Hang in there tiamat. I'm sure RL will smooth out for you eventually.

While the game is on hold, I wondered if you had any objections at all to our finishing up the night and maybe waking up tomorrow morning and starting to talk about what, if anything, we're going to do about the missing party members and where the group thinks it should go from here.

I don't know if you have any plans for us to encounter plot or if there's something else other than waking up and cooking breakfast that will befall us in the morning that might make continuing character interactions a bad idea.

As long as we recognize that the world outside our encampment is paused and we don't try to interact with it in anyway, can we talk and plan and whatnot so that once RL settles back down we can unpause the world and head out?

Khetarin followed the boy to his father's shop in silence, watching the towns-people's sideways glances. He never understood the small-town paranoia of outsiders. Perhaps it served them well.

He broke his own silence only once to ask, "Boy, you said your father's tools disappeared while he was using them. Do you know if they vanished out from in front of his eyes, or did he turn his back to do something else and they were gone when he returned?"

Chiron nodded in agreement with the knight's wisdom and resumed his watch in troubled silence. What kind of horrible secrets were those two hiding that they preferred walking alone into a hostile night over traveling with me? Whatever it was they must have believed it to be beyond all forgiveness and feared my reaction when I finally found them out.

Chiron believed he was very open-minded compared to most of the people that shared his tenets and training. He still carried the truth serum he'd purchased to test the intentions of a drow when he'd discovered her masquerading as a surface elf. He knew many a man who would have unleashed a holy wrath upon her the moment they saw the true color of her skin. But he had listened to her story, and believed enough to give her a chance to earn more trust. She refused and fled into the night. Chiron wondered if he'd been right in believing she might be trusted. And would her reaction to his trust color future interactions. Would he have listened to Camille if he found out she'd been a murdered? An image of that quiet little girl laughing as she plunged a dagger into some unknown victim flashed through Chiron's mind. It didn't fit, but there had to be some reason they'd left.

But he was out of time to throw new theories around. His watch was ending and he desperately wanted to let his mind switch off. He gently shook Seluumiel awake. "Your turn for watch." he said, once she was out of her reverie. "Some unfortunate events occurred earlier tonight. Xavier and Camille are convinced they would be better off alone, so they left this note and left us." Chiron held out the note for her to read and explained that he and Tenacity had decided a search in the morning might yield something, but it would be fruitless to go out tonight in the dark.

Subject: Post is up

Made some assumptions in the post and there's a bit of a time jump where some skill checks were made.

1st I assumed that there's nothing of note to be found inside the perimeter if Chiron takes 10 on a search check once he sees that they're missing.

2nd I assumed that it's the people that are missing, their bedrolls and other "camp stuff" are still present

3rd I assumed that there wasn't an encounter that would begin when Chiron reached the bell-strung perimeter during his search.

If any of these assumptions are incorrect, let me know and I can alter the post.

It's not implicitly said in the game post, but the amount of time that passes between noticing the kids are gone and waking Tenacity is however long it takes Chiron to search the camp area for them.

Chiron sat atop his bedroll leaning against a tree. He stared out at the grassy field he'd spent most of the previous day trekking through and replayed the events that brought him to this unfamiliar place. The two von Richter siblings chatted away somewhere behind him, whispering in the night.

The paladin was thinking about events that seemed like years ago, wondering if he'd acted rightly in handling a drow that wanted to play at being a surface-elf. An unusually warm gust of wind blew through the camp and pulled Chiron from his thoughts. Pushing himself to his feet he grabbed his sword and peered into the windward darkness. Maybe winds like that were normal for this place. Maybe not. Better to be cautious.

Nothing appeared to be moving out there; he couldn't hear anything either. That wasn't right, there should still be some noise. Where were Xavier and Camille?

***

"Tenacity, wake up." The paladin shook the knight's shoulder to rouse her from her trance. "Camille and Xavier are missing. I checked everywhere inside the tripwire you set up. They were here talking and then just gone. If it was only Xavier I wouldn't worry, but..." Chiron's voice trailed off and he scanned the poorly lit perimeter again. "In the time you spent with Camille, did she share her brother's penchant for wandering off?"

I almost forgot about xavier and camille when figuring the watches. "They're NPCs, they can't have a watch, right?" Found a slightly more in-game reason to exclude them. heh heh.

I think we should do some sleuthing of our own. Just walk around in the woods for a bit and see if anything turns up. Also it'll let the common-folk calm down a bit after our "Hey we're here and you're all guilty" arrival.

"...And that leaves me to take the second watch." Chiron said as Seluumiel finished. If Camille needed an escort to cross through the country to get to Leaphaven, he wasn't sure she could hold an effective watch, and the paladin didn't trust the girl's brother not to run off into the night because he saw something interesting or, worse yet, just because he was bored. "No, neither of those two would be responsible for a watch," he thought, but he was unsure how to let Seluumiel and Tenacity know his feelings without sending Xavier into a rant.

