Subject: Getting to know all about you....

Show: Gargoyles

Shoe: my leather boots

Book: Legacy of the Drow (Cheating a bit because I own the collectors edition and don't want to narrow down to one of the four individual books)

Goal: More D&D games; exposure to more DMing styles to improve my own.

Class: Warlock. I just love the way different invocation selection makes widely different characters, even though you only get 12 of them from 1->20.

Uh-oh. Rolled a 1. Something bad is about to happen.
Would you rather: Lose the character, keep the gear (to be used by the surviving party), or keep the character, lose the gear (and have to completely rebuild your inventory)?

Subject: Flanking: Got it Covered

I flank everything... some of the time.
--Distracting Attack(Ex)--
Whenever you hit an enemy with a weapon attack (whether melee or ranged), that enemy is considered flanked by you for the purpose of adjudicating your allies' attacks. For example, if your rogue ally attacked that enemy, not only would she gain a +2 bonus on her melee attack roll but she could also add her sneak attack damage to a successful melee attack.

This flanked condition lasts until either the enemy is attacked by one of your allies or until the start of your next turn, whichever comes first. This is an extraordinary ability.

This ability has no effect on creatures that can't be flanked.

It's not really as helpful as being there for you to sneak attack your full BAB, but I'm not really for standing toe-to-toe and provoking with every shot. 'Course with how enclosed this fight is, I think I'll be provoking a lot anyway so I'll try to rotate around these things and set that up for you.

The hinges for the door we used to get into this room... which side of the door are they on, our side or Leo's?

"I have no idea what's behind the door," Khetarin responded. Having finished his basic search of the wall near the door, the man returned his attention to the pedestals. "Nor do I know for certain what all is required to open the door. I assume there is some kind of switch either near the door, in or on one of these pedestals. If the swords are identical then it won't matter which one we take and which ones we leave. I believe it only matters where we leave them."

At the pedestals, Khetarin takes his time thoroughly inspecting each one. He also glances across the room at the door Leo had brought them through, trying to formulate a less subtle alternate escape route.

The paladin's head drooped when the door slammed shut behind them. He should have remembered Satya's plight last time they were here.

"Well. Four doors. I'm afraid I don't recall which of the doors the drow used to find her dragon, so I guess we just pick one? The evil emanating from this place came from all of the doors, equally. We could all open one of the doors at the same time, though I'm not sure that's the best idea. Any of you have a preference?"

"You need to replace two of the swords if you ever want this door to open." Khetarin slowly walks up to the hidden portal Ariel had discovered as he speaks, purposefully avoiding eye contact with the rest of the group.

"If we are in agreement that the swords are the same, the same runes, the same weight, the same balance, then let us assume, for purposes of this test, that they are in fact the same sword. Any one of them is the right choice."

At the wall he slides a hand along its surface, trying to feel the outline of the doorway. "So then if they are all the same sword, if any one of them will do, why bother with them at all? I think Villiedr is right. They have to be connected to the second task: Finding the way out. Try keeping the center pillar empty and return swords to the outer two pedestals."

"I think you assume too much." says the man watching the frantic sleuthing playing out near the pedestals. Walking to Ahn, he explains, "I am currently Varen's fortress, inside the testing room. He does not own me, nor does he own this knife," Khetarin draws a dagger from his hip and places it on the now vacant pedestal to illustrate his point, "even though it now resides in his testing chamber on one of these pedestals.

"Remember the wording of the Test. Return with the sword to the throne room. The instructions imply that only one of the swords belong to Varen, however they also fail to mention any penalty for returning to the throne room with his blade along with two others that are not his."

After sharing his take on the puzzle with the others, Khetarin returns his dagger to its sheath and then begins to examine the trio of swords. He wills his vision to become sensitive to the emanations given off by all types of magic. He looks first to the blades still in their stands, then to the one Anh holds, trying to determine if there are any magical differences between the weapons.

