Subject: Khetarin

Khetarin climbed into the wagon behind the the two drow and took a seat in the back corner, curling his legs underneath himself, with his pack laying across his lap. He knew this was going to be a long ride and he didn't want to arrive tired (and miss some small detail for want of sleep) or restless (and charge head-long into danger for want of action), so he began to meditate. His mind could rest, focused only on the practice drills he had ingrained into his mind and body.

Khetarin didn't like to use weapons out on a mission, and felt that carrying one only increased the desire to choose a direct confrontation when other more subtle methods could work equally as well; however, he knew that very few of the people he would encounter as a part of his chosen occupation would share his views, so he trained with blades regularly. He did not have the space in the back of this wagon to run the actual routines, but he played through them in his mind and muscles tensed and relaxed the smallest amount at the thought of each attack and counter.

Once the physical routine was complete, he took himself through the mental exercises needed to focus the arcane talents inherent in his bloodline. He called forth the energies capable of forming the harmful blasts that all warlocks learn, stopping just short of actually releasing the destructive power. Instead, he altered the invocation and shaped the potential destruction into a beneficial effect, greatly enhancing the man's visual senses.

Training complete, Khetarin let himself drift to sleep. He spent the entire trip alternating between those small naps and the meditative training, never changing the Siddhasana pose he took on climbing into the wagon until everyone else had departed and it was his turn to step down onto the streets of Oakcrest.

~~~~~
His eyes adjusted slowly to the light of the rising sun, after spending such a long voyage closed in meditation. When the ninja could see again, Rath'shar was already gone from the group, and Kordar was walking away in what Khetarin thought was the wrong direction. But he had long ago stopped trying to make sense of the hobgoblin's methods and he usually came back with useful information or a well-timed flying kick, so he let the fighter leave. D'artanian was just finishing up his usual combat drills and Nefarion was praying to whatever dark god he prayed to for his daily portion of raw divine power. Priests and clerics were undeniably useful, but that kind of devotion and worship of a thing outside of one's self, Khetarin did not understand.
Then the ninja noticed Zauathin and the number of things he did not understand multiplied. The poor tiefling must be in withdrawal after that long ride with no spirits. He was frantically running about casting spells as if his deity was about to abandon him. Khatarin just shook his head.
"Are we all going to split up and do our own digging first, then talk to the sheriff later? Or hit up Green first? I believe it would be in the Group's best interest to let sheriff know his request has been answered and that we're here on the Orion Group's business before we go poking around and potentially stir up trouble. By the way, does anyone know where Rath is?" Khetarin spoke quickly, seeing D'artanian already headed into town and not wanting anyone else to leave before they could agree on at least the outline of a plan of action.
Roll of 9 for init. result of 11.
I'm a little confused about the creatures. Is the arrowhawk looking thing what zapped us or are those the circling birds and the zapper looks like something else?
Subject: Hmmm....
Cleric domain spells get unlimited casting (until abused)?
Okay. I have a question, then.
If domain spells, basically a 1/day use ability given to the clerics, "Here's an extra spell you can prep and one extra spell slot to prep it in," are getting bumped up to unlimited uses per day, does that mean that feats that do that exact same thing might also get a boost up to unlimited?
The specific feats I'm curious about are the Fiendish Presence and Fiendish Legacy feats from complete mage. As written now, Presence (prereq. of character level 6) gives the use of cause fear, detect thoughts, and suggestion, each usable once per day at a caster level equal to character level. Legacy is the same but prereq. is level 9 and spells are teleport (self plus 50 pounds of objects only), summon monster V(fiendish creatures only), and unholy blight.
I'm definitely going to take Presence, I'm not decided yet about Legacy. Just thought I'd ask since power boosts were going out, in case I could snag one.
Subject: Khetarin
Khetarin slung his backpack over his shoulder and headed straight out to the waiting wagon, falling into step behind the two drow brothers. He saw why Sighvat did what he did, making sure all the guild members very plainly saw the hierarchy and ranks and knew precisely where they fell in relation to the well-known handler. There was merit to the tactic, as it kept the new recruits in line. No one ever mouthed off to a senior member after Leo's berating, and Sighvat made sure no one went too long without his scrutiny. Khetarin took care to stay as uninteresting as possible during mission briefings, having endured too much special attention himself before realizing how to get along with Leo.
~~~~~

