Subject: The Shadow Knows!

"How obvious do you want this abduction to be?"

A deep voice echoed out from one of the shadowed corners of the room. There was quality to the voice that was difficult to place, not gravelly, but not really clear either. It almost sounded like the speaker was on the other side of a ventilation shaft. The lights in the chandelier flared up for one distracting second and in that moment a sixth man stepped up to the side of the table. He was tall, standing at six and a half feet, and was incredibly gaunt. He wore black, fitted robes, that matched the color of his skin and his short, spiked hair was even darker than his clothes. Pale blue eyes looked from Banyan, to the two guests, and back to the host of this clandestine meeting.

"By selecting these two," the newcomer continued, "it would appear that you want a very high profile massacre. Now I'm not saying that shock troops don't have their uses, but you know that I've never had a taste for direct confrontation, so why include me in this endeavor? Unless you'd like some... disinformation... to accompany the assault. If the purpose of the attack is to take his children away, Korbin will immediately try to get them back. But what if his children are still with him after the attack?"

Banyan turned to the black man, an incredulous look on his face, "I'm paying you to take his children away..."

"Hear me out," the newest arrival interrupted. "Your brother won't be as quick to organize a manhunt if he thinks his children were killed in the battle. First he'll grieve. Then he'll look for revenge. And the time that he spends mourning the loss of his children, we can spend ensuring that he has no chance of ever finding them.

"It shouldn't prove difficult to find some gutter-waifs of about the same size and age of his children. We kill them, remove their heads, or partially burn them to make the identification difficult, and plant the bodies as part of the kidnapping. Throw a few flasks of alchemist's fire around during the assault and the switch won't even be noticed."

After presenting his idea he turned to the orc-blood, and the leather-masked man, "What do you think? Feel like playing the part of distractions?"

Subject: Talus

Talus finished scratching the last few notes into the logbook: Exit to surface; 40 x 40' room; two hallways and one door; desk. He found himself wanting to look more at the map than the actual location. This room didn't feel right. Hopefully the entire crawl through this mine wasn't as creepy as the main hub. What was all that scratching and squeaking; rats maybe?

::No danger see I. Trap? Ambush? Stay behind until clear or danger appears::

Aelistae signed to the warlock using the drow system of hand signals and body language she had taught him. He was still far from being able to carry on full conversations, but he had progressed enough to follow what she wanted of him. This room was rife with possibilities for ambush. The desk most likely had some trap rigged to it, but that would be a passive thing, only going off when we got to it. That overturned mining cart, on the other hand, probably sheltered a waiting kobold or similar threat that would "go off" on its own.

::Will wait. Be careful::

Talus dropped the inkpen into the crease between pages and signed back to the priestess, then, closing the adventure log, Talus refreshed his defenses. He called upon his innate magical powers, forcing them to the surface and then out past the confines of his body to recreate the protective barrier he had conjured just before entering the mine. He was finding his abilities easier to access; the powers were staying close to the skin, not buried deep like they had been a month ago. He could do the simple hand motions to focus his powers now without the need to close his eyes and concentrate. It was comfortable now.

The warlock looked back to Dylan and signed the plan over to the bard. It wasn't until Talus saw the look of confusion on the other man's face that he realized Dylan didn't understand the hand-code. With a sheepish shrug, Talus waved for Dylan to come wait with him while Aelistae and Linnix searched the room.

Subject: Chiron

As Chiron slowly pulled the door open the woman burst through and into the room and he could tell as she passed by that she had a child cradled in her arms. Whether it still lived he couldn't tell with so brief a glimpse, but the youth was no longer the paladin's main focus, for as his eyes adjusted from the glare of the archway he realized that he was looking at a dark elf.

She had called out, "To arms! Something wicked this way comes!", though why she would announce the presence of her drow compatriots he didn't know, and didn't have much time to consider, because it seemed that the woman was making a break for outside of the house. "Guard the door and ask me no questions! A dragon, its soul as black as its skin lurks beyond!"

Chiron slammed the door shut behind him with his left arm, hoping the weight of his shield would push back and daze any more dark elves about to rush through after the child abductor, and spun to deal with the kidnapper. He doubted the existence of a dragon in the house, thinking this, along with the hint of more drow, to be distractions to allow the dangerous elf to slip away with the child.