Being working on a post, but I've been a bit busy the last couple days. I designed lights for a dance show that's going up in.... 22 hours and that's sucked up a huge chunk of my time. Now that we're so close, there's not really a whole lot more I can do. Plus I've got all the the light cues programmed into the light board so I can free some space for character stuff.

Should be able to finish tonight. Also, no fair giving away that "I pick all three" wasn't the right answer. Stole some of my thunder.

Subject: Bohen

"Waitwaitwait." Bohen, head cocked far to one side, looked up from the tracks he'd been studying to regard Odin and Rerra with a look of confusion on his face. "You both attended an art exhibit fully prepared to chase an unknown number of insect-like creatures down a recently discovered tunnel in order to recover a priceless gem, its owner and several of his hired guards?"

Half a beat after he finished the question, Bohen broke into a huge grin, "HA! ...me too. Either of you ever mercenaries?" He pushed himself to his feet and cautiously entered the tunnel, returning to tracking so quickly that it made his last question seem rhetorical.

"I can't tell how many of them there are. Either a lot of them, or a few moving really fast.... or only a couple with LOTS of legs. I didn't see anything other than mandibles taking the guards away, so I don't think it's the last option.... unless some of them have lots of legs and lots of mouths...."

He continued droning on like this for a few minutes throwing out one possibility after another on who or what it was they were following and the odd craftsmanship of the tunnel. He stopped only when some of the museum guards tried to call them back out of the tunnel he turned and shouted back, "Well I'm not going back there! That's the one place I know about that has been attacked today and thereby proven unsafe. You stay if you'd like!"

***

"Hey old man," Bohen said later, when he heard a clicking sound bouncing down the tunnel, "You still have that rapier of yours ready? 'Cause I think we're about to get a very close look at something very ugly."

The clicking grew louder and faster until a group of four insect-things burst into the range of Bohen's darksight. He was glad he had the enhanced vision, otherwise he wouldn't be able to see a thing underground like this, but he was a sniper and had been a surface dweller for more than a decade and that had spoiled him with engagements that took place at over one- to two-hundred feet. He could reliably hit a target five hundred feet away. Sixty feet was too close, especially at the speed these things were moving.

"Aw crap." Bohen raised his bow and hoped that three bolts in the lead critter would stop it and give the others reason to pause. Maybe even pause long enough for another volly in their direction. Maybe. Probably not.

"Sonova...." He took aim and fired and whatever else he was saying was lost under the TH-TH-THWANG of his crossbow.

(OOC: full attack w/ Imp. Rapid shot. Three (+14, +14, +9) attacks at the closest one. 5'step back if it doesn't fall over or slow down.)

"Xavier! Quit screwing around in the tree and get down here! We're going into this house and I don't want the group to be split up again by its trickery."

Chiron barely glanced back over his shoulder as he admonished the very excitable and oft-noisy man, mistaking the ghost's scream for a cry of delight from Xavier, perhaps at finding a bird's nest up in the tree.

After calling out the warning, the paladin aided Tenacity in getting Diligence through the door and into the house. He was surprised at how relatively calm the animal was at being herded through such a relatively small opening and was glad they only had to do this once.

Prajna's very nature and connection to Chiron allowed her to return to the safety of her home plane to wait for her master's call. She watched as Chiron and Tenacity entered the house, followed closely by Seluumiel, before departing for home.

Not a big deal at all. And I do kind of like the idea of Bohen sounding fluent, having a pleasant voice, but the words that actually come out of his mouth just don't go over too well most of the time. He means well. There's just a reason he was assigned scout duty away- far away- from the main camp.

I get kind of paranoid any time one of my characters comes into conflict with another PC. I recently was involved in a game in which one of the other players couldn't separate player from character, and mistook in game stuff as an attack by the players against her personally. I've not yet had a chance to get to know all of you and just wanted to make sure everyone knew I don't have any issue with you at all. That was just Bohen being weird about Odin.