"Xavier, Camille, you can join any of the watches you'd like, though I would caution against both of you being up at the same time. It might encourage an attack during one of the later, 'undermanned' shifts." He hoped that would be sufficient for now. At the very least it would give him enough time to get the others' feelings about the two siblings.

A small grin spread across Khetarin's face as the sheriff and mayor described the thieves' actions. "It's no game," he said, "At least not to them. They're looking for something."

He paused momentarily to order his thoughts. "Perhaps it's something hidden inside an innocuous item, or perhaps they don't know exactly what is is they're trying to find, but from the pattern they've established: take an assortment of items, keep them for a short while, then discard them in the forest, I'd say they're looking for something specific and don't know where, precisely, to find it."

Khetarin looked from one face to the next, judging reactions to his theory. No one seemed to think it was preposterous, so he continued. "Since they're dropping items off once they've finished with them, I suggest we patrol the nearby forests. If items are recovered just about every time some ventures into the woods, perhaps we can find something before it's been returned to its owner and put back into regular use."

Hit points have never been a problem for me. At low levels no one ever has any, and death is close for most of the party all the time. Higher levels, yes more hit points but 2 claws, 1 bite, 1 wing, and 1 tail from a dragon makes those go away quick. Also, at higher levels the chance that a single blow will trigger a massive damage death goes up dramatically.

One of the quotes that floats around my gaming group is from the epic game we run, "I still made the fort save, but I rolled a 1. What's that mean?" "It means you're dead."

The things that bothers me is how unwieldy the grappling rules are. The system evolved from a simulator for war games, lots of guys fighting lots of other guys with weapons. The scope shrank and now it's individuals fighting, but still with weapons (or spells). Take away the weapon and it all goes to crap. The D&D system takes too long to get the upper hand (standard to grapple and another standard to pin) but Spycraft rules just hand you the patrolling guards on a silver platter if you've got enough athletics. I hope to one day find a happy medium.

"I can tend to Xavier, Camille and myself, Seluumiel. No need for one of us to completely exhaust our energy." The paladin examined the siblings as he spoke, bringing them both back to perfect health as he laid hands upon them. He then started a surge of healing within himself that could have healed much more than the minor wounds inflicted by those troublesome birds.

"We'll definitely need to set up some watches, and until we're more accustomed to the perils of this world I think it might be wise to have two of us awake at any given time, if we can figure out a rotation that won't keep us from fully recovering each night. What do the rest of you think? We'll be able to make a little better time tomorrow, Prajna will be able to join us again."

"Alright." Khetarin sighed, "Let's see these items you've recovered from the forest and we'll want a detailed description of where each item was found and of the immediate area around the recovered item at the time of recovery."

The ninja was all business now, having been told off by the sheriff he was determined to show that he was worth the fee charged by the Guild. "Who were the ones to make the recoveries? Was it always the same person?"

Subject: Khetarin

I'm discovering that Khetarin is kind of an asshole to non-guild members. I think he's become used to the high level of proficiency he encounters all the time back at the Citadel. Even the new recruits, while painfully under-trained compared to full fledged members are still, at least in Khetarin's estimation, miles ahead of the average lawman or criminal out in the world and light-years ahead of the average civilian.

Depending on how Sheriff & co. answer his questions, Khetarin will probably suggest that the group take some time to get a feel for the city and look for likely places to hop the walls. Shield, there are city walls, right? Also to look for any buildings near the walls that could have a basement and a tunnel under the walls. No reason yet this isn't partially an inside job. And I 2nd Drago's questions about "I was wondering if this town had sewer access, a river or creek that went through it, or if it had an aqua-duct that the thieves could possibly be using since no one has seen them come or go."

Khetarin won't believe they're using high powered magic like invisibility, until there's more proof that the thieves are good and it's not just a useless sheriff.

If there's time before nightfall and after giving the town the once-over, maybe we should scout the nearest portions of the woods. Shield, how big is the town? Thorpe, hamlet, metropolis?

"No witnesses of any kind?" Khetarin asked. "If.... What makes you think they're based out of the forest, then?" The man had more insulting words in mind, but knew he could get much more out of these men if he could avoid putting them on the defensive. Someone must have heard or seen something to make them believe the bandits were hiding in the forest. If they really had no leads at all, it was just as likely the thieves were hiding in the mayor's daughter's bedroom as any place outside of town.

