But we won't be able to make a campfire if/when we camp out in the open, too visible from far too far away. Unless we camp during the day and travel at night. Also maybe a bad idea. ....

Maybe not. I think I might be the only one without enhanced vision modes.

Who is still around? It's been awhile since any new posts and I'm curious if this half of the Spores story still has a pulse.

Al breathed some life into it for a bit, but I don't think we should need him to be hounding us all the time just to post.

It's Wednesday night for me right now and if there's no new activity either here or in the game thread by Monday morning, Bohen's going to get impatient and wander into the cavern by his onesies.

I think there might have been some misunderstanding here, and I'd hate for the to be the reason we lose a player.

Crowe: Tus has asked that I bow out of this one.

Tus: Crowe has informed me that he has left the game so I have made an exit for his character.

Doesn't sound like both are on the same page. Just wanted to make sure before we lose a player for no good reason.

Subject: Pyrrhus

"So you expect us to go pick a fight with that Lich-Lover's pet dragon because you gave us some glowing rocks?" Pyrrhus asked incredulously. "And this is the same dragon that killed your master, a red wyrm? On what plane do you think we'd last longer than ten seconds if we fight? He was your master, you go smite the overgrown lizard." The sorcerer's volume had grown steadily and he had to stop and calm himself before he started screaming. Pyrrhus set the gray stone the gnome had given him on the table and stared into it.

"Look. I think it's very valiant of you, wanting to avenge your master's death, but unless you're offering more than this trinket as compensation and a plan better than "Go fight very bravely and die very quickly" I think I'm going to have to pass on joining your crusade."

Pyrrhus started absently spinning the stone on the table, playing with it's center of gravity and trying to get a stable, wobble-free rotation. Suddenly he had an idea. Even better, he had an angle. "What's become of your master's hoard, now that he's passed on to... where ever dragons pass on to? Are you, perhaps, a dragon yourself, Lokis, using a gnomish form to enter the town without hassle? Do you plan to keep the mountains of gold that I'm sure your former master possessed to yourself, or could it be used to finance this fool's errand and reward anyone lucky enough to survive it?

"I'm just thinking out loud here. Perhaps a pile of gold like that, if it existed, if it were available, would be enough to assuage any doubts about the mission you've set before us. Enough gold can fix any problem. Again, if it's available. If you're not too busy counting it for yourself while you send this poor barbarian and druid to their deaths. I'm sure the scribe over there could find some rather colorful words to describe their poorly funded end."

Pyrrhus wore a small, crooked grin by the time he finished 'thinking'. He was fairly sure he'd just talked himself into the biggest payday of his life. Assuming he was still in possession of his life after fighting a dragon rumored to be as nasty as Howsre. He tried not think about that part, picturing instead the mansion he could buy and parties he could host and the many many Delras he could pay to live there with him. His crooked grin wasn't so small anymore.

"I think enclosing us all in magical silence is a good idea." Bohen checked his weapons while he talked, ensuring that his rapier and the dagger in his boot could both be drawn easily and that no blood or grit had found its way into the scabbards during the last fight.

"Center the magic on me," he continued, "Or on Gema here, that way if something does go awry you magic wielders have the option to step outside its effect to sling your spells. I can try to help everyone find concealing shadows on the passage across."

Satisfied that his backup weapons were as ready as they could be, the ranger turned his attention to his pride and joy, his repeating crossbow. He'd had the clip treated with magics similar to those present in his haversack so that instead of the standard five bolts most repeaters held, he could fit up to one hundred bolts into the weapon. Bohen only fired twelve shots during the run in earlier, but, not knowing when he'd next have time to reload, he fished a handful of bolts from his pack and began fitting them into his weapon.

"And splitting up the group is a horrible idea. We don't have any intel on these caves. There could be pitfalls or more ankhegs in other passages we haven't seen yet. Splitting up now is the perfect setup for a divide and conquer victory for our enemies. We stay together and stay alive."

Bohen's former commander had used similar words, but the ranger didn't remember them sounding quite so harsh. his crossbow now full, he readied a bolt and took a step forward. "And with the silence spell, he might be able to break some of these Khords free without attracting the attention on their keepers. Shall we?"

"Would that I could summon Prajna again. Sadly, I only have the ability to call her from her other-worldy home once on any given day, and I'd called and dismissed her just before stepping through the portal to where ever here is."

Chiron rolled onto his side and began pulling himself to his feet, waving Seluumiel away as she tried to tend to him. "I thank you for your efforts, but I've suffered no more than minor cuts and scrapes. This bloody nose is by far the most grave of my injuries." The paladin wiped his nose with his forearm, showing that the blood flow was already slowing. "I just hit the cliff face sooner than I'd have liked. Which is to say: at all. We should both save our healing magics for potentially more dire wounds and use more conventional means for the trivial injuries."