I also got fancy at the expense of accuracy with the whole "almost shoots at the attackers" thing. No worries. That sort of thing happens and to a traditional dwarf, Bohen might seem bare chinned.

Odin listened to the man’s smooth and effortless speech with some small jealousy. The man’s voice seemed to flow out over the group beautifully.

When I read this part of your post I knew I'd screwed up. Bohen's got a crap charisma score, so he can't go sounding all eloquent and stuff.

How do I fix this without editing a major chunk of my post?

Then it hit me. It's not how he speaks, but what speaks. I'm liking this little bit I've found out about him and I'm looking forward to some interesting NPC interactions in the future. I just hope he doesn't provoke Odin too much so he'll live long enough to talk to an NPC.

Subject: Bohen

“I am Odin Fokffblade,” said the large khord, then, turning to one of the soldiers, he added “Can you find a map? It might be helpful.” The Odin stayed to the side of the new opening forced onto the museum. He sheathed his rapier and pulled his crossbow out, loading a bolt into its mechanisms as he spoke, “I will join you Bohen. I need no equipment other than what I havff and I can aid you in battle and travffel.”

Bohen looked up from where he knelt in the rubble to regard the older khord. He wore a rapier on his hip and was working at reloading a crossbow of about the same strength as Bohen's own. He also sported numerous scars of previous battles and was obviously no stranger to combat, however, those scars didn't inspire much confidence in the ranger. Bohen had been somewhat spoiled by his time as a mercenary, as the Nemesis Company had several priests ranked among them who were highly skilled in the healing arts. Scars were, for the most part, cosmetic. Unless you were part of a horribly botched operation, you could choose which wounds you'd let scar and turn into honor badges and which you just wanted gone.

Odin's scars were more disfigurement than marks of honor; they impeded his speech, they destroyed his beard. If Bohen had to guess, he'd say this man hadn't won very many fights, he'd simply survived them. Not a good kind of fighter to bring with you. He tried to keep the disbelief out of his face as he watched Odin crank the bow back into a firing position, but his brows furrowed anyway.

"I don't know. These tunnels might get too close for that bow to be of much use. Do you know how to use that blade if it comes to close-quarters, old man?" Bohen had been thinking it, but he hadn't meant to call him old so bluntly. His commander was always telling him to work on that brain-mouth filter that he seemed to lack at most times.

"Just because you were the first to recover after the attack doesn't mean you have to go chasing down these tunnels... you could stay here and co-ordinate with the guards, make sure everyone is on the same page and that they don't shoot me in the back if they go barreling down the tunnels after me." Maybe that wouldn't make him feel so bad, if he had a job to do.

"I'm a finder of things; a property redistribution specialist." explains the tall man.

This is the first he'd spoken since arriving outside the gates of Palderton. Leo Sighvat's wagon train arrived and he'd silently pulled himself into the trailing wagon, pulled his cloak tight and sat wordlessly through the entire trip.

"My name is Khetarin. I also have some small magical affinity, not so much as a bookworm wizard, but it's there. Until I know just exactly what your invitation includes, what the Orion Group is, and why I should become one of you, that's all I think you need to know." With that, he returns to leaning up against one of the warrior-statues and brushes away a lock of his sandy blond hair that had fallen into his face.

It's Fern Gully meets Dances with Wolves.... in Space. Nothing new as far as story telling goes, but it's far from a bad story. However, OMG is it beautiful. Incredible creatures and landscape. I've seen it both in 3D and standard formats, and the 3D is the better of the two. But even if you don't want to spring the extra 2-5 dollars for 3D, it's still an amazing movie to look at.

Subject: Clarification

I knew that I didn't actually have an action to attack with during the smash and grab, so I used the fluff of 'crowd in the way' to cover the crunch of 'it's not my turn yet'. Drawing the weapon from the pack is as easy as walking forward and loading takes even less time. Why wouldn't he take a shot even if it'd be at the thing's back? I figured throwing the crowd in would cover, but if you think it makes the creature's attack seem slower than it actually was, I can change my post easily.

