still than one sized for that gnome-hating halfling.

Once sizes get REALLY disparate, ie a club sized for a colossal creature used to hit something in the fine or diminutive size categories, you might throw out the 4d12 (or whatever) and just say the thing is obliterated.

Most creatures and objects start to pick up DR once they grow past the large or huge categories. That halfling sized club is still doing a d4 damage, but unless the wielder is a hulking brute, there's just do way it's going to get through the hide of, say, a gargantuan dragon to do any lasting damage.

while this is not my first time running a game, it is my first time doing so with a play-by-post format.

I'm sure there will be some hiccups while I get used to this medium, and I hope you all can bear with me.

Subject: The Black Hand - viewer discretion advised

The Narwhal glides effortlessly through the water toward the distant city. The wind is favorable and the crew is very skilled; it will only be another hour or so until you reach the port, so you head below deck and finish stowing your gear while the gulls continue to caw overhead. The last thing you pack away is the note that lead to be on this merchant ship in the first place:

--Notice--
The gentle peoples of Nihzyn in the country of Silvarum seek the aid of a few good men to break the reign of terror in our fair town. We have suffered a string of abductions, our children are not safe in their homes, and we implore all those adventurous enough to travel to our city to come and put an end to these kidnappings; give our young and their mothers hope!
Seek Gaillard for further information and details of compensation.

*****

The plea had been sent out by a town called Nihzyn and a copy of their summons had been posted in seemingly every tavern. After talking to a few bartenders and a traveling bard, you've learned that Nihzyn was decently sized farming town and modest trading hub for the distant country Silvarum. Despite being mentioned by name in the note not many people knew what or where Silvarum was, not until that bard filled you in:

"The nation had been in a state of unrest of the Chancellor had instituted martial law some years ago. Not much made it into that country anymore, and it's even rarer that something makes it out.

"If I wanted to smuggle something out of that place, and I'm not saying that I want to, I'd head to Clearwater and try my luck crossing the mountains. If you're lucky there'll be a crazy merchant trying a run. Dobb Hesslewhite's a guy that ussta make that trip.... or that's what I've heard anyway... not saying I know any of this first hand."

*****

So you booked passage on the Narwhal to Clearwater, the northern-most free port. Over the week you've been aboard you've discovered that you're not the only passenger aboard bound for Nihzyn. There are others here who heard the call for help, or the saw the prospect for reward, or for whatever reason are journeying to the beleaguered town.

As Clearwater comes into view, the buildings along the docks are a hodgepodge of architectural styles. You can see the different stages of construction in most of the buildings, some times the lower levels are brick and mortar and switch to wooden construction at the top levels. Some buildings managed to be erected using all the same kind of material, but the design style switches drastically from floor to floor.

As the Narwhal glides into dock you notice that the people of this city seem to match the buildings, humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings, and half-breeds of every color and creed and wearing clothes as unique and colorful as the rest of the city all going about their business. The ship comes to rest, the gangplank is run out, and the unloading process begins. The Captain Tradamont bids you all farewell and offers the use of his ship if you ever need passage in the future, and then he's lost in the commotion of a trade ship reaching its destination. You and the other passengers bound for Nihzyn are now on the docks of the major trade city of Clearwater.

Dobb Hesslewhite - Merchant who might know a way into Silvarum. He runs caravans out of Clearwater and is rumored to occasionally try crossing Silvarum's closed borders.

Captain Tradamont - Owns the merchant schooner The Narwhal. Has offered the use of his ship any time he's running near your location.

Subject: We shall call it.... This land

Clearwater is the de facto capitol of the trade nation on Silvarum's southern border.

This trade-nation is a collection of city-states that operate independent of one another until there is a greater common threat. Think Athens vs. Sparta until they both join up to go get Troy.

Nihzyn is a farming and trade city somewhere in Silvarum's southern region. They have sent out a summons for help.

More geographical added info as the party moves about.

Appearance
At an even six feet and a little over a hundred and fifty pounds, Geppetto sports a lean physique, though toned in the fashion of a circus acrobat. His pale complexion and slightly pointed ears are attributed to his elven heritage, as are his devilishly handsome features, but his reddish hair is from his mother, which he wears pulled back into a smooth ponytail. Again, from his human blood, he can grow a neat goatee, which he sometimes wears out of personal preference.

However, his visage is almost always hidden beneath his most unusual preference of garb; his harlequin's motley and mask.