He woke early that morning and prepped for departure. After dressing and making the bed, he scanned the room to ensure everything was in its proper place. It always was, but this was his ritual before leaving on assignment. Inventory the room, disconnect from it, clear his mind. He kept his small room spartan and never acquired more furniture than the simple bed and chest that the guild had provided for him. He had pushed the bed all the way over into one corner and kept the chest against the wall at the foot of the bed, maximizing the amount of open space in the room. In the center of the floor was a circular rug, deep red with black and purple interweaving knot-work designs. Lined up against the wall opposite his bed were eight large candles of the same colors as the rug. When not on assignment, Khetarin spends most of his time here in meditation and the rest in one of the training rooms keeping his body at peak performance.

The room was ready. He was ready. With the backpack looped over one shoulder, Khetarin closed the door to his room and made his way to the courtyard. He was the first to arrive, he was always the first to arrive. He picked his spot, just off-center of where Sighvat would begin his breakdown of the group's flaws. He was not going to be the first target, and the others would fill in on either side so he would not be the last target. Khetarin carefully set down his pack and stood just in front of it, shoulders back, head up, hands pressed into the small of his back. There he closed his eyes and listened to the sounds of the guild around him, the low hum of a mercenary group rousing for a day of money making and training.

When the first of his group mates arrived, Khetarin opened his eyes, but stayed in that trance of just listening until Leo made his appearance. Everyone had mostly gotten used to Khetarin's silent vigil before mission assignments and knew to hold any talk until after being dismissed by Sighvat.

~~~~~
"Nefarion, Rath," Khetarin said as the three men left the courtyard, "What do you think about this mission? Are the thieves really that good, or is this Sheriff Green true to his name and too inept to actually catch a common thug?" Khetarin hoped that the latter was the case. An easy job would be a nice break after the last catastrophe the group had been assigned.
Subject: Huh.
So as I'm writing my intro post for Khetarin his personality is turning out to be a little different from the way that I had imagined as made up the character sheet. I was expecting his personal life to a lot more materialistic than it is. He's spent all his money on gear to be a better guild member and very little of it on things for himself. He's also got a lot more of a set routine and "you do things this way because this is the way things are done" kind of mind set. I thought he'd be just inside lawful from neutral, but, right now at least, he'd very firmly set in a lawful alignment. If he continues on this path I think I might end up multi-classing the ninja levels with monk. He'd be warlock/ninja and warlock/monk. Too bad the monk and ninja AC bonus don't stack.
Subject: Edit's
Wanted to point out some editing mistakes on my character sheet before someone else called me on them. I started from the first incarnation of this guy, when he was a Scout/Warlock, and the copy/paste of his appearance has some errors. Then I misunderstood the rules for stat generation which gave him some over-the-top skills and saves and I didn't get all of them back to normal human levels before sending what I thought was a finished sheet off.
Fortitude saves vs good effects should be at +2, not 5; and vs poison should be +5, not +4
Climb checks should be at +6, not 10
Spellcraft can just be ignored. I moved the ranks to other skills but I left the text of "Spellcraft = " for no reason I can divine.
And Khetarin isn't a scout this time around, so it shouldn't say leather armor in the physical description. His clothes are gray, yes, but he's not wearing a stitch of armor.
Poorly proofread, and I'm sorry. But I do get to submit this character as my worst job of editing ever! So that's..... good? Bleh.
Subject: That'll teach me to take days off.
Okay. so...
I have two different characters that rely very heavily on their speed and ability to move unhindered through a combat field. One uses the mobility feat and a feat from Compete Warrior called Elusive target. The other uses tumble and a ridiculously enhanced base-speed. Once battle proper has been joined neither of them really hide very much, but both of them have concealment-granting magical effects they can take advantage of. When I read:
Rath'Sharr works on the front lines, using every tactical advantage possible, even causing enemies to attack each other as he moves through his shroud of darkness. Nefarion covers him from a distance, using the powers at his disposal to aid him in the most effective way possible.
...but generally speaking they will not hesitate to knock someone down if they stand between them and their goal.
I imagined three enemies standing in a T formation near a cliff edge in some underground complex. Rath, after casting darkness on himself for the 20% miss-chance, runs between the first two so quickly that they hit each other when they swing at him. They are both hastily dispatched by Nefarion's spells. Rath, clear of the first two, bull rushes the other off the cliff and snatches whatever artifact he was about to pluck from its pedestal.
That scenario I put together in my head(definitely tainted by what I've done with my own characters) touches on every point that was stated about their tactics and the way they work and suggests to Khetarin a bit straight forward of an approach than he would take himself.
That's what all was going through my head when I said "blunt".
Also, yay for the title of Sneaky Bastard!
Subject: Chiron
The stinging of the plant burs had, at first, been an annoyance, but after another hour of that constant irritant, Chiron fond a way to view the situation through the filter of his religious tenets. Every bur he picked up by his passage is one fewer that a subsequent traveler would be plagued by. Even better, he might be able to reduce the suffering of his companions.
"We should walk single-file here. There is no point in all of us picking up these accursed stinging burs. I will lead, and any that I pick up will be one less for any of you to be troubled with." The paladin had made up his mind and was already moving to the front of the group. He could imagine protests forthcoming from Tenacity or Seluumiel, so he quelled their arguments before they could be made.
"The first and highest call of any Ilmatari is to lessen suffering in the world." Chiron explained. "The Order I had been a part of back home, The Companions of the Noble Heart, did this by finding the evil in the world that was spreading pain and suffering and putting an end to it. The Order of the Golden Cup, to whom I had applied before hearing the call from Leaphaven, is dedicated to healing and protecting the sick, innocent and weak. There is no evil here to smite, and I lack the fine magics needed to ease the irritation of plant's oils, so this is what I will do."
~~~