Also, before anyone gets too comfortable thinking of Bohen as having completely cut off his beard, I was to clarify his appearance. He does have a beard and until about ten years ago he looked like every other Khord you might find. Looking at him from now the neck up, he'd still look like any other Khord his age. The 'problem' with his beard is that it ends abruptly at the collar bone. At first he just cut a line straight across, but over the years he's taken to trimming the bottom edge so that it curves a little to match his jaw line.

I think it's kind of funny that Odin and Bohen's equipment is so similar.

+3 Elven chain vs. +3 mithral chain shirt
rapier vs. rapier
heavy crossbow vs. heavy repeating crossbow

The rapier is still hiding in the Haversack, and the chain shirt is mostly covered by a cloak, but I'm looking forward to seeing Odin's reaction if he ever gets to see Bohen fight close-quarters.

Topic: New Spores of Itanlok ~ 2 ~ A Short Adventure in Audalis
Subject: Bohen

The peaceful exhibit was forcefully thrown into chaos as the far wall exploded, launching debris at the museum patrons and filling the air with dust. Bohen threw his arms up on to protect his eyes from the dust and flying bits of rock. Something had gone horribly wrong. Ikamor vanished into the cloud. One of the spectators near the expanding cloud went next, then a guard twisted to the side and vaulted unnaturally out of sight. Someone, or some thing, was in that cloud and attacking any Khord standing close enough to reach.

Bohen reached back over his head and pulled the top item from his pack. The young Khord didn't understand the magic used in making his rucksack, or how the bag always seemed to know just what item he was after, but every time he reached inside the item he wanted was right there on top. This time the haversack produced his well-used repeating crossbow. Bohen pulled the reloading lever at the same time he brought the weapon to bear against the most recent target. One of the things stepped out of the dust cloud and grabbed the Irondock Sapphire. It was a brown insectoid creature and for the first time in a very long time, Bohen found himself looking at a creature he couldn't immediately identify. What was worse, there was nothing he could do to stop the creature from taking the gem.

The crowd had fallen completely into panic and was running, climbing, and crawling to the exit, and the erratic movement combined with the poor visibility made hitting the marauding creature impossible. Bohen watched as the gem disappeared into the cloud. Lowering his crossbow, the ranger fell against the nearby wall and began the slow push against the panicked crowd to begin his hunt.

***

A very large Khord shouted before Bohen had made very much forward progress. “You three!” He shouted at several others as well and beckoned them all over with a wave of the hand, “Here!” He paused for a moment, apparently to let them all get closer instead of continuing to shout, then spoke again, “We havff to act. Do we havff a map? Do we know what that… thing?”

"I don't believe any of that thing's tunnels will be on any local map. Unless it's taking measures to conceal its passage through the tunnels I can track it, though I'm not sure what "it" is just yet. I've arrived back home this very morning from... an extended time on the surface and I've got all my gear with me so I can head out right now. Irondock just offered me a job, and I fully intend to keep my employer alive. If any of you would like to join the hunt, but need to gather proper gear, I can mark tunnel any time it forks so you'll be able to follow."

Bohen made his way up to the pedestal while he spoke and inspected the rubble between it and the room's new doorway. Hopefully the dirt and dust had settled quickly enough for the insect-thing to have left a foot print. Did it even have feet? Through the dust and panicking museum goers he hadn't really seen any more than its face and huge mandibles. Maybe he spoke too soon in saying he could track the thieves.

"Oh. And my name's Bohen." he added, peering down the recently exposed tunnel.

(OOC: Survival check to find and follow tracks. Going to wait to actually enter the tunnel until the large Khord and the others he signaled have a chance to speak. He's chaotic, but not that ADD)
