Topic: Cool curses...
Subject: Rotating Curse

Heard about this nasty 3-part curse somewhere... I think it might actually be in another thread buried here at the inn.

Big huge ugly statue at the far side of an otherwise empty room. Runes carved into stone of the statue. Wizard says it's emanating magic. Rogue confirms that there is definitely some kind of magical trap about this thing. It's the only thing in the room. The party can't not touch it.

The first person to physically touch the statue (probably the mage or the thief) gets bonus +4 STR enhancement.

2nd person to touch the statue gets -4 CON (probably the fighter, after seeing what happened to the last person to touch it)

3rd person to touch the statue (probably the fighter again, trying to undo the con penalty) gets hit with disintegrate and the statue resets to +4 str next.

Nastier version adds +4dex, -4wis, and Insanity after disintegrate before resetting.

PS
I guess this is more of a trap. The curse is on the actual players, "You will kill your characters trying to derive benefit from this statue."

I was going to wait a little longer for my intro, but after you left him downstairs it was too perfect a setup for me. I'm not sure what the guy is going to look like, but until I get a description, I'm imagining Teal'c standing at the bar.

"Muscles" from my post is the Watcher's escort/bodyguard that he left downstairs and and any hulking physique or sour disposition I mention that doesn't match up with the reality of the character is entirely exaggeration on the part of Pyrrhus' imagination.

Topic: Last wish of a Dragon
Subject: Pyrrhus Intro

Pyrrhus stood down the road from the inn, staring at the Thirsty Turtle and wondering if tonight would end as badly as two weeks ago. It really wasn't entirely his fault. Those men, if they cared so much about their coin purses, should really have kept a better eye on them. And, if losing all their coins was going to be such as issue, they shouldn't have been playing three-dragon ante in the first place.

Pyrrhus was a fledgling sorcerer. Or a thief, depending on who was talking. He wasn't as brutish as the common thug that corners you in an alley and just shakes the money out of you. And, unfortunately, he wasn't as subtle as the second-story burglar you find in larger cities that enters and leaves and it's three weeks before you know your grandmother's necklace is gone. No, Pyrrhus' niche was in an uncanny ability to simply talk you out of your money. When that failed he'd use flashy displays of magic to distract you while his pet rat, Fionn, made off with your coins. His marks always knew they'd been had but Pyrrus usually talked them out of a fight with some quick words and some faster magic as easily as he talked them out of their coins.

Last week his marks weren't so easily conned a second time. So here he was, a new town, a new tavern, and, hopefully, a new take. He tied his red-brown hair back into a small ponytail and marched for the door. "Here we go, Fionn. Let's see if we can't avoid having to pay for our own room tonight, eh?" Pyrrhus grinned as he reached inside his cloak and patted his familiar's white fur.

Opening the door to the tavern, Pyrrhus' grin faded immediately. Standing by the bar, arms crossed and seeming (to Pyrrhus) to be scowling at the other patrons, was the most well-armed and muscled bouncer the sorcerer had ever seen a barkeep employ. The mage just stood in the doorway for what seemed like an eternity as he watched his imagined fortunes flee to the safety of this guard's shadow.

"So much for any profit here." he whispered mournfully to Fionn as he finally left the entryway. Sulking over to an empty table as far from Muscles as was possible, Pyrrhus flopped down, utterly defeated. His jaw hurt just thinking about what could happen if he tried any of his tricks with that guy standing there.

Fionn climbed up from the inside pocket where he'd been hiding to Pyrrhus' shoulder and poked his head out of the coat's collar, squeaking quietly to his master. "I know." Came the reply. "No money, but you're right. They don't know me here and it'll be warm. Oh, and dry!"

"Thank you," Pyrrhus said, feeling slightly better about the situation. "You know what? I'll even get you some cheese if they've got it."

WEll if it's 100yds across, there's no way one length of rope is going to make it.

"We need to get across that bridge!" Chiron shouted as he angled toward the crossing. "Seluumiel, Camille, dismount and head across as soon as Xavier says it's safe. I'll take the chest across."