The thuds of shield against door and door against frame obscured most of what Xavier said, but he stood ready with throwing stars in hand. In the moment he'd spent closing the door, both Satya and Seluumiel seemed to have tackled the drow, slowing her escape. Satya had wrestled the child away from the drow and was headed to the door, leaving Seluumiel in a poor place to maintain the grapple they appeared to have had the dark elf in. This was no place for a fight. This house undoubtedly had many more tricks left to play and if either of the drow's claims had any truth to them, the main room would be a very unfriendly place in moments.

Chiron pushed off the door to get as much momentum as possible and charged at the dark elf's back. Holding his shield out in front and bracing for the impact, he repeated to himself, "Keep your legs moving. Don't stop till you're through the table and outside. Keep your legs moving." If everything went smoothly he would hit the drow square in the back, pulling her free of Seluumiel, carrying her to the door and smashing through the table wedged there to end sprawled on the grass outside.

((Bull rush at the dark elf, wanting the max push-back allowed by my STR roll to get us well outside the house.))

As the door began to open, Chiron picked his shield up from where he'd propped it against the wall while he worked on the doors. He hoped that Lacey had found some way to access the displacing powers of the archways and was returning to them.

"Lacey?" he asked of the silhouette.

An acidic substance splashed onto the door in response.

That's not Lacey. The paladin's sword was instantly in his hand as he crept closer to the door, leading the way with his shield. The light in the next room kept him getting a good look at the woman, if it even was a woman, since she was standing directly in front of what was probably another shining archway.

"I'm going to open the door the rest of the way," Chiron warned the others, as he hooked his sword around the edge of the door and pulled it open.

During the hour it takes Seluumiel to cast Identify, Chiron is going to examine the hinges of the two propped-open doors. Unless something prevents him, by the time she's done casting he will have pulled both doors from their mounting and stacked them in the corner.

I'd like to see them try to swing shut after that.

"Wait," Seluumiel began, "While Lacey has decided to throw her life away and walk blindly on her own, the rest of us must stay together.

"Let me see what can be gleaned from this book and map before we investigate this house any further."

The paladin's shoulders sagged. He knew the elf was right, but he hated the feeling of helplessness that accompanied inaction. He wasn't a scholar and would likely be more a distraction, poking his head over Seluumiel's shoulder while she studied the book, than provide any real aid. Maybe if he could discern the source of the evil he had sensed earlier, he could help the group's cause and give him something to do.

Chiron set himself in the center of the main room, in place where he could see the two remaining closed doors and be able to look through the open door to Lacey's Arch. He closed his eyes, took several deep breaths and supplicated Ilamter for the power to find evil, where ever it may try to hide.

He opened his eyes and looked to the table that had been wedged into the doorway to keep the path to Lacey open. He let his gaze slide beyond it to the archway, fearing that he may be overwhelmed by the power of the malice and hate he expected to encounter.

"the man certainly enjoyed taking the lead"

He's nervous. No one asserted themselves as the leader before we got to the house and he feels that the lack of a defined leader is what allowed Lacey to walk off. He's just making sure that doesn't happen again.

Lawful alignments are funny.

Talus can take map duty. He only needs one hand free for his invocations, so he wouldn't even need to drop the book if a fight breaks out.

Chiron stares, mouth agape, at the archway Lacey had so boldly walked through. How could anyone move forward into danger so blindly?

"I have no idea what that woman was thinking. This house is very obviously a trap and she just keeps walking without...." he stops himself, taking a slow, deep, breath to prevent getting too worked up. "She confounds me."

Xavier points to the arch which Lacey disappeared through, "You know, I say we head through it. But, just in case it's a warp of some description, we should link arms, hold hands..."

Chiron shakes his head as Xavier finished his suggestion. "We can't follow. Not yet, not before we examine the information we've been given. Lacey made it very clear before we left that the only thing that held any importance for her was finding the child. She's just demonstrated that her own life, and the safety of anyone near her is in a very distant second place."

A grim look on his face, the paladin turns to Seluumiel, "Can you decipher the items Satya found on the desk? Xavier, if you have any talents dealing with magical or ancient texts, could you lend her a hand? I don't think any one of us should be left alone while we're in here. While I do believe Lacey stepped into that portal on her own, we can't rule out the possibility that something forced her through.