Now standing, Chiron pinched his nostril closed and looked to the ominous cloud in the distance, then to the forest. "Trees or rain-clouds first?"

Yay. That's the one I was hoping for! I gave Pyrrhus some red dragon's blood in character creation, and I wanted to see if I could get one of the other stones to end up going his way. Woot!

Also, I've been working tech on a dance show that opens tomorrow. Once that thing is done with I should be able to get into the right head-space for Pyrrhus and type up a post. If I tried to do it now, he'd just end up talking about there's too much top-light in the bar and not enough front light.

And the amber wash drowns out the colors coming from the gems.

I've been working tech all week on a dance show that's opening tomorrow, after this weekend I'll be able to get light cues out of my head and into Bohen's head-space. As it is, if I tried writing something now, he would probably comment on the way the shadows from the columns interact with the party's movement and then ask for more side-light. Maybe something in dark blue or purple.

Also more back-lighting for the anhkegs... makes them look more menacing.

“The blood of a tiger for the one that puts fear into the hearts of man but is as harmless as a big cat can be. The one that doesn’t fear death when it looks him straight into his deadly eyes.” --orange

“the blood of a bear. For the one that is both wise and has strength.” --brown

“the flame of a phoenix. For the one that is a watcher and protects both his values and his people with his life but seldom says a word.” --The stone dances with an orangish-red flame on it’s glossy surface.

“The blood of a weasel. For the most cunning and slick of them all.” --gray.

“the blood of a great red Dragon for the wisest of them all and the oldest of times.” --dark blood red

I know he didn't get the yellow, orange, brown, or flame gems, but I'm curious about the gray and red and which went to Pyrhhus.

Subject: Chiron (partial backpost)

Everyone was safe, or well on their way to safety. Chiron looked over back and saw the lava quickly closing on the bridge; so much closer than he thought it'd be. Heaving the chest up onto his shoulder he ran for the far side of the bridge with everything he could muster.

Half way.

Again he looked back. This time the bridge disappeared into smoke and flames. The molten rock plummeting over the edge of the cliff down into the canyon below would have been a pretty sight if he weren't observing the fall from a rapidly disintegrating bridge.

Only a few more feet. The bridge shook. The fire ward must have finally been overwhelmed, which meant he had mere seconds before the whole structure would give way. He hurled the chest to the ground near where Xavier stood watching.

Less than ten feet. Chiron wasn't sure if he had the time to finish running across. He'd need to follow the chest and just launch himself the last couple of feet. His legs protested at the exertion, but he knew he could just lay there once he was across. With a minor adjustment to his stride, the paladin threw his arms up and pushed his legs down with all his strength. The bridge wasn't there to push back. The timing of his jump succeeded only in keeping him within sight of the group for a half second longer than the bridge before dropped from sight, a look of surprised confusion on his face.

*****

Tenacity was the first to the cliff's edge, joined quickly by others. On the opposite wall, the lava still poured down into the gorge, but it seemed to the group less threatening now, being separated by such an expanse. Below them then bridge followed the ground a few feet out at an incredibly steep angle before dropping straight down. The bridge was sliding back and forth in an odd sort of way.

A moment later, a gloved hand reached up from below the angle of the cliff wall and grasped the next plank of the bridge-turned-ladder and Chiron pulled himself into view. He was breathing heavily and had a trickle of blood running from one nostril, but otherwise looked none the worse for wear.

"I think," he panted, "we should avoid..." In his current state, climbing and talking appeared to be mutually exclusive. "...Nevermind." So he gave up the latter and concentrated fully on the former, making it up to level ground shortly thereafter. He never did make it to his feet though, preferring to simply collapse onto his back after crawling a foot or two away from the edge.

"That was fun," he said, still trying to catch his breath, "And now that I've done it once, I never ever want to do that again."

He laid there for a moment just staring at the sky, then asked a question in its general direction. "I don't suppose we know where we are, do we?"

((Chatted with Tiamat about this before writing it up. Made some skill checks while we were both in the chat room here.

Subject: Pyrrhus

"Fionn! Get back here!" rasped Pyrrhus in a strained whisper when the rat suddenly dropped to the floor and scurried toward a gnome that had just entered the Thirsty Turtle. "I promised the lady that..." the mage cut himself short when he saw the gem that Fionn had so expertly lifted from the newcomer. It was worth the chance of getting caught, that thing would definitely bring a handful of gold coins. Maybe even platinum if he could find a gullible enough mark. All he had to do was get out before the gnome noticed it was missing.