The paladin wasn't sure if the bridge would hold the weight of the charger, but he pushed those negative thoughts to the back of his mind. Once he reached the bridge though, he pulled the length of coiled rope out of his pack just in case. As he reached the edge of the cliff, he realized the rope wasn't going to be of much use. The gap was simply far too wide for a single rope to reach across, in fact he'd need more than five times as much rope as what he had with him to span the chasm.

"Xavier, I need you to make sure this bridge is safe. You seem to be the lightest of your feet and most likely to notice and avoid any rotted planks. Please hurry. And be careful!"

The world exploded. The mountain shook violently as it expelled ash and smoke into the sky and sent molten rock pouring down at the newly arrived group.

"Oh... Gods..." Chiron stood for just a moment, mouth agape, as he stared up the mountainside at the wanton destruction playing out before him. A call from Tenacity pulled him from his trance.

"Chiron, give them the box and I'll set her off!" instructed the knight as she helped Camille onto the horse's back.

"Right." The paladin shook his head to clear his mind and dashed over to the two riders, hoisting the box up to them. "Each use a hand to steady the box and one to hold on yourselves. Do not let yourselves fall! We might need the contents but I'd rather lose it than either of you." Once it looked like they had a hold of the chest he helped Tenacity in setting the horse to running, then followed it down the mountain with all haste.

Subject: Bohen

His aim had become a bit more respectable as the fight wore on, but Bohen still mentally kicked himself for not felling the first charging monster in the opening volley. "You're slipping old man," he told himself, mimicking the line he'd used many times on his human commander back when he'd been a surface dwelling mercenary. The captain of his unit was about a third of Bohen's age but, because of differing racial life expectancies, had lived a greater portion "his time" as he'd called it.

When the first monster failed to drop, Bohen had flung himself into the melee, nearly getting himself killed. He probably would have died if it hadn't been for Foxblade. "Damned crazy kid" would have been his commander's admonition after saving the ranger's hide for the umpteenth time.

"Thank you, Rerra. I'll try not to require as much of your aid after the next battle." Bohen said, half grinning, as he pulled himself up the wall. He wasn't sure why divine healing always made him replay the fight that had caused the need for the curative magic. Probably something to do with learning from your mistakes or some other pulpit cliché. He was thankful for the assistance, but he wished that once in a while his mind would skip the introspection.

"Hello, fellow warriors." said the new-comer, after a terse conversation with the two museum guards. "I’m Ilde. I heard the monster have some captives. Shall we all go get them or go back? If we go back we can get supplies and back up. If we leave now we have a better chance of bringing them back alive."

"Your company is welcome, Ilde, as we go after the captives, of course. I'm not sure how long those that were taken have to live once these creatures get them back to their lair. Also, these tunnels are not dwarven. If we give them too much time, they might collapse some of the passages to prevent pursuit. Once everyone is able to continue, we should do so."

As the last worlds came out of his mouth, it occurred to Bohen that he didn't actually know how everyone's individual fights had gone. His vision had tunneled at the end. He knew Rerra was okay, she had been the one to pick him up but...

"Odin? Are you alright? It looked like it had a good hold on you there for a second." Then, looking to the two guards he asked, "What about you two? Not dead yet I hope." Bohen grinned, knowing he was playing right into the argument that had just been building about their injuries.

I know how crazy life can get and how long sometimes it can take for things to settle down. Zombie Jesus was really pissed off in my corner of the world, nothing has gone right for anyone since April started. I'm sure other people are having not-great times as well and and I'm ready to wait however long it takes for the game to get back on its feet.

I just wanted a teaser trailer kind of thing. The movie isn't coming out till sometime next summer, but I'm going to show you this handful of 1.5 second clips to make sure you remember that this movie is going to happen.... sometime. Same thing. This game is going to happen.... eventually.

Take your time. My RL issues probably wouldn't let me play if you started it back right now anyway, so I'm okay waiting. Just wanted to let you know I'm still interested in gaming with you.... someday.

The ranger hit the ground hard when the ankheg holding him collapsed. Everything between his feet and his head hurt, and the sharp ping in his side when he so much as thought about moving probably meant he'd dislocated or even broken a rib. End one final nuisance, he also had a catch in his throat.