The day's trek was finally ended and the sun was setting. Chiron looked forward to a cool evening where he could dry off the constant sheen of sweat from the day. His hopes lessened greatly when he saw what appeared to be a second sun rising in the east. "I fear we may be farther from home than any of us may have guessed. Perhaps we should set up camp just inside the forest where the canopy can at least give us some shade."

The paladin was not at all looking forward to beginning travel again without having cool night's rest first, and if that was another sun, it wasn't going to cool anytime soon.

Subject: Khetarin

This quiet man stays well clear of the spell-effects and whirling blades that inevitably follow the pair of drow as they enter combat. He enjoys that the pair draw so much attention to themselves in their blunt approach to obstacles, as it gives him the chance to sneak around the fringes unnoticed by guards who are too busy dealing with a deadly drow duo.

Khetarin does not carry a blade on his person. The lack of an obvious weapon leads all but the most suspicious of people to underestimate just how lethal Khetarin can be. Too many times to count has a guard relaxed after a thorough weapons search only to be struck dead in that moment.

Anyone who has worked with the man knows that he has some arcane talents, and that he's obviously not a sorcerer or a wizard, but he never volunteers any information about exactly what his magical abilities are. There was one Orion Group initiate who insisted on questioning Khetarin until he gave a straight answer about his powers. The poor fool didn't understand the icy glare meant "go away". Multiple, conflicting rumors exist about the exact condition the body was found in, but they all say he died a painful, probably slow, death. The closest anyone gets to asking for details anymore is Sighvat inquiring if aspects of a mission are within Khetarin's capabilities (Apparently, Khetarin is upfront in answering binary questions like that and has been heard to say "no" when adding a more traditional mage for that assignment would be beneficial.)

I was playing Star Wars Combine, the eternally ranked #1 site on rpggateway and was getting tired of it. Figured I'd check out some of the other top sites listed there and the Inn, at the time, was like 5 or 6 or something like that. definitely had a promising description and it was rated just below those sites that never actually move from the top of the ranking, which in my mind put it in the top spot.

Hooked immediately.

Lurked for a bit, tried some posting games, and got into a 3.5 game on my first try. Sheer dumb luck conspired to keep me here and it's plan has worked well.