Coloured in patterns of deep purple, forest green, and fiery orange, the garment seems to almost flow in waves while he moves, due to strange styling. It is covered in a checkerboard print of diamonds in alternating purple and orange. Horizontally, a green band passes through each row at the corner. It is loose in the arms and legs to allow him to move and tumble freely, and is cinched neatly around the waist by a wide black belt with silver buckle. The cuffs and collars are adorned with loose tassels in the green of his motley, while his boots and gloves are somewhat colour-coded; his right hand and left foot and garbed in orange, while his left hand and right foot wear purple. While it certainly catches the eye, as intended, the costume appears very dynamic during his performances, flowing smoothly about in an array of colours. The motley does have a form-fitting hood, which he typically wears up.

His cloak, too, is a curious item, and differs both in colour and style from his motley, being that is is a mesh of squares of whatever was at-hand to repair the garment. On the outside, it appears as though the original material has disappeared and been replaced entirely by a multitude of coloured patches, but underneath, the cloak is flat black, allowing it to be turned inside-out. The black interior, however, does have a few small pockets.

Hanging to his left hip by a shoulder strap is a royal blue satchel with red trimming, which he refers to as his “bag of toys.” Inside, the pouches and partitions are tailored to keep everything easy catalogued, primarily his juggling items, noisemakers, and so forth. His most precious belongings are kept in the satchel, and as such, his backpack is just a simple top-loader. Through some simple tinkering, Geppetto has adjusted the buckles so that a downwards pull on both straps will undo them altogether, allowing it to drop off of his back to the ground.

The most peculiar thing that Geppetto wears, however, is his harlequin mask. It reveals only his mouth and chin, and is half-purple, half-orange, in a sun and moon crescent styling. It has a several inch long nose, and the eyes are mere slits with opposite-coloured impressions to make them appear to be sockets; purple in the orange sun, and orange in the purple moon. It wraps all the way around his face, covering all but his exposed mouth. Atop his head is a small tricorne hat with a large white plume sticking out of it. When bedecked in his bizarre outfit, he looks not unlike a large marionette.

Special/Racial Abilities:
* +2 Constitution, -2 Charisma.
* Medium: As Medium creatures, dwarves have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
* Dwarf base land speed is 20 feet. However, dwarves can move at this speed even when wearing medium or heavy armor or when carrying a medium or heavy load (unlike other creatures, whose speed is reduced in such situations).
* Darkvision: Dwarves can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and dwarves can function just fine with no light at all.
* Stonecunning: This ability grants a dwarf a +2 racial bonus on Search checks to notice unusual stonework, such as sliding walls, stonework traps, new construction (even when built to match the old), unsafe stone surfaces, shaky stone ceilings, and the like. Something that isn’t stone but that is disguised as stone also counts as unusual stonework. A dwarf who merely comes within 10 feet of unusual stonework can make a Search check as if he were actively searching, and a dwarf can use the Search skill to find stonework traps as a rogue can. A dwarf can also intuit depth, sensing his approximate depth underground as naturally as a human can sense which way is up.
* Weapon Familiarity: Dwarves may treat dwarven waraxes and dwarven urgroshes as martial weapons, rather than exotic weapons.
* Stability: A dwarf gains a +4 bonus on ability checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground (but not when climbing, flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on the ground).
* +2 racial bonus on saving throws against poison.
* +2 racial bonus on saving throws against spells and spell-like effects.
* +1 racial bonus on attack rolls against orcs and goblinoids.
* +4 dodge bonus to Armor Class against monsters of the giant type. Any time a creature loses its Dexterity bonus (if any) to Armor Class, such as when it’s caught flat-footed, it loses its dodge bonus, too.
* +2 racial bonus on Appraise checks that are related to stone or metal items.
* +2 racial bonus on Craft checks that are related to stone or metal.
* Automatic Languages: Common and Dwarven. Bonus Languages: Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, and Undercommon.
* Favored Class: Fighter. A multiclass dwarf’s fighter class does not count when determining whether he takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing

Khetarin scanned the workshop evaluating the possible routes a thief could have taken to get the tools quickly. "And neither of you heard anything when the tools disappeared?" he asked, still looking at the room and invoking a small portion of his power to increase his visual acuity, allowing his eyes to pierce even a veil of invisibility. After his first, quick scan of the workspace he started a second, slower inspection looking for any trace of magical weavings.

"Sir," said Khetarin, turning back to the shop's owner, "Are your missing tools enchanted in any way? I ask because there is a faint trace of magic here. Either your tools are enchanted and their being here for such a long time has left an impression in your shop... or whoever stole your tools has powerful magics about them or they used a very potent spell to steal some incredibly common items."

I'm not sure, but I believe the hiatus status is just informational in nature and does not block the players from posting to the thread.