Grimacing against the pain, Bohen forced himself to cough once. That one cough turned itself into a short series of wet-sounding hacks. That catch was gone, but now he had a familiar metallic taste in his mouth.

Propping himself up against the wall, Bohen once again leveled his crossbow at the nearest ankheg while Rerra assaulted it with her warhammer. The ranger wasn't sure how much longer he could remain conscious, but as long as he could move and keep his eyes open, he was going to distract those monsters as best he could so Rerra could open their skulls faster.

((Full attack. Once Rerra's target is hit, fire at any other ankheg's in LoS to grant as many flanking opportunities as possible.))

The guardian fades away after his final instructions, "In you must go! Take the contents of my chest. It will be useful in the destruction of evil. One thing you must do, you must destroy any portals you find in the next world." The rest of the house, tied to the Guardian, begins to fade as well.

Tenacity takes the first steps through the portal, followed faithfully by Diligence. Seluumiel was next, turning to step through the portal, pausing only to throw a final glance behind her, "I trust one of you men will carry the chest through."

"Yeah," Chiron responded to... nothing, as the moon elf had already passed through the portal and vanished. "Maybe the old elf bothered to leave instructions in here on just how we're supposed to destroy the portals on the other side." The paladin complained as he hoisted the chest and lumbered toward the fading portal. "We should really be moving now, Xavier. Maybe you can find some fruit on the other side. Don't forget to bring your sister, it would be a shame if she were to be trapped in this room for eternity."

Even as the words left his lips, Chiron knew he was being too harsh. The siblings were eccentric, no doubt, but they hadn't done anything to deserve being the target of the paladin's frustrations. "Forgive me. There is much about this whole situation I do not like and I shouldn't take it out on you. But we really should be going now."

With that, Chiron stepped through the portal to meet his destiny.

"Xavier," Chiron said without looking away from the Guardian, "If you're so hungry why not rummage through that pack of yours and find something to chew on?"

A moment later her heard Camille behind him asking if that was blood on someone's chin. The image of Xavier biting through his own lip out of hunger flashed across the paladin's mind and dropped his head into his hand, rubbing his eyes.

When Chiron looked back up, the old elf appeared quite haggard, the mere act of carrying on a lengthy conversation seemed to drain him thoroughly. The paladin feared how quickly the elf might fade if he were to carry on a conversation with the flighty Xavier.

"Sir, if you have never explored your surroundings here, what do you know of the other side of the portal you have been tasked with defending? You say it is a way out. A way out to where?"

This was going to be a long fight; Bohen hated long fights. There was always something that went wrong whenever he failed to drop his targets in the first few seconds and this time things didn't exactly start out favoring the ranger and his companions. Of Bohen's three shots, only one found a hole in the monster's chitinous armor, and the normally devastating bolt didn't even seem to bother the creature.

Bohen hopped forward, angling for the wall behind the monster that had charged at Odin and spinning so that he'd be less likely to be caught by an opportunistic claw swipe. It looked like the thing had gotten a pretty good hold on Odin and Bohen wasn't about to just let it pull the fighter away from the group.

"Rerra! Focus fire, let's get this one off of Odin! We can't let them separate us" the ranger called out as he tried to find a safe opening to take a shot. He was concentrating more on dodging incoming blows than aiming his crossbow, so he wasn't expecting three solid hits right away. He knew this fight was going to drag on for awhile.

((OOC: 5' step to behind Odin's attacker. Fighting defensively. Full attacks against the one now flanked.))

The door Seluumiel opened revealed not the orcs and ogres Chiron was expecting, but a solitary aged elf. The priestess spoke with him at first in elven, then the common tongue, as he explained who he was and why he was in this forsaken house.

The paladin remained in the main room while two spoke, moving into the doorway as Tenacity stepped into the smaller room to join the conversation.

The Guardian suddenly looked panicked and asked about the other doors.

"We do not know for sure what lies beyond the other doors. A former associate claimed that one of the doors led to a room with a black dragon. That claim has yet to be verified. We have detected what we assume to be teleportation magics at work jumbling whatever lies beyond the other doors.

"Have you never left this room to explore the rest of house?"