The room fell silent. Bohen, standing near the stone hand, dropped into a crouch and froze. Quickly, he looked to Gema and held a finger to his lips and gestured in the of the ankheg climbing along the wall. He wasn't sure if the thing would care about their presence here, but he definitely wasn't curious enough to want to find out.

He waved at Ilde and the others, motioning them forward, and repeated the finger-to-lips gesture before continuing after the bald Khord. The strange chanting of the captives in this room made the ranger curious about the mind-set and loyalties of the Khord who had pulled the woman free of the giant hand. Hopefully he wasn't about to find a second hostile force and get stuck fighting a two-front skirmish in these unfamiliar caverns.

Many times as Bohen made his way toward the newly discovered passageway he'd look back over his shoulder to make sure the others were following and that the ankheg wasn't taking an interest in their passage.

The new amulet hung loosely around the paladin's neck, just above the tied-hands symbol of Ilmater. With most of the weight of the chest now distributed amongst his traveling companions, Chiron hoisted the now nearly empty container onto his shoulder. The steel shield that had been slung over his back during the frantic run down the mountain was now strapped to his left arm and swinging slightly at his side as he walked along beside Diligence.

"I'm not familiar with navigating the wilds. I've spent most of my time in or very near cities. Sadly, if it comes to it, I must confess I'll be of no use if we have to forage for food or that sort of thing. Do any of you have any practice or training with that sort of thing?"

I'm a little confused about the current in-game time. Is it the next morning after we all met in the tavern (with the rogue's arrival being back-posted\ret-conned in) and we're leaving today, or is it the following evening after the group met, and we're leaving in the morning?

I'm lost, I think, because of the order the posts happened to occur, with Lokis falling asleep for some unknown period of time and then the rogue arrives at night. Maybe Lokis took a nap and it's still the first night.... i dunno.

"Perhaps now would be a good time to finish looking over the contents of this chest," Chiron suggested, "before we start the trek for the forest."

He opened the lid and pulled out each remaining item, setting them all, in turn, in an ordered row. "Okay, we've got here a dagger, a light crossbow, with exceptional craftsmanship, and a quarterstaff. There's a ring, a pair of gloves, and a set of bracers. There was an amulet here before all that running and jumping and mountain exploding..." Chiron ran his fingers through the grass for a moment, making sure he hadn't dropped it while retrieving one of the other items, before he remembered where it had gone. "Oh, that's right. Tenacity, you're already wearing the amulet, right? Good. Thought for a moment it'd been lost."

Returning to the chest, the paladin pulled out the last of its contents, six potion, and set them aside. "Other than believing the potions should be split up between you all, I have no preference about this gear. That amulet is really the only one of the lot that I think I might use, but I believe it would be of more use to you, Tenacity."

"Sonuva..." Bohen muttered under his breath knowing that he would regret, probably for the next few days, his actions over the next few seconds and he started moving in as straight a path as he could find toward the closing fist. He hurried through the hand gestures and foreign sounding syllables required to channel the modest amount of magical energy he could command. He willed himself to move faster and, aided by mystic power, did so.

Once the spell was complete, the ranger tried to pick his footfalls more carefully and avoid needlessly kicking dirt or grinding rocks together under his boots.

Hopefully the anhkegs would continue to pay him no mind, at least until he pulled the woman free of her fate. No telling what hell would break lose after that.

((Casting Longstrider and moving for the woman. 2nd round, attempt moving silently but still double moving. Not sure if that's a -5 or -20 penalty. ))

The red-headed thief raised an eyebrow as he considered Lokis' offer. "It was crazy." he thought, "This little gnome basically wanted them all to go up against an entire army. Not just any army either, one led by a friggin' dragon who, in turn, was taking orders from the world's most feared and sadistic necromancer.

"Putting it that way almost made it sound like some story the bards would recite. Just need a wizened old mentor and we're set." Just as that thought passed through his mind, Pyrrhus remembered the summoning ability of the combined group of stones. "One old mentor; check."

"Okay," the sorcerer said at length, "I'm in. Not necessarily for the whole thing, I am still not quite comfortable with purposefully provoking either a dragon or a certain evil wizard, but I go along with the first part of whatever your scheming and see how it turns out."