"Fionn, remind me to get a pet cat..." The gnome had noticed. And he was headed straight for Pyrrhus' table. "A really mean cat."

"I do believe your little friend has taken something of great..." the gnome paused just as he reached the table, giving Pyrrhus an opening.

"Friend? I'm not sure what you mean, I'm new to town myself and haven't, as yet, made any..."

The gnome, not about to let anything distract from his mission, cut Pyrrhus off mid-sentence, "I'm Lokis and I do believe that I have a very important mission for you."

This was not at all how he'd imagined the conversation going. The gnome was supposed to calmly ask for the gem back. Or angrily demand. Possibly scream, "Thief!" and get Muscles involved. Maybe even completely lose his head and lunge at Pyrrhus with a dagger or some-such, but offer him a job? That was so far outside the group of responses he was ready to argue with that Pyrrhus just sat there, mouth open and ready for some quip, but no words came to mind.

After what seemed like an eternity spent sitting there trying to wrap his mind around what this gnome had said and anticipating some kind of trap, Pyrrhus finally managed to find his voice. "As I was saying, I'm not sure what you mean by saying some friend of mine has done something, but the second half of what you said sounded like a job offer." He started out slowly, struggling to get back into form after being so thoroughly derailed, and built back up to his normal fast-talking self.

"And I'm always interested in offers of employment. Please, sit down, have some food, rest your feet, tell me how you think I may be of service to you. Lokis, was it? I'm all ears."

"Come on in the bridge is fine! Horses too, its more than strong enough! HEEEEEEYYY!!! IT'S OKAY TO CROSS!!!" Xavier shouted back across the gorge.

Your idea keeps Chiron from excluding Xavier from the group if gboy turns up again.

I suppose I should keep a better eye on the Comings and Goings threads. I didn't know Tus was gone.

That's really kinda sad; the intro was good story-telling, so the Inn loses another good master mind. Also, I was looking forward to discovering what kind of a person Pyrrhus would turn into.

Topic: Last wish of a Dragon
Subject: Pyrrhus

Pyrrhus retrieved a gold coin from the pouch hanging from his belt and placed it on the table, then took a moment to securely close his coin purse. Using the table to obscure the hand motions associated with casting a spell, the mage twisted in his chair and spoke a cantrip to the wall, away from the other patrons.

The magic now in place, Pyrrhus coughed, as if that had been the reason he'd turned away, and readjusted his seat and waved the barmaid over. As Delra approached he cupped his hand over the coin on the table and began willing the cantrip to do its work.

"Hello and good evening," Pyrrhus said to her when she reached his table, "I would like a plate, or perhaps a bowl, of whatever is creating that wonderful smell back there in the kitchen. At least I think it's emanating from the kitchen. Now that you're here, I could be mistaken. It might simply be your lovely perfume. Is it lavender?"

Delra smiled and laughed slightly. She was used to patrons making advances, but the lines usually had something to do with her physique or what the particular drunkard thought he would be doing later, never on the lavender she rubbed in her hair to combat the smell of sweat and mead on a busy night.

"Uh, no, sir." she said, focusing on the man's food request. "What you smell is the thyme on the pot roast. Would you like some?"

"I would be delighted if you gave me some time. As it is though, I'll take the pot roast. Also, a hunk of cheese for my... ack. Fionn!" As soon as he heard cheese mentioned Fionn climbed out of the collar of Pyrrhus' coat and scurried down his arm to the table, looking at Delra expectantly, as if she could just materialize it there for him.

Delra jumped back at the sudden appearance of a rat in her barroom. "Shoo! You dirty thing!" she cried and was about to snap at the creature with her towel when Pyrrhus leaned forward and covered Fionn with his free arm.

"Woah woah! He's not dirty! And as long as you bring him some cheese he won't even leave this table and he certainly won't go anywhere near your kitchen, I promise." The mage waited for Delra to compose herself before leaning back and addressing his familiar. "Fionn, you know better. You don't come out till I introduce you. You're too good looking to just run about as you please, it gets all the ladies in such a fit. Now back in the coat until she brings you some food."

Fionn looked from Pyrrhus to Delra and back again. Then with what might have been rodent for "sorry", he squeaked once and hopped from the table at his master, catching a hold to the front of his shirt. With as much grace as possible, which is to say none at all, Fionn climbed sideways from his perch into an inside coat pocket.