"Satya, can you help me with these other two doors? I'm not sure what I'm more curious about: the contents of the rooms, or what the house will do if all four doors are open at the same time. If there are more of these glowing arches, I recommend not looking directly into them."

Chiron moved back into the main room. The image of a simple hornet trap kept passing through his mind. Set a small piece of meat in a jar and replace the lid with a funnel, pointing down to the bait. The wasps will crawl down through the tapered opening, chasing the smell of the meat. After eating their fill, they try to leave but can't fly out through the opening they walked in.

He hoped that Seluumiel would find something useful in the book. He doubted that the other rooms held anything of note, but he couldn't just stand around waiting while Lacey moved deeper into who knows how much more danger.

My most recent post (the one about the table) assumes the following:

1) the table functions similarly to a simple wooden door with a break DC of 13 or less so that Taking 10

2) the table, after being broken (approximately) in half, is of a size that will fit into the two doorways

3) everyone else follows along

If one (or all) of these assumptions is incorrect, please let me know and I'll change my post.

"I agree with you," said Chiron, shaking his head in disbelief at Lacey's actions. "The door leading out cannot close, and neither can the door we now have to chase Lacey through. We should all be very cautious. Before Lacey charged ahead, I detected great evil in this place, and it was hiding somewhere beyond those doors. The intensity of it was nearly overwhelming, and I couldn't pin down a more exact location than that."

As he spoke, Chiron moved up to the table Seluumiel was clearing. "Satya, Seluumiel, can you keep the door from closing behind Lacey? Xavier, can you hold the exit for a moment? We need to get these doors propped open before we can go any further." Once the elf had everything of interest packed away, he flipped the table up on its side and slid it over so that all four legs were braced against the nearest wall. Taking a step back, the paladin replaced his sword in its sheath and steadied himself before lunging forward and snapping his foot out at the center of the table. There was a loud crack and the table bowed slightly, but didn't break. One more swift kick and the table folds almost in half, sending a small spray of splinters into the air.

"Seluumiel, can you two wedge this into the doorway over there? Xavier and I will do the same to the front door and then we can get on with rescuing Lacey from her own enthusiasm." With that,Chiron slides one half of the table toward Satya and Seluumiel and drags the other piece to the front door and begins maneuvering the chunk of wood into a position that should prevent the door from closing.

Moments later, Chiron stands at the door Lacey had passed through, fairly certain that the front door wasn't going to close easily. Taking a deep breath, the paladin climbs over the table and into the next room.

Ava, I have a question about this Detect Snares and Traps that Lacey is using.

It sounds fairly useful and I was wondering what book it's in so I could see about using it with some of my other characters.

At first I thought it was Detect Snares and Pits that you were utilizing, but after checking that one out I found it was for Druids and Rangers only. I'm always on the lookout for new spells, what book should I flip through to find that one?

Chiron stepped back out of the doorway and onto the porch to let the others pass through.

"I see no other recourse but to move forward. Let us join the men."

Lacey stifles a laugh with, "You don't," but proceeds into the house.

Once everyone else was inside, Chiron took up position in the doorway, standing perpendicular to the frame. He remembered how forcefully the door had flown open and he braced himself to try to stop the thing in case it decided to swing shut with the same sort of force.

"You say the door disappeared after it closed? Do you mean it became part of the wall, or something else?"

"And I can go in second, I suppose." Talus chimed in. "I can augment my vision to be almost as good in the dark as yours, Aelistae. Plus I can protect myself from any missiles a hiding goblin launches at me."

Talus closed his eyes for a moment. After a moment's pause, a barrier of chaotically swirling energy sprang up around the warlock as he opens his eyes again. The display started with what looked like a series of his eldritch blasts flying out of the ground near his feet, arcing up to circle above his head before winding back down to the ground again. The points of energy change colors as they float through the air, deep purple morphing into red or blue, sometimes yellow, and the motes never seem to follow the same path as they orbit the warlock. Also, no two of the streaks of energy seem to travel at the same speed, so after a few seconds individual points mesh together and encapsulate Talus in a transparent shield.

"Okay. I'm ready whenever you are." he says, once his protections are in place. "Heh. These things are going to wish they'd run farther away after the battle at the outpost." The warlock readies his dagger as he finished speaking, but comparing the small blade to his better armed and armored companions pushes his words more to comedy than to intimidation.