For now at least, Khetarin thought, I'll keep those ideas to myself. "Have you heard humanoid voices coming from any particular part of the woods? Has game become more scarce, suggesting some group is poaching the wildlife? Do you have any abandoned buildings, either inside the town or old hunting cottages out in the woods? You understand you all live here all the time and might have become, through regular exposure, used to something that would be an obvious red flag to those of use who have just arrived." That was probably the best way Khatarin could phrase his questions without showing how inept he thought the locals to be. There was a nagging thought in the back of his mind, however, that perhaps the sheriff was not a fool and these thieves were indeed very good at what they did. He hoped that was not the case.

They're not doing that much damage with each individual attack, so I think Chiron's going to pull his bow off his back and help end the fight, then patch everyone up at the end. He'll send a pair of arrows after which ever one looks the most injured (in his opinion).

Khet is planning to find the sheriff as quickly as possible and check in. Formal introductions and all that.

Then he'll talk to any locals that have calmed down over their presence and get their opinion of the sheriff.

Find a place to stay if one isn't provided. Find any of the other group members that didn't go with him and compare notes.

That's the plan for the next couple hours assuming the bandits don't have horrible timing and think now is a good time to hit the town.

As soon as you begin to pile out of the wagon you can feel the tension in the air and the wary stares being cast in your direction, people here are clearly made nervous by your very presence.

They are paying us to be there and they're still going to wig out about our presence? They want to Orion Group to make the thieves go away, but they don't want anyone from the Group to enter their town? If they want to flip out, I might as well do something for them to wig out about.

And if she complains about it, he never actually threatened her or her family. He told her son to listen to her advice. "Officer, she was biased against me from the start and took my words out of context and ran them through her paranoid filter." It'll be a nice lesson for the good sheriff to learn to tell the yokels that he invited some mercenaries to town before we arrive next time.

Khetarin should have known better than to expect anything other than this group's almost signature impulsiveness after being stuck in that wagon for nearly a full day. He took a moment to stretch his legs, and allow Zau cast his mage armor spell, before heading into town.

Most of the locals were content to stare when they thought none of the newcomers were looking, but Khetarin found one little boy who didn't immediately look away. He couldn't have been more than ten years old and was helping his mother carry her grocery purchases as she went for shop to shop picking out food for her family; he was currently bear-hugging a sack of potatoes nearly as large as himself.

"Excuse me, young master, but would you know where I might find Sheriff Green?" Khetarin asked, smiling.

The mother glanced out the corner of her eye to see who was talking to her little boy and started when she saw who it was and the group he appeared to be with. She pulled the boy behind her, saying, "You leave my boy alone. And Jimmy, don't you answer him. You know better than to talk to strangers." She glared at the gray-clad man as if to say "this conversation is over."

Khetarin's smile disappeared at the woman's reaction and his face became cold. The woman lost all her nerve trying to stare him down and took a step back, almost tripping over young Jimmy. The ninja smiled at that and looked back down at the boy. "Now Jimmy," he said, "I need to know where the Sheriff is. Can you just point where I might be able to find him?"

Jimmy nodded pointed down the street for a moment before his mother pushed his arm down. "Thank you Jimmy. Good man, helping your mother with the shopping like that." He pointedly looked back at the mother for his departing words, "And you should listen to her about strangers. You never know when one of them might be an evil, dangerous person."

Grinning, Khetarin walked on to locate the sheriff without another thought about the paranoid mother. Shaking, the mother hurried to a smithy to purchase a dozen more locks for her home.

Subject: Xorathiel Quellivathan

He's a Totemist*/Scout Duskling* and is completely psychotic. The party was out exploring the deep woods when I joined the campaign, so the backstory I came up with for him made him a hermit living out in the wilds by himself. He had almost forgotten how to speak Common when the party found him. One of the others in the group spoke Sylvan and Xorathiel bonded with him right away. The group finds what they were after and heads back to town.

Xorathiel has no idea how he's supposed to act in society, so he takes all his cues from Gregor (the one who speaks Sylvan). Now, I think, would be good time to mention that the group he's fallen in with are a bunch of thieves and Gregor is about to switch from CN to CE and become an assassin. This is who his teachers were.

We've all moved on to a new, larger city now and Xorathiel has become the group's interrogation expert. He takes all the stuff he learned out in the wild hunting animals and applies it to human physiology. Things like which tendons to cut for maximum pain and minimum chance of killing the target.

As bad as I'm making him sound his alignment is really CHAOTIC-evil. If you're part of the 'bad guys' our group is currently killing off, but you don't draw your weapon, you've got a good chance that Xorathiel finds something else more entertaining than chasing down a coward. I think my DM's willingness to let me indulge in the randomness of this character and that the party hasn't killed him for only ever following half of the plan is what makes this guy so fun. Also, he's the first truly evil character I've had. Started at level 3 with him and now we're all around level 10.