Pyrrhus just looked down and stared, waiting for Fionn to finish his distracting sideshow. Once the rat was finally settled, he slowly raised his gaze to Delra. "I'm so sorry for that. He forgets his manners sometimes when we've been on the road for awhile. Here, I have something to show you before you leave." he added, and he removed his hand from where it had been cupped on the table.

He had been covering a lump of something. It looked vaguely like a wooden growth, it was dark tan and had a grain to it like the table, but it was partially translucent and reflected light like stained glass. A small loop grew out of the mass and, as Delra watched, one side separated from the table and lifted a small blob of -something- about eight inches off the table. The blob formed itself into teardrop shape and whole thing, base, stem, and blob turned a light green. To Delra it almost looked like a rose bud. As soon as the thought crossed her mind, it began to bloom.

The bud changed to a deep red color when it opened. It had lost the wooden texture it had before, but it still reminded her of stained glass in a way. The rose continued to open but the petals were becoming progressively smaller. The first, and much larger petals had unfurled and completely folded back to merge into the stem while new petals kept appearing from somewhere deep inside the flower.

The color shifted again. This time from the deep rose red to a rich pink. The petals continued to shrink in size, but there were more of them now. No longer a rose, but a peony grew from the bar table, much to Delra's delight. The flower continued to bloom. New petals emerged from the center of the blossom pushing the older ones out and over to merge into the stem. Each new generation of petals was slightly smaller than the last and the color was changing again as well. The undersides of the petals was still pink, but the insides were all a bright yellow. The bar maid was now staring into a chrysanthemum.

The petals continued their perpetual motion for another moment, and then reversed their course. The most recently "bloomed" petals pulled back into the center while about half of the outer petals merged into the stalk. The other half blanched white. A daisy now sprouted from the table; however, instead of collection of golden pistils in the center of the flower, there sat the coin Pyrrhus had set out earlier.

"Go ahead, take it," he said. "Pay for the meal and the rest is yours."

Delra hesitated for a moment before slowly reaching out and plucking the coin from the flower. As soon as she touched it, the whole thing disappeared like so much dust in the wind leaving only the coin behind. "Oh! I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to break it. I'm sorry."

"Nonsense," replied the mage, "It's a flimsy spell nearly everyone learns to toy around with. Nothing it does ever lasts very long. That coin though is very real. Clink it against something, anything. Hit the table with it."

"I, um, okay." With a shrug, Delra tapped the table with the edge of the coin. Three short taps and three concentric circles color, red inside blue inside purple, slowly spread across the table from where she'd hit it with the coin. Startled, she dropped the gold piece and the color vanished on the fourth 'tap'.

"I can't take that, it's too much. Just pay for the roast and I'll bring it out, okay?"

"I'm sorry. Listen, no more magic, alright?" Pyrrhus pleaded before she could get too far away. "Please, take the tip by way of apology for Fionn and myself. He'll stay out of sight and I'll not do any more magics. Unless you want to see more of Fionn. Or the flowers. I'd understand if you picked Fionn over the flowers, that happens a lot. But please take the tip, okay?"

"Okay." She managed a smile, took the coin, and hurried off the the kitchen. With the scholar, the body-guard, and this... whatever he was, tonight was not going to be boring.

Bohen stayed up in front and quiet during the trek from the recent skirmish. He spoke only enough to introduce himself to the new plate-wearing khord that had followed from the museum.

As he scouted ahead he ran through his current company's composition: he was ranged and a sneak; Gemma wore full-plate which probably meant close-quaters fighter and as stealthy as a gorgon in a potter's shop; Rerra wore scale armor, though used her sling at range despite what that type of armor usually meant as far as engagement distance; Ilde had stuck to a bow and had been singing before joining the fight, unsure of stealthiness. And Odin was gone. The one person he knew could be counted on to disappear if the situation called for it apparently had misread the situation.

"Well..." Bohen said in a hushed tone, "We can do this two ways, I suppose. If I was still with Nemesis Company, we'd bottle-neck those creatures here in the hallway and just grind them down to bone-meal, chitin-meal, whatever."

The ranger glanced back into the cavern and tried to do a quick mental assessment of how many would be hitting the tunnel opening at once. Not good numbers based on how quickly he'd seen them move before. And who knew how many more were just out of sight. "Or we can try to sneak through." He offered. "If we get through at all we'll have to be extra careful not to alarm any of them later on or we'll be horribly out flanked."

He wasn't sure how to word his thoughts without offending everyone present. "I'm not yet familiar enough with all of your... specific, eh, skill sets to know which course of action is less likely to kill us all. Granted, some of you might have some magics I'm not aware of. Any suggestions?"
